Abstract

We report on laser spectroscopic measurements on Li$^+$ ions in the experimental storage ring ESR at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. Driving the $2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{3}{2}) \,\leftrightarrow\,2p\,^3\!P_2\;(F=\frac{5}{2}) \leftrightarrow 2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{5}{2})$ $\Lambda$-transition in $^7$Li$^+$ with two superimposed laser beams it was found that the use of circularly polarized light leads to a disappearance of the resonance structure in the fluorescence signal. This can be explained by optical pumping into a dark state of polarized ions. We present a detailed theoretical analysis of this process that supports the interpretation of optical pumping and demonstrates that the polarization induced by the laser light must then be at least partially maintained during the round trip of the ions in the storage ring. Abstract

Context. Teegarden's Star is the brightest and one of the nearest ultra-cool dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. For its late spectral type (M7.0V), the star shows relatively little activity and is a prime target for near-infrared radial velocity surveys such as CARMENES. Aims. As part of the CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs, we obtained more than 200 radial-velocity measurements of Teegarden's Star and analysed them for planetary signals. Methods. We find periodic variability in the radial velocities of Teegarden's Star. We also studied photometric measurements to rule out stellar brightness variations mimicking planetary signals. Results. We find evidence for two planet candidates, each with $1.1M_\oplus$ minimum mass, orbiting at periods of 4.91 and 11.4 d, respectively. No evidence for planetary transits could be found in archival and follow-up photometry. Small photometric variability is suggestive of slow rotation and old age. Conclusions. The two planets are among the lowest-mass planets discovered so far, and they are the first Earth-mass planets around an ultra-cool dwarf for which the masses have been determined using radial velocities., Comment: A&A 627, A49. 26 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables. Abstract

Lab::Measurement is a framework for test and measurement automatization using Perl 5. While primarily developed with applications in mesoscopic physics in mind, it is widely adaptable. Internally, a layer model is implemented. Communication protocols such as IEEE 488, USB Test & Measurement, or, e.g., VXI-11 are addressed by the connection layer. The wide range of supported connection backends enables unique cross-platform portability. At the instrument layer, objects correspond to equipment connected to the measurement PC (e.g., voltage sources, magnet power supplies, multimeters, etc.). The high-level sweep layer automates the creation of measurement loops, with simultaneous plotting and data logging. An extensive unit testing framework is used to verify functionality even without connected equipment. Abstract

Context: The main goal of the CARMENES survey is to find Earth-mass planets around nearby M-dwarf stars. Seven M-dwarfs included in the CARMENES sample had been observed before with HIRES and HARPS and either were reported to have one short period planetary companion (GJ15A, GJ176, GJ436, GJ536 and GJ1148) or are multiple planetary systems (GJ581 and GJ876). Aims: We aim to report new precise optical radial velocity measurements for these planet hosts and test the overall capabilities of CARMENES. Methods: We combined our CARMENES precise Doppler measurements with those available from HIRES and HARPS and derived new orbital parameters for the systems. Bona-fide single planet systems are fitted with a Keplerian model. The multiple planet systems were analyzed using a self-consistent dynamical model and their best fit orbits were tested for long-term stability. Results: We confirm or provide supportive arguments for planets around all the investigated stars except for GJ15A, for which we find that the post-discovery HIRES data and our CARMENES data do not show a signal at 11.4 days. Although we cannot confirm the super-Earth planet GJ15Ab, we show evidence for a possible long-period ($P_{\rm c}$ = 7025$_{-629}^{+972}$ d) Saturn-mass ($m_{\rm c} \sin i$ = 51.8$_{-5.8}^{+5.5}M_\oplus$) planet around GJ15A. In addition, based on our CARMENES and HIRES data we discover a second planet around GJ1148, for which we estimate a period $P_{\rm c}$ = 532.6$_{-2.5}^{+4.1}$ d, eccentricity $e_{\rm c}$ = 0.34$_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$ and minimum mass $m_{\rm c} \sin i$ = 68.1$_{-2.2}^{+4.9}M_\oplus$. Conclusions: The CARMENES optical radial velocities have similar precision and overall scatter when compared to the Doppler measurements conducted with HARPS and HIRES. We conclude that CARMENES is an instrument that is up to the challenge of discovering rocky planets around low-mass stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 24 pages, 16 figures, 14 tables

Abstract

We report on experimental studies of divergence of proton beams from nanometer thick diamond-like carbon (DLC) foils irradiated by an intense laser with high contrast. Proton beams with extremely small divergence (half angle) of 2 degree are observed in addition with a remarkably well-collimated feature over the whole energy range, showing one order of magnitude reduction of the divergence angle in comparison to the results from micrometer thick targets. We demonstrate that this reduction arises from a steep longitudinal electron density gradient and an exponentially decaying transverse profile at the rear side of the ultrathin foils. Agreements are found both in an analytical model and in particle-in-cell simulations. Those novel features make nm foils an attractive alternative for high flux experiments relevant for fundamental research in nuclear and warm dense matter physics., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In an article "Missing Transverse-Doppler Effect in Time-Dilation Experiments with High-Speed Ions" by S. Devasia [arXiv:1003.2970v1], our recent Doppler shift experiments on fast ion beams are reanalyzed. Contrary to our analysis, Devasia concludes that our results provide an "indication of Lorentz violation". We argue that this conclusion is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of our experimental scheme and reiterate that our results are in excellent agreement with Special Relativity.

Abstract

We investigate the influence of phenomenological three-nucleon interactions on the systematics of ground-state energies and charge radii throughout the whole nuclear mass range from 4-He to 208-Pb. The three-nucleon interactions supplement unitarily transformed two-body interactions constructed within the Unitary Correlation Operator Method or the Similarity Renormalization Group approach. To be able to address heavy nuclei as well, we treat the many-body problem in Hartree-Fock plus many-body perturbation theory, which is sufficient to assess the systematics of energies and radii, and limit ourselves to regularized three-body contact interactions. We show that even with such a simplistic three-nucleon interaction a simultaneous reproduction of the experimental ground-state energies and charge radii can be achieved, which is not possible with unitarily transformed two-body interactions alone., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The dissociative recombination of the lowest rotational states of H3+ has been investigated at the storage ring TSR using a cryogenic 22-pole radiofrequency ion trap as injector. The H3+ was cooled with buffer gas at ~15 K to the lowest rotational levels, (J,G)=(1,0) and (1,1), which belong to the ortho and para proton-spin symmetry, respectively. The rate coefficients and dissociation dynamics of H3+(J,G) populations produced with normal- and para-H2 were measured and compared to the rate and dynamics of a hot H3+ beam from a Penning source. The production of cold H3+ rotational populations was separately studied by rovibrational laser spectroscopy using chemical probing with argon around 55 K. First results indicate a ~20% relative increase of the para contribution when using para-H2 as parent gas. The H3+ rate coefficient observed for the para-H2 source gas, however, is quite similar to the H3+ rate for the normal-H2 source gas. The recombination dynamics confirm that for both source gases, only small populations of rotationally excited levels are present. The distribution of 3-body fragmentation geometries displays a broad part of various triangular shapes with an enhancement of ~12% for events with symmetric near-linear configurations. 18. Unitary Correlation Operator Method and Similarity Renormalization Group: Connections and Differences

Abstract

We discuss relations and differences between two methods for the construction of unitarily transformed effective interactions, the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) and Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM). The aim of both methods is to construct a soft phase-shift equivalent effective interaction which is well suited for many-body calculations in limited model spaces. After contrasting the two conceptual frameworks, we establish a formal connection between the initial SRG-generator and the static generators of the UCOM transformation. Furthermore we propose a mapping procedure to extract UCOM correlation functions from the SRG evolution. We compare the effective interactions resulting from the UCOM-transformation and the SRG-evolution on the level of matrix elements, in no-core shell model calculations of light nuclei, and in Hartree-Fock calculations up to 208-Pb. Both interactions exhibit very similar convergence properties in light nuclei but show a different systematic behavior as function of particle number., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures; v2: minor changes following referees' comments

Abstract

Heterozygous TREX1 mutations are associated with monogenic familial chilblain lupus and represent a risk factor for developing systemic lupus erythematosus. These interferonopathies originate from chronic type I interferon stimulation due to sensing of inadequately accumulating nucleic acids. We here analysed the composition of dendritic cell (DC) subsets, central stimulators of immune responses, in patients with TREX1 deficiency. We performed single-cell RNA-sequencing of peripheral blood DCs and monocytes from two patients with familial chilblain lupus and heterozygous mutations in TREX1 and from controls. Type I interferon pathway genes were strongly upregulated in patients. Cell frequencies of the myeloid and plasmacytoid DC and of monocyte populations in patients and controls were similar, but we describe a novel DC subpopulation highly enriched in patients: a myeloid DC CD1C+ subpopulation characterized by the expression of LMNA, EMP1 and a type I interferon- stimulated gene profile. The presence of this defined subpopulation was confirmed in a second cohort of patients and controls by flow cytometry, also revealing that an increased percentage of patient’s cells in the subcluster express costimulatory molecules. We identified a novel type I interferon responsive myeloid DC subpopulation, that might be important for the perpetuation of TREX1-induced chilblain lupus and other type I interferonopathies.

Abstract

We present preparatory measurements for an improved test of time dilation at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI in Darmstadt. A unique combination of particle accelerator experiments and laser spectroscopy is used to perform this test with the highest precision. [sup.7][Li.sup.+] ions are accelerated to 34% of the speed of light at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung and stored in the experimental storage ring. The forward and backward Doppler shifts of an electric dipole transition of these ions are measured with laser spectroscopy techniques. From these Doppler shifts, both the ion velocity β = v/c and the time dilation factor γ = [γ.sub.SR](1 + [??][β.sup.2]) can be derived for testing Special Relativity. Two laser systems have been developed to drive the ³[S.sub.1] → ³[P.sub.2] transition in [sup.7][Li.sup.+]. Moreover, a detector system composed of photomultipliers, both to monitor the exact laser ion beam overlap as well as to optimize fluorescence detection, has been set up and tested. We investigate optical-optical double-resonance spectroscopy on a closed L-type three-level system to overcome Doppler broadening. A residual, broadened fluorescence background caused by velocity-changing processes in the ion beam is identified, and a background subtraction scheme implemented. At the present stage the experimental sensitivity, although already comparable with previous measurements on slower ion beams at the TSR storage ring that led to [absolute value of [??]] < 8.4 x [10.sup.-8], suffer from a poor signal-to-noise ratio. Modifications of the ion source as well as the detection system are discussed that promise to improve the sensitivity by one order of magnitude. Nous utilisons une combinaison unique d'acceeleerateur de particules et de spectroscopie laser pour completer ce test avec la plus haute precision. Des ions [sup.7][Li.sup.+] sont acceteres jusqu'a 34 % de la vitesse de la lumiere au GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung et conserves dans son anneau de stockage (ESR). Nous mesurons par spectroscopie laser l'effet Doppler avant et arriere d'une transition dipolaire electrique dans ces ions. A partir de ces deplacements Doppler, nous pouvons obtenir la vitesse des ions β = v/c et le facteur de dilatation du temps γ = [γ.sup.SR](1 + [??][β.sup.2]) pour tester la relativite restreinte. Deux systemes lasers ont ete developpes pour exciter la transition ³[S.sub.1] → ³[P.sub.2] dans le [sup.7][Li.sup.+]. De plus, nous avons developpe et teste un systeme de detection compose de photomultiplicateurs pour mesurer a la fois le chevauchement exact du faisceau d'ions et pour detecter la fluorescence optimiseee. Nous analysons la spectroscopie a double resonance optique-optique sur un systeme ferme a trois niveaux de type Λ afin de contrebalancer l'elargissement Doppler. Nous identifions un fond elargi residuel de fluorescence, cause par le changement de vitesse du faisceau d'ions et nous avons applique une procedure de soustraction du fond pour le contrecarrer. A cette etape-ci, notre precision experimentale souffre d'un mauvais rapport signal sur bruit, mieme si elle est comparable a une mesure deja effectueee avec des faisceaux d'ions plus lents a l'anneau de stockage TSR qui a donne une valeur [absolute value of [??]] < 8.4 x [10.sup.-8]. Abstract

We report on first measurements towards an Ives-Stilwell test of time dilation at velocities around 0.3c. In Ives-Stilwell type experiments, fast atomic ions containing a well-known transition are used as moving clocks, and time dilation as well as the velocity can be derived from the simultaneous laser-spectroscopic measurements of the Doppler shifts with and against the direction of motion. To accurately measure these Doppler shifts, the Doppler broadening caused by the ions velocity distribution needs to be overcome. We performed first feasibility studies for laser spectroscopy on [sup.7][Li.sup.+] ions in the [2S.sup.3][S2.sub.1] metastable ground state at the Gesellschaft fiir Schwerinonenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt. The ions were stored in the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at a velocity of 0.338c, and optical-optical double-resonance spectroscopy on a closed A-type three level system was performed with two lasers propagating antiparallel to the ions motion. We found that Doppler shift measurements on a narrow subclass of the ions velocity distribution with sufficient signal-to-noise ratio are possible if the ion beam is electron-cooled and bunched. Together with the control of systematic error sources developed in our previous experiments on slower beams, the ESR experiment promises an improvement of previously achieved sensitivities to time dilation by about an order of magnitude.
