Risk stratification was performed according to WHO-defined BMI groups. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality at 30 months (median follow-up). Kaplan-Meier, uni- and multivariable Cox proportional regression analyses were applied for statistics.Results: 1832 consecutive patients with HFmrEF were included with a median BMI of 26.7 kg/m2 (IQR 24.0– 30.8 kg/m2). Patients with lowest BMI (ie, 18.5– 24.9 kg/m2) were associated with highest risk of all-cause mortality at 30 months compared to patients with higher BMI values (40.0% vs 29.0% vs 21.4% vs 20.9%; log rank p = 0.001; HR = 0.721; 95% CI 0.656– 0.793; p = 0.001). Even after multivariable adjustment, higher BMI values were associated with improved survival at 30 months (HR = 0.963; 95% CI 0.943– 0.985; p = 0.001). In contrast, the risk of HF- related rehospitalization at 30 months was not affected by BMI (log rank p = 0.064).Conclusion: In patients hospitalized with HFmrEF, lower BMI was associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality at 30 months, suggesting an obesity paradox in HFmrEF.Keywords: heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction, HFmrEF, body mass index, BMI, obesity, mortality

Abstract

The radial strength of balloon expandable stents represents a key property for a successful recanalization of sclerotic blood vessels. This study focuses on the most commonly used method for investigation of radial strength and radial stiffness via segmented head test setup. A custom made user software was used for evaluation of the radial force curves considering requirements of international standards such as ASTM F3067. Contributing factors during measurement such as friction and test setup deformation as well as the single cycle and multi cycle approach were addressed and discussed.

Dizziness is a common symptom in medicine. The anamnesis and detection of a nystagmus is essential to distinguish a vertigo's pathogenesis. The diagnosis is complex, expensive, and not always available across the board. We present a novel location- and time-independent mobile application for videonystagmography (VNG) to support vertigo patients and medical staff. No additional hardware is necessary. The app uses artificial intelligence for eye tracking and to detect a horizontal nystagmus. A feasibility study of the mobile VNG with 13 healthy volunteers was performed. Each participant underwent a caloric vestibular testing to provoke the presence of a vestibular nystagmus. It could be shown that a smartphone-based VNG is possible.

Abstract

Vietnamese cassava varieties constitute the fundamental and pivotal element in the sustainable development programme for cassava. This article aims to encapsulate the advancements made over nearly five decades in breeding and enhancing Vietnamese cassava varieties. It delineates the suitable cassava variety structures for each period and ecological region. The selection of cassava varieties exhibiting high starch yield and disease resistance, coupled with the establishment of a suitable and efficient cassava cultivation model, exemplified by 10T for Vietnamese cassava varieties KM568, KM539, KM537, KM569, and KM94, stands as a cornerstone for sustaining cassava development over the years. Presently, we advocate for farmers to cultivate promising cassava varieties such as KM568 or KM539 (an enhanced version of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) cassava variety C39, refined through multiple breeding cycles from 2004 onwards), KM537, KM569, or HN1 (originally known as TMEB419), alongside popular cassava varieties: KM440, KM419, KM94, KM7, STB1, KM414, KM98-7, KM140, KM98-5, KM98-1. We have conducted Distinctness, Uniformity, and Stability (DUS) and Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) tests, showcasing outstanding cassava varieties in large-scale farming, thereby providing compelling evidence for the prudent conservation and sustainable development of cassava. Vietnamese cassava progression (1975 to date) has traversed six stages, with five waves of restructuring cassava varieties, aligning with target orientations, farming conditions, and market demands, culminating in 16 popular cassava varieties and four promising cassava varieties KM568, KM539, KM537, and KM569.

Abstract

Gamma-ray spectrometric responses of Archean rocks were studied in order to define a characteristic signature for these rocks. As the half-life of the most frequent Thorium isotope (232Th – half life of 14.05 Ga) is more than 3 times longer relative to the Uranium isotope (238U – half life of 4.50 Ga), a low response of radiation intensity in the spectral range of decay series of Uranium relative to that of Thorium is expected for Archean rocks. Based on this theoretical aspect, associated with gamma-ray spectrometric responses parametrically studied in several Archean areas of Brazil, gamma-ray and magnetometric structural interpretation, follow-up field studies, micropetrography, lithogeochemistry, and geochronology (U-Pb in zircon), it was possible to define and identify previously unidentified Archean rocks (2.82 Ga) tectonically imbricated amid Neoproterozoic magmatic arc terrains. This discovery has geotectonic implications regarding the magnitude of the Transbrasiliano Lineamento and its potential to fragment large Archean blocks and arrange them aligned within the Tocantins Province, Central Brazil.

Abstract

An industrial nuclear technique based on the use of an X-ray profiler was implemented to estimate the densities or concentrations of sediments present in an Atlantic maritime zone in the areas subjected to dredging under the governance of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).The sediment profiles show in most areas there is a concentration of between 1.00-1.15 g/cm³ except for one area in particular, the density starts at 1.20 g/cm³ and even reaches values greater than 1.50 g/cm³; therefore, an already consolidated sediment is present, which, depending on the depth found. Values of 1.265 g/cm³, 1.297 g/cm³, 1.185 g/cm³ obtained by ACP previous studies are within the range of 1.20–1.30 g/cm³ measured with the nucleonic gauge. However, it should be noted that during the tests with the X ray profiler, sediment densities values greater than the aforementioned limit were also obtained that varying according at depths close to 12 m and 18 m with values reached up to 1.513 g/cm³ and 1.60 g/cm³, respectively. This demonstrates that sediment accumulation depends on depth. This nucleonic gauge is feasible technique for the study of the sedimentation phenomenon in channel basins and even in other projects nationwide.

Abstract

The fauna of Loricifera along a north-south longitudinal transect following the Atacama Trench was explored. Whereas no loriciferans were collected from the actual trench, the continental slope and surrounding abyssal plains yielded two species of Rugiloricus and two of Pliciloricus. All four species are considered as new to science, but only one of them could be formally described. The new species, Pliciloricus ukupachaensis sp. nov., is closely related with the North Atlantic Pliciloricus leocaudatus, and the two species share different morphological traits, including an enlarged anal field with conspicuous pentagonal and hexagonal fields formed by strong, cuticular ridges. Among other peculiar traits, the new species is characterised by having strongly reduced trichoscalid plates and no double trichoscalids. Comparison with previously published, unidentified specimens suggests that the new species’ distributional range might reach as far as Oregon off the US west coast.

Abstract

Studies reveal that mangroves have the ability to store underground carbon more than a tropical forest, and this function is classified as the second most important to mitigate the effects of climate change. However, part of the carbon fixed returns to the atmosphere, and this is done through soil respiration. The present study seeks to quantify the total soil efflux (a subrogate of total soil respiration) that includes both autotrophic and heterotrophic soil efflux, emitted by a Panama’s mangrove swamp, as well as to investigate what drivers are important. Firstly, 3 plots were established with predominant mangroves species, such as salty mangrove tree (Avicennia bicolor Standl.) and black mangrove tree (Avicennia germinans L.). Secondly, a forest inventory was carried out in one ha, resulting in 371 trees ha−1, where the salty mangrove tree prevailed with 219 individuals in front of the black mangrove tree, with 152 trees. In addition, tree level measurements were performed such as diameter at breast height (DBH), crown diameter and distance between trees. Third, using a Licor 6400XT infrared gas analyzer system and a meteorological tower, soil CO2 fluxes and air and soil temperature were measured respectively. Results showed a total of 33.61 t of CO2 ha−1 emitted by the soil of the mangrove in 3.5 months.
