Objectives To assess the prevalence of canine parainfluenza virus, canine adenovirus type 2, canine distemper virus, canine respiratory coronavirus and influenza virus A infections in: (1) privately-owned or, (2) kennelled dogs showing signs consistent with canine infectious respiratory disease and, (3) clinically healthy dogs in Vienna, Austria. Materials and methods Prospectively, nasal and tonsillar swabs from 214 dogs affected with infectious respiratory disease, and 50 healthy control dogs were tested for nucleic acids specific to the various viral infections. Concurrent bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from 31 dogs with chronic respiratory disease was investigated for the same viral pathogens. Additionally, anti-canine respiratory coronavirus antibody concentrations were measured in paired blood samples from 30 acutely diseased dogs. Results Canine respiratory coronavirus (7.5%) and canine parainfluenza virus (6.5%) were the most commonly detected viruses in samples from the upper airways of dogs with respiratory infections. Serological results showed a significant seroconversion in response to coronavirus in 50% of the examined cases. None of the samples was positive for influenza virus A-specific nucleic acid. Canine coronavirus-specific nucleic acid was detected in 4.0% of healthy dogs. Clinical significance Canine coronavirus should be considered as a clinically relevant cause of infectious respiratory disease in crowded dog populations. For sample collection, the nasal mucosa can be recommended as the favoured site. Analysis of paired serum samples aids verification of canine coronavirus infection in respiratory disease.

Myringotomy is a well-accepted method for diagnosing and treating otitis media in dogs having an intact tympanic membrane. In a recent study, the contamination rate of middle ear aspirates from the external ear canal via myringotomy was 67%. To evaluate the iatrogenic contamination rate of the middle ear aspirates by material from the ear canal, using a novel technique: Vertical access to the tympanic membrane from beneath the patient. Thirty-six ears from 20 canine Fresh cadavers with a CT scan negative for otitis externa and otitis media were video-otoscopically flushed with the ear upside. The instillation of the fluorescent dye into the ear canal and immediate retrieval were performed. With the patient positioned on a custom-made fenestrated table plate, a modified video-otoscopically guided myringotomy approaching the tympanum vertically from underneath, was performed. Contamination rates were assessed by the visual detection of fluorescent dye within the aspirated fluid, either by yellow staining solely, or a positive fluorescence test. Cytology and microbial cultivation were accomplished. Middle ear sample contamination by the material from the ear canal was identified in 2 of 36 (5.55%) ears. Neither a change in colour nor fluorescence was detected in 34 of 36 (94.44%) middle ear samples. Sixteen of 36 (44.44%) external ear canal samples and 4 of 36 (11.11%) middle ear aspirates had positive bacterial culture. This novel technique is a promising method for middle ear material collection in patients with concurrent otitis externa.

Highlights • Sample collection via myringotomy is associated with a high contamination rate. • The suitability of this method for detection of otitis media is questionable. • Iatrogenic spread of pathogenic microorganisms into the middle ear is possible., Myringotomy for sample collection from the middle ear cavity for cytology and bacterial culture is considered a routine method to diagnose otitis media in dogs. The objective of this study was to determine the rate of contamination of middle ear aspirates with material from the external ear canal obtained by video-otoscopic guided myringotomy. In canine cadavers (n = 17) free from otitis externa the external ear canals were flushed under video-otoscopic control and a fluorescent dye was instilled. After removal of residual fluid a myringotomy was performed. If air was aspirated, 1 mL of saline was instilled through the same myringotomy needle into the middle ear cavity and re-aspirated. Contamination from the external ear canal was demonstrated by positive fluorescence of the aspirate. Bacterial cultures and cytological examinations of the external ear canals and middle ear cavities were performed. Data from 28 ears under investigation were included. In 19 of 28 middle ear aspirates (67.9%), clear yellow fluorescent fluid was obtained, indicating a contamination from the external ear canal. Microorganisms were detected in 4 of 26 middle ear samples (15.4%) and in 15 of 26 external ear canals (57.7%). Sample collection by myringotomy in this study was associated with a high contamination rate, implying that the suitability of this method for detection of otitis media in patients with concurrent otitis externa is questionable. Furthermore, the potential for iatrogenic spread of pathogenic microorganisms into the middle ear cavity needs to be considered.

A lack of colostrum may delay postnatal intestinal development in foals. Therefore, in this study, the effect of colostrum withdrawal on duodenal development of newborn foals was investigated. Shetland foals were fed either colostrum (group COL, n = 5) or milk replacer (group MR, n = 8) by nasogastric tube over the first 24 hours of life, and all foals received one liter of hyperimmune plasma. On day 3 of life, duodenal biopsies were taken via gastroduodenoscopy. Expression of mRNA for receptors for insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), IGF2, and transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) was analyzed by real-time PCR. Biopsies were analyzed for IGF receptors 1 and 2, TGFβ receptor 1, immunostaining for Ki-67 proliferation marker, lectin binding, and histomorphology. The mRNA expression of receptors for IGF1, IGF2, and TGFs in the duodenum of newborn foals was not altered by withholding colostrum. The number of goblet cells in the epithelium of the duodenum was greater in MR compared with COL foals (1.95% ± 1.15 vs. 1.25% ± 0.75), whereas villus length did not differ between groups. Immunohistochemistry of Ki-67 and lectin-binding patterns was similar in foals of both groups. Results indicate that a lack of colostrum is without detrimental effects on postnatal duodenal development in foals.

Das Atemwegssyndrom brachyzephaler Hunderassen, die sich aufgrund ihrer Kopfform groser Beliebtheit erfreuen, geht mit mehr oder weniger schweren klinischen Symptomen bis hin zum Erstickungstod einher. Erkrankungen der unteren Atemwege konnen den Krankheitsverlauf erschweren und prognostischen Einfluss nehmen, sodass eine diagnostische Aufarbeitung sinnvoll ist.

OBJECTIVES To compare characteristics of nasal discharge caused by different intranasal aetiologies in dogs. METHODS Medical records of 105 dogs with nasal discharge due to intranasal disease were retrospectively reviewed with special focus on composition, severity, duration and localisation of discharge. On the basis of diagnostic findings, cases were classified into different disease groups and characteristics of discharge were compared between groups. RESULTS Cases were classified as having non-specific rhinitis (n=42), nasal neoplasia (n=23), foreign bodies (n=21), nasal mycosis (n=7) and miscellaneous disorders (n=13). Dogs with foreign bodies or nasal mycosis were significantly younger. Mucous components of discharge occurred more often in non-specific rhinitis and nasal neoplasia, although haemorrhagic components predominated in nasal neoplasia when discharge lasted e14 days. Pure or mixed haemorrhagic discharge was significantly more common with nasal neoplasia, foreign bodies and nasal mycosis. Purulent components were associated with longer duration of discharge and predominantly seen in non-specific rhinitis and foreign bodies. Dogs with foreign bodies were presented earlier and sneezing was more frequent. Nasal stridor was significantly more often observed in dogs with nasal neoplasia. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Characteristics of nasal discharge and associated clinical signs might aid in planning the diagnostic approach, but a combination of diagnostic techniques is still required to confirm a diagnosis.

Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is common in dogs. Despite the known importance of intestinal lymphocytes in its pathogenesis, little is known about the role of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) in IBD. Objectives The aims of this study were (1) comparison of PBLs analyzed by flow cytometry (FCM) in IBD dogs and healthy controls and (2) comparison of PBLs in IBD dogs at the time of diagnosis and in dogs in clinical remission. Animals Whole blood samples of 19 IBD dogs at the time of diagnosis and blood samples of 6 dogs in clinical remission were collected. Ten healthy dogs served as controls. Methods In this prospective observational study, PBLs were analyzed with multicolor FCM by staining with a panel of anticanine and cross-reactive monoclonal antibodies against T- and B-cell differentiation antigens, including CD45, CD3, CD4, CD8α, CD8β, TCRαβ, TCRγδ, CD79αcy, and CD21. Results The IBD patients’ PBLs had significantly decreased percentages of TCRγδ+ T lymphocytes (median: healthy dogs, 3.32; IBD dogs, 0.97; P = 0.03) and CD21+ B cells (median: healthy dogs, 27.61; IBD dogs, 17.26; P = 0.04). There were no significant differences in PBLs between pretreatment and follow-up samples. Conclusions and Clinical Importance The differences between PBLs in healthy and IBD dogs analyzed by FCM indicate an imbalance of lymphocytes with different immunologic functions and emphasize the potential value of this technique in a larger cohort of dogs. The PBLs did not differ between IBD dogs before treatment and clinically well-controlled dogs after treatment.

Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by reversible bronchoconstriction and airflow obstruction due to mucus hypersecretion, inflammatory infiltrates, and edema. Common symptoms are coughing, wheezing, and respiratory distress. The disease seems to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental interactions. This short characterization of bronchial asthma does not only apply to humans but similarly to domestic animals, even though the pathophysiology as well as nomenclature may differ. Feline asthma (FA) is one of the most important syndromes out of a spectrum of chronic inflammatory airway diseases in cats. In dogs a syndrome termed eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy (EBP) exists, which shares some similarities with pulmonary eosinophilic syndromes in humans. Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) or “heaves” is described as a naturally occurring asthma-like disease in horses. Therapeutic efforts in both human and animal patients target the underlying inflammatory response of the disease by administration of anti-inflammatory glucocorticoids. Bronchoconstriction can be prevented or eased by administration of anti-obstructive s2-sympathomimetics. The only curative treatment in allergic or IgE-mediated asthma is allergen-specific immunotherapy, which is readily applied in human asthmatic patients. In domestic animals, this therapeutic option is used only in experimental settings because successful identification of causative allergens is often difficult.

This study investigated volumetric capnography (VC) in detecting airway responsiveness following airway challenge using carbachol in seven sedated dogs via face mask. Nebulised saline was administered, followed by increasing concentrations of nebulised carbachol until airflow limitation occurred (EP). Dead space (DS) variables and shape indices of the VC curve were calculated automatically after entering arterial carbon dioxide tension. Airway DS, airway DS to tidal volume (VT) ratio and the intercept of slope 2 of the VC curve decreased significantly at EP by 10%, 13% and 16%, respectively, minute ventilation, VT and alveolar DS increased significantly at EP by 49%, 22% and 200%, respectively. We conclude that VC and derived indices may be used to verify a reaction to airway challenge caused by carbachol in sedated dogs.

In this retrospective study of 41 cats with chronic nasal disease diagnoses included nasal neoplasia (n = 19), idiopathic chronic rhinosinusitis (ICRS) (n = 12), nasopharyngeal polyps (n = 3), foreign bodies (n = 2), nasopharyngeal stenosis (n = 1) and nasal aspergillosis (n = 1). In 3 cats diagnosis could not be established despite thorough work-up. Gender, indoor or outdoor housing, quality or quantity of nasal discharge, bacteriological findings of nasal flushes, radiology and CT findings did not differ significantly between cats with neoplasia and cats with ICRS. Cats with neoplasia were older (3 - 15, median 11 years) and showed clinical signs for a shorter period of time (1 - 8, median 2 months) than cats with ICRS (age 1 - 13, median 7.5 years; signs: 1 - 36, median 5 months). In all cats with neoplasia a mass was detected rhinoscopically, while this was only seen in 30 % of cats with ICRS. The exact diagnosis has to be established by examination of biopsy samples. A combination of physical examination, imaging studies and rhinoscopy with cytological and histopathological examination of samples enhances the likelihood for a correct diagnosis.

Daraus resultiert, dass in vielen Fallen eine exakte Diagnosestellung nicht erforderlich ist und die Therapie symptomatisch erfolgen kann. Obwohl zunehmend ein verantwortungsvoller Umgang mit antimikrobiell wirksamen Medikamenten gefordert wird und folglich die generelle Verabreichung von Antibiotika bei akutem Durchfall hinterfragt werden muss, stellt sie eine in der Kleintiermedizin haufig geubte Praxis dar. Die vorliegende Abhandlung thematisiert die Sinnhaftigkeit einer solchen Vorgehensweise.

Die Bronchoalveolarlavage stellt eine Technik zur Gewinnung diagnostischen Materials aus den kleinen Atemwegen und dem Alveolarbereich dar. Bei richtiger Indikationsstellung und unter Berucksichtigung moglicher Kontraindikationen ist die BAL eine sehr wertvolle und zugleich auch sichere diagnostische Masnahme in der Aufarbeitung von Erkrankungen der kleinen Atemwege und der Lunge.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects on quantitative and qualitative microbial content of endoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in healthy dogs using a laryngeal mask airway (LMA). It was hypothesised that oropharyngeal protection might prevent contamination of BALF with oropharyngeal microflora. Ten healthy Beagle dogs were randomly assigned to two groups and underwent endoscopic BAL on two occasions, either via an open unprotected oropharynx with oxygen supply provided via a nasal catheter (NT) or through a sterile LMA. For the second sampling, groups were switched. BALF analysis included quantitative microbial culture, nucleated cell counts and cytology. The mean (±SD) number of colony forming units (CFU)/mL found in the BALF using the LMA was 25,610 ± 22,943 in the right lung (RL) and 22,510 ± 18,779 in the left (LL). With the NT technique, the figures were 21,068 ± 19,375 for the RL and 16,060 ± 15,523 for the LL, respectively. Nucleated cell counts/μL were 691.0 ± 181.6 (RL) and 734.0 ± 171.6 (LL) for LMA, and 772.0 ± 251.0 (RL) and 748 ± 163.2 (LL) for NT. No significant differences were detected either in the number of CFU/mL or in the diversity of bacterial species with the two methods. A significant increase in BALF bacterial counts (with reduced species diversity) was observed on the second compared to the first sampling regardless of the method used. Protection of the oral cavity and oropharynx using an LMA had no significant influence on BALF bacterial counts. The findings suggest that with careful endoscope insertion, the risk of contamination of BALF by resident and transient oropharyngeal microflora can be negligible.

The purpose of the study was to compare barometric whole body plethysmography (BWBP) and its derived parameter, enhanced pause (PENH), with conventional respiratory mechanics measurements. Resistance (RL), dynamic compliance (Cdyn) and pleural pressure changes were measured in six healthy anaesthetised Beagle dogs using a pneumotachograph and oesophageal balloon technique consecutive to BWBP-derived variables. Upper airway airflow limitation was established (1) by a filter or (2) by insertion of a narrow endotracheal tube. Bronchoconstriction was induced by nebulisation of carbachol at increasing concentrations until PENH exceeded 300% baseline. Upper airway narrowing significantly increased resistance (baseline RL 2.0+/-0.3, RL filter 11.8+/-3.2, RL luminal narrowing 21.1+/-2.3cm H(2)O/L/s; P0.03), whereas PENH did not change significantly (baseline PENH 0.55+/-0.17, PENH filter 0.49+/-0.10; PENH luminal narrowing 0.50+/-0.18; P0.05). Carbachol-induced bronchoconstriction caused a significant increase in PENH (baseline PENH 0.43+/-0.14, PENH carbachol 2.62+/-2.14; P0.02) and resistance (baseline RL 2.1+/-0.3, RL carbachol 28.8+/-13.0 cm H2O/L/s; P0.01), and a pronounced drop in compliance (baseline Cdyn 163.3+/-73.9, Cdyn carbachol 9.7+/-2.9mL/cmH2O; P0.02). It was concluded that BWBP detects airflow limitation due to bronchoconstriction but not due to upper airway obstruction in healthy dogs. BWBP represents a valid, although not very sensitive screening tool for respiratory function testing.

The effects of pharmacological bronchoprovocation on airflow patterns and surrogate respiratory parameters assessed by barometric whole body plethysmography (BWBP) were investigated in healthy dogs, previously exposed to cadmium chloride inhalation. BWBP-derived respiratory variables were calculated (1) at baseline and (2) following nebulisation of increasing concentrations of histamine, carbachol and adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) until enhanced pause (PENH) increased to 300% of baseline (PCPENH300). Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cytology before (BCC) and after (ACC) cadmium chloride inhalation revealed cadmium-induced airway inflammation. Neutrophils increased from 6.7 +/- 7.3% (728 +/- 104/microL) BCC to 77.8 +/- 8.6% (3255 +/- 1407/microL) ACC. The purpose of our study was to investigate the effects of nebulized adenosine 5’monophosphate on airflow limitation in healthy cats determined by barometric whole body plethysmography (BWBP), in comparison to the effects of carbachol. Ten healthy 4- to 6-year-old domestic shorthair cats were included in the study. Each cat was placed in a BWBP plexiglass chamber (volume 38 l). Changes in box pressure were measured at baseline and after nebulization of vehicle and increasing concentrations of carbachol and adenosine 5’- monophosphate. Airway responsiveness was monitored as increases in enhanced pause (PENH), a unitless variable derived from dose-response curves estimating airflow limitation. The chosen endpoint was the agonist concentration which increased PENH to 300% of the value obtained after saline nebulization (PCPENH 300). Inter-day repeatability of measurements was assessed by repeated bronchoprovocations with both agonists 2-3 days apart. For carbachol, PCPENH300 was reached in all cats and correlated significantly between days (mean ± SD; 0.54 ± 0.42 mg/ml and 0.64 ± 0.45 mg/ml respectively; r = 0.58, p < 0.05) In contrast, we found no reaction to adenosine 5’monophosphate even with the highest concentration nebulized during both measurements. At baseline, mean ± SD PENH was 0.47 ± 0.18 and 0.58 ± 0.24 (measurements 1 and 2), whereas PENH after 500 mg/ml adenosine 5’- monophosphate was 0.46 ± 0.20 and 0.71 ± 0.37. All bronchoprovocation tests were well tolerated by the cats. We conclude that healthy airways in cats do not demonstrate airway responsiveness to inhaled adenosine 5’- monophosphate. This is in agreement with observations in humans as well as our previous findings in dogs, where adenosine 5’- monophosphate had no effect on healthy canine airways, but caused significant airflow limitation after induction of acute bronchitis. To define the value of bronchoprovocation testing with adenosine 5’- monophosphate in the feline respiratory tract, further investigation of this agonist in cats with spontaneous lower airway disease will be required.

The canine gastric mucosa is known to be a habitat for various Helicobacter species. So far, five Helicobacter species have been described from the canine gastric mucosa, but histological studies have demonstrated a greater variety. In order to gain more information on diversity of canine gastric mucosa colonising helicobacters, biopsy samples of four pet dogs were examined by DNA-based techniques. PCR with a primer pair binding specifically to the 16S rDNA of the species of the genus Helicobacter and generating a fragment of approximately 400 bp indicated the presence of Helicobacter strains in the stomachs of the four dogs. PCR products were cloned into Escherichia coli DH10B and PCR-re-amplified 16S rDNA fragments were subjected to amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) employing restriction enzyme HhaI. Restriction profiles indicated the presence of at least two different Helicobacter species in two dogs. Partial sequences of 16S rDNA of six clones were compared with sequences available in the EMBL data bank. Two sequences obtained from different dogs were identical with the corresponding sequences of Helicobacter pylori strains. Three sequences showed highest but moderate similarity values to H. pylori (96.6-98.0%) and one sequence to Helicobacter salomonis (97.3%). In contrast to previous reports our data implicate that the gastric mucosa of dogs may be colonised by strains of H. pylori or a very closely related species but they also confirm indications for the presence of so far uncultivated species of Helicobacter.

Summary As certain quinolones can interfere with the metabolism of theophylline by competitive inhibition of the hepatic microsomal cytochrome P450 system, concomitant use of these drugs with theophylline could result in theophylline toxicity. This study investigated the effect of orally administered marbofloxacin (2 and 5 mg/kg each once daily) on steady-state plasma pharmacokinetics of theophylline after concomitant oral administration of a sustained release theophylline preparation in dogs. Marbofloxacin caused some alteration in theophylline metabolism. A 2 mg/kg dose of marbofloxacin did not clearly result in an increased area under the concentration – time curve (AUC) or decreased clearance of theophylline, but at a dose of 5 mg/kg, a statistically significant increase in AUC and a decrease in the total clearance of theophylline was found. The 26% reduction in theophylline clearance is probably not clinically significant in healthy dogs, but for dogs with renal impairment, there might be a chance of theophylline accumulation when dosed concomitantly with marbofloxacin.

Objective—To evaluate the association between airway reactivity and age, sex, body weight, and radiographic findings in cats. Animals—32 mature cats that constituted 2 age groups (17 young cats that were 1 to 2 years old and 15 old cats that were 12 to 13 years old). Procedure—Cats were placed in the chamber of a barometric whole-body plethysmograph (volume, 38 L), and box pressure was measured at baseline and after aerosol administration of increasing concentrations of carbachol. Airway reactivity was assessed by monitoring increases in enhanced pause (PENH), a unitless variable that measures bronchoconstriction as derived from dose-response curves. The endpoint chosen was the provocative concentration of carbachol that increased PENH to 300% of the baseline value (PCPENH300). Results—We did not find a correlation between PCPENH300 and sex, body weight, number of eosinophils, PENH before bronchoconstriction, respiratory frequency, tidal volume, or minute ventilation. Airway reactivity was significantly less in the old cats (mean ± SD PCPENH300, 0.578 ± 0.051%), compared with the value for the young cats (0.053 ± 0.006%). Radiographic patterns differed significantly between groups of cats; a greater proportion of old cats (12/15) had bronchointerstitial patterns, compared with the proportion of young cats (4/17). Conclusion and Clinical Relevance—These data support the notion that age exerts a strong influence on airway reactivity in adult cats, and radiographic differences suggest that structural changes in older cats may contribute to this effect. These findings have important implications for interpretation of results of airway reactivity tests in cats. (Am J Vet Res 2003;64:26–31)

OBJECTIVES To describe the long term use of inhaled budesonide in cats with naturally occurring asthma and chronic bronchitis and to measure its effects. METHODS Owners of 43 cats diagnosed with asthma or chronic bronchitis, which had been prescribed 400 µg of inhaled budesonide twice daily, were contacted and information was retrieved by a questionnaire. Nineteen cats still receiving inhaled budesonide after more than 2 months were re-evaluated clinically and underwent barometric whole body plethysmography and adrenocorticotropic hormone-stimulation testing. RESULTS In 20 of the cats, therapy had been withdrawn by the owners. Cats (n=23) still receiving inhaled budesonide improved clinically and 19 cats that were reevaluated had significantly lower basal PENH (P=0·048) and higher PCPenh300 (P=0·049) values than before treatment. Corticosteroid-induced side effects were not observed in any cats but hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression was detected in 3 of 15 cases. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Treatment with inhaled budesonide was well tolerated, resulting in improvement of clinical signs and barometric whole body plethysmography parameters. Although inhaled budesonide therapy was found to cause suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in some cats, no cats showed clinical signs attributable to corticosteroid side effects.

An increase in the number of eosinophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) is a hallmark of feline asthma; however, a wide range in the percentage of eosinophils in BALF has been documented in healthy cats. In this study, BALF and lung tissue were collected from 15 cats without respiratory disease, BALF was taken from 15 cats with asthma and lung tissue was collected from six different asthmatic cats. Total nucleated cell count (TNCC) and inflammatory cell percentages were measured in BALF and lung tissue was evaluated microscopically. Asthmatic cats had a significantly higher eosinophil count in lung tissue, but BALF TNCC did not differ significantly between groups. The aim of the study was to investigate changes in volumetric capnography ( V C ) variables during bronchoconstriction in dogs and compare it with total respiratory resistance ( R L ) measured with a Fleisch pneumotachograph. Six dogs were challenged with increasing concentrations of carbachol until obvious signs of bronchoconstriction were seen. All V C parameters were obtained before, directly after, 10 and 20 min after maximal bronchoconstriction. The slope of phase III (SIII) and airway and alveolar dead space parameters were significantly different from baseline directly after the challenge. The V C curve obtained a typical shape at the time of maximal bronchoconstriction and a trend to return to baseline shape was seen over time. A significant correlation was found for all aforementioned parameters with R L . We conclude that the shape of the V C curve in combination with dead space calculation can be used to verify bronchoconstriction on a breath-to-breath basis.

A 10-month-old sexually intact female German Shorthaired Pointer examined because of lethargy, episodes of fever, inappetence, and vomiting was found to have severe hypercalcemia. Results of laboratory testing, radiography, and ultrasonography excluded previously recognized causes of hypercalcemia in dogs. Instead, the dog was found to have purulent endometritis and an incompletely resorbed fetus. Treatment with fluids i.v., diuretics, and calcitonin failed to adequately reduce serum calcium concentration, but serum calcium concentration was normal within 4 days after the dog underwent an ovariohysterectomy. Retention of one or more fetuses and endometritis should be included in the differential diagnosis for dogs with hypercalcemia.

Airway hyperresponsiveness is a key feature of human asthma and chronic bronchitis and response to the indirectly acting agonist adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) is thought to reflect underlying airway inflammation. To examine whether airway responsiveness testing (ART) with AMP may be used to differentiate healthy cats from those with asthma (FA) and chronic bronchitis (CB), 24 cats (9 FA, 6 CB, 9 controls) underwent ART with AMP at concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 500mg/mL using barometric whole body plethysmography. The defined endpoint of ART, an increase in enhanced pause (Penh) exceeding 300% of the post-saline value (baseline), was reached in 9/15 patients (7 FA, 2 CB), but in none of the controls. In a study for the isolation of new Helicobacter strains, biopsy samples were taken from the gastric mucosa of dogs and subjected to PCR amplification using a Helicobacter-specific primer pair (H276f and H676r, directed to the 16S rDNA) to identify members of this genus in the specimens. From one Helicobacter positive sample, a bacterial strain was isolated which displayed a characteristic band after PCR amplification with the Helicobacter-specific primer pair. The isolate designated H2/98-FUNDUS was motile, oxidase-, catalase- and aminopeptidase-positive and grew only under microaerophilic conditions at 37 degrees C. The bacterium was classified by a polyphasic approach, including analysis of the isoprenoid quinones, fatty acids, polar lipids and partial 16S rDNA sequence. Analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence (1003 bases) indicated that the strain H2/98-FUNDUS is a member of the genus Brevundimonas and most closely related to Brevundimonas aurantiaca DSM 4731T (99.5% sequence similarity). Isolate H2/98-FUNDUS contained a predominant ubiquinone Q-10 and a fatty acid profile with the major compounds C18:1 and C16:0. In the polar lipid extract, phosphatidylglycerol, six unknown phospholipids, one unknown phosphoglycolipid, two unknown glycolipids and two unknown aminolipids were detected. All these results indicate that H2/98-FUNDUS represents a new member of the genus Brevundimonas which gives a positive signal upon PCR employing the Helicobacter-specific primer pair.
