Search

Hybridization between localized 4$f$ and itinerant 5$d$6$s$ states in heavy fermion compounds is a well-studied phenomenon and commonly captured by the paradigmatic Anderson model. However, the investigation of additional electronic interactions, beyond the standard Anderson model, has been limited, despite their predicted important role in the exotic quasiparticle formation in mixed-valence systems. We investigate the 4$f$ states in TmSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ throughout a semimetal-insulator phase transition, which drastically varies the interactions related to the 4$f$ states. Using synchrotron-based hard x-ray and extreme ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, we resolve subtle peak splitting in the 4$f$ peaks near the Fermi level in the mixed-valent semimetal phase. The separation is enhanced by several tens of meV by increasing the lattice parameter by a few percent. Our results elucidate the evolving nature of the 4$f$ state across the phase transition, and provide direct experimental evidence for electronic interactions beyond the standard Anderson model in mixed-valence systems., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures for the main text, 6 pages and 5 figures for the supplementary

We report the experimental discovery of orbital vortex lines in the three-dimensional (3D) band structure of a topological semimetal. Combining linear and circular dichroism in soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission (SX-ARPES) with first-principles theory, we image the winding of atomic orbital angular momentum, thereby revealing - and determining the location of - lines of vorticity in full 3D momentum space. Our observation of momentum-space vortex lines with quantized winding number establishes an analogue to real-space quantum vortices, for instance, in type-II superconductors and certain non-collinear magnets. These results establish multimodal dichroism in SX-ARPES as an approach to trace 3D orbital textures. Our present findings particularly constitute the first imaging of non-trivial quantum-phase winding at line nodes and may pave the way to new orbitronic phenomena in quantum materials

We study the interplay of lattice, spin and orbital degrees of freedom in a two-dimensional model system: a flat square lattice of Te atoms on a Au(100) surface. The atomic structure of the Te monolayer is determined by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED-IV). Using spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), we observe a Te-Au interface state with highly anisotropic Rashba-type spin-orbit splitting at the X point of the Brillouin zone. Based on a profound symmetry and tight-binding analysis, we show how in-plane square lattice symmetry and broken inversion symmetry at the Te-Au interface together enforce a remarkably anisotropic orbital Rashba effect which strongly modulates the spin splitting., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Inducing a magnetic gap at the Dirac point of the topological surface state (TSS) in a 3D topological insulator (TI) is a route to dissipationless charge and spin currents. Ideally, magnetic order is present only at the surface and not in the bulk, e.g. through proximity of a ferromagnetic (FM) layer. However, such a proximity-induced Dirac mass gap has not been observed, likely due to insufficient overlap of TSS and the FM subsystem. Here, we take a different approach, namely FM extension, using a thin film of the 3D TI Bi$_2$Te$_3$, interfaced with a monolayer of the lattice-matched van der Waals ferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Robust 2D ferromagnetism with out-of-plane anisotropy and a critical temperature of $\text{T}_\text{c}\approx$~15 K is demonstrated by X-ray magnetic dichroism and electrical transport measurements. Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we observe the opening of a sizable magnetic gap in the 2D FM phase, while the surface remains gapless in the paramagnetic phase above T$_c$. This sizable gap indicates a relocation of the TSS to the FM ordered Mn moments near the surface, which leads to a large mutual overlap., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Hybridization between $f$ electrons and conduction bands ($c$-$f$ hybridization) is a driving force for many unusual phenomena. To provide insight into it, systematic studies of CeCoIn$_5$ heavy fermion superconductor have been performed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in a large angular range at temperature of $T=6$ K. The used photon energy of 122 eV corresponds to Ce $4d$-$4f$ resonance. Calculations carried out with relativistic multiple scattering Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and one-step model of photoemission yielded realistic simulation of the ARPES spectra indicating that Ce-In surface termination prevails. Surface states, which have been identified in the calculations, contribute significantly to the spectra. Effects of the hybridization strongly depend on wave vector. They include a dispersion of heavy electrons and bands gaining $f$-electron character when approaching Fermi energy. We have also observed a considerable variation of $f$-electron spectral weight at $E_F$, which is normally determined by both matrix element effects and wave vector dependent $c$-$f$ hybridization. Fermi surface scans covering a few Brillouin zones revealed large matrix element effects. A symmetrization of experimental Fermi surface, which reduces matrix element contribution, yielded a specific variation of $4f$-electron enhanced spectral intensity at $E_F$ around $\bar{\Gamma}$ and $\bar{M}$ points. Tight-binding approximation calculations for Ce-In plane provided the same universal distribution of $4f$-electron density for a range of values of the parameters used in the model., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Since the early days of Dirac flux quantization, magnetic monopoles have been sought after as a potential corollary of quantized electric charge. As opposed to magnetic monopoles embedded into the theory of electromagnetism, Weyl crystals exhibit Berry flux monopoles in reciprocal parameter space. As a function of crystal momentum, such monopoles locate at the degeneracy point of the Weyl cone. Here, we report momentum-resolved spectroscopic signatures of Berry flux monopoles in TaAs as a paradigmatic Weyl semimetal. We have probed the orbital and spin angular momentum (OAM and SAM) of the Weyl-fermion states by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy at bulk-sensitive soft X-ray energies (SX-ARPES) combined with photoelectron spin detection and circular dichroism. Supported by first-principles calculations, our measurements image characteristics of a topologically non-trivial winding of the OAM at the Weyl nodes and unveil a chirality-dependent SAM of the Weyl bands. Our results experimentally visualize the non-trivial momentum-space topology in a Weyl semimetal, promising to have profound implications for the study of quantum-geometric effects in solids.

Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), we investigate the surface electronic structure of the magnetic van der Waals compounds MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$, the $n=$~1 and 2 members of a modular (Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$(MnBi$_2$Te$_4$) series, which have attracted recent interest as intrinsic magnetic topological insulators. Combining circular dichroic, spin-resolved and photon-energy-dependent ARPES measurements with calculations based on density functional theory, we unveil complex momentum-dependent orbital and spin textures in the surface electronic structure and disentangle topological from trivial surface bands. We find that the Dirac-cone dispersion of the topologial surface state is strongly perturbed by hybridization with valence-band states for Bi$_2$Te$_3$-terminated surfaces but remains preserved for MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-terminated surfaces. Our results firmly establish the topologically non-trivial nature of these magnetic van der Waals materials and indicate that the possibility of realizing a quantized anomalous Hall conductivity depends on surface termination.

We present a combined soft x-ray and high-resolution vacuum-ultraviolet angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the electron-overdoped cuprate Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (PLCCO). Demonstration of its highly two-dimensional band structure enabled precise determination of the in-plane self-energy dominated by electron-electron scattering. Through analysis of this self-energy and the Fermi-liquid cut-off energy scale, we find -- in contrast to hole-doped cuprates -- a momentum isotropic and comparatively weak electron correlation in PLCCO. Yet, the self-energies extracted from multiple oxide systems combine to demonstrate a logarithmic divergent relation between the quasiparticle scattering rate and mass. This constitutes a spectroscopic version of the Kadowaki-Woods relation with an important merit -- the demonstration of Fermi liquid quasiparticle lifetime and mass being set by a single energy scale.

We use time-resolved momentum microscopy at a free-electron laser (FEL) and extend orbital tomography into the time domain to image the electronic wave functions of excited molecular orbitals. This technique provides unprecedented insight into the ultrafast interplay between structural and electronic dynamics. In this work we prove general applicability and establish the experimental conditions at FEL sources to minimize space charge effects and radiation damage. We investigate a bilayer pentacene film on Ag(110) by optical laser pump and FEL probe experiments. From the momentum microscopy signal, we obtain time-dependent momentum maps of the excited-state dynamics of both pentacene layers separately. Combining experimental observations with a theoretical study, we interpret the observed signal for the bottom layer as resulting from the charge redistribution between the molecule and the substrate induced by excitation. The layered van der Waals antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has been predicted to combine the band ordering of archetypical topological insulators such as Bi$_2$Te$_3$ with the magnetism of Mn, making this material a viable candidate for the realization of various magnetic topological states. We have systematically investigated the surface electronic structure of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$(0001) single crystals by use of spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. In line with theoretical predictions, the results reveal a surface state in the bulk band gap and they provide evidence for the influence of exchange interaction and spin-orbit coupling on the surface electronic structure., Comment: Revised version

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has recently been reported to emerge in magnetically-doped topological insulators. Although its general phenomenology is well established, the microscopic origin is far from being properly understood and controlled. Here we report on a detailed and systematic investigation of transition-metal (TM)-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with complementary experimental techniques, i.e., scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), resonant photoemission (resPES), and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we provide a complete spectroscopic characterization of both electronic and magnetic properties. Our results reveal that the TM dopants not only affect the magnetic state of the host material, but also significantly alter the electronic structure by generating impurity-derived energy bands. Our findings demonstrate the existence of a delicate interplay between electronic and magnetic properties in TM-doped TIs. In particular, we find that the fate of the topological surface states critically depends on the specific character of the TM impurity: while V- and Fe-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$ display resonant impurity states in the vicinity of the Dirac point, Cr and Mn impurities leave the energy gap unaffected. The single-ion magnetic anisotropy energy and easy axis, which control the magnetic gap opening and its stability, are also found to be strongly TM impurity-dependent and can vary from in-plane to out-of-plane depending on the impurity and its distance from the surface. Overall, our results provide general guidelines for the realization of a robust QAHE in TM-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$ in the ferromagnetic state., Comment: 40 pages, 13 figures

Samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$), a Kondo insulator with mixed valence, has recently attracted much attention as a possible host for correlated topological surface states. Here, we use a combination of x-ray absorption and reflectometry techniques, backed up with a theoretical model for the resonant $M_{4,5}$ absorption edge of Sm and photoemission data, to establish laterally averaged chemical and valence depth profiles at the surface of SmB$_6$. We show that upon cleaving, the highly polar (001) surface of SmB$_6$ undergoes substantial chemical and valence reconstruction, resulting in boron termination and a Sm$^{3+}$ dominated sub-surface region. Whereas at room temperature, the reconstruction occurs on a time scale of less than two hours, it takes about 24 hours below 50 K. The boron termination is eventually established, irrespective of the initial termination. Our findings reconcile earlier depth resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies performed at different temperatures and are important for better control of polarity and, as a consequence, surface states in this system.

Samarium hexaboride (SmB6), which lies in the mixed valence regime in the Anderson model, has been predicted to possess topologically protected surface states. The intensive investigations on SmB6 have brought up the long standing questions about the discrepancy between the surface and bulk electronic properties in rare-earth compounds in general. Here, we investigate and eventually clarify this discrepancy in the particular case of SmB6 by the photoemission core-level spectra. We focus on the change in both Sm and B states depending on time, temperature, probing depth, and surface termination on the cleaved (100) surface. Our spectra show that the unusual time-dependent change in the Sm valence occurs within a period of hours, which is not related to the adsorption of residual gases. Moreover, we observe a reduction of the surface feature in the B and Sm states on the same timescale accompanied by the formation of a subsurface region. Thus, it indicates the relatively slow charge redistribution between the surface and subsurface regions. Samarium hexaboride (SmB6) has been presumed to show a topological Kondo insulating state consisting of fully occupied quasiparticle bands in the concept of a Fermi liquid. This gap emerging below a small coherence temperature is the ultimate sign of coherence for a many-body system, which in addition induces a non-trivial topology. Here, we demonstrate that just one energy scale governs the gap formation in SmB6, which supports the Fermi liquid description. The temperature dependence of the gap formation in the mixed valence regime is captured within the dynamical mean field (DMFT) approximation to the periodic Anderson model (PAM). The scaling property of the model with the topological coherence temperature provides a strong connection to the photoemission spectra of SmB6. Our results suggest a simple way to compare a model study and an experiment result for heavy fermion insulators.

To resolve the controversial issue of the topological nature of the electronic structure of YbB$_{6}$, we have made a combined study using density functional theory (DFT) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Accurate determination of the low energy band topology in DFT requires the use of modified Becke-Johnson exchange potential incorporating the spin-orbit coupling and the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ of Yb $4f$ electrons as large as 7 eV. We have double-checked the DFT result with the more precise GW band calculation. ARPES is done with the non-polar (110) surface termination to avoid band bending and quantum well confinement that have confused ARPES spectra taken on the polar (001) surface termination. Thereby we show definitively that YbB$_{6}$ has a topologically trivial B 2$p$-Yb 5$d$ semiconductor band gap, and hence is a non-Kondo non-topological insulator (TI). In agreement with theory, ARPES shows pure divalency for Yb and a $p$-$d$ band gap of 0.3 eV, which clearly rules out both of the previous scenarios of $f$-$d$ band inversion Kondo TI and $p$-$d$ band inversion non-Kondo TI. We have also examined the pressure-dependent electronic structure of YbB$_{6}$, and found that the high pressure phase is not a Kondo TI but a \emph{p}-\emph{d} overlap semimetal., Comment: The main text is 6 pages with 4 figures, and the supplementary information contains 6 figures. 11 pages, 10 figures in total To be appeared in Phys. We report on the spectroscopic observation of a quantized electronic fine structure near the Fermi energy in thin Fe films grown on W(110). The quantum well states are detected down to binding energies of $\sim$10 meV by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The band dispersion of these states is found to feature a pronounced anisotropy within the surface plane: It is free-electron like along the $\bar{\Gamma \rm{H}}$-direction while it becomes heavy along $\bar{\Gamma \rm{N}}$. Density functional theory calculations identify the observed states to have both majority and minority spin character and indicate that the large anisotropy can be dependent on the number of Fe-layers and coupling to the substrate., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We studied the electronic structure of the Kondo lattice system Ce2Co0.8Si3.2 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The spectra obtained below the coherence temperature consist of a Kondo resonance, its spin-orbit partner and a number of dispersing bands. The quasiparticle weight related to the Kondo peak depends strongly on Fermi vectors associated with bulk bands. This indicates a highly anisotropic hybridization between conduction band and 4f electrons - V_{cf} in Ce2Co0.8Si3.2., Comment: 6 pages

The discovery of topologically non-trivial states in band insulators has induced an extensive search for topological phase in strongly correlated electron systems. In particular, samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$) has drawn much attention as it might represent a new class of condensed matter called topological Kondo insulator. Kondo insulators (KI) can have non-trivial Z$_2$ topology because the energy gap opens at the Fermi energy ($E_F$) by hybridization between an odd- parity renormalized $f$ band and an even- parity conduction $d$ band. However, the characteristics of SmB$_6$ deviate from the conventional KI because its gap is insensitive to doping and pressure. Thus, it is unclear what makes the gap of SmB$_6$ different from that of KI, and how the band inversion features occur. In this manuscript, we demonstrate the importance of charge fluctuations in SmB$_6$. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results reveal that with decreasing temperature the bottom of the $d$-$f$ hybridized band at the $\bar{\text{X}}$ point gradually shifts from below to above $E_F$. This shift accompanies a redistribution of spectral weight from the upper to the lower quasiparticle band, and reflects the change in both carrier density and the number of localized $f$ electron. Moreover, because this hybridized band is predicted to have odd parity and to induce a non-trivial $Z_{2}$ topology, we compare our ARPES spectra with theoretical surface band structures and find signatures of topological surface states. Therefore, our results indicate that SmB$_6$ is a charge fluctuating topological insulator having the odd-parity hybridized band above $E_F$ at the $X$ point. We present a comprehensive study of the adsorption behavior of iron phthalocyanine on the low-index crystal faces of silver. By combining measurements of the reciprocal space by means of photoelectron momentum mapping and low energy electron diffraction, the real space adsorption geometries are reconstructed. At monolayer coverage ordered superstructures exist on all studied surfaces containing one molecule in the unit cell in case of Ag(100) and Ag(111), and two molecules per unit cell for Ag(110). The azimuthal tilt angle of the molecules against the high symmetry directions of the substrate is derived from the photoelectron momentum maps. A comparative analysis of the momentum patterns on the substrates with different symmetry indicates that both constituents of the twofold degenerate FePc lowest unoccupied molecular orbital are occupied by charge transfer from the substrate at the interface.

The electronic structure of superconducting Fe1.03Te0.94S0.06 has been studied by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Experimental band topography is compared to the calculations using the methods of Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) with coherent potential approximation (CPA) and linearized augmented plane wave with local orbitals (LAPW+LO). The region of the Gamma point exhibits two hole pockets and a quasiparticle peak close to the chemical potential with undetectable dispersion. This flat band with mainly dz2 orbital character is formed most likely by the top of the outer hole pocket or is an evidence of the third hole band. It may cover up to 3 % of the Brillouin zone volume and should give rise to a Van Hove singularity. Studies performed for various photon energies indicate that at least one of the hole pockets has a two-dimensional character. The apparently nondispersing peak at the chemical potential is clearly visible for 40 eV and higher photon energies, due to an effect of photoionisation cross section rather than band dimensionality. Orbital characters calculated by LAPW+LO for stoichiometric FeTe do not reveal the flat dz2 band but are in agreement with the experiment for the other dispersions around Gamma in Fe1.03Te0.94S0.06., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We study the core hole-electron correlation in coherently coupled molecules by energy dispersive near edge X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy. In a transient phase, which exists during the transition between two bulk arrangements, 1,4,5,8-naphthalene-tetracarboxylicacid-dianhydride multilayer films exhibit peculiar changes of the line shape and energy position of the X-ray absorption signal at the C K-edge with respect to the bulk and gas phase spectra. By a comparison to a theoretical model based on a coupling of transition dipoles, which is established for optical absorption, we demonstrate that the observed spectroscopic differences can be explained by an intermolecular delocalized core hole-electron pair. We study, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the evolution of the electronic structure in URu2Si2 at the Gamma, Z and X high-symmetry points from the high-temperature Kondo-screened regime to the low-temperature `hidden-order' (HO) state. At all temperatures and symmetry points, we find structures resulting from the interaction between heavy and light bands, related to the Kondo lattice formation. At the X point, we directly measure a hybridization gap of 11 meV already open at temperatures above the ordered phase. Strikingly, we find that while the HO induces pronounced changes at Gamma and Z, the hybridization gap at X does not change, indicating that the hidden-order parameter is anisotropic. Furthermore, at the Gamma and Z points, we observe the opening of a gap in momentum in the HO state, and show that the associated electronic structure results from the hybridization of a light electron band with the Kondo-lattice bands characterizing the paramagnetic state., Comment: Updated published version. Using high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy we demonstrate that the electronic structure of several organic monolayer systems, in particular 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride and Copper-phtalocyanine on Ag(111), is characterized by a peculiar excitation feature right at the Fermi level. This feature displays a strong temperature dependence and is immediatly connected to the binding energy of the molecular states, determined by the coupling between the molecule and the substrate. At low temperatures, the line-width of this feature, appearing on top of the partly occupied lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the free molecule, amounts to only $\approx 25$ meV, representing an unusually small energy scale for electronic excitations in these systems. We report on the results of a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) study on the ordered surface alloy CePt5. The temperature dependence of the spectra show the formation of the coherent low-energy heavy-fermion band near the Fermi level. We demonstrate the application of orbital k-space tomography for the analysis of the bonding occurring at metal-organic interfaces. Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), we probe the spatial structure of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the former lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of one monolayer 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) on Ag(110) and (111) surfaces and in particular the influence of the hybridization between the orbitals and the electronic states of the substrate. We are able to quantify and localize the substrate contribution to the LUMO and thus prove the metal-molecule hybrid character of this complex state., Comment: Accepted version, PRL. We propose a new criterion for distinguishing the Hertz-Millis (HM) and the local quantum critical (LQC) mechanism in heavy fermion systems with a magnetic quantum phase transition (QPT). The criterion is based on our finding that the spin screening of Kondo ions can be completely suppressed by the RKKY coupling to the surrounding magnetic ions even without magnetic ordering and that, consequently, the signature of this suppression can be observed in spectroscopic measurements above the magnetic ordering temperature. We apply the criterion to high-resolution photoemission (UPS) measurements on CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_{x}$ and conclude that the QPT in this system is dominated by the LQC scenario., Comment: Inveted paper, International Conference on Magnetism, ICM 2009, Karlsruhe. Solids with strong electron correlations generally develop exotic phases of electron matter at low temperatures. Among such systems, the heavy-fermion semi-metal URu2Si2 presents an enigmatic transition at To = 17.5 K to a `hidden order' state whose order parameter remains unknown after 23 years of intense research. Various experiments point to the reconstruction and partial gapping of the Fermi surface when the hidden-order establishes. However, up to now, the question of how this transition affects the electronic spectrum at the Fermi surface has not been directly addressed by a spectroscopic probe. Here we show, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, that a band of heavy quasi-particles drops below the Fermi level upon the transition to the hidden-order state. Our data provide the first direct evidence of a large reorganization of the electronic structure across the Fermi surface of URu2Si2 occurring during this transition, and unveil a new kind of Fermi-surface instability in correlated electron systems, Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

We present an X-ray photoemission study of the heavy-fermion system CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ across the magnetic quantum phase transition of this compound at temperatures above the single-ion Kondo temperature $T_K$. In dependence of the Au concentration $x$ we observe a sudden change of the $f$-occupation number $n_f$ and the core-hole potential $U_{df}$ at the critical concentration $x_c=0.1$. We interpret these findings in the framework of the single-impurity Anderson model. A quantum phase transition (QPT) in a heavy-fermion (HF) compound may destroy the Fermi liquid groundstate. However, the conditions for this breakdown have remained obscure. We report the first direct investigation of heavy quasiparticle formation and breakdown in the canonical system CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy at elevated temperatures without the complications of lattice coherence. Surprisingly, the single-ion Kondo energy scale $T_K$ exhibits an abrupt step near the quantum critical Au concentration of $x_c=0.1$. We show theoretically that this step is expected from a highly non-linear renormalization of the local spin coupling at each Ce site, induced by spin fluctuations on neighboring sites. We consider Kondo impurity systems with multiple local orbitals, such as rare earth ions in a metallic host or multi--level quantum dots coupled to metallic leads. It is shown that the multiplet structure of the local orbitals leads to multiple Kondo peaks above the Fermi energy $E_F$, and to ``shadow'' peaks below $E_F$. We use a slave boson mean field theory, which recovers the strong coupling Fermi liquid fixed point, to calculate the Kondo peak positions, widths, and heights analytically at T=0, and NCA calculations to fit the temperature dependence of high--resolution photoemission spectra of Ce compounds. In addition, an approximate conductance quantization for transport through multi--level quantum dots or single--atom transistors in the Kondo regime due to a generalized Friedel sum rule is demonstrated., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. We present a high-resolution photoemission study on the strongly correlated Ce-compounds CeCu_6, CeCu_2Si_2, CeRu_2Si_2, CeNi_2Ge_2, and CeSi_2. Using a normalization procedure based on a division by the Fermi-Dirac distribution we get access to the spectral density of states up to an energy of 5 k_BT above the Fermi energy E_F. Thus we can resolve the Kondo resonance and the crystal field (CF) fine-structure for different temperatures above and around the Kondo temperature T_K. The CF peaks are identified with multiple Kondo resonances within the multiorbital Anderson impurity model. Our theoretical 4f spectra, calculated from an extended non-crossing approximation (NCA), describe consistently the observed photoemission features and their temperature dependence. By fitting the NCA spectra to the experimental data and extrapolating the former to low temperatures, T_K can be extracted quantitatively. The resulting values for T_K and the crystal field energies are in excellent agreement with the results from bulk sensitive measurements, e.g. inelastic neutron scattering., Comment: 16 two-column pages, 10 figures

We present a detailed study on the influence of strong electron-phonon coupling to the photoemission spectra of lead. Representing the strong-coupling regime of superconductivity, the spectra of lead show characteristic features that demonstrate the correspondence of physical properties in the normal and the superconducting state, as predicted by the Eliashberg theory. These features appear on an energy scale of a few meV and are accessible for photoemission only by using modern spectrometers with high resolution in energy and angle., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We present a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the electron-phonon contribution to the lifetime broadening of the surface states on Cu(111) and Ag(111), in comparison with high-resolution photoemission results. The calculations, including electron and phonon states of the bulk and the surface, resolve the relative importance of the Rayleigh mode, being dominant for the lifetime at small hole binding energies. Including the electron-electron interaction, the theoretical results are in excellent agreement with the measured binding energy and temperature dependent lifetime broadening., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We present high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy studies on the Kondo resonance of the strongly-correlated Ce system CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. Exploiting the thermal broadening of the Fermi edge we analyze position, spectral weight, and temperature dependence of the low-energy 4f spectral features, whose major weight lies above the Fermi level $E_F$. We also present theoretical predictions based on the single-impurity Anderson model using an extended non-crossing approximation (NCA), including all spin-orbit and crystal field splittings of the 4f states. The excellent agreement between theory and experiment provides strong evidence that the spectral properties of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ can be described by single-impurity Kondo physics down to $T \approx 5$ K., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
