Thirty-eight eyes of 24 who underwent primary trabeculotomy with a pseudo 360-degree technique between June 1, 1992 and December 31, 2005 were studied.Results: Mean age at the time of trabeculotomy was 11.1 ± 3.0 months, with seven eyes operated on after 1 year of age. Mean follow-up was 85.1 ± 9.0 months. Mean intraocular pressure (IOP) at the time of glaucoma diagnosis was 32.7 ± 1.1 mmHg, and final mean IOP for all eyes (after trabeculotomy and any additional surgery and/or glaucoma medications) was 17.9 ± 0.8 mmHg. With trabeculotomy and medication alone, mean final IOP was 19.9 ± 1.1 mmHg, with a mean drop in IOP of 12.5 ± 1.4 mmHg. Surgical success, defined by adequate IOP control, was achieved in 30 eyes (78.96%) at most recent follow-up. Kaplan–Meier analysis demonstrated 5- and 10-year survival probabilities of 93.1% and 66.8%, respectively. Seventeen eyes (44.7% of all eyes) achieved complete success, meaning IOP control

Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. Abstract

We used acoustic pressure waves to control the bubble formation from a submerged sub-millimeter orifice. The method enables the controlled periodic formation of bubbles with a high degree of reproducibility. Therefore, we were able to generate a continuous stream of fine bubbles as small as the orifice itself. This has a high demand in many industrial applications and fundamental research at the time. Using high-speed videometry, we studied the mechanism of the bubble formation and detachment along with the effect of various parameters on the bubble size. The analysis of forces acting on a growing bubble revealed the decisive effect of the liquid inertia on the bubble detachment. Moreover, based on the experimental results, we derived new detachment criteria for the bubble departure. These criteria can be used as the boundary condition for modeling the temporal evolution of the bubble size as well as calculating the final bubble volume using the Rayleigh-Plesset equation.

Abstract

Biogas is an important driver in carbon-neutral energy sources. Many biogas digester setups, however, are not well optimized and waste energy or fail to maximize their gas output potential. To optimize these systems, a framework was developed to measure and predict digester systems’ efficiencies by closely monitoring fluid movements. This framework includes a numerical calculation of fluid behavior (Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)), and Deep Learning to estimate the fluid shear-rates introduced by the agitator’s action. Additionally, a novel measurement system is presented that can measure the same metrics, as simulated, in real-world environments. Lastly, an outlook is given that presents the options and extensions of the presented setup to reduce prediction error, minimize measuring efforts further, and recommend optimization approaches to the operator.

Abstract

We studied the bubble formation at micro-scale orifices in the range from 0.03 mm to 0.193 mm under the constant gas flow conditions. Furthermore, we investigated the evolution of individual forces applied on the bubble surface during its formation. We observed a different mechanism of the bubble formation compared with millimeter range orifices. This mechanism is highly influenced by the capillary pressure and gas kinetic energy. The latter results in a sequence of coalescence events of the bubbles in the vicinity above the orifice, even at significantly low gas flow rates. Studying the individual forces acting on the bubble revealed that the mechanism of bubble formation at micro-orifices is highly dependent on the gas momentum force and the liquid inertia force. Accordingly, we propose a new mechanistic model that precisely predicts the bubble size generated at micro-orifices. In addition to the influential forces, the model includes the influence of both the bubble base expansion and the relative bulk liquid velocity. Experimental validation of the model confirms that the maximum relative error of the model is less than 10%.

Abstract

The previous investigations showed that the pulsed aeration leads to higher oxygen mass transfer rates in specific cases. In narrow aeration columns positive effects could be shown for higher pulsation frequencies whereas in the DN900 column these effects were only pre-sent for higher flow rates in low frequencies. Investigations of bubble size distributions showed that the bubble size is not the only factor leading to increased oxygen mass transfer rates and that the positive effects depend on the geometry and the liquid flow behavior in the reactor. Further experiments therefore are focused on fundamental investigation the liquid flow behavior during pulsed aeration. A new experimental setup was constructed to study these hydrodynamic effects in 2D to enable a better understand of the underlying effects.

Abstract

Future energy systems must mainly generate electricity from renewable resources. To deal with the fluctuating availability of wind and solar power, new versatile electricity markets and sustainable solutions concentrating on energy flexibility are needed. In this research, we investigated the potential of energy flexibility achieved through demand-side response for the wastewater treat- ment plant of the Benchmark Simulation Model 1. First, seven control strategies were simulated and assessed. Next, the flexibility calls were identified, two energy flexibility scenarios were defined and incorporated into the model, and the control strategies were evaluated anew. In this research, the effluent ammonia concentration needed to be maintained within the limits for as long as possible. Strategy 5, which controlled ammonia in Tank 5 at a low value and did not control any nitrate in Tank 2, of Scenario 1, which was characterized by an undetermined on/off aeration cycle, was then found to be the best. Although this control strategy led to high total energy consumption, the percentage of time during which aeration was nearly suspended was one of the highest. This work proposes a methodology that will be useful to plant operators who should soon reduce energy consumption during spikes in electricity prices.

In entwickelten Ländern ist die Abwasseraufbereitung für etwa 1 % des gesamten elektrischen Energieverbrauchs verantwortlich, wobei die biologische Behandlung in Belebungsbecken bis zu 80 % des gesamten Energieverbrauchs ausmacht. Zudem wird für die nahe Zukunft ein Anstieg des Energieverbrauchs im Wassersektor um 80 % prognostiziert. Ein wesentlicher Faktor dabei ist die Verwendung energieintensiver Druckbelüftungssysteme, um den für die biologische Aktivität notwendigen Sauerstoff bereitzustellen. Wissenschaftler des Helmholtz-Innovationslabors CLEWATER arbeiten daran, die Effizienz des Belüftungsprozesses deutlich zu steigern. In diesem Artikel werden die aktuellen Fortschritte bei zwei von CLEWATEC vorgeschlagenen Ansätzen zur effizienten Belüftung vorgestellt.

Abstract

A concept for 3D-motion tracking of instrumented flow-following sensor particles, equipped with a gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer and pressure sensor, has been developed. Consisting of an error state Kalman filter (ESKF) the algorithm can track the attitude of the sensor particle in relation to a reference coordinate system. In this short paper we investigated if the estimated attitude returns to the reference trajectory after experiencing motion similar to a motion that is expected to be found in the multidisperse fluid flows of a biogas fermenter or a waste water treatment basin. Results show the feasibility of the proposed method. However, the strategy of the measurement update in the ESKF needs improvement.

Abstract

We provide an experimental investigation on the mechanism of the bubble formation from sub-millimeter orifices under variable gas flow conditions VGFC. The effect of influential parameters including the volumetric gas flow rate Q, the orifice diameter dor, and the volume of the gas reservoir Vc upstream of the orifice are investigated in detail. We found that, by enlarging Vc, q increases. This affects various aspects of bubble formation dynamics such as the bubble base expansion, the apparent contact angle at the three-phase contact point, and the bubble detachment criterion. The effect of Vc is best presented by its dimensionless group, the capacitance number Nc. The minimum Nc from which the influence of the gas reservoir becomes important depends on the orifice size. Moreover, a significant increase in Vc leads to a change in the bubbling regime towards multiple bubble formation.

In dem Projekt „NeoBio“ wurde dazu eine Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) entwickelt.

Abstract

Zur räumlichen Vermessung von Prozessparametern und zur Strömungscharakterisierung in großen Behältern, wie z.B. Biogasfermentern und Belebtschlammbecken wurde am HZDR das Konzept strömungsfolgender Sensoren entwickelt. Alle derzeit verfügbaren oder in Entwicklung befindlichen instrumentierten Strömungsfolger nutzen zur Strömungsanalyse lediglich vertikale Positionsprofile, gemessen über den hydrostatischen Druck. Für eine weitere Analyse und Optimierung von Prozessen in großen Behältern soll deshalb der sog. Sensorpartikel aus derart weiterentwickelt werden, dass eine dreidimensionale Rekonstruktion der Trajektorie des Sensorpartikels im Behälter durchgeführt werden kann. Dazu wurde das System um eine inertiale Messeinheit und ein auf Ultrabreitbandfunktechnologie (Ultra-Wide-Band, UWB) basierendes Lokalisierungssystem erweitert. Im Beitrag wird das Sensorsystem vorgestellt und daran anschließend die Problematik der Bewegungsverfolgung mit limitierter Sensorik eingeführt, sowie die Bewegungsverfolgung basierend auf inertialer Sensorik und UWB-Lokalisierung präsentiert. Abschließend wird der gesamte Ablauf beispielhaft für ausgewählte Szenarien gezeigt.

Abstract

A concept for 3D-motion tracking of instrumented flow-following sensor particles, equipped with a gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer and pressure sensor, has been developed. Consisting of an error state Kalman filter (ESKF) the algorithm can track the attitude of the sensor particle in relation to a reference coordinate system permanently, even under high acceleration, which interferes the attitude estimation because it is based on measuring the gravitational acceleration. Experimental results show, that using the ESKF for attitude estimation is giving accurate results even under high body acceleration.

46. The use of pure oxygen for aeration in aerobic wastewater treatment: a review of its potential and limitations

Abstract

In aerobic wastewater treatment, aeration is the most critical element of the treatment system. It supplies microorganisms with the required amount of dissolved oxygen, maintains solids in suspension and controls membrane fouling, where needed. However, conventional activated sludge, where air is used, is limited to low-strength wastewaters as higher loadings or more intense feeds require both higher biomass and dissolved oxygen concentrations. In membrane bioreactors, despite being able to operate at higher biomass concentrations, their operation at high biomass concentrations and high organic loadings has not been tested. By replacing air with pure oxygen, oxygen transfer rates increase at lower flowrates. In this work, the potential and limitations of pure oxygen systems over conventional ones are reviewed. Also, the effect of the operational parameters or the mixed liquor characteristics on oxygen transfer is determined. Pure oxygen affects bacterial structure, controls foam formation, improves bacterial enzymatic activity and, in membrane bioreactors, leads to a better recovery of permeability after cleanings. It treats much higher loadings without compromising final effluent quality. Fine bubbles are more efficient in oxygen transfer due to their increased contact area. Nevertheless, pure oxygen aeration at times is not essential or it may generate effluent organic matter of a higher refractory character. We then recommend that it be used to applications where conventional aeration is not adequate.

Abstract

Fine gas dispersion into a liquid is requested in a number of industrial applications. One way to achieve fine gas dispersion is to downsize the openings from which gas bubbles are generated. Accordingly, we have investigated the dynamics of bubble formation from submerged orifices ranging from 0.04 to 0.8 mm at a comprehensive range of gas flow rates for a system of air and deionized water. In this range of orifice size, we observe a different mechanism of bubble formation compared with millimeter-range orifices. We discuss the observations on the basis of temporal change of the bubble shape, bubble base expansion, and detachment criteria. At submillimeter orifices, the mechanism of bubble formation is highly influenced by the capillary pressure and the gas kinetic energy. The latter results in congregation of small bubbles in the vicinity of the orifice, even at very small gas flow rates. Moreover, we studied the evolution of individual forces applied to the surface of bubbles during their formation. We have found that the formation of bubbles at submillimeter orifices cannot be described with a quasi-static force balance. Finally, we present a bubbling regime map using relevant dimensionless numbers.
