To achieve state-of-the-art jet energy resolution for Particle Flow, sophisticated energy clustering algorithms must be developed that can fully exploit available information to separate energy deposits from charged and neutral particles. Three published neural network-based shower separation models were applied to simulation and experimental data to measure the performance of the highly granular CALICE Analogue Hadronic Calorimeter (AHCAL) technological prototype in distinguishing the energy deposited by a single charged and single neutral hadron for Particle Flow. The performance of models trained using only standard spatial and energy and charged track position information from an event was compared to models trained using timing information available from AHCAL, which is expected to improve sensitivity to shower development and, therefore, aid in clustering. Both simulation and experimental data were used to train and test the models and their performances were compared. The best-performing neural network achieved significantly superior event reconstruction when timing information was utilised in training for the case where the charged hadron had more energy than the neutral one, motivating temporally sensitive calorimeters. All models under test were observed to tend to allocate energy deposited by the more energetic of the two showers to the less energetic one. Similar shower reconstruction performance was observed for a model trained on simulation and applied to data and a model trained and applied to data.

We present $\texttt{cunusht}$, a general-purpose Python package that wraps a highly efficient CUDA implementation of the nonuniform spin-$0$ spherical harmonic transform. The method is applicable to arbitrary pixelization schemes, including schemes constructed from equally-spaced iso-latitude rings as well as completely nonuniform ones. The algorithm has an asymptotic scaling of $\mathrm{O}{(\ell_{\rm max}^3)}$ for maximum multipole $\ell_{\rm max}$ and achieves machine precision accuracy. While $\texttt{cunusht}$ is developed for applications in cosmology in mind, it is applicable to various other interpolation problems on the sphere. We outperform the fastest available CPU algorithm by a factor of up to 5 for problems with a nonuniform pixelization and $\ell_{\rm max}>4\cdot10^3$ when comparing a single modern GPU to a modern 32-core CPU. This performance is achieved by utilizing the double Fourier sphere method in combination with the nonuniform fast Fourier transform and by avoiding transfers between the host and device. For scenarios without GPU availability, $\texttt{cunusht}$ wraps existing CPU libraries. $\texttt{cunusht}$ is publicly available and includes tests, documentation, and demonstrations.

A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. The HGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse and longitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors and scintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are a combination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, and steel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method is based on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamic reduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm is able to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinder the reconstruction of hadronic showers using classical reconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in the multiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower's constituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using test beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCAL accompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. Weak gravitational lensing is a powerful tool for precision tests of cosmology. As the expected deflection angles are small, predictions based on non-linear N-body simulations are commonly computed with the Born approximation. Here we examine this assumption using ${\small DORIAN}$, a newly developed full-sky ray-tracing scheme applied to high-resolution mass-shell outputs of the two largest simulations in the MillenniumTNG suite, each with a 3000 Mpc box containing almost 1.1 trillion cold dark matter particles in addition to 16.7 billion particles representing massive neutrinos. We examine simple two-point statistics like the angular power spectrum of the convergence field, as well as statistics sensitive to higher order correlations such as peak and minimum statistics, void statistics, and Minkowski functionals of the convergence maps. Overall, we find only small differences between the Born approximation and a full ray-tracing treatment. While these are negligibly small at power-spectrum level, some higher order statistics show more sizable effects; ray-tracing is necessary to achieve percent level precision. At the resolution reached here, full-sky maps with 0.8 billion pixels and an angular resolution of 0.43 arcmin, we find that interpolation accuracy can introduce appreciable errors in ray-tracing results. We therefore implemented an interpolation method based on nonuniform fast Fourier transforms (NUFFT) along with more traditional methods. Bilinear interpolation introduces significant smoothing, while nearest grid point sampling agrees well with NUFFT, at least for our fiducial source redshift, $z_s=1.0$, and for the 1 arcmin smoothing we use for higher-order statistics., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Digital technologies have positively transformed society, but they have also led to undesirable consequences not anticipated at the time of design or development. We posit that insights into past undesirable consequences can help researchers and practitioners gain awareness and anticipate potential adverse effects. To test this assumption, we introduce BLIP, a system that extracts real-world undesirable consequences of technology from online articles, summarizes and categorizes them, and presents them in an interactive, web-based interface. In two user studies with 15 researchers in various computer science disciplines, we found that BLIP substantially increased the number and diversity of undesirable consequences they could list in comparison to relying on prior knowledge or searching online. This paper presents the development of a deep-atmosphere, nonhydrostatic dynamical core (DyCore) targeted towards ground-thermosphere atmospheric prediction. This DyCore is based on a novel formulation of the specific internal energy equation (SIEE), which, unlike standard potential temperature formulations, is valid for variable composition atmospheres. Two versions of a SIEE are derived from basic principles. The first version, which uses a product-rule (PR) continuity equation, contains an additional compressible term and does not conserve mass. The second version, which does not use the product-rule (No-PR) in the continuity equation, contains two compressible terms and conserves mass to machine precision regardless of time truncation error. The pressure gradient and gravitational forces in the momentum balance equation are formulated in a manner appropriate for HA applications and the spectral element method (SEM) is used with Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) and Horizontally Explicit Vertically Implicit (HEVI) time-integration. These new equation sets were implemented in two U. S. Navy atmospheric models: the Nonhydrostatic Unified Model of the Atmosphere (NUMA) and the Navy Environmental Prediction sysTem Using a Nonhydrostatic Core (NEPTUNE). Numerical results using a nonhydrostatic and hydrostatic baroclinic instability, a balanced zonal flow, and HA mountain wave experiments are shown. These results are compared to existing deep-atmosphere dynamical cores, indicating that the proposed discretized IEE equation sets are viable next-generation ground-to-thermosphere DyCores.

The integration of large language models (LLMs) into various global cultures fundamentally presents a challenge: LLMs must navigate interactions, respect social norms, and avoid transgressing cultural boundaries. However, it is still unclear if LLMs can adapt their outputs to diverse cultural norms. Our study focuses on this aspect. We introduce NormAd, a novel dataset, which includes 2.6k stories that represent social and cultural norms from 75 countries, to assess the ability of LLMs to adapt to different granular levels of socio-cultural contexts such as the country of origin, its associated cultural values, and prevalent social norms. Our study reveals that LLMs struggle with cultural reasoning across all contextual granularities, showing stronger adaptability to English-centric cultures over those from the Global South. Even with explicit social norms, the top-performing model, Mistral-7b-Instruct, achieves only 81.8% accuracy, lagging behind the 95.6% achieved by humans. Evaluation on NormAd further reveals that LLMs struggle to adapt to stories involving gift-giving across cultures. Due to inherent agreement or sycophancy biases, LLMs find it considerably easier to assess the social acceptability of stories that adhere to norms than those that deviate. Our benchmark measures the cultural adaptability (or lack thereof) of LLMs, emphasizing the potential to make these technologies more equitable and useful for global audiences. JAX is widely used in machine learning and scientific computing, the latter of which often relies on existing high-performance code that we would ideally like to incorporate into JAX. Reimplementing the existing code in JAX is often impractical and the existing interface in JAX for binding custom code either limits the user to a single Jacobian product or requires deep knowledge of JAX and its C++ backend for general Jacobian products. With JAXbind we drastically reduce the effort required to bind custom functions implemented in other programming languages with full support for Jacobian-vector products and vector-Jacobian products to JAX. Specifically, JAXbind provides an easy-to-use Python interface for defining custom, so-called JAX primitives. Via JAXbind, any function callable from Python can be exposed as a JAX primitive. Though images are ubiquitous across Wikipedia, it is not obvious that the image choices optimally support learning. When well selected, images can enhance learning by dual coding, complementing, or supporting articles. When chosen poorly, images can mislead, distract, and confuse. We developed a large dataset containing 470 questions & answers to 94 Wikipedia articles with images on a wide range of topics. Through an online experiment (n=704), we determined whether the images displayed alongside the text of the article are effective in helping readers understand and learn. For certain tasks, such as learning to identify targets visually (e.g., "which of these pictures is a gujia?"), article images significantly improve accuracy. Images did not significantly improve general knowledge questions (e.g., "where are gujia from?"). Most interestingly, only some images helped with visual knowledge questions (e.g., "what shape is a gujia?"). A neural network for software compensation was developed for the highly granular CALICE Analogue Hadronic Calorimeter (AHCAL). The neural network uses spatial and temporal event information from the AHCAL and energy information, which is expected to improve sensitivity to shower development and the neutron fraction of the hadron shower. The neural network method produced a depth-dependent energy weighting and a time-dependent threshold for enhancing energy deposits consistent with the timescale of evaporation neutrons. Additionally, it was observed to learn an energy-weighting indicative of longitudinal leakage correction. In addition, the method produced a linear detector response and outperformed a published control method regarding resolution for every particle energy studied.

Language models (LMs) show promise as tools for communicating science to the general public by simplifying and summarizing complex language. Because models can be prompted to generate text for a specific audience (e.g., college-educated adults), LMs might be used to create multiple versions of plain language summaries for people with different familiarities of scientific topics. However, it is not clear what the benefits and pitfalls of adaptive plain language are. When is simplifying necessary, what are the costs in doing so, and do these costs differ for readers with different background knowledge? Through three within-subjects studies in which we surface summaries for different envisioned audiences to participants of different backgrounds, we found that while simpler text led to the best reading experience for readers with little to no familiarity in a topic, high familiarity readers tended to ignore certain details in overly plain summaries (e.g., study limitations). Our work provides methods and guidance on ways of adapting plain language summaries beyond the single "general" audience.

We present optimal Bayesian field-level cosmological constraints from nonlinear tracers of the large-scale structure, specifically the amplitude $\sigma_8$ of linear matter fluctuations inferred from rest-frame simulated dark matter halos in a comoving volume of $8\,(h^{-1}\mathrm{Gpc})^3$. Our constraint on $\sigma_8$ is entirely due to nonlinear information, and obtained by explicitly sampling the initial conditions along with bias and noise parameters via a Lagrangian EFT-based forward model, LEFTfield. The comparison with a simulation-based inference analysis employing the power spectrum and bispectrum -- likewise using the LEFTfield forward model -- shows that, when including precisely the same modes of the same data up to $k_{\mathrm{max}}= 0.10\,h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ ($0.12\,h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$), the field-level approach yields a factor of 3.5 (5.2) improvement on the $\sigma_8$ constraint, from 20.0% to 5.7% (17.0% to 3.3%). A common approach to deal with gate errors in modern quantum-computing hardware is zero-noise extrapolation. By artificially amplifying errors and extrapolating the expectation values obtained with different error strengths towards the zero-error (zero-noise) limit, the technique aims at rectifying errors in noisy quantum computing systems. For an accurate extrapolation, it is essential to know the exact factors of the noise amplification. In this article, we propose a simple method for estimating the strength of errors occurring in a quantum circuit and demonstrate improved extrapolation results. The method determines the error strength for a circuit by appending to it the inverted circuit and measuring the probability of the initial state. The estimation of error strengths is easy to implement for arbitrary circuits and does not require a previous characterisation of noise properties. We compare this method with the conventional zero-noise extrapolation method and show that the novel method leads to a more accurate calculation of expectation values. Constructing a universal moral code for artificial intelligence (AI) is difficult or even impossible, given that different human cultures have different definitions of morality and different societal norms. We therefore argue that the value system of an AI should be culturally attuned: just as a child raised in a particular culture learns the specific values and norms of that culture, we propose that an AI agent operating in a particular human community should acquire that community's moral, ethical, and cultural codes. How AI systems might acquire such codes from human observation and interaction has remained an open question. Here, we propose using inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) as a method for AI agents to acquire a culturally-attuned value system implicitly. We test our approach using an experimental paradigm in which AI agents use IRL to learn different reward functions, which govern the agents' moral values, by observing the behavior of different cultural groups in an online virtual world requiring real-time decision making. We show that an AI agent learning from the average behavior of a particular cultural group can acquire altruistic characteristics reflective of that group's behavior, and this learned value system can generalize to new scenarios requiring altruistic judgments. Our results provide, to our knowledge, the first demonstration that AI agents could potentially be endowed with the ability to continually learn their values and norms from observing and interacting with humans, thereby becoming attuned to the culture they are operating in.

Recent advancements in evaluating matrix-exponential functions have opened the doors to the practical use of exponential time-integration methods in numerical weather prediction (NWP). The success of exponential methods in shallow water simulations has led to the question of whether they can be beneficial in a 3D atmospheric model. In this paper, we take the first step forward by evaluating the behavior of exponential time-integration methods in the Navy's compressible deep-atmosphere nonhydrostatic global model (NEPTUNE-Navy Environmental Prediction sysTem Utilizing a Nonhydrostatic Engine). Simulations are conducted on a set of idealized test cases designed to assess key features of a nonhydrostatic model and demonstrate that exponential integrators capture the desired large and small-scale traits, yielding results comparable to those found in the literature. We propose a new upper boundary absorbing layer independent of reference state and shown to be effective in both idealized and real-data simulations. A real-data forecast using an exponential method with full physics is presented, providing a positive outlook for using exponential integrators for NWP.

From smart sensors that infringe on our privacy to neural nets that portray realistic imposter deepfakes, our society increasingly bears the burden of negative, if unintended, consequences of computing innovations. As the experts in the technology we create, Computer Science (CS) researchers must do better at anticipating and addressing these undesirable consequences proactively. Our prior work showed that many of us recognize the value of thinking preemptively about the perils our research can pose, yet we tend to address them only in hindsight. Design biases in NLP systems, such as performance differences for different populations, often stem from their creator's positionality, i.e., views and lived experiences shaped by identity and background. Despite the prevalence and risks of design biases, they are hard to quantify because researcher, system, and dataset positionality is often unobserved. We introduce NLPositionality, a framework for characterizing design biases and quantifying the positionality of NLP datasets and models. Our framework continuously collects annotations from a diverse pool of volunteer participants on LabintheWild, and statistically quantifies alignment with dataset labels and model predictions. We apply NLPositionality to existing datasets and models for two tasks -- social acceptability and hate speech detection. To date, we have collected 16,299 annotations in over a year for 600 instances from 1,096 annotators across 87 countries. We find that datasets and models align predominantly with Western, White, college-educated, and younger populations. Additionally, certain groups, such as non-binary people and non-native English speakers, are further marginalized by datasets and models as they rank least in alignment across all tasks. Finally, we draw from prior literature to discuss how researchers can examine their own positionality and that of their datasets and models, opening the door for more inclusive NLP systems., Comment: ACL 2023

Is it possible to evaluate the moral cognition of complex artificial agents? In this work, we take a look at one aspect of morality: `doing the right thing for the right reasons.' We propose a behavior-based analysis of artificial moral cognition which could also be applied to humans to facilitate like-for-like comparison. Morally-motivated behavior should persist despite mounting cost; by measuring an agent's sensitivity to this cost, we gain deeper insight into underlying motivations. We apply this evaluation to a particular set of deep reinforcement learning agents, trained by memory-based meta-reinforcement learning. Our results indicate that agents trained with a reward function that includes other-regarding preferences perform helping behavior in a way that is less sensitive to increasing cost than agents trained with more self-interested preferences., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Context: Radio interferometers measure frequency components of the sky brightness, modulated by the gains of the individual radio antennas. Due to atmospheric turbulence and variations in the operational conditions of the antennas these gains fluctuate. Thereby the gains do not only depend on time but also on the spatial direction on the sky. To recover high quality radio maps an accurate reconstruction of the direction and time-dependent individual antenna gains is required. Aims: This paper aims to improve the reconstruction of radio images, by introducing a novel joint imaging and calibration algorithm including direction-dependent antenna gains. Methods: Building on the \texttt{resolve} framework, we designed a Bayesian imaging and calibration algorithm utilizing the image domain gridding method for numerically efficient application of direction-dependent antenna gains. Furthermore by approximating the posterior probability distribution with variational inference, our algorithm can provide reliable uncertainty maps. Results: We demonstrate the ability of the algorithm to recover high resolution high dynamic range radio maps from VLA data of the radio galaxy Cygnus A. We compare the quality of the recovered images with previous work relying on classically calibrated data. Furthermore we compare with a compressed sensing algorithm also incorporating direction-dependent gains. Conclusions: Including direction-dependent effects in the calibration model significantly improves the dynamic range of the reconstructed images compared to reconstructions from classically calibrated data. Compared to the compressed sensing reconstruction, the resulting sky images have a higher resolution and show fewer artifacts. Deep cosmic microwave background polarization experiments allow a very precise internal reconstruction of the gravitational lensing signal in pricinple. For this aim, likelihood-based or Bayesian methods are typically necessary, where very large numbers of lensing and delensing remappings on the sphere are sometimes required before satisfactory convergence. We discuss here an optimized piece of numerical code in some detail that is able to efficiently perform both the lensing operation and its adjoint (closely related to delensing) to arbitrary accuracy, using nonuniform fast Fourier transform technology. Where applicable, we find that the code outperforms current widespread software by a very wide margin. It is able to produce high-resolution maps that are accurate enough for next-generation cosmic microwave background experiments on the timescale of seconds on a modern laptop. The adjoint operation performs similarly well and removes the need for the computation of inverse deflection fields. Our society has been increasingly witnessing a number of negative, unintended consequences of digital technologies. While post-hoc policy regulation is crucial in addressing these issues, reasonably anticipating the consequences before deploying technology can help mitigate potential harm to society in the first place. Yet, the quest to anticipate potential harms can be difficult without seeing digital technologies deployed in the real world. In this position paper, we argue that anticipating unintended consequences of technology can be facilitated through creativity-enhancing interventions, such as by building on existing knowledge and insights from diverse stakeholders.
