Abstract. An nnΛ is a neutral baryon system with no charge. The study of the pure Λ-neutron system such as nnΛ gives us information on the Λn interaction. The nnΛ search experiment (E12-17-003) was performed at JLab Hall A in 2018. In this article, the Λn FSI was investigated by a shape analysis of the 3H(e, e′K+)X missing mass spectrum, and a preliminary result for the Λn FSI study is given.

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

International audience; We report high-precision measurements of the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) cross section at high values of the Bjorken variable xB. DVCS is sensitive to the generalized parton distributions of the nucleon, which provide a three-dimensional description of its internal constituents. Using the exact analytic expression of the DVCS cross section for all possible polarization states of the initial and final electron and nucleon, and final state photon, we present the first experimental extraction of all four helicity-conserving Compton form factors (CFFs) of the nucleon as a function of xB, while systematically including helicity flip amplitudes. In particular, the high accuracy of the present data demonstrates sensitivity to some very poorly known CFFs.

We present new precision measurements of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section for momentum transfer (Q$^2$) up to 15.75~\gevsq. Combined with existing data, these provide an improved extraction of the proton magnetic form factor at high Q$^2$ and double the range over which a longitudinal/transverse separation of the cross section can be performed. The difference between our results and polarization data agrees with that observed at lower Q$^2$ and attributed to hard two-photon exchange (TPE) effects, extending to 8~(GeV/c)$^2$ the range of Q$^2$ for which a discrepancy is established at $>$95\% confidence. We use the discrepancy to quantify the size of TPE contributions needed to explain the cross section at high Q$^2$., 7 pages, 2 figures

The proton is one of the main building blocks of all visible matter in the universe. Among its intrinsic properties are its electric charge, mass, and spin. These emerge from the complex dynamics of its fundamental constituents, quarks and gluons, described by the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Using electron scattering its electric charge and spin, shared among the quark constituents, have been the topic of active investigation until today. An example is the novel precision measurement of the proton's electric charge radius. In contrast, little is known about the proton's inner mass density, dominated by the energy carried by the gluons, which are hard to access through electron scattering since gluons carry no electromagnetic charge. In the present work we chose to probe this gluonic gravitational density using a small color dipole, the $J/\psi$ particle, through its threshold photoproduction. From our data we determined, for the first time, the proton's gluonic gravitational form factors, which encode its mass density. We used a variety of methods and determined in all cases a mass radius that is notably smaller than the electric charge radius. In some cases, the determined radius is in excellent agreement with first-principle predictions from lattice QCD. This work paves the way for a deeper understanding of the salient role of gluons in providing gravitational mass to visible matter.

[PHYS.NUCL]Physics [physics]/Nuclear Theory [nucl-th] - Abstract
International audience; Experimental cross sections for the He4(e,e′p)X reactions in the missing energy range from 0.017 to 0.022 GeV and up to a missing momentum of 0.632 GeV/c at xB=1.24 and Q2=2 (GeV/c)2 are reported. The data are compared to relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations for the He4(e,e′p)H3 channel. Significantly more events are observed for pm≥0.45 GeV/c than are predicted by the theoretical model, and striking fluctuations in the ratio of data to the theoretical model around pm=0.3GeV/c are possible signals of initial-state multinucleon correlations.

- Abstract
We report the first measurement of the (e,e′p) reaction cross-section ratios for Helium-3 (He3), Tritium (H3), and Deuterium (d). The measurement covered a missing momentum range of 40≤pmiss≤550MeV/c, at large momentum transfer (〈Q2〉≈1.9 (GeV/c)$^{2}$) and xB>1, which minimized contributions from non quasi-elastic (QE) reaction mechanisms. The data is compared with plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) calculations using realistic spectral functions and momentum distributions. The measured and PWIA-calculated cross-section ratios for He3/d and H3/d extend to just above the typical nucleon Fermi-momentum (kF≈250 MeV/c) and differ from each other by ∼20%, while for He3/H3 they agree within the measurement accuracy of about 3%. At momenta above kF, the measured He3/H3 ratios differ from the calculation by 20%−50%. Final state interaction (FSI) calculations using the generalized Eikonal Approximation indicate that FSI should change the He3/H3 cross-section ratio for this measurement by less than 5%. If these calculations are correct, then the differences at large missing momenta between the He3/H3 experimental and calculated ratios could be due to the underlying NN interaction, and thus could provide new constraints on the previously loosely-constrained short-distance parts of the NN interaction.

The earlier search at HERMES for narrow baryon states excited in quasireal photoproduction, decaying through the channel pKS0→pπ+π-, has been extended with improved decay-particle reconstruction, more advanced particle identification, and increased event samples. The structure observed earlier at an invariant mass of 1528 MeV shifts to 1522 MeV and the statistical significance drops to about 2σ for data taken with a deuterium target. The number of events above background is 68-31+98(stat)±13(sys). No such structure is observed in the hydrogen data set.

Azimuthal asymmetries in exclusive electroproduction of real photons are measured for the first time with respect to transverse target polarisation, providing new constraints on Generalized Parton Distributions. From the same data set on a hydrogen target, new results for the beam-charge asymmetry are also extracted with better precision than those previously reported. By comparing model calculations with measured asymmetries attributed to the interference between the deeply virtual Compton scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes, a model-dependent constraint is obtained on the total angular momenta carried by up and down quarks in the nucleon.

An experiment measuring electroproduction of hypernuclei has been performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab on a $^{12}$C target. In order to increase counting rates and provide unambiguous kaon identification two superconducting septum magnets and a Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) were added to the Hall A standard equipment. An unprecedented energy resolution of less than 700 keV FWHM has been achieved. Thus, the observed \lam{12}{B} spectrum shows for the first time identifiable strength in the core-excited region between the ground-state {\it s}-wave $\Lambda$ peak and the 11 MeV {\it p}-wave $\Lambda$ peak., Comment: Paper submitted to Physical Review Letters

Evidence for a narrow baryon state is found in quasi-real photoproduction on a deuterium target through the decay channel pK(S)(0) → ppi(+)pi(-). A peak is observed in the pK(S)(0) invariant mass spectrum at 1528 +/- 2.6(stat) +/- 2.1(syst) MeV. Depending on the background model, the naive statistical significance of the peak is 4-6 standard deviations and its width may be somewhat larger than the experimental resolution of sigma = 4.3-6.2 MeV. This state may be interpreted as the predicted S = +1 exotic Theta(+)(uudd (s) over bar) pentaquark baryon. No signal for an hypothetical Theta(++) baryon was observed in the pK(+) invariant mass distribution. The absence of such a signal indicates that an isotensor Theta is excluded and an isovector Theta is unlikely.

- Abstract
Single-spin asymmetries were investigated in inclusive electroproduction of charged pions and kaons from transversely polarized protons at the HERMES experiment. The asymmetries were studied as a function of the azimuthal angle psi about the beam direction between the target-spin direction and the hadron production plane, the transverse hadron momentum P-T relative to the direction of the incident beam, and the Feynman variable x(F). The sin psi* amplitudes are positive for pi(+) and K+ slightly negative for pi(-) and consistent with zero for K-, with particular P-T but weak x(F) dependences. Especially large asymmetries are observed for two small subsamples of events, where also the scattered electron was recorded by the spectrometer. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. The influence of the nuclear medium on lepto-production of hadrons was studied in the HERMES experiment at DESY in semi- inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of 27.6 GeV positrons off deuterium, nitrogen and krypton targets. The differential multiplicity for krypton relative to that of deuterium has been measured for the first time for various identified hadrons (pi(+), pi(-), pi(0), K+, K-, p and (p) over bar) as a function of the virtual photon energy v, the fraction z of this energy transferred to the hadron, and the hadron transverse momentum squared p(t)(2). The multiplicity ratio is strongly reduced in the nuclear medium at low v and high z, with significant differences among the various hadrons. The distribution of the hadron transverse momentum is broadened towards high p(t)(2) in the nuclear medium, in a manner resembling the Cronin effect previously observed in collisions of heavy ions and protons with nuclei.

The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule connects the anomalous contribution to the magnetic moment of the target nucleus with an energy-weighted integral of the difference of the helicity- dependent photoabsorption cross sections. Originally conceived for real photons, the GDH integral can be generalised to the case of photons with virtuality Q(2). For spin-1/2 targets such as the nucleon, it then represents the non-perturbative limit of the first moment Gamma(1) of the spin structure function g(1)(x,Q(2)) in deep inelastic scattering (DIS). The data collected by HERMES with a deuterium target are presented together with a re-analysis of previous measurements on the proton. This provides an unprecedented and complete measurement of the generalised GDH integral for photon-virtuality ranging over 1.2 lt Q(2) lt 12.0 GeV2 and for photon-nucleon invariant mass squared W-2 ranging over I lt W2 lt 45 GeV2. thus covering simultaneously the nucleon-resonance and the deep inelastic scattering regions. These data allow the study of the Q(2)- dependence of the full GDH integral, which is sensitive to both the Q(2)-evolution of the resonance form factors and contributions of higher twist. The contribution of the nucleon- resonance region is seen to decrease rapidly with increasing Q(2). The DIS contribution is sizeable over the full measured range, even down to the lowest measured Q(2). As expected, at higher Q(2) the data are found to be in agreement with previous measurements of the first moment of g(1). From data on the deuteron and proton, the GDH integral for the neutron has been derived and the proton-neutron difference evaluated. This difference is found to satisfy the fundamental Bjorken sum rule at Q(2) = 5 GeV2.

Single-spin asymmetries have been measured for semi-inclusive electroproduction of $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, $\pi^0$ and $K^+$ mesons in deep-inelastic scattering off a longitudinally polarised deuterium target. The asymmetries appear in the distribution of the hadrons in the azimuthal angle $\phi$ around the virtual photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. The corresponding analysing powers in the $\sin \phi$ moment of the cross section are $0.012 \pm 0.002 {(stat.)} \pm 0.002 {(syst.)}$ for $\pi^+$, $0.006 \pm 0.003 {(stat.)} \pm 0.002 {(syst.)}$ for $\pi^-$, $0.021 \pm 0.005 {(stat.)} \pm 0.003 {(syst.)}$ for $\pi^0$ and $0.013 \pm 0.006 {(stat.)} \pm 0.003 {(syst.)}$ for $K^+$. The $\sin 2\phi$ moments are compatible with zero for all particles., Comment: Revised version shortened 9 pages, 3 tables, 7 figures

- Abstract
The charged pion form factor, Fπ(Q2), is an important quantity that can be used to advance our knowledge of hadronic structure. However, the extraction of Fπ from data requires a model of the 1H(e,e'π+)n reaction and thus is inherently model dependent. Therefore, a detailed description of the extraction of the charged pion form factor from electroproduction data obtained recently at Jefferson Lab is presented, with particular focus given to the dominant uncertainties in this procedure. Results for Fπ are presented for Q2=0.60-2.45 GeV2. Above Q2=1.5 GeV2, the Fπ values are systematically below the monopole parametrization that describes the low Q2 data used to determine the pion charge radius. The pion form factor can be calculated in a wide variety of theoretical approaches, and the experimental results are compared to a number of calculations. This comparison is helpful in understanding the role of soft versus hard contributions to hadronic structure in the intermediate Q2 regime.

A study has been performed of the reaction $\pptofourk$ using in-flight antiprotons from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/$c$ incident momentum interacting with a hydrogen jet target. The reaction is dominated by the production of a pair of $\phi$ mesons. The $\bar p p \to \phi \phi$ cross section rises sharply above threshold and then falls continuously as a function of increasing antiproton momentum. The overall magnitude of the cross section exceeds expectations from a simple application of the OZI rule by two orders of magnitude. In a fine scan around the $\xi/f_J(2230)$ resonance, no structure is observed. A limit is set for the double branching ratio B($\pbarp\rightarrow\ xi)\times\rm{B}(\xi\rightarrow\phi\phi) \lt 6 \times 10^{-5}$ for a spin 2 resonance of M = 2.235 GeV and $\Gamma$ = 15 MeV. A study has been performed of the reaction pbar p -> 4K using in-flight antiprotons from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/c incident momentum interacting with a hydrogen jet target. The pbar p -> Ks Ks -> 4pi+/- cross section was measured at incident antiproton momenta between 0.6 and 1.9 GeV/c using the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). This investigation was part of a systematic study of in-flight antiproton-proton annihilations into two-neutral-meson final states in a search for hadronic resonances. A coarse scan of the pbar p -> Ks Ks cross section as a function of center-of-mass energy between 1.964 and 2.395 GeV/c^2 and a fine scan of the region surrounding the Xi(2220) are presented. Upper limits on the product branching ratio BR(Xi -> pbar p)BR(Xi -> Ks Ks) are determined for a wide range of mass and width assumptions based on the non-observation of the Xi(2220). A rise in the pbar p -> Ks Ks cross section is observed near 2.15 GeV/c^2, which is consistent with the f2(2150) resonance. The reaction pbar p -> pbar p pi+ pi- has been studied with high statistics at CERN-LEAR with incident pbar momenta from 1.65 to 2.0 GeV/c by the JETSET (PS202) experiment. The aim of this paper is to search for narrow resonances decaying to pbar p. No evidence for such structures is found. In particular, an upper limit for the production of a 2.02 GeV state with a width of Gamma = 20 MeV, having been seen in other hadroproduction experiments, is established. Our results restrict the cross section for such a peak to be below 200 nb at the 95% confidence level. - Abstract
The differential cross sections for the γn→π-p and the γp→π+n processes were measured at Jefferson Lab. The photon energies ranged from 1.1 to 5.5 GeV, corresponding to center-of-mass energies from 1.7 to 3.4 GeV. The pion center-of-mass angles varied from 50° to 110°. The π- and π+ photoproduction data both exhibit a global scaling behavior at high energies and high transverse momenta, consistent with the constituent counting rule prediction and the existing π+ data. The data suggest possible substructure of the scaling behavior, which might be oscillations around the scaling value. The data show an enhancement in the scaled cross section at center-of-mass energy near 2.2 GeV. The differential cross section ratios [dσ/dt(γn→π-p)/dσ/dt(γp→π+n)] at high energies and high transverse momenta can be described by calculations based on one-hard-gluon-exchange diagrams.

- Abstract
We have measured the differential cross section for the γn→π-p and γp→π+n reactions at θc.m.=90° in the photon energy range from 1.1 to 5.5 GeV at Jefferson Lab (JLab). The data at Eγ≳3.3 GeV exhibit a global scaling behavior for both π- and π+ photoproduction, consistent with the constituent counting rule and the existing π+ photoproduction data. Possible oscillations around the scaling value are suggested by these new data. The data show enhancement in the scaled cross section at a center-of-mass energy near 2.2 GeV. The cross section ratio of exclusive π- to π+ photoproduction at high energy is consistent with the prediction based on one-hard-gluon-exchange diagrams.

- Abstract
We have measured the nuclear transparency of the fundamental process γn⃗π-p in 4He. These measurements were performed at Jefferson Lab in the photon energy range of 1.6–4.5 GeV and at θcmπ=70° and 90°. These measurements are the first of their kind in the study of nuclear transparency in photoreactions. They also provide a benchmark test of Glauber calculations based on traditional models of nuclear physics. The transparency results suggest deviations from the traditional nuclear physics picture. The momentum transfer dependence of the measured nuclear transparency is consistent with Glauber calculations that include the quantum chromodynamics phenomenon of color transparency.
