5. Limits of Convex Projective Surfaces and Finsler Metrics

Abstract

We show that for certain sequences escaping to infinity in the $\operatorname{SL}_3\mathbb{R}$ Hitchin component, growth rates of trace functions are described by natural Finsler metrics. More specifically, as the Labourie-Loftin cubic differential gets big, logarithms of trace functions are approximated by lengths in a Finsler metric which has triangular unit balls and is defined directly in terms of the cubic differential. This is equivalent to a conjecture of Loftin from 2006 which has recently been proven by Loftin, Tamburelli, and Wolf, though phrasing the result in terms of Finsler metrics is new and leads to stronger results with simpler proofs. From our perspective, the result is a corollary of a more local theorem which may have other applications. The key ingredient of the proof is another asymmetric Finsler metric, defined on any convex projective surface, recently defined by Danciger and Stecker, in which lengths of loops are logarithms of eigenvalues. We imitate work of Nie to show that, as the cubic differential gets big, Danciger and Stecker's metric converges to our Finsler metric with triangular unit balls. While Loftin, Tamburelli, and Wolf address cubic differential rays, our methods also address sequences of representations which are asymptotic to cubic differential rays, giving us more insight into natural compactifications of the moduli space of convex projective surfaces., Comment: (20 pages, 11 figures)

Abstract

We study (generalized) discrete symmetries of 2d semisimple TQFTs. These are 2d TQFTs whose fusion rules can be diagonalized. We show that, in this special basis, the 0-form symmetries always act as permutations while 1-form symmetries act by phases. This leads to an explicit description of the gauging of these symmetries. One application of our results is a generalization of the equivariant Verlinde formula to the case of general Lie groups. The generalized formula leads to many predictions for the geometry of Hitchin moduli spaces, which we explicitly check in several cases with low genus and SO(3) gauge group., Comment: 39 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

As the scale of biological data generation has increased, the bottleneck of research has shifted from data generation to analysis. Researchers commonly need to build computational workflows that include multiple analytic tools and require incremental development as experimental insights demand tool and parameter modifications. These workflows can produce hundreds to thousands of intermediate files and results that must be integrated for biological insight. Data-centric workflow systems that internally manage computational resources, software, and conditional execution of analysis steps are reshaping the landscape of biological data analysis and empowering researchers to conduct reproducible analyses at scale. Adoption of these tools can facilitate and expedite robust data analysis, but knowledge of these techniques is still lacking. Here, we provide a series of strategies for leveraging workflow systems with structured project, data, and resource management to streamline large-scale biological analysis. We present these practices in the context of high-throughput sequencing data analysis, but the principles are broadly applicable to biologists working beyond this field.

Abstract

Fantasy sport has rapidly developed into a multi-billion dollar industry in recent years, with daily fantasy sport (DFS) responsible for $18.9 billion in annual fantasy sport consumption revenue (Fantasy Sports Trade Association, 2017). Efforts to examine the drivers of DFS-specific participation remain scarce, with scholars having reported on the motives of traditional fantasy sport (TFS) consumers and hybrid consumers (i.e., those who consume both TFS and DFS) (Billings, Ruihley, & Yang, 2016; Ruihley, Billings, & Rae, 2014). The authors conducted three studies to develop the Daily Fantasy Sport Motives Scale (DFSMS). Development of the DFSMS allows for a more thorough investigation into the motives and underlying drivers of DFS participation. Specifically, the authors discuss the unique nature of the DFSMS, provide suggestions for marketers and academics, and outline future research opportunities. These challenges lay in broadly familiar domains: self- and group-consciousness; common man and his place in a future society in which mental activity dominates; work and leisure; knowledge and values accruing from it, both for self and others; possibilities in education; civilization, with its ?Dark Age? phenomena and its dreams of progress; the role of the past in contemporary life; and power, both in society and within the sovereign individual who, though bound by physical and intellectual limits, functions as a seeker after the freedom and self-fulfillment which are so wholly integral to the human condition.
