Symmetry control is essential for realizing unconventional properties, such as ferroelectricity, nonlinear optical responses, and complex topological order, thus it holds promise for the design of emerging quantum and photonic systems. Nevertheless, fast and reversible control of symmetry in materials remains a challenge, especially for nanoscale systems. Here, we unveil reversible symmetry changes in colloidal lead chalcogenide quantum dots on picosecond timescales. Using a combination of ultrafast electron diffraction and total X-ray scattering, in conjunction with atomic-scale structural modeling and first-principles calculations, we reveal that symmetry-broken lead sulfide quantum dots restore to a centrosymmetric phase upon photoexcitation. The symmetry restoration is driven by photoexcited electronic carriers, which suppress lead off-centering for about 100 ps. Furthermore, the change in symmetry is closely correlated with the electronic properties as shown by transient optical measurements. Overall, this study elucidates reversible symmetry changes in colloidal quantum dots, and more broadly defines a new methodology to optically control symmetry in nanoscale systems on ultrafast timescales., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Light-matter interaction at the nanoscale in magnetic alloys and heterostructures is a topic of intense research in view of potential applications in high-density magnetic recording. While the element-specific dynamics of electron spins is directly accessible to resonant x-ray pulses with femtosecond time structure, the possible element-specific atomic motion remains largely unexplored. We use ultrafast electron diffraction to probe the temporal evolution of lattice Bragg peaks of FePt nanoparticles embedded in a carbon matrix following excitation by an optical femtosecond laser pulse. The diffraction interference between Fe and Pt sublattices enables us to demonstrate that the Fe mean-square vibration amplitudes are significantly larger that those of Pt as expected from their different atomic mass. Both are found to increase as energy is transferred from the laser-excited electrons to the lattice. Contrary to this intuitive behavior, we observe a laser-induced lattice expansion that is larger for Pt than for Fe atoms during the first picosecond after laser excitation. This effect points to the strain-wave driven lattice expansion with the longitudinal acoustic Pt motion dominating that of Fe., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Understanding the interplay between charge, nematic, and structural ordering tendencies in cuprate superconductors is critical to unraveling their complex phase diagram. Using pump-probe time-resolved resonant x-ray scattering on the (0 0 1) Bragg peak at the Cu $L_3$ and O $K$ resonances, we investigate non-equilibrium dynamics of $Q_a = Q_b = 0$ nematic order and its association with both charge density wave (CDW) order and lattice dynamics in La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. The orbital selectivity of the resonant x-ray scattering cross-section allows nematicity dynamics associated with the planar O 2$p$ and Cu 3$d$ states to be distinguished from the response of anisotropic lattice distortions. A direct time-domain comparison of CDW translational-symmetry breaking and nematic rotational-symmetry breaking reveals that these broken symmetries remain closely linked in the photoexcited state, consistent with the stability of CDW topological defects in the investigated pump fluence regime., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Magnetism in topological materials creates phases exhibiting quantized transport phenomena with applications in spintronics and quantum information. The emergence of such phases relies on strong interaction between localized spins and itinerant states comprising the topological bands, and the subsequent formation of an exchange gap. However, this interaction has never been measured in any intrinsic magnetic topological material. Using a multimodal approach, this exchange interaction is measured in MnBi2Te4, the first realized intrinsic magnetic topological insulator. Interrogating nonequilibrium spin dynamics, itinerant bands are found to exhibit a strong exchange coupling to localized Mn spins. Momentum-resolved ultrafast electron scattering and magneto-optic measurements reveal that itinerant spins disorder via electron-phonon scattering at picosecond timescales. Localized Mn spins, probed by resonant X-ray scattering, disorder concurrently with itinerant spins, despite being energetically decoupled from the initial excitation. Modeling the results using atomistic simulations, the exchange coupling between localized and itinerant spins is estimated to be >100 times larger than superexchange interactions. This implies an exchange gap of >25 meV should occur in the topological surface states. By directly quantifying local-itinerant exchange coupling, this work validates the materials-by-design strategy of utilizing localized magnetic order to create and manipulate magnetic topological phases, from static to ultrafast timescales.

Symmetry is a powerful concept in physics, but its applicability to far-from-equilibrium states is still being understood. Recent attention has focused on how far-from-equilibrium states lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking. Conversely, ultrafast optical pumping can be used to drastically change the energy landscape and quench the magnetic order parameter in magnetic systems. Here, we find a distinct symmetry-dependent ultrafast behaviour by use of ultrafast x-ray scattering from magnetic patterns with varying degrees of isotropic and anisotropic symmetry. After pumping with an optical laser, the scattered intensity reveals a radial shift exclusive to the isotropic component and exhibits a faster recovery time from quenching for the anisotropic component. These features arise even when both symmetry components are concurrently measured, suggesting a correspondence between the excitation and the magnetic order symmetry. Our results underline the importance of symmetry as a critical variable to manipulate the magnetic order in the ultrafast regime.

We use transient absorption spectroscopy with circularly polarized x-rays to detect laser-excited hole states below the Fermi level and compare their dynamics with that of unoccupied states above the Fermi level in ferromagnetic [Co/Pd] multilayers. While below the Fermi level an instantaneous and significantly stronger demagnetization is observed, above the Fermi level the demagnetization is delayed by 35+/-10 fs. This provides a direct visualization of how ultrafast demagnetization proceeds via initial spin-flip scattering of laser-excited holes to the subsequent formation of spin waves., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Engineering novel states of matter with light is at the forefront of materials research. An intensely studied direction is to realize broken-symmetry phases that are "hidden" under equilibrium conditions but can be unleashed by an ultrashort laser pulse. Despite a plethora of experimental discoveries, the nature of these orders and how they transiently appear remain unclear. To this end, we investigate a nonequilibrium charge density wave (CDW) in rare-earth tritellurides, which is suppressed in equilibrium but emerges after photoexcitation. Using a pump-pump-probe protocol implemented in ultrafast electron diffraction, we demonstrate that the light-induced CDW consists solely of order parameter fluctuations, which bear striking similarities to critical fluctuations in equilibrium despite differences in the length scale. By calculating the dynamics of CDW fluctuations in a nonperturbative model, we further show that the strength of the light-induced order is governed by the amplitude of equilibrium fluctuations. These findings highlight photoinduced fluctuations as an important ingredient for the emergence of transient orders out of equilibrium. Our results further suggest that materials with strong fluctuations in equilibrium are promising platforms to host "hidden" orders after laser excitation.

The emergence of magnetism in quantum materials creates a platform to realize spin-based applications in spintronics, magnetic memory, and quantum information science. A key to unlocking new functionalities in these materials is the discovery of tunable coupling between spins and other microscopic degrees of freedom. We present evidence for interlayer magnetophononic coupling in the layered magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. Employing magneto-Raman spectroscopy, we observe anomalies in phonon scattering intensities across magnetic field-driven phase transitions, despite the absence of discernible static structural changes. This behavior is a consequence of a magnetophononic wave-mixing process that allows for the excitation of zone-boundary phonons that are otherwise 'forbidden' by momentum conservation. Our microscopic model based on density functional theory calculations reveals that this phenomenon can be attributed to phonons modulating the interlayer exchange coupling. Moreover, signatures of magnetophononic coupling are also observed in the time domain through the ultrafast excitation and detection of coherent phonons across magnetic transitions. In light of the intimate connection between magnetism and topology in MnBi2Te4, the magnetophononic coupling represents an important step towards coherent on-demand manipulation of magnetic topological phases.

Nonradiative processes limit optoelectronic functionality of nanocrystals and curb their device performance. Nevertheless, the dynamic structural origins of nonradiative relaxations in nanocrystals are not understood. Here, femtosecond electron diffraction measurements corroborated by atomistic simulations uncover transient lattice deformations accompanying radiationless electronic processes in semiconductor nanocrystals. Investigation of the excitation energy dependence shows that hot carriers created by a photon energy considerably larger than the bandgap induce structural distortions at nanocrystal surfaces on few picosecond timescales associated with the localization of trapped holes. On the other hand, carriers created by a photon energy close to the bandgap result in transient lattice heating that occurs on a much longer 200 ps timescale, governed by an Auger heating mechanism. Elucidation of the structural deformations associated with the surface trapping of hot holes provides atomic-scale insights into the mechanisms deteriorating optoelectronic performance and a pathway towards minimizing these losses in nanocrystal devices., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Ultrafast optical pumping of spatially nonuniform magnetic textures is known to induce far-from-equilibrium spin transport effects. Here, we use ultrafast x-ray diffraction with unprecedented dynamic range to study the laser-induced dynamics of labyrinth domain networks in ferromagnetic CoFe/Ni multilayers. We detected azimuthally isotropic, odd order, magnetic diffraction rings up to 5th order. The amplitudes of all three diffraction rings quench to different degrees within 1.6 ps. In addition, all three of the detected diffraction rings both broaden by 15% and radially contract by 6% during the quench process. We are able to rigorously quantify a 31% ultrafast broadening of the domain walls via Fourier analysis of the order-dependent quenching of the three detected diffraction rings. The broadening of the diffraction rings is interpreted as a reduction in the domain coherence length, but the shift in the ring radius, while unambiguous in its occurrence, remains unexplained. In particular, we demonstrate that a radial shift explained by domain wall broadening can be ruled out. With the unprecedented dynamic range of our data, our results provide convincing evidence that labyrinth domain structures are spatially perturbed at ultrafast speeds under far-from-equilibrium conditions, albeit the mechanism inducing the perturbations remains yet to be clarified.

We use femtosecond resonant soft x-ray scattering to measure the ultrafast optical melting of charge-order correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$. By analyzing both the energy-resolved and energy-integrated order parameter dynamics, we find evidence of a short-lived nonequilibrium state, whose features are compatible with a sliding charge density wave coherently set in motion by the pump. This transient state exhibits shifts in both the quasielastic line energy and its wave vector, as expected from a classical Doppler effect. The wave vector change is indeed found to directly follow the pump propagation direction. These results demonstrate the existence of sliding charge order behavior in an unconventional charge density wave system and underscore the power of ultrafast optical excitation as a tool to coherently manipulate electronic condensates., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 39 references

Phase transitions driven by ultrashort laser pulses have attracted interest both for understanding the fundamental physics of phase transitions and for potential new data storage or device applications. In many cases these transitions involve transient states that are different from those seen in equilibrium. To understand the microscopic properties of these states, it is useful to develop elementally selective probing techniques that operate in the time domain. Here we show fs-time-resolved measurements of V Ledge Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) from the insulating phase of the Mott- Hubbard material V2O3 after ultrafast laser excitation. The probed orbital excitations within the d-shell of the V ion show a sub-ps time response, which evolve at later times to a state that appears electronically indistinguishable from the high-temperature metallic state. Our results demonstrate the potential for RIXS spectroscopy to study the ultrafast orbital dynamics in strongly correlated materials., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Time-resolved coherent X-ray diffraction is used to measure the spatially resolved magnetization structure within FePt nanoparticles during laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization. The momentum-dependent X-ray magnetic diffraction shows that demagnetization proceeds at different rates at different X-ray momentum transfer. We show that the observed momentum-dependent scattering has the signature of inhomogeneous demagnetization within the nanoparticles, with the demagnetization proceeding more rapidly at the boundary of the nanoparticle. A shell region of reduced magnetization forms and moves inwards at a supermagnonic velocity. Spin-transport calculations show that the shell formation is driven by superdiffusive spin flux mainly leaving the nanoparticle into the surrounding carbon. Quantifying this non-local contribution to the demagnetization allows us to separate it from the local demagnetization., Comment: 6 pages

Charge order is universal among high-T$_c$ cuprates but its relevance to superconductivity is not established. It is widely believed that, while static order competes with superconductivity, dynamic order may be favorable and even contribute to Cooper pairing. We use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering to study the collective dynamics of the charge order in the prototypical cuprate, La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$. We find that, at energy scales $0.4$ meV $ \lesssim \omega \lesssim 2$ meV, the excitations are overdamped and propagate via Brownian-like diffusion. At energy scales below 0.4 meV the charge order exhibits dynamic critical scaling, displaying universal behavior arising from propagation of topological defects. Light-matter interaction at the nanoscale in magnetic materials is a topic of intense research in view of potential applications in next-generation high-density magnetic recording. Laser-assisted switching provides a pathway for overcoming the material constraints of high-anisotropy and high-packing density media, though much about the dynamics of the switching process remains unexplored. We use ultrafast small-angle x-ray scattering at an x-ray free-electron laser to probe the magnetic switching dynamics of FePt nanoparticles embedded in a carbon matrix following excitation by an optical femtosecond laser pulse. We observe that the combination of laser excitation and applied static magnetic field, one order of magnitude smaller than the coercive field, can overcome the magnetic anisotropy barrier between "up" and "down" magnetization, enabling magnetization switching. This magnetic switching is found to be inhomogeneous throughout the material, with some individual FePt nanoparticles neither switching nor demagnetizing. The origin of this behavior is identified as the near-field modification of the incident laser radiation around FePt nanoparticles. The fraction of not-switching nanoparticles is influenced by the heat flow between FePt and a heat-sink layer.

All-optical switching (AOS) of magnetic domains by femtosecond laser pulses was first observed in the transition metal-rare earth (TM-RE) alloy GdFeCo1-5; this phenomenon demonstrated the potential for optical control of magnetism for the development of ever faster future magnetic recording technologies. The technological potential of AOS has recently increased due to the discovery of the same effect in other materials, including RE-free magnetic multilayers6,7. However, to be technologically meaningful, AOS must compete with the bit densities of conventional storage devices, restricting optically-switched magnetic areas to sizes well below the diffraction limit. Here, we demonstrate reproducible and robust all-optical switching of magnetic domains of 53 nm size in a ferrimagnetic TbFeCo alloy using gold plasmonic antenna structures. The confined nanoscale magnetic reversal is imaged around and beneath plasmonic antennas using x-ray resonant holographic imaging.
