The first measurements of anisotropic flow coefficients v(n) for mid-rapidity charged particles in Xe-Xe collisions at root s(NN)=5.44TeV are presented. Comparing these measurements to those from Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV, v(2) is found to be suppressed for mid-central collisions at the same centrality, and enhanced for central collisions. The values of v(3) are generally larger in Xe-Xe than in Pb-Pb at a given centrality. These observations are consistent with expectations from hydrodynamic predictions. When both v(2) and v(3) are divided by their corresponding eccentricities for a variety of initial state models, they generally scale with transverse density when comparing Xe-Xe and Pb-Pb, with some deviations observed in central Xe-Xe and Pb-Pb collisions. These results assist in placing strong constraints on both the initial state geometry and medium response for relativistic heavy-ion collisions. (c) 2018 European Organization for Nuclear Research. First results on the longitudinal asymmetry and its effect on the pseudorapidity distributions in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider are obtained with the ALICE detector. The longitudinal asymmetry arises because of an unequal number of participating nucleons from the two colliding nuclei, and is estimated for each event by measuring the energy in the forward neutron-Zero-Degree-Calorimeters (ZNs). The effect of the longitudinal asymmetry is measured on the pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles in the regions vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.9, 2.8 < eta < 5.1 and -3.7 < eta < -1.7 by taking the ratio of the pseudorapidity distributions from events corresponding to different regions of asymmetry. The coefficients of a polynomial fit to the ratio characterise the effect of the asymmetry. A Monte Carlo simulation using a Glauber model for the colliding nuclei is tuned to reproduce the spectrum in the ZNs and provides a relation between the measurable longitudinal asymmetry and the shift in the rapidity (y(0)) of the participant zone formed by the unequal number of participating nucleons. The dependence of the coefficient of the linear term in the polynomial expansion, c(1), on the mean value of y(0) is investigated. (C) 2018 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

A low energy electron diffraction (LEED) I/V analysis was performed of the (4×4) oxygen structure on Ag(111). Two data sets were used, one recorded with a conventional LEED system and a second with a low energy electron microscope (LEEM). The data sets agree well with each other, demonstrating that I/V structure analyses can be performed with the same quality with LEEM as with conventional LEED. The structure obtained confirms the recently proposed model that involves a reconstruction of the Ag(111) surface. Previous models based on a thin layer of Ag2O that had been accepted for more than 30 years are disproved. The reconstruction model contains two units of six triangularly arranged Ag atoms and a stacking fault in one half of the unit cell. The six O atoms per unit cell occupy sites in the trenches between the Ag6 triangles. Small lateral displacements of the Ag atoms lift the mirror symmetry of the structure, leading to two nonequivalent groups of O atoms. The atoms of both groups are located approximately 0.5 Å below the top Ag layer, on fourfold positions with respect to the top layer Ag atoms. Ag–O distances between 2.05 and 2.3 Å are found. The oxygen atoms exhibit large static or dynamic displacements of up to 0.3 Å at 300 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ion etching under well-defined conditions represents a very powerful tool to fabricate tips in a controlled and reproducible manner for Scanning Probe Microscopy which possess clean, relatively smooth, and oxide-free surfaces. The possibilities and limitations of ion etching are demonstrated thoroughly for tungsten, which is of particular interest for scanning tunneling microscopy. Iterative computer simulations and experimental studies are provided. The simulation of the etching process at the atomic level is based on the Monte Carlo program (Transport of Ions in Matter), which provides reliable values for the key input parameters such as the sputtering yield Y(θ,E[sub ion]) and the mean ion range in the material for ion energies between 1 and 6 keV. The simulation program starts with a large tip radius as a crude form and asymptotically approaches a “final form” of a very sharp tip in the course of ion etching. Our experimental results with argon ions in the energy range up to 6 keV and crude electrochemically etched polycrystalline tungsten wire agreed very reasonably with the simulated results. For example, the minimum tip radius obtained experimentally amounts to approximately 5 nm. This value corresponds closely to the ion range, which obviously sets a limit to the smallest achievable tip radius by the effect of transmission sputtering. By variation of the angle between the ion beam and the macroscopic tip, the tip angle can be controlled in the range between 12° and 35°. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pseudorapidity (eta) and transverse-momentum (p(T)) distributions of charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions are measured at the centre-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV. The pseudorapidity distribution in vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.8 is reported for inelastic events and for events with at least one charged particle in vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1. The pseudorapidity density of charged particles produced in the pseudorapidity region vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.5 is 5.31 +/- 0.18 and 6.46 +/- 0.19 for the two event classes, respectively. The transverse-momentum distribution of charged particles is measured in the range 0.15 < p(T) < 20 GeV/c and vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.8 for events with at least one charged particle in vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1. The evolution of the transverse momentum spectra of charged particles is also investigated as a function of event multiplicity. We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 < p(T)(ch) (jet) < 90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions. - Abstract
We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Ion etching under well-defined conditions represents a very powerful tool to fabricate tips in a controlled and reproducible manner for scanning probe microscopy, which possess clean, relatively smooth, and oxide -free surfaces. The tip angle can be controlled in the range between 12 degree and 35 degree by variation of the angle between the ion beam and the macroscopic tip.

Background : M cells play an important role in the intestinal immune system as they have a high capacity for transcytosis of a wide range of microorganisms and macromolecules. However, little is known about the role of M cells during intestinal inflammation. Aim : We studied M cell development during indomethacin-induced intestinal inflammation in rats. Methods : Ileitis in rats was induced by two subcutaneous injections with indomethacin (7.5 mg/kg) given 24 h apart. Rats were sacrificed after 14 days and tissue was analysed by fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy. M cells could be visualized by using the FITC-labelled mAb anti-cytokeratin (CK)-8 (clone 4.1.18), which was recently identified as specific M cell marker in rats. The number of cytokeratin-8 positive M cells was related to the surface of the follicle associated epithelium. For morphological studies, we used both transmission electron microscopy (T.E.M.) and scanning electron microscopy (S.E.M.). Results : In non-inflamed ileum M cells were scarce.
