A novel eco-friendly high throughput continuous hydrothermal flow system was used to synthesise phase pure ZnO and doped ZnO in order to explore their properties for tissue engineering applications. Cerium, zirconium, and copper were introduced as dopants during flow synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles, Zirconium doped ZnO were successfully synthesised, however secondary phases of CeO and CuO were detected in X-ray diffraction (XRD). The nanoparticles were characterised using X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Dynamic Light scattering Measurements, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and RAMAN spectroscopy was used to evaluate physical, chemical, and structural properties. The change in BET surface area was also significant, the surface area increased from 11.35 (ZnO_2) to 26.18 (ZrZnO_5). However. In case of CeZnO_5 and CuZnO_5 was not significant 13.68 (CeZnO_5) and 12.16 (CuZnO_5) respectively. Cell metabolic activity analysis using osteoblast-like cells (MG63) and human embryonic derived mesenchymal stem cells (hES-MP) demonstrated that doped ZnO nanoparticles supported higher cell metabolic activity compared to cells grown in standard media with no nanoparticles added, or pure zinc oxide nanoparticles. The ZrZnO_5 demonstrated the highest cell metabolic activity and non-cytotoxicity over the duration of 28 days as compared to un doped or Ce or Cu incorporated nanoparticles. The current data suggests that Zirconium doping positively enhances the properties of ZnO nanoparticles by increasing the surface area and cell proliferation. Therefore, are potential additives within biomaterials or for tissue engineering applications.

Bone tissue engineering using osteoconductive scaffolds holds promise for regeneration, with pearl powder gaining interest for its bioactive qualities. This study used freeze drying to create chitosan (CS) scaffolds with pearl/calcium phosphate (p/CaP) powders, mimicking bone tissue structurally and compositionally. Characterization included scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mechanical testing. X-ray diffraction (XRD) Fourier-transform infrared–photoacoustic photo-acoustic sampling (FTIR−PAS), and FTIR- attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) were used to characterize p/CaP. In vitro tests covered degradation, cell activity, and SEM analysis. The scaffolds showed notable compressive strength and modulus enhancements with increasing p/CaP content. Porosity, ranging from 60% to 90%, decreased significantly at higher pearl/CaP ratios. Optimal cell proliferation and differentiation were observed with scaffolds containing up to 30 wt.% p/CaP, with 30 wt.% pearl powder and 30 wt.% p/CaP yielding the best results. In conclusion, pearl/calcium phosphate chitosan (p/CaP_CS) composite scaffolds emerged as promising biomaterials for bone tissue engineering, combining structural mimicry and favourable biological responses.

In the present study, the commercially available three different cotton, nylon and cotton/nylon fabrics were first modified by chitosan coating in the presence of a crosslinker triethyl orthoformate (TEOF) and then were loaded with silver nanoparticles. Resulted cotton‑silver (Ag-Cs-Cot), nylon‑silver (Ag-Cs-Nylon) and cotton-nylon silver (Ag-Cs-Cot-Nyl) fabrics showed extra-long anti-bacterial activity. In FTIR spectra the stretch of secondary amine near the 3375 cm indicated the silver attachment to the amine group of the chitosan and the peak at 1650 cm confirmed that TEOF bonded chitosan to fabrics. In SEM images smooth surfaces of fabrics without any damage by modification process were observed. The antibacterial activity showed 90 % bacterial inhibition against the E. coli and 89 % bacterial inhibition against S. aureus. The modified fabrics were washed with non-ionic detergent (10 g/l) and retained anti-bacterial activity till 50 washing cycles. Finally, the commercial potential of cotton‑silver fabric was evaluated by stitching it with the socks of football players and interestingly results showed that the modified fabric on the socks showed >90 % bacterial inhibition as compared to the plain fabric after 90 min playing activity. INTRODUCTION: In the UK alone, the incidence of cervical cancer is increasing, hence an urgent need for early and rapid detection of cancer before it develops. Spectroscopy in conjunction with machine learning offers a disruptive technology that promises to pick up cancer early as compared to the current diagnostic techniques used. AREAS COVERED: This review article explores the different spectroscopy techniques that have been used for the analysis of cervical cancer. Along with the extensive description of spectroscopic techniques, the various machine learning techniques are also described as well as the applications that have been explored in the diagnosis of cervical cancer. This review delimits the literature specifically associated with cervical cancer studies performed solely with the use of a spectroscopy technique, and machine learning. EXPERT OPINION: Although there are several methods and techniques to detect cervical cancer, the clinical sector requires to introduce new diagnostic technologies that help improve the quality of life of patients. These innovative technologies involve spectroscopy as a qualitative method and machine learning as a quantitative method. In this article, both the techniques and methodologies that allow and promise to be a new screening tool for the detection of cervical cancer are covered.

Poly (methylmethacrylate) is considered the basis material for a denture base. However, such substance has some drawbacks such as poor impact resistance, which is thought to be the primary cause of fracture of denture base resins. The purpose of the study was to determine how Nano and Micro hydroxyapatite particles affected the impact strength of acrylic resin. Thirty specimens were constructed of heat-cured acrylic resin and were divided into three groups: Ten specimens for the control, 10 for 1%nano hydroxyapatite, and 10 for micro hydroxyapatite. Acrylic samples were subjected to an impact strength test via a Charpy-type. Data were then analysed using SPSS v20. The ANOVA test was used for comparison among the groups. Highly statistically significant differences among all studied groups (P-value <0.0001). Both 5% Micro hydroxyapatite and 1% Nano hydroxyapatite had a higher mean value than the control. Incorporating Nano and Micro hydroxyapatite into PMMA improved the impact strength of acrylic resins.

The prolonged hypoxic conditions hinder chronic wounds from healing and lead to severe conditions such as delayed re-epithelialization and enhanced risk of infection. Multifunctional wound dressings are highly required to address the challenges of chronic wounds. Herein, we report polyurethane-coated sodium per carbonate-loaded chitosan hydrogel (CSPUO2) as a multifunctional dressing. The hydrogels (Control, CSPU, and CSPUO2) were prepared by freeze gelation method and the developed hydrogels showed high porosity, good absorption capacity, and adequate biodegradability. The release of oxygen from the CSPUO2 hydrogel was confirmed by the increase in pH and a sustained oxygen release was observed over the period of 21 days, due to polyurethane (CSPU) coating. The CSPUO2 hydrogel exhibited around 2-fold increased angiogenic potential in CAM assay when compared with Control and CSPU dressing. CSPUO2 also showed good level of antibacterial efficacy against E. coli and S. aureus. In a full-thickness rat wound model, CSPUO2 hydrogel considerably accelerated wound healing with exceptional re-epithelialization granulation tissue formation less inflammatory cells and improved skin architecture highlighting the tremendous therapeutic potential of this hydrogel when compared with control and CSPU to treat chronic diabetic and burn wounds.

In the maxillofacial area, specifically the orbital floor, injuries can cause bone deformities in the head and face that are difficult to repair or regenerate. Treatment methodologies include use of polymers, metal, ceramics on their own and in combinations mainly for repair purposes, but little attention has been paid to identify suitable materials for orbital floor regeneration. Polyurethane (PU) and hydroxyapatite (HA) micro- or nano- sized with different percentages (25%, 40% & 60%) were used to fabricate bioactive tissue engineering (TE) scaffolds using solvent casting and particulate leaching methods. Mechanical and physical characterisation of TE scaffolds was investigated by tensile tests and SEM respectively. Chemical and structural properties of PU and PU/HA scaffolds were evaluated by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and Surface properties of the bioactive scaffold were analysed using attenuated total reflectance (ATR) sampling accessory coupled with IR. Cell viability, collagen formed, VEGF protein amount and vascularisation of bioactive TE scaffold were studied. IR characterisation confirmed the integration of HA in composite scaffolds, while ATR confirmed the significant amount of HA present at the top surface of the scaffold, which was a primary objective. The SEM images confirmed the pores’ interconnectivity. Increasing the content of HA up to 40% led to an improvement in mechanical properties, and the incorporation of nano-HA was more promising than that of micro-HA. Cell viability assays (using MG63) confirmed biocompatibility and CAM assays confirmed vascularization, demonstrating that HA enhances vascularization. These properties make the resulting biomaterials very useful for orbital floor repair and regeneration.

Current triage for women with post-menopausal bleeding (PMB) to diagnose endometrial cancer rely on specialist referral for intimate tests to sequentially image, visualise and sample the endometrium. A point-of-care non-invasive triage tool with an instant readout could provide immediate reassurance for low-risk symptomatic women, whilst fast-tracking high-risk women for urgent intrauterine investigations. This study assessed the potential for infrared (IR) spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection (ATR) technology coupled with chemometric analysis of the resulting spectra for endometrial cancer detection in urine samples. Standardised urine collection and processing protocols were developed to ensure spectroscopic differences between cases and controls reflected cancer status. Urine spectroscopy distinguished endometrial cancer (n = 109) from benign gynaecological conditions (n = 110) with a sensitivity of 98% and specificity of 97%. If confirmed in subsequent low prevalence studies embedded in PMB clinics, this novel endometrial cancer detection tool could transform clinical practice by accurately selecting women with malignant pathology for urgent diagnostic work up whilst safely reassuring those without.

Raman spectroscopy can detect conformational changes in collagen structures and these findings are reviewed in this article. More specifically, some progressive diseases are mainly caused by alterations of collagen molecules but what is occurring at the biochemical level of this complex molecule usually remains unclear. While it may be true that a number of analytical techniques can analyze collagen, most of them have a series of limitations that limit their applicability to a wide range of samples. To understand in more detail the progression of a disease due to changes in the collagen structure, a technique that can detect subtle alterations at the biochemical level is needed. Raman spectroscopy is a label-free and noninvasive technique that can easily pick up on any conformational changes reflected primarily at the lipids, amides and proline and hydroxyproline regions. This review is the first compilation of studies of conformational changes in collagen molecules, providing help to understand changes in collagen biochemistry that can be of relevance to the human wound healing, ageing and pathologies.

Nanostructures underpin the excellent properties of silk. Although the bulk nanocomposition of silks is well studied, direct evidence of the spatial variation of nanocrystalline (ordered) and amorphous (disordered) structures remains elusive. Here, secondary electron hyperspectral imaging can be exploited for direct imaging of hierarchical structures in carbon‐based materials, which cannot be revealed by any other standard characterization methods. Through applying this technique to silks from domesticated (Bombyx mori) and wild (Antheraea mylitta) silkworms, a variety of previously unseen features are reported, highlighting the local interplay between ordered and disordered structures. This technique is able to differentiate composition on the nanoscale and enables in‐depth studies into the relationship between morphology and performance of these complex biopolymer systems.
