Abstract

Bulk magnetism in solids is fundamentally quantum mechanical in nature. Yet in many situations, including our everyday encounters with magnetic materials, quantum effects are masked, and it often suffices to think of magnetism in terms of the interaction between classical dipole moments. Whereas this intuition generally holds for ferromagnets, even as the size of the magnetic moment is reduced to that of a single electron spin (the quantum limit), it breaks down spectacularly for antiferromagnets, particularly in low dimensions. Considerable theoretical and experimental progress has been made in understanding quantum effects in one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets, but a complete experimental description of even simple two-dimensional antiferromagnets is lacking. Here we describe a comprehensive set of neutron scattering measurements that reveal a non-spin-wave continuum and strong quantum effects, suggesting entanglement of spins at short distances in the simplest of all two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets, the square lattice Heisenberg system. antiferromagnetism | entanglement | multimagnons | spin waves

Abstract

It has been possible to observe a magnetic resonance peak in the superconducting state in inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the copper oxide system Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. The magnetic excitation spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta and YBa2Cu3O7 show a clear similarity. In the superconducting state, the magnetic intensity is strongly focused around a single point in energy and wavevector. The intensity is too broad or too weak to be seen above background in the normal state.

Abstract

An unusual spin excitation mode observed by neutron scattering has inspired numerous theoretical studies of the interplay between charged quasiparticles and collective spin excitations in the copper oxide high-temperature superconductors. The mode has, thus far, only been observed in materials with crystal structures consisting of copper oxide bilayers, and it is absent in the single-layer compound [La.sub.2-x][Sr.sub.x]Cu[O.sub.4+δ]. Neutron-scattering data now show that the mode is present in [Tl.sub.2][Ba.sub.2]Cu[O.sub.6+δ], a single-layer compound with a superconducting transition temperature of ~90 kelvin, demonstrating that it is a generic feature of the copper oxide superconductors, independent of the layer sequence. This restricts the theoretical models for the origin of the resonant mode and its role in the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity., Electronic conduction in the copper oxide high-temperature superconductors takes place predominantly in structural units of chemical composition Cu[O.sub.2], in which copper and oxygen atoms form an approximately square planar arrangement. 43. The field-induced soliton phase of CuGeO3

Abstract

The quasi-1D S = 1/2 antiferromagnet CuGeO3 undergoes a spin-Peierls transition to a dimerised singlet quantum ground state, with S = 1 carrying pairs of domain walls as elementary excitations. Applying a large magnetic field, the domain walls-solitons-can be condensed into the ground state, forming a static incommensurate soliton lattice, which has been investigated by neutron scattering. The static soliton structure was found to be in good accordance to field theoretical and numerical calculations, while a low energy incommensurate mode is interpreted as a gapped phason. We anticipate that theoretical description of this and higher energy excitations will provide general insight to the effect of structural fluctuations on correlated electron systems.
