Abstract

Background: Since the inception of Counselling for Depression (CfD) in the UK as a competence‐based training course for experienced therapists, there has been remarkably little empirical work exploring the experiences and views of trainees and those involved in course delivery. Aims: This qualitative study aimed to explore trainees', trainers' and supervisors' experiences of CfD training and their perceptions and understanding of competence in the context of CfD training and assessment. Methods: Semi‐structured interviews were carried out with 19 participants recruited from two UK training courses and the BACP Practice Network. The interviews were analysed using Template Analysis. Findings: Two key themes are reported here: tensions in the CfD competence model and tensions in CfD methods of training and assessment. Participants reported challenges in adapting to the CfD model. They felt that its use drew them away from core values in their practice so that they felt their identity as a therapist was threatened. In particular, they questioned the possibility of integrating person‐centred and emotion‐focussed approaches and felt that the directivity of emotion‐focussed therapy was out of keeping with their core practice values. They also identified a number of difficulties with the CfD training and assessment; the training period was seen as an inadequate preparation for workplace practice, and the assessment process was criticised for being too narrow and was regarded as having little connection to the competence framework. Abstract

The Caribbean Animal Health Network (CaribVET) is a collaboration of veterinary services, diagnostic laboratories, research institutes, universities, and regional/international organizations to improve animal health in the Caribbean. New tools were used by the network to develop regional animal health activities: (1) A steering committee, a coordination unit, and working groups on specific diseases or activities were established. The working group on avian influenza used a collaborative Web site to develop a regionally harmonized avian influenza surveillance protocol and performance indicators. (2) A specific network was implemented on West Nile virus (WNV) to describe the WNV status of the Caribbean countries, to perform a technology transfer of WNV diagnostics, and to establish a surveillance system. (3) The CaribVET Web site (http://www.caribvet.net) encompasses information on surveillance systems, diagnostic laboratories, conferences, bibliography, and diseases of major concern in the region. It is a participatory Web site allowing registered users to add or edit information, pages, or data. An online notification system of sanitary information was set up for Guadeloupe to improve knowledge on animal diseases and facilitate early alert.

Abstract

A 2.91-billion base pair (bp) consensus sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome was generated by the whole-genome shotgun sequencing method. The 14.8-billion bp DNA sequence was generated over 9 months from 27,271,853 high-quality sequence reads (5.11-fold coverage of the genome) from both ends of plasmid clones made from the DNA of five individuals. Two assembly strategies—a whole-genome assembly and a regional chromosome assembly—were used, each combining sequence data from Celera and the publicly funded genome effort. The public data were shredded into 550-bp segments to create a 2.9-fold coverage of those genome regions that had been sequenced, without including biases inherent in the cloning and assembly procedure used by the publicly funded group. This brought the effective coverage in the assemblies to eightfold, reducing the number and size of gaps in the final assembly over what would be obtained with 5.11-fold coverage. The two assembly strategies yielded very similar results that largely agree with independent mapping data. The assemblies effectively cover the euchromatic regions of the human chromosomes. More than 90% of the genome is in scaffold assemblies of 100,000 bp or more, and 25% of the genome is in scaffolds of 10 million bp or larger. Analysis of the genome sequence revealed 26,588 protein-encoding transcripts for which there was strong corroborating evidence and an additional ∼12,000 computationally derived genes with mouse matches or other weak supporting evidence. Although gene-dense clusters are obvious, almost half the genes are dispersed in low G+C sequence separated by large tracts of apparently noncoding sequence. Only 1.1% of the genome is spanned by exons, whereas 24% is in introns, with 75% of the genome being intergenic DNA. Duplications of segmental blocks, ranging in size up to chromosomal lengths, are abundant throughout the genome and reveal a complex evolutionary history. Comparative genomic analysis indicates vertebrate expansions of genes associated with neuronal function, with tissue-specific developmental regulation, and with the hemostasis and immune systems. DNA sequence comparisons between the consensus sequence and publicly funded genome data provided locations of 2.1 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A random pair of human haploid genomes differed at a rate of 1 bp per 1250 on average, but there was marked heterogeneity in the level of polymorphism across the genome. Less than 1% of all SNPs resulted in variation in proteins, but the task of determining which SNPs have functional consequences remains an open challenge.

7. Lunar laser-ranging detection of light-speed anisotropy and gravitational waves

Abstract

The Apache Point Lunar Laser-ranging Operation (APOLLO), in New Mexico, can detect photon bounces from retro-reflectors on the moon surface to 0.1ns timing resolution. This facility enables not only the detection of light speed anisotropy, which defines a local preferred frame of reference — only in that frame is the speed of light isotropic — but also fluctuations/turbulence (gravitational waves) in the flow of the dynamical 3-space relative to local systems/observers. So the APOLLO facility can act as an effective “gravitational wave” detector. A recently published small data set from November 5, 2007 is analysed to characterise both the average anisotropy velocity and the wave/turbulence effects. The results are consistent with some 13 previous detections, with the last and most accurate being from the spacecraft earth-flyby Doppler-shift NASA data.

Abstract

The high degree of similarity between the mouse and human genomes is demonstrated through analysis of the sequence of mouse chromosome 16 (Mmu 16), which was obtained as part of a whole-genome shotgun assembly of the mouse genome. The mouse genome is about 10% smaller than the human genome, owing to a lower repetitive DNA content. Comparison of the structure and protein-coding potential of Mmu 16 with that of the homologous segments of the human genome identifies regions of conserved synteny with human chromosomes (Hsa) 3, 8, 12, 16, 21, and 22. Gene content and order are highly conserved between Mmu 16 and the syntenic blocks of the human genome. Of the 731 predicted genes on Mmu 16, 509 align with orthologs on the corresponding portions of the human genome, 44 are likely paralogous to these genes, and 164 genes have homologs elsewhere in the human genome; there are 14 genes for which we could find no human counterpart.

10. Absolute Motion and Quantum Gravity

Abstract

A new information-theoretic modelling of reality has given rise to a quantum-foam description of space, relative to which absolute motion is meaningful. In a previous paper it was shown that in this new physics Michelson interferometers show absolute motion effects when operated in dielectric mode, as indeed such experiments had indicated, and analysis of the experimental data showed that the measured speeds were all consistent with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) dipole-fit speed of 369 km/s. Here the new physics is applied to the Michelson-Morley 1887 interferometer rotation curve data to demonstrate that the interferometer data is in excellent agreement with the CMB direction (RA, Dec)=(11.20h,-7.22deg) as well. This data also reveals a velocity component caused by the in-flow of the quantum foam past the Earth towards the Sun at 30+\-15 km/s, while analysis of the Miller interferometer data of 1933 gives 49 km/s, compared to the theoretical value of 42 km/s. This observed in-flow is a signature of quantum gravity effects in the new physics.

Abstract

The thesis examines the internal Spatial structure of the central area using data on land use and property values. At the outset, the work is placed in the context of a strategy designed to study the symbiotic relationship between spatial structure, movement patterns and cognitive processes. It is argued that a prior requirement is to portray that structure which research on central areas seeks ultimately to explain. Following a review of previous studies, a suitable land use classification scheme is derived using the principles of logical division. The problem of areal classification (or regionalization) is reviewed and a solution is advanced which incorporates the location variable. Problems in the inclusion of valuation data in Spatial analysis are reviewed and solutions derived. Following this, strategies are advanced for the study of distributions in the vertical dimension. Data classification and management procedures are described and an overview of the study area and its regional setting is presented. The results of the analyses show that the study area has a high degree of spatial organization in the horizontal and vertical dimensions. Following a review of the general nature of the data employed, three taxonomies are derived and compared. These are groups of land uses characterized by the most similar land values, areal distributions and floor level locations. Group compositions are interpreted in terms of differing movement requirements. It is shown that the delineation of functional areas is an insufficient basis on its own to portray spatial structure since this needs to embrace different levels of abstraction and covariations of the type described in the previous paragraph.
