Successful operation of videoconferencing technology for interactive learning demands preparation and scheduling. Well-organized strategies for interaction assist faculty in meeting individual student needs and developing the "social presence" necessary to facilitate quality online learning. Organizations can be proactive by offering this innovative technology as a way to build relationships. In this article, the authors describe the transition of the Fort Hays State University (FHSU) educational administration program to a fully online program. It has been a valuable learning experience for faculty and students. The "evolution" of the program has been from traditional on campus face-to-face (F2F) instruction, to Interactive Television (ITV), to Blackboard (Bb), social networks such as Classroom 2.0, to videoconferencing programs, which provide instant one on one or small group chat and/or video communication. Data collection on student satisfaction is ongoing and the authors are growing in their willingness to take risks with new technologies that enhance teaching and learning. The use of videoconferencing to make the learning environment as transparent as possible can be a valuable "social presence" tool as educators seek to build and maintain quality relationships with students.

Curriculum consortia composed of small, rural school districts can overcome professional isolation, better meet state accreditation standards, improve decision making, better attract external funding, and strengthen sense of community through the development of professional relationships. Describes how consortia are organized and developed and offers a preliminary report on their effectiveness in Kansas and North Dakota. (TD)

Objective: Accurate staging of prostatic cancer is important for planning an optimal treatment, such as radical prostatectomy in clinical stage T2. About 40-50% of patients operated for cT2 disease show a pathological stage T3 disease. In a prospective study we analysed accuracy of TRUS and endocoil MRI in a group of patients before radical prostatectomy., Materials and Methods: 33 consecutive patients suspicious of prostate neoplasms were studied and staged with TRUS and endocoil MRI before prostatic biopsy and before radical prostatectomy. One urologist trained in TRUS conducted the exam, while one radiologist interpreted the MRI studies in a blind mode. The criteria evaluated were accuracy of global staging, extracapsular extension (ECE) and seminal vesicle invasion (SVI). These results were correlated with the histopathological findings after radical prostatectomy., Results: The histopathological results showed 14 patients (42%) with pT2 disease, 18 patients (54%) with pT3 disease and 1 case (4%) of pT4 disease. TRUS showed a low sensitivity (38%) and a good specificity (78%), with an overall accuracy of 50%; the best result was 96% specificity for SVI. Endocoil MRI showed a good sensitivity (70%) and specificity (76%), with an overall accuracy of 73%. Endocoilc was also useful to stage T1c disease when TRUS is negative. TRUS tends to understage, whereas endocoil MRI over-stages prostate cancer., Conclusions: TRUS and endocoil MRI may help in decision making about the appropriate treatment of prostatic cancer, even if they have limited current value, due to understaging or overstaging.

The diagnostic role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was investigated in the study of abdominal aortic aneurysms and compared with that of Computed Tomography (CT) and digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Magnetic Resonance angiography (MRA) was performed on 21 patients with radiologically proved abdominal aortic aneurysms, using a superconductive 1.5 T magnet (GE, Signa Advantage); the 2D TOF technique with gradient-echo sequences was used (SPGR: FA 45-60 degrees, TR/TE 33/7, ST 2 mm, 1 nex, 256 x 128 matrix, inferior presaturation and flow compensation). The images acquired on the axial plane were reconstructed according to MIP and rotated on the z-axis from +90 degrees to -90 degrees. In all cases SE 2D T1- and T2-weighted sequences were acquired on the axial plane. Twelve patients were examined with MRI, CT and DSA; 3 with MRI and CT; 2 with MRI and DSA and finally 4 with MRI only. The radiologic studies were then reviewed blind and the results of the different methods compared. In all cases MRI yielded similar information to CT and DSA as to aneurysm extent and size, vessel involvement, status of visceral, iliac and common femoral arteries and finally the conditions of perianeurysmatic tissues. The authors conclude that MRI is a useful and accurate technique for the preoperative examination of abdominal aortic aneurysm patients.

A clinical case is the basis for a report on the possibility that afferent loop syndrome might present as an epiphenomenon in gastric stump cancer. Stress is laid above all on the rarity of the syndrome and on the clinical and diagnostic difficulties of demonstrating it. The possibility that it might be a pointer to a pathology of greater clinical importance is pointed out.
