The short time evolution of three dimensional small perturbations is studied. Exhibiting spectral asymptotic stability, thin discs are nonetheless shown to host intensive hydrodynamical activity in the shape of non modal growth of initial small perturbations. Two mechanisms that lead to such behavior are identified and studied, namely, non-resonant excitation of vertically confined sound waves by stable planar inertia-coriolis modes that results in linear growth with time, as well as resonant coupling of those two modes that leads to a quadratic growth of the initial perturbations. It is further speculated that the non modal growth can give rise to secondary strato-rotational instabilities and thus lead to a new route to turbulence generation in thin discs.

We show, by means of a perturbative weakly nonlinear analysis, that the axisymmetric magneto-rotational instability (MRI) in a magnetic Taylor-Couette (mTC) flow in a thin-gap gives rise, for very small magnetic Prandtl numbers (P_m), to a real Ginzburg-Landau equation for the disturbance amplitude. The saturation amplitude A_s is found to scale in this regime as P^\delta, with 1/2<\delta<2/3 (depending on the boundary conditions adopted). The asymptotic results are shown to comply with numerical calculations performed by using a spectral code. Most of our knowledge on the nonlinear development of the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) relies on the results of numerical simulations employing the shearing box (SB) approximation. A number of difficulties arising from this approach have recently been pointed out in the literature. We thoroughly examine the effects of the assumptions made and numerical techniques employed in SB simulations. This is done in order to clarify and gain better understanding of those difficulties as well as of a number of additional serious problems, raised here for the first time, and of their impact on the results. Analytical derivations and estimates as well as comparative analysis to methods used in the numerical study of turbulence are used. Numerical experiments are performed to support some of our claims and conjectures. The following problems, arising from the (virtually exclusive) use of the SB simulations as a tool for the understanding and quantification of the nonlinear MRI development in disks, are analyzed and discussed: (i) inconsistencies in the application of the SB approximation itself; (ii) the limited spatial scale of the SB; (iii) the lack of convergence of most ideal MHD simulations; (iv) side-effects of the SB symmetry and the non-trivial nature of the linear MRI; (v) physical artifacts arising on the too small box scale due to periodic boundary conditions. The computational and theoretical challenge posed by the MHD turbulence problem in accretion disks cannot be met by the SB approximation, as it has been used to date. A new strategy to confront this challenge is proposed, based on techniques widely used in numerical studies of turbulent flows - developing (e.g., with the help of local numerical studies) a sub-grid turbulence model and implementing it in global calculations., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The hydrodynamic response of the inviscid small shearing box model of a midplane section of a rotationally supported astrophysical disk is examined. An energy functional ${\cal E}$ is formulated for the general nonlinear problem. It is found that the fate of disturbances is related to the conservation of this quantity which, in turn, depends on the boundary conditions utilized: ${\cal E}$ is conserved for channel boundary conditions while it is not conserved in general for shearing box conditions. Linearized disturbances subject to channel boundary conditions have normal-modes described by Bessel Functions and are qualitatively governed by a quantity $\Sigma$ which is a measure of the ratio between the azimuthal and vertical wavelengths. Inertial oscillations ensue if $\Sigma >1$ - otherwise disturbances must in general be treated as an initial value problem. We study the saturation near threshold of the axisymmetric magnetorotational instability (MRI) of a viscous, resistive, incompressible fluid in a thin-gap Taylor-Couette configuration. A vertical magnetic field, Keplerian shear and no-slip, conducting radial boundary conditions are adopted. The weakly non-linear theory leads to a real Ginzburg-Landau equation for the disturbance amplitude, like in our previous idealized analysis. For small magnetic Prandtl number (P \ll 1), the saturation amplitude scales as P^{2/3} while the magnitude of angular momentum transport scales as P^{4/3}. The difference with the previous scalings (~P^{1/2} and P respectively) is attributed to the emergence of radial boundary layers. Away from those, steady-state non-linear saturation is achieved through a modest reduction in the destabilizing shear. The purpose of this paper is to explore how accretion discs manifest the phenomenon of transient growth on a global scale. We investigate analytically the time response of a thin accretion disc to particular axisymmetric perturbations. To facilitate an analytical treatment we replace the energy equation with a general polytropic assumption. The asymptotic expansion of Klu\'zniak & Kita (2000), which extended the method of Regev (1983) to a full steady polytropic disc (with $n=3/2$), is further developed and implemented for both the steady (for any polytropic index) and time-dependent problems. The spatial form and temporal behaviour of selected dynamical disturbances are studied in detail. We identify the perturbation space which leads to transient growth and provide analytical solutions which manifest this expected transient growth behaviour. Three terms (physical causes) responsible for the appearance of transient growth are identified. Two depend explicitly on the viscosity while the third one is relevant also for inviscid discs. We present here both analytical and numerical results of hydrodynamic stability investigations of rotationally supported circumstellar flows using the shearing box formalism. Asymptotic scaling arguments justifying the shearing box approximation are systematically derived, showing that there exist two limits which we call small shearing box (SSB) and large shearing box (LSB). The physical meaning of these two limits and their relationship to model equations implemented by previous investigators are discussed briefly. Two dimensional (2D) dynamics of the SSB are explored and shown to contain transiently growing (TG) linear modes, whose nature is first discussed within the context of linear theory. The fully nonlinear regime in 2D is investigated numerically for very high Reynolds (Re) numbers. Solutions exhibiting sustained dynamics are found and manifest episodic but recurrent TG behavior and these are associated with the formation and long-term survival of coherent vortices. The life-time of this spatio-temporal complexity depends on the Re number and the strength and nature of the initial disturbance. We show results for a case in which the dynamical activity persists for the entire duration of the simulation (hundreds of box orbits). Some combinations of the Re number and the initial perturbation spectrum (and strength) show the transiently growing phenomenon to ultimately fade away or, in some instances, to be absent altogether. Because the SSB approximation used here is equivalent to a 2D incompressible flow, the dynamics can not depend on the Coriolis force. We present the results of numerical integrations yielding the structure of and meridional flow in axisymmetric thin viscous accretion disk models. The solutions are obtained by simplifying and approximating first the equations, using systematic asymptotic expansions in the small parameter $\epsilon$, measuring the relative disk thickness. The vertical structure is solved including radiative transfer in the diffusion approximation. Carrying out the expansion to second order in $\epsilon$ we obtain, for low enough values of the viscosity parameter $\alpha$, solutions containing {\em backflows}. These solutions are similar to the results first found by Urpin (1984), who used approximations that are only valid for large radii and the asymptotic analytical solutions of Klu\'zniak & Kita (1997), valid only for polytropic disks. The structure of accretion discs around magnetic T Tauri stars is numerically calculated using a particle hydrodynamical code, in which magnetic interaction is included in the framework of King's diamagnetic blob accretion model. Setting up the calculation so as to simulate the density structure of a quasi-steady disc in the equatorial plane of a T Tauri star, we find that the central star's magnetic field typically produces a central hole in the disc and spreads out the surface density distribution. We argue that this result suggests a promising mechanism for explaining the unusual flatness (IR excess) of T Tauri accretion disc spectra., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures; accepted for MNRAS (figure 4 is compressed and thus of slightly reduced quality)

Assuming a diamagnetic interaction between a stellar-spot originated localized magnetic field and gas blobs in the accretion disk around a T- Tauri star, we show the possibility of ejection of such blobs out of the disk plane. Choosing the interaction radius and the magnetic field parameters in a suitable way gives rise to closed orbits for the ejected blobs. A stream of matter composed of such blobs, ejected on one side of the disk and impacting on the other, can form a hot spot at a fixed position on the disk (in the frame rotating with the star). Such a hot spot, spread somewhat by disk shear before cooling, may be responsible in some cases for the lightcurve variations observed in various T-Tauri stars over the years. An eclipse-based mechanism due to stellar obscuration of the spot is proposed. Assuming high disk inclination angles it is able to explain many of the puzzling properties of these variations. By varying the field parameters and blob initial conditions we obtain variations in the apparent angular velocity of the hot spot, producing a constantly changing period or intermittent periodicity disappearance in the models., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, aas2pp4 style

We calculate tidal effects on two-dimensional thin accretion disks in binary systems. We apply a perturbation expansion to obtain an analytic solution of the tidally induced waves. We obtain spiral waves that are stronger at the inner parts of the disks, in addition to a local disturbance which scales like the strength of the local tidal force. Our results agree with recent calculations of the linear response of the disk to tidal interaction.
