The in-plane motion of an electron on helium can couple to superconducting microwave resonators via electrical dipole coupling, offering a robust and rapid readout scheme. In previous efforts, microwave resonator designs for electrons on helium have lacked the coupling strength to reach the strong coupling regime, where coherent quantum effects outlast both electron and resonator decoherence rates. High-impedance superconducting microwave resonators offer a path to strong coupling, but integrating such resonators with electrons on helium remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we introduce a high-impedance resonator design compatible with strong coupling to electrons on helium. We fabricate and measure titanium nitride resonators with median internal quality factors of $3.9\times 10^5$ and average impedance of 2.5 k$\Omega$, promising a seven-fold increase in coupling strength compared with standard 50$\Omega$ resonators. Additionally, we develop a simplified resonator model from the capacitance matrix and sheet inductance that accurately predicts the mode frequencies, significantly simplifying the design process of future resonators for investigating quantum effects with electrons on helium., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

An ensemble of electrons trapped above the surface of superfluid helium is a paradigm system for investigating, and controlling, the collective charge dynamics of low-dimensional electronic matter. Of particular interest is the ability to engineer the spatial and spectral structure of surface plasmon modes in this system for integration into hybrid quantum systems or circuit quantum electrodynamic device architectures. Here we present experiments on a hybrid electron-on-helium microchannel device designed to host microwave-frequency plasmon modes having a spatial structure dictated by the geometry of the microchannel confinement. The plasma oscillations are generated via local microwave frequency excitation of the electrons in the microchannel. When this excitation is resonant with a particular surface plasmon-mode it produces a non-equilibrium decrease in the electron conductance, which we detect via simultaneous transport measurements. We find that the spatial structure of the surface plasmons is in excellent agreement with our device design parameters and modeling, and their frequency can be tuned over a broad range (several GHz) by precisely varying the areal density of electrons in the channel. By measuring the plasma resonance spectrum lineshape, and its power dependence, we can quantify the level of spatial homogeneity associated with each plasmon mode. The results highlight the versatility of electrons on helium as a model system for investigating, and engineering, the collective mode structure of low-dimensional Coulomb liquid and solid states and demonstrate a viable path for integrating precisely engineered surface plasmons in electrons on helium with future hybrid circuit quantum electrodynamic systems., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 Appendix

We describe a helium source cell for use in cryogenic experiments that is hermetically sealed $in$ $situ$ on the cold plate of a cryostat. The source cell is filled with helium gas at room temperature and subsequently sealed using a cold weld crimping tool before the cryostat is closed and cooled down. At low temperature the helium condenses and collects in a connected experimental volume, as monitored via the frequency response of a planar superconducting resonator device sensitive to small amounts of liquid helium. This on-cryostat helium source negates the use of a filling tube between the cryogenic volumes and room temperature, thereby preventing unwanted effects such as such as temperature instabilities that arise from the thermomechanical motion of helium within the system. The stability of buoyant flows occurring in the mixed convection regime for a viscous fluid in a horizontal plane-parallel channel with adiabatic walls is investigated. The basic flow features a parallel velocity field under stationary state conditions. There exists a duality of flows, for every prescribed value of the mass flow rate across the channel cross-section, caused by the combined actions of viscous dissipation and of the buoyancy force. As pointed out in a previous study, only the primary branch of the dual solutions is compatible with the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation. Thus, the stability analysis will be focussed on the stability of such flows. The onset of the thermal instability with small-amplitude perturbations of the basic flow is investigated by assuming a very large Prandtl number, which is equivalent to a creeping flow regime. The neutral stability curves and the critical parametric conditions for the onset of instability are determined numerically.

The ExoClock project has been created with the aim of increasing the efficiency of the Ariel mission. It will achieve this by continuously monitoring and updating the ephemerides of Ariel candidates over an extended period, in order to produce a consistent catalogue of reliable and precise ephemerides. This work presents a homogenous catalogue of updated ephemerides for 450 planets, generated by the integration of $\sim$18000 data points from multiple sources. These sources include observations from ground-based telescopes (ExoClock network and ETD), mid-time values from the literature and light-curves from space telescopes (Kepler/K2 and TESS). With all the above, we manage to collect observations for half of the post-discovery years (median), with data that have a median uncertainty less than one minute. In comparison with literature, the ephemerides generated by the project are more precise and less biased. More than 40\% of the initial literature ephemerides had to be updated to reach the goals of the project, as they were either of low precision or drifting. Moreover, the integrated approach of the project enables both the monitoring of the majority of the Ariel candidates (95\%), and also the identification of missing data. The dedicated ExoClock network effectively supports this task by contributing additional observations when a gap in the data is identified. These results highlight the need for continuous monitoring to increase the observing coverage of the candidate planets. Finally, the extended observing coverage of planets allows us to detect trends (TTVs - Transit Timing Variations) for a sample of 19 planets. The Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation is the most widely employed theoretical scheme for the study of natural or mixed convection flows. However, the misunderstanding of this approximated framework is a possibility that may cause the emergence of paradoxes or, at least, incorrect conclusions. In this note, the basic features of the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation are briefly recalled and three simple examples where this theoretical scheme may be misused are provided. Such misuses of the approximation lead to erroneous conclusions that, in the examples presented in this note, entail violations of the principle of mass conservation. A discussion about the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation as an asymptotic theory obtained by letting the product of the thermal expansion coefficient and the reference temperature difference tend to zero is also presented., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Recent experiments on the coupling of the in-plane motional state of electrons floating on the surface of liquid helium to a microwave resonator have revealed the importance of helium surface fluctuations to the coherence of this motion. Here we investigate these surface fluctuations by studying the resonance properties of a superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonator filled with superfluid helium, where a significant fraction of the resonator's electromagnetic mode volume is coupled to the surface dynamics of the liquid. We present preliminary results on real-time CPW resonator frequency shifts driven by helium fluctuations, which are quantified via their power spectral density and compared with measurements using a commercial accelerometer. We find that a considerable contribution to the CPW resonator noise originates from the mechanical vibrations of the helium surface generated by the pulse tube (PT) cryocooler on the cryostat on which the experiments were performed., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. The buoyancy-induced parallel flow in a vertical cylindrical porous layer is analysed. A radial thermal gradient caused by a uniformly distributed heat source is assumed to induce the buoyant flow. The layer boundaries are modelled as isothermal and permeable to an external fluid reservoir. The onset of the convective instability is analysed by linearising the governing equations for the perturbations. The governing parameters driving the instability are the heat-source Rayleigh number and the ratio between the internal radius and the external radius. Neutral stability curves and the critical values of the Rayleigh number, the perturbation wave number and the angular frequency are computed numerically. We report on low-temperature noise measurements of a single electron transistor (SET) immersed in superfluid $^4$He. The device acts as a charge sensitive electrometer able to detect the fluctuations of charged defects in close proximity to the SET. In particular, we measure telegraph switching of the electric current through the device originating from a strongly coupled individual two-level fluctuator. By embedding the device in a superfluid helium immersion cell we are able to systematically control the thermalizing environment surrounding the SET and investigate the effect of the superfluid on the SET noise performance. We find that the presence of superfluid $^4$He can strongly suppress the switching rate of the defect by cooling the surrounding phonon bath., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The linear stability of buoyant parallel flow in a vertical porous layer with an annular cross-section is investigated. The vertical cylindrical boundaries are kept at different uniform temperatures and they are assumed to be impermeable. The emergence of linear instability by convection cells is excluded on the basis of a numerical solution of the linearised governing equations. This result extends to the annular geometry the well-known Gill's theorem regarding the impossibility of convective instability in a vertical porous plane slab whose boundaries are impermeable and isothermal with different temperatures. The extension of Gill's theorem to the annular domain is approached numerically by evaluating the growth rate of normal mode perturbations and showing that its sign is negative, which means asymptotic stability of the basic flow. A concurring argument supporting the absence of linear instability arises from the investigation of cases where the impermeability condition at the vertical boundaries is relaxed and a partial permeability is modelled through Robin boundary conditions for the pressure. With partially permeable boundaries, an instability emerges which takes the form of axisymmetric normal modes., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We study the transport of surface electrons on superfluid helium through a microchannel structure in which the charge flow splits into two branches, one flowing straight and one turned at 90 degrees. According to Ohm law, an equal number of charges should flow into each branch. However, when the electrons are dressed by surface excitations (ripplons) to form polaron-like particles with sufficiently large effective mass, all the charge follows the straight path due to momentum conservation. The basic stationary buoyant flow in a vertical annular porous passage induced by a boundary temperature difference is investigated. The vertical cylindrical boundaries are considered both isothermal and permeable to external fluid reservoirs. There exists a stationary parallel velocity field with a zero flow rate and pure conduction heat transfer. Its linear stability is analysed with normal mode perturbations of the pressure and temperature fields. The transition to convective instability is caused by the basic horizontal temperature gradient. Hence, its nature differs from that of the usual Rayleigh-B\'enard instability. The linear dynamics of the perturbed flow is formulated as an eigenvalue problem, solved numerically. Its solution provides the neutral stability curve at each fixed aspect ratio between the external radius and the internal radius. The critical Rayleigh number triggering the instability is evaluated for different aspect ratios. It is shown that the system becomes more an more unstable as the aspect ratio increases, with the critical Rayleigh number dropping to zero when the aspect ratio tends to infinity., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

We report measurements of optical absorption in the zig-zag antiferromagnet $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ as a function of temperature, $T$, magnetic field, $B$, and photon energy, $\hbar\omega$ in the range $\sim$ 0.3 to 8.3 meV, using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. Polarized measurements show that 3-fold rotational symmetry is broken in the honeycomb plane from 2 K to 300 K. We find a sharp absorption peak at 2.56 meV upon cooling below the N\'eel temperature of 7 K at $B=0$ that we identify as magnetic-dipole excitation of a zero-wavevector magnon, or antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR). With application of $B$, the AFMR broadens and shifts to lower frequency as long-range magnetic order is lost in a manner consistent with transitioning to a spin-disordered phase. From direct, internally calibrated measurement of the AFMR spectral weight, we place an upper bound on the contribution to the $dc$ susceptibility from a magnetic excitation continuum., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures in the main text. We show that small numbers of electrons, including a single electron, can be held in a novel electrostatic trap above the surface of superfluid helium. A potential well is created using microfabricated electrodes in a 5 micron diameter pool of helium. Electrons are injected into the trap from an electron reservoir on a helium microchannel. They are individually detected using a superconducting single-electron transistor (SET) as an electrometer. A Coulomb staircase is observed as electrons leave the trap one-by-one until the trap is empty. The high-power RF systems for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) program require high-power circulators at 350 MHz and 700 MHz to protect 1 MW Continuous Wave (CW) klystrons from reflected power. The 350 MHz circulator is based on the CERN, ESRF, and APS designs and has performed very well. The 700 MHz circulator is a new design. Prototype 700 MHz circulators have been high-power tested at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The first of these circulators has satisfied performance requirements. We are currently operating the front end of the accelerator production of tritium (APT) accelerator, a 7 MeV radio frequency quadrapole (RFQ) using three, 1.2 MW CW klystrons. These klystrons are required and designed to dissipate the full beam power in the collector. The klystrons have less than 1500 operational hours. One collector has failed and all collectors are damaged. This paper will discuss the damage and the difficulties in diagnosing the cause. The collector did not critically fail. Tube operation was still possible and the klystron operated up to 70% of full beam power with excellent vacuum. The indication that finally led us to the collector failure was variable emission. This information will be discussed. A hydrophonic system was implemented to diagnose collector heating. The collectors are designed to allow for mixed-phase cooling and with the hydrophonic test equipment we are able to observe: normal, single-phase cooling, mixed-phase cooling, and a hard boil. These data will be presented. The worst case beam profile from a collector heating standpoint is presented.
