Search

We present results of a continuation of our Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) search for short-period pulsations in compact stellar objects observed during Years 2 and 4 of the TESS mission that targeted the northern ecliptic hemisphere. For many of the targets, we exploit unpublished spectroscopic data to confirm or determine the object's spectral classification. From the TESS photometry, we identify 50 short-period hot-subdwarf pulsators, including 35 sdB and 15 sdOB stars. The sample contains 26 pulsators not known before the TESS mission. Nine stars show signals at both low and high frequencies, and are therefore ``hybrid'' pulsators. For each pulsator, we report the list of prewhitened frequencies and we show amplitude spectra calculated from the TESS data. We attempt to identify possible multiplets caused by stellar rotation, and we report five candidates with rotation periods between 11 and 46d. Having the search for p-mode pulsating hot subdwarfs in TESS Sectors 1 - 60 done, we discuss the completeness of the study, as well as instability strip and the evolutionary status of the stars we found. The SPICE/HeRALD collaboration is performing R&D to enable studies of sub-GeV dark matter models using a variety of target materials. Here we report our recent progress on instrumenting a superfluid $^4$He target mass with a transition-edge sensor based calorimeter to detect both atomic signals (e.g. scintillation) and $^4$He quasiparticle (phonon and roton) excitations. The sensitivity of HeRALD to the critical "quantum evaporation" signal from $^4$He quasiparticles requires us to block the superfluid film flow to the calorimeter. We have developed a heat-free film-blocking method employing an unoxidized Cs film, which we implemented in a prototype "HeRALD v0.1" detector of $\sim$10~g target mass. This article reports initial studies of the atomic and quasiparticle signal channels. A key result of this work is the measurement of the quantum evaporation channel's gain of $0.15 \pm 0.012$, which will enable $^4$He-based dark matter experiments in the near term. With this gain the HeRALD detector reported here has an energy threshold of 145~eV at 5 sigma, which would be sensitive to dark matter masses down to 220~MeV/c$^2$., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

The only proposed observation of a discrete, hexacontatetrapole ($E6$) transition in nature occurs from the T$_{1/2}$ = 2.54(2)-minute decay of $^{53m}$Fe. However, there are conflicting claims concerning its $\gamma$-decay branching ratio, and a rigorous interrogation of $\gamma$-ray sum contributions is lacking. Experiments performed at the Australian Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility were used to study the decay of $^{53m}$Fe. For the first time, sum-coincidence contributions to the weak $E6$ and $M5$ decay branches have been firmly quantified using complementary experimental and computational methods. Agreement across the different approaches confirms the existence of the real $E6$ transition; the $M5$ branching ratio and transition rate have also been revised. Shell model calculations performed in the full $pf$ model space suggest that the effective proton charge for high-multipole, $E4$ and $E6$, transitions is quenched to approximately two-thirds of the collective $E2$ value. Correlations between nucleons may offer an explanation of this unexpected phenomenon, which is in stark contrast to the collective nature of lower-multipole, electric transitions observed in atomic nuclei., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Physical Review Letters

A portable monoenergetic 24 keV neutron source based on the $^{124}$Sb-$^9$Be photoneutron reaction and an iron filter has been constructed and characterized. The coincidence of the neutron energy from SbBe and the low interaction cross-section with iron (mean free path up to 29 cm) makes pure iron specially suited to shield against gamma rays from $^{124}$Sb decays while letting through the neutrons. To increase the $^{124}$Sb activity and thus the neutron flux, a $>$1 GBq $^{124}$Sb source was produced by irradiating a natural Sb metal pellet with a high flux of thermal neutrons in a nuclear reactor. The design of the source shielding structure makes for easy transportation and deployment. A hydrogen gas proportional counter is used to characterize the neutrons emitted by the source and a NaI detector is used for gamma background characterization. At the exit opening of the neutron beam, the characterization determined the neutron flux in the energy range 20-25 keV to be 5.36$\pm$0.20 neutrons per cm$^2$ per second and the total gamma flux to be 213$\pm$6 gammas per cm$^2$ per second (numbers scaled to 1 GBq activity of the $^{124}$Sb source). A liquid scintillator detector is demonstrated to be sensitive to neutrons with incident kinetic energies from 8 to 17 keV, so it can be paired with the source as a backing detector for neutron scattering calibration experiments. This photoneutron source provides a good tool for in-situ low energy nuclear recoil calibration for dark matter experiments and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering experiments., Comment: 11 pages, 20 figures

Isomers in $^{66}$Ga, $^{67}$Ge, and $^{69}$Ge were recoil-implanted into ferromagnetic hosts of iron and gadolinium at $\approx 6$~K, and the hyperfine magnetic fields were determined by Time Differential Perturbed Angular Distribution (TDPAD) measurements. The hyperfine field strengths at $\approx 6$~K are compared to the results of previous higher-temperature measurements and the amplitudes of the $R(t)$ functions are compared to empirical expectations. The results show that gadolinium can be a suitable host for high-precision in-beam $g$-factor measurements. The results of new $g$-factor measurements for isomers in $^{66}$Ga and $^{67}$Ge are $g(^{66}$Ga$,7^{-}) = +0.126(4)$, supporting a $[\pi_{f5/2} \otimes \nu g_{9/2}]_{7^-}$ configuration assignment, and $g(^{67}$Ge$,\frac{9}{2}^{+})=-0.1932(22)$, derived from a new measurement of the ratio $g(^{67}\mathrm{Ge})/g(^{69}\mathrm{Ge}) = 0.869(9)$. These values are in agreement with previous results. The $R(t)$ amplitudes indicate that the nuclear alignment produced in the isomeric states was significantly lower than the empirically expected $\sigma/I \approx 0.35$., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

We present an analysis of oscillation mode variability in the hot B subdwarf star EPIC~220422705, a new pulsator discovered from $\sim78$~days of {\em K}2 photometry. The high-quality light curves provide a detection of 66 significant independent frequencies, from which we identified 9 incomplete potential triplets and 3 quintuplets. Those {\sl g-} and {\sl p-}multiplets give rotation periods of $\sim$ 36 and 29 days in the core and at the surface, respectively, potentially suggesting a slightly differential rotation. We derived a period spacing of 268.5\,s and 159.4\,s for the sequence of dipole and quadruple modes, respectively. We characterized the precise patterns of amplitude and frequency modulations (AM and FM) of 22 frequencies with high enough amplitude for our science. Many of them exhibit intrinsic and periodic patterns of AM and FM, with periods on a timescale of months as derived by the best fitting and \texttt{MCMC} test. The nonlinear resonant mode interactions could be a natural interpretation for such AMs and FMs after other mechanisms are ruled out. We report results of our analysis of the Kepler superaperture LC data of the open cluster NGC6791 to search for pulsating sdB stars. We checked all pixels and we found only three sdB stars to be pulsating, KIC2569576 (B3), KIC2438324 (B4) and KIC2437937 (B5). These stars were known to be pulsators before, though we extended data coverage detecting more frequencies and features in their amplitude spectra, i.e. new multiplets and more complete period spacing sequences that we used for identifying geometry of the pulsation modes. The multiplet splittings were also used to derive rotation periods. The remaining known sdBs do not show any pulsation-related light variation down to our detection thresholds. We analyzed already existing spectroscopic observations taken with the HECTOSPEC at the MMT telescope in Smithsonian Arizona and with the GMOS at the Gemini North telescope, and fitted atmospheric parameters using the Balmer lines. Four stars, B3-B6, show atmospheric parameters that are consistent with g-mode dominated sdBs. We detected hints of radial velocity variability in B3, B5, and B6, indicating these three stars may be in binaries.

We report the discovery of four new pulsating subdwarf B (sdBV) stars from Campaign 7 of the Kepler spacecraft's K2 mission. EPICs 215776487, 217280630, 218366972, and 218717602 are all gravity (g)-mode pulsators and we also detect two pressure (p)-mode pulsations in EPIC 218717602. We detect asymptotic l=1 sequences in all four stars, allowing us to identify nearly all of the g modes. We detect evenly-spaced frequency multiplets in EPIC 218717602, from which we determine a rotation period near seven days. Spectroscopic observations determine that EPIC 218366972, is in a 5.92d binary with most likely a white dwarf companion of canonical mass while the others have no detected companions. As we detect no multiplets in EPIC 218366972, it is added to the growing list of subsynchronously rotating stars. With 40 Kepler-detected sdBV stars and a growing number of TESS publications, we update an examination of the group properties to provide direction for models. We notice a correlation between effective temperature and period of maximum pulsation amplitude, at least for g-mode pulsations, and update the previously-observed effective temperature-rotation period relation., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, 1 large table at the end. We present an overview of eclipsing systems of the HW-Virginis type, based on space observations from the TESS Mission. We perform a detailed analysis of the properties of AA Dor, which was monitored for almost a full year. This excellent time-series dataset permitted us to search for both stellar pulsations and eclipse timing variations. In addition, we used the high-precision trigonometric parallax from Gaia Early Data Release 3 to make an independent determination of the fundamental stellar parameters. No convincing pulsations were detected down to a limit of 76 parts per million, however we detected one peak with false alarm probability of 0.2%. 20 sec cadences being collected during Year 3 should confirm or reject our detection. From eclipse timing measurements we were able to confirm that the orbital period is stable, with an upper limit to any period change of 5.75 $\cdot$ 10$^{-13}$ s/s. The apparent offset of the secondary eclipse is consistent with the predicted R{\o}mer delay when the primary mass is that of a canonical extended horizontal branch star. Using parallax and a spectral energy distribution corroborates that the mass of the primary in AA Dor is canonical, and its radius and luminosity is consistent with an evolutionary state beyond core helium burning. The General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) is an Antarctic balloon experiment designed for low-energy (0.1$-$0.3 GeV/$n$) cosmic antinuclei as signatures of dark matter annihilation or decay. GAPS is optimized to detect low-energy antideuterons, as well as to provide unprecedented sensitivity to low-energy antiprotons and antihelium nuclei. The novel GAPS antiparticle detection technique, based on the formation, decay, and annihilation of exotic atoms, provides greater identification power for these low-energy antinuclei than previous magnetic spectrometer experiments. This work reports the sensitivity of GAPS to detect antihelium-3 nuclei, based on full instrument simulation, event reconstruction, and realistic atmospheric influence simulations. The report of antihelium nuclei candidate events by AMS-02 has generated considerable interest in antihelium nuclei as probes of dark matter and other beyond the Standard Model theories. GAPS is in a unique position to detect or set upper limits on the cosmic antihelium nuclei flux in an energy range that is essentially free of astrophysical background. In three 35-day long-duration balloon flights, GAPS will be sensitive to an antihelium flux on the level of $1.3^{+4.5}_{-1.2}\cdot 10^{-6}\mathrm{m^{-2}sr^{-1}s^{-1}}(\mathrm{GeV}/n)^{-1}$ (95% confidence level) in the energy range of 0.11$-$0.3 GeV/$n$, opening a new window on rare cosmic physics., Comment: Accepted for publication at Astroparticle Physics, 13 pages, 5 figures

Luminosity is a measure of the colliding frequency between beam and target and it is a crucial parameter for the measurement of absolute values, such as reaction cross sections. In this paper, we make use of experimental data from the ESR storage ring to demonstrate that the luminosity can be precisely determined by modelling the measured Rutherford scattering distribution. The obtained results are in good agreement with an independent measurement based on the x-ray normalization method. Our new method provides an alternative way to precisely measure the luminosity in low-energy stored-beam configurations. This can be of great value in particular in dedicated low-energy storage rings where established methods are difficult or impossible to apply., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Stellar carbon synthesis occurs exclusively via the $3\alpha$ process, in which three $\alpha$ particles fuse to form $^{12}$C in the excited Hoyle state, followed by electromagnetic decay to the ground state. The Hoyle state is above the $\alpha$ threshold, and the rate of stellar carbon production depends on the radiative width of this state. The radiative width cannot be measured directly, and must instead be deduced by combining three separately measured quantities. One of these quantities is the $E0$ decay branching ratio of the Hoyle state, and the current $10$\% uncertainty on the radiative width stems mainly from the uncertainty on this ratio. The $E0$ branching ratio was deduced from a series of pair conversion measurements of the $E0$ and $E2$ transitions depopulating the $0^+_2$ Hoyle state and $2^+_1$ state in $^{12}$C, respectively. The excited states were populated by the $^{12}$C$(p,p^\prime)$ reaction at 10.5 MeV beam energy, and the pairs were detected with the electron-positron pair spectrometer, Super-e, at the Australian National University. The deduced branching ratio required knowledge of the proton population of the two states, as well as the alignment of the $2^+_1$ state in the reaction. For this purpose, proton scattering and $\gamma$-ray angular distribution experiments were also performed. An $E0$ branching ratio of $\Gamma^{E0}_{\pi}/\Gamma=8.2(5)\times10^{-6}$ was deduced in the current work, and an adopted value of $\Gamma^{E0}_{\pi}/\Gamma=7.6(4)\times10^{-6}$ is recommended based on a weighted average of previous literature values and the new result. The new recommended value for the $E0$ branching ratio is about 14% larger than the previous adopted value of $\Gamma^{E0}_{\pi}/\Gamma=6.7(6)\times10^{-6}$, while the uncertainty has been reduced from 9% to 5%., Comment: Accepted for publication as a Regular Article in Phys. We report on the detection of pulsations of three pulsating subdwarf B stars observed by the TESS satellite and our results of mode identification in these stars based on an asymptotic period relation. SB 459 (TIC 067584818), SB 815 (TIC 169285097) and PG 0342+026 (TIC 457168745) have been monitored during single sectors resulting in 27 days coverage. These datasets allowed for detecting, in each star, a few tens of frequencies, which we interpreted as stellar oscillations. We found no multiplets, though we partially constrained mode geometry by means of period spacing, which recently became a key tool in analyses of pulsating subdwarf B stars. Standard routine that we have used allowed us to select candidates for trapped modes that surely bear signatures of non-uniform chemical profile inside the stars. We have also done statistical analysis using collected spectroscopic and asteroseismic data of previously known subdwarf B stars along with our three stars. Making use of high precision trigonometric parallaxes from the Gaia mission and spectral energy distributions we converted atmospheric parameters to stellar ones. Radii, masses and luminosities are close to their canonical values for extreme horizontal branch stars. In particular, the stellar masses are close to the canonical one of 0.47 M$_\odot$ for all three stars but uncertainties on the mass are large. The results of the analyses presented here will provide important constrains for asteroseismic modelling., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

The electron capture process was studied for Xe$^{54+}$ colliding with H$_2$ molecules at the internal gas target of the ESR storage ring at GSI, Darmstadt. Cross section values for electron capture into excited projectile states were deduced from the observed emission cross section of Lyman radiation, being emitted by the hydrogen-like ions subsequent to the capture of a target electron. The ion beam energy range was varied between 5.5 MeV/u and 30.9 MeV/u by applying the deceleration mode of the ESR. Thus, electron capture data was recorded at the intermediate and in particular the low collision energy regime, well below the beam energy necessary to produce bare xenon ions. The obtained data is found to be in reasonable qualitative agreement with theoretical approaches, while a commonly applied empirical formula significantly overestimates the experimental findings.

Single molecular electrets exhibiting single molecule electric polarization switching have been long desired as a platform for extremely small non-volatile storage devices, although it is controversial because of the poor stability of single molecular electric dipoles. Here we study the single molecular device of GdC82, where the encapsulated Gd atom forms a charge center, and we have observed a gate controlled switching behavior between two sets of single electron transport stability diagrams. The switching is operated in a hysteresis loop with a coercive gate field of around 0.5Vnm. Theoretical calculations have assigned the two conductance diagrams to corresponding energy levels of two states that the Gd atom is trapped at two different sites of the C82 cage, which possess two different permanent electrical dipole orientations. The two dipole states are stabilized by the anisotropic energy and separated by a transition energy barrier of 70 meV. Such switching is then accessed to the electric field driven reorientation of individual dipole while overcoming the barriers by the coercive gate field, and demonstrates the creation of a single molecular electret.

Excited states in $^{58,60,62}$Ni were populated via inelastic proton scattering at the Australian National University as well as via inelastic neutron scattering at the University of Kentucky Accelerator Laboratory. The Super-e electron spectrometer and the CAESAR Compton-suppressed HPGe array were used in complementary experiments to measure conversion coefficients and $\delta(E2/M1)$ mixing ratios, respectively, for a number of $2^+ \rightarrow 2^+$ transitions. The data obtained were combined with lifetimes and branching ratios to determine $E0$, $M1$, and $E2$ transition strengths between $2^+$ states. The $E0$ transition strengths between $0^+$ states were measured using internal conversion electron spectroscopy and compare well to previous results from internal pair formation spectroscopy. The $E0$ transition strengths between the lowest-lying $2^+$ states were found to be consistently large for the isotopes studied.

Transient-field $g$-factor measurements in inverse kinematics were performed for the first-excited states of the stable, even isotopes of Ge and Se. The $g$ factors of $^{74}$Ge and $^{74}$Se were measured simultaneously using a cocktail beam, which eliminates most possible sources of systematic error in a relative $g$-factor measurement. The results are $g(^{74}{\rm Se})/g(^{74}{\rm Ge})=1.34(7)$, $g(^{70}{\rm Ge})/g(^{74}{\rm Ge}) = 1.16(15)$, $g(^{72}{\rm Ge})/g(^{74}{\rm Ge})=0.92(13)$, $g(^{76}{\rm Ge})/g(^{74}{\rm Ge})=0.88(5)$, $g(^{76}{\rm Se})/g(^{74}{\rm Se})=0.96(7)$, $g(^{78}{\rm Se})/g(^{74}{\rm Se})=0.82(5)$, $g(^{80}{\rm Se})/g(^{74}{\rm Se})=0.99(7)$ and $g(^{82}{\rm Se})/g(^{74}{\rm Se})=1.19(6)$. The measured $g$-factor ratios are in agreement with ratios from previous measurements, despite considerable variation in previous reported absolute values. The absolute values of the $g$ factors remain uncertain, however the Rutgers parametrization was used to set the transient-field strength and then compare the experimental $g$ factors with shell-model calculations based on the JUN45 and jj44b interactions. Modest agreement was found between experiment and theory for both interactions. The shell model calculations indicate that the $g(2^+_1)$ values and trends are determined largely by the balance of the spin carried by orbital motion of the protons., Comment: 13 pages; 12 figures. HD4539 (alias PG0044+097 or EPIC220641886) is a bright (V=10.2) long-period V1093 Her-type subdwarf B (sdB) pulsating star that was observed by the Kepler spacecraft in its secondary (K2) mission. We use the K2 light curve (78.7 days) to extract 169 pulsation frequencies, 124 with a robust detection. Most of these frequencies are found in the low-frequency region typical of gravity (g-)modes, but some higher frequencies corresponding to pressure (p-)modes are also detected. Therefore HD4539 is a hybrid pulsator and both the deep and surface layers of the star can potentially be probed through asteroseismology. The lack of any frequency splitting in its amplitude spectrum suggests that HD4539 has a rotation period longer than the K2 run and/or that it is seen pole-on. From asymptotic period spacing we see many high-degree modes, up to l=12, in the spectrum of HD4539, with amplitudes as low as a few ppm. A large fraction of these modes can be identified and for ~29% of them we obtain a unique and robust identification corresponding to l<=8. Our study includes also a new determination of the atmospheric parameters of the star. From low-resolution spectroscopy we obtain Teff=22,800+-160 K, logg=5.20+-0.02 and log(N(He)/N(H))=-2.34+-0.05. By fitting the SED we obtain Teff=23,470+650-210 K, R_star=0.26+-0.01 Rsun and M_star=0.40+-0.08 Msun. Moreover, from 11 high-resolution spectra we see the radial velocity variations caused by the stellar pulsations, with amplitudes of ~150~m/s for the main modes, and we can exclude the presence of a companion with a minimum mass higher than a few Jupiter masses for orbital periods below ~300 days., Comment: 13 pages, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The even cadmium isotopes near the neutron midshell have long been considered good examples of vibrational nuclei. However, the vibrational nature of these nuclei has been questioned based on E2 transition rates that are not consistent with vibrational excitations. In the neighbouring odd-mass nuclei, the g factors of the low-excitation collective states have been shown to be more consistent with a deformed rotational core than a vibrational core. Beyond the comparison of vibrational versus rotational models, recent advances in computational power have made shell-model calculations feasible for Cd isotopes, which may give insights into the emergence and nature of collectivity in the Cd isotopes. Collective excitations in the A ~ 100 region were studied through magnetic moments and electromagnetic transitions in 111Cd. The spectroscopy of 111Cd has been studied following Coulomb excitation. Angular correlation measurements, transient-field g-factor measurements and lifetime measurements by the Doppler-broadened line shape method were performed. The structure of the nucleus was explored in relation to particle-vibration versus particle-rotor interpretations. Large-scale shell-model calculations were performed with the SR88MHJM Hamiltonian. Excited-state g factors have been measured, spin assignments examined and lifetimes determined. Attention was given to the reported $5/2^{+}$ 753-keV and $3/2^{+}$ 755-keV states. The $3/2^{+}$ 755-keV level was not observed; evidence is presented that the reported $3/2^+$ state was a misidentification of the $5/2^{+}$ 753-keV state. It is shown that the g factors and level structure of 111Cd are not readily explained by the particle-vibration model. A particle-rotor approach has both successes and limitations. The shell-model approach successfully reproduces much of the known low-excitation structure in 111Cd.

We report the first measurement of low-energy proton-capture cross sections of $^{124}$Xe in a heavy ion storage ring. $^{124}$Xe$^{54+}$ ions of five different beam energies between 5.5 AMeV and 8 AMeV were stored to collide with a windowless hydrogen target. The $^{125}$Cs reaction products were directly detected. The interaction energies are located on the high energy tail of the Gamow window for hot, explosive scenarios such as supernovae and X-ray binaries. The results serve as an important test of predicted astrophysical reaction rates in this mass range. Good agreement in the prediction of the astrophysically important proton width at low energy is found, with only a 30% difference between measurement and theory. Larger deviations are found above the neutron emission threshold, where also neutron- and ${\gamma}$-widths significantly impact the cross sections. The newly established experimental method is a very powerful tool to investigate nuclear reactions on rare ion beams at low center-of-mass energies.

KIC 10001893 is a V1093 Her type pulsating subdwarf-B star, which was observed extensively by the Kepler spacecraft. It was a part of the survey searching for compact pulsators in the Kepler field of view. An amplitude spectrum of the star demonstrates a rich content of g-modes between 102 and 496 {\mu}Hz as well as a few p-modes above 2000 {\mu}Hz. In total, we found 110 frequencies. The g-mode region contains 104 frequencies, while the p-mode region contains just six, altogether indicating the hybrid nature of KIC 10001893. The main goal of our analysis was to identify the detected modes and to find some features, which will significantly help modeling of the star. We found no multiplets, which points at a pole-on orientation, however, we defined modal degrees and relative radial orders using asymptotic period spacing. Eventually, we assigned 32 dipole l = 1 and 18 quadrupole l = 2 modes. The most remarkable feature we found are trapped modes, which are clearly seen in a reduce period diagram. It is the first time that three trapped modes are detected in one pulsating sdB star. Since the more trapped modes we find, the better sounding of the stellar interior we can do, this feature provides important constraints on the physical structure of the star. Mode trapping is likely caused by the He-H transition region and therefore it provides crucial constraints for making realistic theoretical models of hot subdwarfs.

Quantum computation requires qubits that satisfy often-conflicting criteria, including scalable control and long-lasting coherence. One approach to creating a suitable qubit is to operate in an encoded subspace of several physical qubits. Though such encoded qubits may be particularly susceptible to leakage out of their computational subspace, they can be insensitive to certain noise processes and can also allow logical control with a single type of entangling interaction while maintaining favorable features of the underlying physical system. Here we demonstrate a qubit encoded in a subsystem of three coupled electron spins confined in gated, isotopically enhanced silicon quantum dots. Using a modified "blind" randomized benchmarking protocol that determines both computational and leakage errors, we show that unitary operations have an average total error of 0.35%, with 0.17% of that coming from leakage driven by interactions with substrate nuclear spins. This demonstration utilizes only the voltage-controlled exchange interaction for qubit manipulation and highlights the operational benefits of encoded subsystems, heralding the realization of high-quality encoded multi-qubit operations., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures
