Many companies in the footwear industry are likely to emerge stronger later in 1999 after the inventory oversupply is brought back to normal at the retail level and gross margins for both retailers and manufacturers improve. However, the rapid expansion of retail store square footage has been a problem and this is likely to change in the near future, and new product introductions are also being planned. These stocks are best suited for investors with long-term goals.

Profits and share prices of the dominant athletic footwear companies have continued to be weak in 1998, and the industry may be further harmed by the lockout of players in the National Basketball Association during the 1998-1999 season. Non-athletic shoe companies are also beginning to be hurt, as well, and recovery is not expected for several quarters in the future. These stocks are not recommended for conservative investors in 1998.

The shoe industry is expected to lag behind 50% of other industries in 1995, but investors may find some firms that look appealing. Casual footwear follows the trend to dress casually, even while at work on Fridays. Athletic shoe firms will find their outlook improved as foreign sales increase and as consumer tastes shift. However, this group of stocks remain volatile and investors should examine them with caution.

Forecasts for shoe industry stocks in 1994 are not particularly good. The Brown Group and L.A. Gear seem poor investment choices because of uncertainties surrounding their restructurings. Manufacturers, such as Reebok International and Nike, will probably suffer from fashion trends away from athletic footwear in favor of outdoor boots and casual shoes. The industry could benefit from the implementation of the North American Free Trade Act, however.

The shoe industry stocks are not a good investment in Nov 1993, due to the volatility of changing fashion trends and weak international trade. Athletic shoe manufacturers are developing new products to enter the hiking or heavy boot trend, and firms such as Nike and Reebok International may be good long-term prospects as they enter this market. Investors should exercise caution when choosing stocks from this group, and may want to choose companies that are good for the long-term.
