A 32-year-old female American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) was presented with a squamous cell carcinoma of the middle digit of the right foot. No clinical, hematologic, or radiologic evidence of metastasis was present. Salvage amputation of the digit resulted in complete cure, whereas previous electrosurgery and radiation therapy were unsuccessful. Three years later, another squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed in the middle digit of the left foot. The digit was also amputated. Seven months after the second amputation, the bird did not have any recurrence or signs of metastasis.

This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of chicken, pigeon and turkey demineralized bone matrix (DBM) powder in stimulating the healing process in 1-cm ulna defects in pigeons. A total of 9, 11 and 9 pigeon ulnas with 1-cm defect were treated with chicken, pigeon and turkey DBM, respectively. Avian DBM prepared from chicken, pigeon and turkey sources induced bone formation via endochondral and intramembranous processes, as in mammalian studies. No significant differences were observed in the percentage of new bone, percentage of cartilage, surface-forming osteoblast area, or osteoclast count between gaps treated with chicken, pigeon, and turkey DBM. However, a significantly (p<0.05) higher percentage of inflammatory area was observed in gaps treated with chicken DBM than in gaps treated with pigeon DBM.

Thirty five pigeons with mid-shaft transverse ulna fracture treated with intramedullary pin-external skeletal fixator (IM-ESF tie-in) technique showed healed in 94% (33 ulnas) of the cases. Only 2 ulnas (6%) showed evidence of delayed healing. Most of the fracture sites healed with secondary bone healing (84%). Primary bone healing occurred in only 3 birds (8.6%). No evidence of implant failure was found in any ulna treated with this technique.
