This report is a protocol of a systematic review and a meta-analysis concerning the link between oral contraceptives and executive functioning. Recently the link between oral contraceptives (OC) and cognitive functioning has been evaluated in 3 literature reviews (Gogos et al., 2014; Warren et al., 2014; Laird et al., 2019). However, there is still no consensus on the relationship between OC and executive functioning. According to the review by Gogos et al. (2014), only some studies report a positive correlation between oral contraceptives (OC) and cognitive performance, namely improved verbal memory, associative learning and spatial attention. Warren et al. (2014) also found improved verbal memory associated with OC use along with an improvement of visuospatial ability depending on the progestin androgenicity. However, both reviews concluded that the results of the studies are contradictory and need further investigation. In their review, Laird et al. (2019) underlined again that androgenic OC improved visuospatial ability and they added that anti-androgenic OC improved verbal fluency. They also noted that there is a lack of research on the impact of OC on executive functions. According to the Miyake & Friedman’s model (2012, p. 2), the main executive functions are shifting (“switching flexibly between tasks or mental sets”), updating (“constant monitoring and rapid addition/deletion of working-memory contents”) and inhibition (“deliberate overriding of dominant or prepotent responses”). To our best knowledge, no meta-analysis has ever been conducted on the relationship between the use of OC and executive functions. Thus, the main aim of this meta-analysis is to fill in this gap in the litterature by systematically reviewing and comparing through statistical analysis the available literature on the link between OC and executive functioning. Research question: What is the relationship between OC and executive functioning ? The effect size of the difference in executive performance between women using OC vs. women cycling naturally (cross-sectional studies) or being given a placebo (experiments) will be evaluated through pre and post measures for the experimental group in studies using randomized control trials and through group comparison in cross-sectional studies. Population: premenopausal women Intervention: use of OC (or no intervention if cross-sectional study - participants are already taking OC) Comparison: women who do not use OC Outcome: levels of executive functioning Study design of selected studies: experimental or cross-sectional
