Abstract

Dry granular flows are very common both in many natural phenomena (flow-like landslides) as well as in industrial processes. To model granular flows in the framework of continuum mechanics, a key issue is the formulation of a suitable constitutive model, capable of capturing the complex rheological behaviour of the granular material in a wide range of strain rates. In this contribution, a physically based model capable of reproducing the behaviour of granular materials in different flow regimes is briefly summarized. Both the stress tensor and the dissipated energy are calculated as the sum of a quasi-static and a collisional contribution: the former one is modelled by employing an elasto-plastic model incorporating the critical state concept, whereas the latter stems from the kinetic theory of granular gases. The constitutive model has been implemented in the MPM research code Anura3D and applied to the simulation of the collapse of a dry granular column. The results show that the model can deal with the phase transition between the solid- and the fluid-like behaviour. The evolution of the state variables, the state of stress and the energy contributions is investigated in details.

Abstract

With this study, we wanted to evaluate HIV-positive pregnant mothers followed at the HIV Reference Center of Friuli Venezia Giulia and to describe obstetric treatment aimed at identifying vertical transmission factors and at undertaking a correct diagnostic-therapeutic approach to this patient group. The data include a large case series from the European Collaborative Study on HIV in Pregnancy, in which our facility is a collaborating center.The protocol includes the administration of personalized antiretroviral therapy to seropositive patients at the first visit. An elective caesarean section is performed at 38 weeks gestation. Antiretroviral therapy is continued in the neonate. Breastfeeding is prohibited.From 1998 to 2002, 28 pregnant mothers with HIV infection were followed. Most patients came from out of region and had acquired the infection through heterosexual intercourse with a serodiscordant partner. In 1 in 3 patients, a diagnosis of seropositivity was made during pregnancy. One case of vertical transmission was observed.When appropriate prevention measures are instituted, the percentage of vertical transmission of infection can be reduced to less than 1% in Europe today. An important part of this effort is early screening for HIV infection in pregnancy. Other fundamental measures are the institution of antiretroviral therapy starting from the first weeks of pregnancy, monitoring of pregnancy at a tertiary reference center, intravenous administration of therapies before caesarean section, possibly not during labor and with the membrane intact. Equally important factors are neonatal therapy, adequate pediatric monitoring after the infant is born and discontinuation of breastfeeding.

Abstract

Nell'ottica di apprestare strumenti energici ed efficaci per combattere la criminalità organizzata, l'attuale legislazione processuale penale si contraddistingue per la presenza di una disciplina repressiva che vede il processo piegarsi a strumento di difesa sociale senza tuttavia conciliare l'efficacia degli strumenti predisposti con il rispetto dei valori cardine sanciti dalla Carta fondamentale a tutela del singolo. In un sistema processuale apertamente garantista e doverosamente informato al rispetto del dettato costituzionale, non vi è però spazio per un modello di accertamento della responsabilità deviante dalle regole ordinarie, fondato sulla tipologia di reato contestato. Il presente lavoro si prefigge l’obiettivo di analizzare le norme inerenti la formazione della prova nei processi di criminalità organizzata, cercando di individuare una diversa e possibile soluzione de iure condendo che sia in grado di bilanciare gli interessi di cui il legislatore si è fatto portavoce ed i valori cardine tutelati dalla Costituzione.

Abstract

Objective. Hyperferritinemia is frequent in chronic liver diseases of any cause, but the extent to which ferritin truly reflects iron stores is variable. In these patients, both liver iron and fat are found in variable amount and association. Liver biopsy is often required to quantify liver fat and iron, but sampling variability and invasiveness limit its use. We aimed to assess single breath-hold multiecho magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the simultaneous lipid and iron quantification in patients with hyperferritinemia. Material and methods. We compared MRI results for both iron and fat with their respective gold standards - liver iron concentration and computer-assisted image analysis for steatosis on biopsy. We prospectively studied 67 patients with hyperferritinemia and other 10 consecutive patients were used for validation. We estimated two linear calibration equations for the prediction of iron and fat based on MRI. The agreement between MRI and biopsy was evaluated. Results. MRI showed good performances in both the training and validation samples. MRI information was almost completely in line with that obtained from liver biopsy. Conclusion. Single breath-hold multiecho MRI is an accurate method to obtain a valuable measure of both liver iron and steatosis in patients with hyperferritinemia.

Abstract

The dynamic interaction between granular flowing masses and obstacles is a very complex phenomenon involving large displacements and high strain rates. To simulate the event in a continuum-based framework both advanced numerical tools and constitutive relationships are required. In this work, the impact of a dry granular mass against a rigid wall is numerically simulated using the open-source Material Point Method code ANURA3D, while the constitutive model proposed by Marveggio et al., 2021 is adopted for the granular mass. The model accounts for rate and grain packing dependence, which have been shown to be crucial to reproduce the propagation of compression and rarefaction waves inside the mass. The model is capable of reproducing “solidification” and “liquefaction” phenomena observed in the DEM impact tests results already available in the literature.

Abstract

The numerical simulation of rapid landslides is quite complex mainly because constitutive models capable of simulating the mechanical behaviour of granular materials in the pre-collapse and post-collapse regimes are still missing. The goal of this paper is to introduce a constitutive model capable of capturing the response of dry granular flows from quasi-static to dynamic conditions, in particular when the material experiences a sort of solid-to-fluid phase transition. An ideal assembly of identical spheres under simple shear conditions is considered. In the constitutive model, void ratio and granular temperature have been chosen as state variables, and both shear and normal stresses are computed as the sum of two contributions: the quasi-static one and the collisional one. The former is determined by using a perfect elasto-plastic model including the critical state concept, while the latter is derived from the kinetic theory of granular gases. The evolution of the granular temperature, fundamentally governing the material phase transition, is obtained by imposing the kinetic fluctuating energy balance. The constitutive relationship has been integrated, under both constant pressure and constant volume conditions, and the influence of shear strain rate, initial void ratio and normal pressure on the mechanical response has been investigated.
