Objective: Currently, there is no established treatment protocol to treat interdental papillary loss. This research aimed to evaluate the outcomes of interdental papillary reconstruction using minimally invasive surgery, with injectable hyaluronic acid gel. Method and materials: Seventeen patients were included, each with five sites of class 1 papillary recession (40 sites in the maxilla and 45 sites in the mandible). Subperiosteal tunneling was performed through a horizontal incision made apical to the base of the papilla without penetrating it. The free gingival sulcus was sealed by 000 retraction cord. A total of 0.2 to 0.6 mL hyaluronic acid was injected gradually. The incision was sutured with poly-glycolic sutures. Treated sites underwent clinical and digital evaluation at three follow-up time points (1 month, 3 months, and 6 months). Results: The interdental papillary defect height in the maxillary sites significantly reduced by 60%, 66%, and 42% at 1,3, and 6 months, respectively. In mandibular sites, the reduction was 54%, 55%, and 40% at the same follow-up time points. Regarding interdental papillary defect surface area in the maxilla, the reduction was 65%, 71%, and 45% at 1, 3, and 6 months. In the mandible, a reduction of 60%, 64%, and 48% was noticed at the same time points. Regarding patients' pain level score, during the day of surgery, 16 patients reported pain; the average pain score out of 10 was 3.94, and 11 patients (64.7%) needed to take analgesics. The pain generally subsided in the following days. At the day of treatment, 12 out of the 17 patients (70.6%) reported mild difficulty in speaking and eating. No complication, hypersensitivity, or allergy was noted in any patient. Conclusion: Subperiosteal tunneling with hyaluronic acid injection demonstrates clinical improvements in papilla height and papillary recession surface area reduction after 3 months of follow-up, with reduction in improvement after 6 months. Clinical significance: Adjunctive use of hyaluronic acid injection with minimally invasive surgery in interdental papillary management may improve clinical and esthetic outcomes. Introduction: Research suggests that recessions correlate with reductions in crash counts. However, knowledge is still scarce regarding the causality of this association, and the mechanisms through which economic shocks affect crash numbers are not well understood. We address these research gaps by applying an econometric methodology that has so far not been used for these research questions. Method: We use a quasi-natural experimental approach as our identification strategy. By exploiting the spatial heterogeneity of a shock, we define affected and less affected regions as treatment and control units. A synthetic control approach is applied to identify the causal impact of a shock on crash counts and explore the mechanisms contributing to this effect. As a case study, we use the 2008/09 financial crisis in Germany and exploit its high spatial variation. Results: We find that the crisis caused a significant crash rate reduction of 8% in the treated region. Only 1/4 of this reduction can be attributed to the decline in exposure. The remaining 3/4 are associated with the crisis-induced decrease in crash risk. Decomposing this effect shows that the crash rates in rural areas, of newly registered vehicles, of young adults, related to alcohol and speeding decline more than the overall crash rate. In contrast, crash rates of severe crashes, of heavy-goods vehicles, at night and on weekends are not the driving factors of the decrease in crash rates. Several robustness tests validate the results. Conclusions: Crash counts declined significantly due to the economic crisis. However, the magnitude of the influence is highly dependent on the crash characteristics. Practical applications: Understanding the trajectory of crash counts is crucial for implementing traffic safety measures and working towards vision zero. We employ a neural network (NN) approach—Long Short‐Term Memory (LSTM)—to study agricultural commodity prices during the 2008 Great Recession and the COVID‐19 recession. Our analysis reveals more structural breaks and higher volatility in plant‐based commodities like corn and soybeans during recessions compared with animal‐based commodities. The price reactions varied among commodities, with corn responding first to both recessions, while milk price, which was found independent of other prices, recovered last from the financial recession and first from the disease‐induced recession. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to design a financing model for profit-oriented sports with an emphasis on women's sports. Methods: This research is exploratory in terms of the type of purpose and qualitative research in terms of the type of strategy, in which the data theory of the foundation method was used. Participants in the study were experts in the field of women's sports who were selected according to the method of purposeful sampling and theoretical saturation equal to 15 people. Three overlapping processes of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding were used to analyze the data, and the Lincoln and Guba (1985) criteria used, which are based on reliability, transferability, reliability, and verifiability, were used for reliability and generalizability. Results: According to the research findings in the open coding section 114 concepts, in the axial coding section 20 sub-categories and finally in the selective coding stage 5 main categories (causal conditions, contextual conditions, interfering conditions, strategies and consequences) were counted. Conclusion: Based on the research findings, it is suggested to the relevant authorities to pay attention to these categories and their sub-categories in financing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study investigates the associations of retrospective reports of Recession hardships with 10-year changes in subjective and objective indicators of sleep, and whether these associations differ by race and gender. Methods: Five hundred and one adults (14.57% Black; 54.49% female) from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study reported on the subjective Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) across two waves (pre-Recession, collected 2004–2009; post-Recession, collected 2017–2022), as well as Recession hardships since 2008. A sub-sample of 201 adults (25.37% Black; 58.21% female) provided objective actigraphy-measured sleep data (total sleep time, sleep onset latency, and sleep efficiency) across the two waves. Results: Descriptive analyses revealed Black participants had higher average Recession hardships, poorer post-Recession PSQI scores, and poorer post-Recession actigraphy sleep quantity and quality compared to white participants. Females had higher average Recession hardships compared to males; and reported poorer post-Recession PSQI, but had better objective post-Recession sleep quantity and quality compared to males. Regression models showed Recession hardships (across overall events, and sub-domains of financial and housing hardships) were associated with poorer PSQI and actigraphy-measured sleep efficiency following the Recession, adjusting for sociodemographic covariates, corresponding pre-Recession sleep variables, and pre-Recession chronic conditions. There was no evidence for significant moderation by race on sleep outcomes. However, gender moderation indicated associations between housing hardships and poorer actigraphy-measured sleep efficiency were more apparent for females than for males. Conclusions: Findings indicate that Recession hardships (particularly in financial and housing domains) may be manifested in poor sleep. Summary: The global financial crisis and Covid‐19 recession have renewed discussion concerning trend‐cycle discovery in macroeconomic data, and boosting has recently upgraded the popular Hodrick‐Prescott filter to a modern machine learning device suited to data‐rich and rapid computational environments. This paper extends boosting's trend determination capability to higher order integrated processes and time series with roots that are local to unity. The theory is established by understanding the asymptotic effect of boosting on a simple exponential function. The increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events poses significant challenges to sustainable water resource management, leading to severe natural disasters. To mitigate these challenges, understanding the hydrological characteristics of watersheds, especially baseflow, is critical for enhancing watershed resilience and supporting sustainable water quality and resource management. However, conventional watershed models often neglect the accurate simulation of baseflow recession. This study proposes a method for calculating and applying the alpha factor for each hydrologic response unit (HRU) in the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), considering both temporal and spatial variability in baseflow. The study watershed has undergone significant development, increasing the need for effective water management strategies that promote long-term sustainability. The alpha factor was computed using BFlow2021, and its effectiveness was evaluated by comparing recession and baseflow estimates under different methods. The results indicate that incorporating monthly HRU-specific alpha factors significantly improves model predictions of recession characteristics, highlighting the need for a more spatially and temporally detailed approach in hydrological modeling. The proposed methodology can help clarify the connection between recession and baseflow and can be applied to ungauged stations, offering a valuable tool for sustainable watershed and water quality management. The income smoothing (IS) literature connected with changes in the external environment provides unclear results whether this phenomenon occurs in expansion or in crisis. Given that a substantial amount of credit risk is generated in retail banking, this study exploits a large number of micro‐loan portfolio level data of a systemic Greek bank and examines, for the first time, the IS behaviour at the retail banking level, contrasting the expansion period (2006–2008) with the financial crisis period (2009–2011). This specific case study provides more granular data compared with traditional archival studies, thus allowing the immediate and more frequent identification of exogenous (such as crisis effects) and endogenous (such as the geographic origination of loan portfolios) features that may affect IS practices. Based on the association between pre‐provision loan income and loans loss provisions as a proxy for IS, we employ the robust Mean Group estimator (Pesaran and Smith, Journal of Econometrics, 1995;68(1):79–113) and find that this association is higher in expansionary periods and declines in recession. We intend to show the directional volatility spillovers between the European short term interbank lending rates (3‐month Euro Interbank Offered Rate [EURIBOR] and Euro Short‐Term Rate [ESTR]) and the Hungarian Budapest Interbank Offered Rate (BUBOR) and Euro‐Hungarian Forint exchange rate. To determine the extent to which the variables affect each other's volatilities we build a five‐variable vector autoregression (VAR) and determine the spillover table like in Diebold‐Yilmaz's 2012 work. This methodology is preferred to a simple impulse response function (IRF) because we manage to avoid the problem of non‐orthogonal innovations via the generalized forecast error variance decomposition framework. The issue of variable ordering, therefore, does not arise. We focus on three episodes of increased volatility in Hungarian and European short‐term interest rates: Q3–Q4 of 2019, Q1 of 2020 and Q3 of 2022. These episodes correspond to volatility spikes in EU markets that to some extent had a measurable spillover effect on Hungarian interbank rates. We find that on average, across the entire sample of 957 observations, about 6.3% of the volatility forecast error variance in all five European and Hungarian variables comes from spillovers. The total and directional spillovers over the sample are extremely low. We conclude that the European Central Bank's surprise policy decisions have a marginal impact on Hungarian interbank rates. We also find that BUBOR is primarily a net receiver of spillovers from the MAX short‐term government bond benchmark rather than the EURIBOR—this disproved our initial considerations. Aims: This randomized trial assessed for the first time the efficacy of coronally advanced flap (CAF) followed by micro‐needling (MN) in contrast to CAF with acellular dermal matrix (ADM) on gingival thickness (GT, primary outcome), keratinized tissue width (KTW), clinical attachment level (CAL), probing depth (PD), recession depth (RD), recession width (RW), recession reduction (Rec‐Red), complete root coverage (CRC) and percentage of root coverage (all secondary outcomes) in management of RT1 gingival recession in patients with thin gingival phenotype. Methods: A total of 24 patients (n = 24) with a thin gingival phenotype and single RT1 gingival recession in the aesthetic zone were randomly allocated to test‐ (CAF + MN; n = 12) or control group (CAF + ADM; n = 12). All clinical parameters were evaluated at baseline, 3 and 6 months. Results: Both groups independently demonstrated significant gain in GT, RW, RD, CAL, PD, Rec‐Red, CRC and percentage of root coverage, with reduced PI and BOP (p <.05) at 3 and 6 months, without intergroup differences (p >.05). At 6 months, KTW gain was significantly higher in CAF + MN (5.08 ± 0.9 mm) than in CAF + ADM‐group (4.25 ± 1.06 mm; p <.05). Stepwise linear regression model with GT as dependent variable showed that base‐line GT was the only statistically significant predictor for GT with a direct correlation between base‐line GT and GT after 6 months. Conclusion: CAF followed by MN could represent a promising graft‐less approach for increasing gingival thickness, comparable to CAF with ADM, with superior keratinized tissue width improvement, in the treatment of RT1 recession defects in patients with thin gingival phenotype. Background: In high-income countries, socioeconomically disadvantaged adolescents experience a higher risk of obesity, which may have been further exacerbated during the early phase of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aimed to investigate the association between obesity and familial financial insecurity, utilizing data on subjective household socioeconomic status (SES) and perceived family-level financial deterioration induced by COVID-19. Methods: We utilized data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a nationally representative sample of Korean adolescents, in 2020 and 2021. The independent and joint associations of two primary exposures, subjective household SES and perceived family-level financial deterioration, with obesity were assessed using multivariable logistic regression models. Results: Among 106,979 adolescents aged 12–18 years, 16.9% of boys and 9.0% of girls met the criteria for obesity. Notably, 70.5% reported experiencing COVID-19-related financial deterioration. Both subjective household SES and perceived family-level financial deterioration independently and synergistically increased the odds of obesity. A graded association was observed between obesity and lower SES and more severe financial deterioration, particularly among girls. Younger adolescents were more sensitive to household SES, whereas older adolescents were more sensitive to financial deterioration. Conclusion: While the COVID-19 pandemic presented a unique social context, our findings highlight that financially insecure adolescents were at an increased risk of obesity during the early phase of the pandemic. This underscores the need for obesity-prevention strategies in times of macroeconomic recession to address not only the persistent influence of household SES but also the direct and indirect effects of family-level financial deterioration.

Practical usefulness of factor-vector autoregression has been considered, which makes it possible to study macroeconomic processes impact on the monetary policy state, to conduct full-scale monitoring and to identify economic growth impact on monetary policy. Publications devoted to the issues of unstable economic development and mathematical models describing the process of economic dynamics under conditions of high inflation and unstable development have been analyzed. The basic scenario in economy has been given. Monetary policy impact on macroeconomic variables using vector autoregressive (VAR) models has been studied. The FAVAR model with international reserves as the monetary policy variable and MIACR where the responses of one-year government bond rate and consumer index were positive have been estimated as the main instruments. The impulse responses shown indicate that the Russian authorities had a lack of monetary policy independence due to the country’s high dependence on the oil and natural gas sectors, which does not reveal evidence of monetary policy impact on lower consumer prices.

Purpose – This paper aims to analyse the short- and long-term effects of entering the Spanish labour market under tough economic conditions on young immigrant–native earnings and employment outcomes. Design/methodology/approach – The authors use cohorts, where the entry cohort into the labour market is the unit of observation. As a database, the authors use the continuous sample of working histories covering the period 2007–2021. Then, the authors estimate the model using weighted least squares. Findings – The results show that the great recession and COVID-19 led to a blockage at the entrance of the labour market, reducing the number of workers. Additionally, the authors observe an adverse impact in terms of employment and earnings on those entering the labour market. Besides, this effect varies in intensity and persistence for natives and immigrants, as well as by country of birth, age of entry, gender and educational level. Originality/value – A contribution to the literature is the analysis of the earnings and employment trajectories of young people entering the Spanish labour market for the first time during an adverse shock, such as the 2008 economic crisis or the COVID-19 crisis, and the possible differences that exist between native and immigrant workers. So, the authors analyse the labour market trajectories of workers covering the most recent years. Likewise, the authors carry out an extensive heterogeneity analysis in which they distinguish workers by educational level, gender, age of entry into the labour market and immigrants by their country of birth. This represents an additional contribution. The use of a cohort approach also contributes to the existing literature.

Drawing on the signaling theory perspective, this study examines the effect of perceived country of origin on brand performance during economic contractions. The authors specify an econometric model linking brand market share to recession periods and analyze the interaction with brand origin perception. They test the model on four years of longitudinal data on consumer packaged goods brands combined with a self-administrated consumer questionnaire to infer consumers' perceptions about brands' origins. The authors find that economic contractions differentially affect brands with different country-of-origin perceptions. The results indicate that the market share of brands that customers most identify as domestic suffers more damage during contractions than brands they perceive as foreign. The main contribution of this article is in generating a better understanding of brands' resistance to economic contractions based on their perceived country of origin. The presence of focal firms driving entire stock markets has been proven by a series of existing studies that relied on the topological properties of minimum spanning trees. Historically, central firms have been identified primarily based on the degree centrality of nodes. This article proposes an alternative selection method, combining PageRank scores and modularity classes, which does away with the problem of ties in rankings when selecting a specific number of nodes. We use PageRank-based network analysis along with regression analysis to identify focal firms in the Nasdaq-100 index during the three most significant recent recessions in the United States. This approach validates and robustly supports our two-step method, showing that the combination of minimum spanning trees and our selection method explains over 90% of the Nasdaq-100 index’s dynamics. The analysis identified significant topological changes during the global financial crisis (with CSCO emerging as the star firm) and the COVID-19 pandemic (exhibiting strong market co-movements).

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate alterations in corneal astigmatism, axial anterior corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth, and central corneal thickness (CCT) two months after the unilateral recession of lateral rectus muscle in children. Methods: This prospective study included 37 children with intermittent exotropia who would undergo unilateral lateral rectus muscle recession. All measurements were performed using Pentacam®. Comparisons were made between the operated and fellow unoperated eyes, pre- and post-operatively. The assessment was made for changes in the radius of axial curvature on major meridians at 3 and 3.5 mm from the optical corneal center in the mid-peripheral zone. Astigmatism changes of the anterior and posterior corneal surface were calculated using vector analysis software (astigMATIC®). The interaction between age or CCT and postoperative changes in anterior and posterior surface corneal astigmatism were examined with ANOVA model. Results: In the intervention group, changes in anterior and posterior corneal surface astigmatism were statistically significant, with a mean increase of 0.56Dx90 and 0.08Dx87, respectively. In the mid-peripheral corneal zone, an increase was observed in the radius of anterior corneal axial curvature, more evident temporal 3 and 3.5 mm from the corneal center on the horizontal meridian, with corresponding decrease superiorly and inferiorly at 3 and 3.5 mm from the corneal center on the vertical meridian. Discussion: The changes in total astigmatism of the operated eyes are mainly attributed to the anterior corneal surface. These changes are associated with flattening in the 180 meridian of the cornea, leading to a shift to “with-the-rule” astigmatism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Patient satisfaction is a crucial indicator of a successful dental implant treatment. Attainment of an aesthetically acceptable final result is central to this success. Hence, the primary objective of this systematic review was to identify aesthetic concerns linked to dental implants within the aesthetic zone. An electronic search was conducted on different databases such as PubMed, Medline, and Google Scholar using the key terms "tooth implant," "anterior implant," "dental implantation in the aesthetic zone," and "aesthetic area implant. Following the elimination of duplicate articles and adherence to the inclusion criteria, 14 articles (five randomized clinical trials, four prospective clinical trials, four case series, and one pilot study) published between 2007 and 2020 were deemed suitable for this review. The selected studies highlighted several aesthetic issues, such as recession, marginal bone loss, gingival loss, and pink aesthetic scores related to dental implants placed in the aesthetic zone. Addressing these challenges necessitates meticulous treatment planning, effective soft tissue management, regular follow-ups, patient education, expectation management, and collaborative efforts among specialists. A limitation of this systematic review is that it focused solely on studies conducted within a relatively short timeframe (2007–2020). However, it is essential to recognize that significant changes occurred in the treatment procedures and materials within the field during this period. Purpose: The topic of welfare and its improvement is an important issue in different societies. According to the existing literature, there are multiple factors that affect the welfare status of countries, one of which is production and its fluctuations (boom and recession). Considering the important impacts of production on the economic welfare of the country, the present study aims to explain the impact of production and, more precisely, that of increases (economic boom) and decreases (economic recession) in production on welfare in Iran. Indeed, this analysis deals with production with and without oil. The main question in the present study is whether there is a significant difference between the impacts of economic boom (increases in production with or without oil) and economic recession (decreases in production with or without oil) on welfare in the Iranian economy. Methodology: Most of the models in econometrics are based on linear (symmetric) models. In a symmetric estimate of the production effects (with or without oil), if economic welfare increases by 1 unit with an increase in production, then economic welfare will decrease by 1 unit with a decrease in production. However, what actually happens may not be this way, and the effect of increases in production (economic prosperity) on welfare may be different from the effect of decreases in production (recession). Therefore, the focus of a research model is to distinguish the effect of increases in production (with or without oil) from the effect of decreases in it. The model used in this study is based on the one proposed by Shin et al. (2014). That study discusses the issue of the asymmetrical coefficient of an influential factor and its effect on the dependent variable in the conditions of prosperity and recession. Shin’s team introduces a model called Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) regression model. In the present study, among the various welfare indices, the IEWB index has been considered as a measure of economic welfare. Multiple variables are also used to calculate this index. The IEWB index considers economic welfare as a function of the dimensions of effective per capita consumption flow, net social accumulation of wealth and resource-generating sources, economic inequality, and insecurity. In this regard, weights are considered for each of these dimensions in a special way. Therefore, the weights assigned to each dimension will be different based on different observations. The spatial scope of this study includes Iran, and the temporal scope is from 1971 to 2021. Findings and discussion: The movement trend is an indicator of economic wellbeing, showing that the index followed a downward trend after the revolution until the end of the war. After the war, the index had an upward trend with a gentler slope compared to the years before the revolution. It reached its highest level in 2017 and then started to decline again. This decrease is due to the increase in the sanctions on the Iranian economy, which led to a decrease in oil revenues, a decrease in economic growth, and an increase in the inflation rate, resulting in a decline in economic wellbeing. The results of the estimate are as follows: - In the short term, the effect of oil economic prosperity on well-being is almost more than 2.5 times the effect of economic prosperity without oil. - In the short term, the effect of oil economic recession on well-being is greater than the effect of economic recession without oil. - In the short term, the asymmetry in the impact of economic prosperity and recession (both with and without oil) on well-being is confirmed. - In the long term, considering the direct effect of economic prosperity and recession (with and without oil) on well-being, the asymmetry of production effect (with and without oil) is also confirmed. But, unlike the case in the short term, in the long term, the effect of economic recession without oil on well-being is greater than the effect of oil economic recession. - In the long term, the effect of oil economic recession on well-being is more than twice the effect of oil economic prosperity, and the effect of economic recession without oil on well-being is almost 5 times the effect of economic prosperity without oil. Conclusions and policy implications: Based on the results of this research about the impact of economic prosperity and recession on the well-being in Iran, it is suggested that, first, the government should create the necessary infrastructure to improve the people's well-being so that the prosperity periods can be prolonged. Second, economic policymakers should adopt supportive policies, especially for producers, to improve the country's well-being during recessions. Third, it seems that, if the Iranian economy moves towards non-oil dependence, in times of economic recession, there will be a need for stronger welfare policies by the government to compensate for the lost wellbeing. If there is more extensive support for non-oil sectors, they may be able to contribute to increased well-being during prosperous times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A gastrocnemius contracture is a common problem that results in decreased ankle dorsiflexion that contributes to an array of foot and ankle ailments. A common surgical treatment for this condition is a gastrocnemius recession (GR). Many adaptations of the original procedure have been described. Misinterpretations of proper GR procedures have potentially caused confusion when selecting a treatment. This paper proposes to identify errors between the use of GR and gastrocnemius-soleus recession (GSR) procedure techniques in the current literature. A systematic literature review was performed in June 2021, using the PubMed database and select orthopedic texts. Only studies that met the established criteria and either correctly or incorrectly described a GR or GSR procedure were included. After applying exclusion criteria, 108 publications were included. These articles and texts were reviewed for surgical technique and terminology errors in accordance with established parameters. The articles were classified as either: "Correct" or "Incorrect." Of the 108 publications and texts included, 18 articles incorrectly described either a GR or a GSR (16.67%). Ninety articles correctly described either a GR or a GSR (83.33%). The literature supports the use of a GR to treat a gastrocnemius contracture. Inaccurate articles create confusion as to what exactly a GR entails. Sources of ambiguity included terminology, inconsistent anatomical zone definition, and technique selection. Due to this confusion, it is suspected that patient outcomes can be impacted. Postoperative outcomes of GSR patients are worse than GR patients. Further investigation is necessary to determine if performing the incorrect procedure negatively affects patient outcomes. Gingival recession is a common condition in adults, causing esthetic issues or tooth sensitivity in patients. Gingival recession in the lower incisors area after orthodontic treatment is often difficult to predict, due to anatomical factors such as thin phenotype, shallow vestibular depth, and low frenum attachment. A young male patient presented to the clinic with severe Cairo Class I gingival recession at tooth 41 after 2 years of orthodontic treatment. Surgery combining tunneling technique and multiple papilla full thickness flap was performed to treat the patient after endodontic treatment. The clinical case was followed up to monitor gingival margin recovery one year post-surgery. The clinical case introduces a treatment method for severe localized gingival recession in the lower anterior region of a single tooth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates ways in which major recessions have impacted individuals' views about the role of the state in the economy across the world. We build on three complementary sources of data. We analyse experiences during the COVID-19 crisis using a survey of more than 39,000 adults across 14 economies as well as during the global financial crisis using a representative survey covering 34 economies. Exploiting variation across individual experiences during these crises, we find that support for state ownership and redistribution of income is significantly higher among individuals who experienced job losses and, to a lesser extent, among those who experienced an income shock. We show that policy preferences may become self-reinforcing: those who only experienced an income shock are relatively more likely to support benefits for the working poor, while those who experienced job losses favour unemployment benefits. To track the longer-term effects of crisis experiences, we rely on six waves of the World Value Surveys spanning over 100 economies and exploit differences in lifetime exposures to crises by country, year of birth and survey year. Individuals who lived through a major recession during adulthood express a stronger preference for state ownership and redistribution of income. Locusts and grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae) are pests of agricultural importance, devastating crops and pastures. This group includes hundreds of pest species and affects the livelihoods of one in every ten people worldwide. Their outbreaks can be chronic or episodic, with alternating periods of invasion and recession. Here, we review the natural enemies of locusts and grasshoppers in both their native and invaded ranges across the globe to assess the need for their conservation and maintenance as part of the natural suppression of outbreaks and to augment outbreak suppression as potential biological control agents. More than 70 natural enemies have been reported to attack locusts and grasshoppers, including entomopathogenic fungi, bacteria, nematodes, predatory insects, birds, reptiles, and mammals. Particular attention is given to the well-studied species of locusts and grasshoppers for which more information is available and to natural enemies in the locust-affected countries as part of the recent trend of looking for indigenous natural enemies. Such organisms can play a vital role in integrated pest management strategies for locusts and grasshoppers, particularly entomopathogens that can be incorporated with chemical pesticides into the management system. According to the real business cycle theory, business cycles mainly result from random exogenous shocks. In this paper, this argument is tested. I extend the Wald–Wolfowitz runs test under the assumption that a recession lasts for two periods at least and an expansion lasts for $k$ periods at least with k ≥ 2. I apply the extended runs test to the three two-valued data recession-expansion series generated by the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Center for Economic and Policy Research. The use of energy-efficient technologies tends to reduce the overall energy use of a country and foster the energy transition pathways. However, a change in energy can occur either due to a change in activity effect, intensity effect, or structural effect. The objective of the study is firstly to examine and measure the magnitude of change in energy use and identify the factor responsible for the change in energy use in the selected sectors. Secondly, the paper aims to analyze the impact of the Norwegian economy on the three effects of energy use. The study contributes significantly to identifying the sector that experiences a reduction in energy use due to energy efficiency and examining the impact of the economy on energy use. The overall energy use between 1990 and 2017 is decomposed into three different effects for selected energy-intensive sectors by deploying the ‘Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index’ (LMDI) method. Further, the impact of the Norwegian economy is examined on the three effects of energy use. It is observed that in each Phase, the key driver for change in energy use in all three Phases is the transport sector. Post-recession, the energy use in the transport sector was due to structural effects. Consumer behavior and limitations of sources of finance are the challenges for the deployment of electric vehicles even after technological breakthroughs in energy efficiency. Finally, the policies to enhance energy efficiency in energy-intensive sectors, such as the transport, and services sector must be undertaken to efficiently visualize energy efficiency-driven energy transition.

This research investigates the strategic responses adopted by Hungarian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the face of an adverse socio-economic environment. Focusing specifically on B2B firms, the study examines how the current crisis compels managers to mitigate the risk of buyer attrition. This analysis leads to the identification of four distinct adaptation strategies employed by these firms. Furthermore, the research delves into the concept of ‘upgrading’ challenging the prevailing notion that product development is the sole pathway for upgrading. The results suggest that effective upgrading can be initiated from various aspects of the firm’s operations. This novel perspective suggests that upgrading can be a viable strategy for firms seeking to escape from a captive supplier position, by improving either functionality or resilience. This is a new perspective that goes beyond what could be expected from the literature. The findings provide useful insights for policymakers and practitioners seeking to improve the performance of SMEs in the current dynamically shifting B2B landscape.

With the unstable international environment, the global economy has experienced a slowcession. Previous research on digital innovation in firms has often neglected the impact of macroeconomic cycles. This paper examines the moderating effect of the economic slowcession in the digital transformation and corporate innovation nexus, by using the China’s A-share listed companies’data during 2001 and 2021. The empirical results find that the positive impact of digitization on innovation is countercyclical. During recession, the positive impact of digital transformation on innovation is even greater compared to economic prosperity. Grouped regression results indicate that State-owned listed companies, Non-high tech companies, Large-scale companies, and Eastern companies are more affected by the positive moderating effect of the recession. This indicates that getting out of recession requires more aggressive support of these companies, which promotes innovation and economic recovery. This study provides a useful reference for countries in recession and provides an important complement to traditional economic cycle theory and innovation cycle theory. ObjectivesThis study investigates the associations of retrospective reports of Recession hardships with 10-year changes in subjective and objective indicators of sleep, and whether these associations differ by race and gender.MethodsFive hundred and one adults (14.57% Black; 54.49% female) from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study reported on the subjective Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) across two waves (pre-Recession, collected 2004–2009; post-Recession, collected 2017–2022), as well as Recession hardships since 2008. A sub-sample of 201 adults (25.37% Black; 58.21% female) provided objective actigraphy-measured sleep data (total sleep time, sleep onset latency, and sleep efficiency) across the two waves.ResultsDescriptive analyses revealed Black participants had higher average Recession hardships, poorer post-Recession PSQI scores, and poorer post-Recession actigraphy sleep quantity and quality compared to white participants. Females had higher average Recession hardships compared to males; and reported poorer post-Recession PSQI, but had better objective post-Recession sleep quantity and quality compared to males. Regression models showed Recession hardships (across overall events, and sub-domains of financial and housing hardships) were associated with poorer PSQI and actigraphy-measured sleep efficiency following the Recession, adjusting for sociodemographic covariates, corresponding pre-Recession sleep variables, and pre-Recession chronic conditions. There was no evidence for significant moderation by race on sleep outcomes. However, gender moderation indicated associations between housing hardships and poorer actigraphy-measured sleep efficiency were more apparent for females than for males.ConclusionsFindings indicate that Recession hardships (particularly in financial and housing domains) may be manifested in poor sleep. Racial and gender groups may have differential exposure and sleep-related reactivity to Recession hardships.

Aim: To evaluate and compare the effect of impregnated retraction cord vs Laser on gingival attachment level and pain perception following retraction for subgingival margins. Settings and Design: Many methods for achieving and measuring the amount of gingival retraction in fixed prosthodontic work have been advocated. Though the gingival attachment level is crucial in Periodontology, the literature available regarding the effect of these retraction methods on the same is scarce. Hence, this clinical study was designed to compare the pain perception and amount of gingival recession when impregnated cord and laser were used for retraction. Materials and Methods: In 40 subjects (age range of 20 to 40 years) with single missing maxillary incisor, the abutments were prepared with subgingival margins, to receive a full coverage metal-ceramic fixed dental prosthesis. The gingiva was retracted on one of the abutments with impregnated retraction cord and on the other with diode laser. Gingival attachment levels were compared at six sites per abutment using superimposition of digital scans, preoperative and four weeks after cementation of final prosthesis. Statistical Analysis Used: Statistical analysis of the data for gingival recession was done using t-test. Pain perception was analysed with Chi-square test. Pain perception by patients following retraction was compared with VAS scale. Results: The average values of gingival recession on buccal side were 0.61 mm and 0.38 mm and on the palatal side were 0.58 mm and 0.35 mm for impregnated retraction cord and laser respectively. Luxury brand consumption has remained strong even in countries with recessions. This study explores the role of personal factors, socio-cognitive factors, and potential marketing forces, in driving consumers' luxury purchase intentions in a market that is struggling to recover from a recession – Greece. Data were collected using a self-administered survey via an online panel. The results indicate that consumers' need to escape and impulsiveness are positively associated with luxury brand purchase intentions in a recession. Sales promotions moderate the relationship between escape, self-expression, and luxury brand purchase intentions. Consumers' perceptions about the recession effect on society also moderate the relationship between escape, self-expression, social status, and luxury brand purchase intentions. This study contributes to the literature and practice of luxury branding in recession by identifying the interplay between various personal, social, and marketing factors that can influence luxury brand purchase intentions in a recessionary environment. This paper studies the positiveness in most consumed songs during a period of sadness, worry and uncertainty: the COVID-19 crisis in comparison with previous years. In order to perform the analysis, we create an original positive music indicator using a dataset of weekly patterns for music consumption in 31 OECD countries over a five year period. Results show that negative shocks from events such as economic business cycles and the COVID-19 pandemic increase the consumption of positive songs, suggesting that society compensates the negative impact on well-being with positive music. We conduct a comparison of three portfolio investment strategies in the US stock market following the implementation of Regulation Fair Disclosure in October 2000. The strategies analyzed are analyst‐recommended, recommendation changes, and momentum portfolios. Across various time periods, company sizes, and industry sectors, the momentum portfolio consistently outperforms the other strategies. Portfolios based on analyst recommendations exhibit poor performance in industries such as consumer staples and materials, which are strongly correlated with oil prices. These industries are susceptible to external demand and supply‐side price shocks that are not adequately captured by analyst recommendations. The findings highlight firstly, the efficacy of the momentum strategy and the limitations of relying solely on analysts' recommendations, particularly in oil‐dependent sectors; and secondly, the varying dynamics and performance of different investment strategies for investors seeking to optimize their investment decisions across different sectors and market conditions. While recessions typically affect men's employment more adversely than women's in the USA, the COVID-19 recession was an exception to this trend. In this paper, we focus on the veteran population and ask whether COVID-19 affected employment outcomes differently for veteran women than veteran men. Using Current Population Survey data, we find that the COVID-19 recession had less serious effects on veteran women relative to veteran men in multiple aspects of employment conditions. We offer potential explanations for this finding and ultimately provide evidence of heterogeneity in labor market experiences based on types of recessions, gender, and population subgroups. An inventor's exploratory innovation is driven by an extensive external knowledge search. This paper contributes to this understanding by exploring how inventors' brokerages dynamic influence exploratory innovation from the perspective of ego-network, and the moderating role of knowledge diversity is also explored. Specifically, we define an inventor's direct partners (tier-1) as brokerages between the inventor and its indirect partners (tier-2) and discuss the effects of the inventor's brokerage expansion, stability, and recession on its exploratory innovation. Our empirical research is based on 4198 inventors working in the artificial intelligence field during the period from 1991 to 2019, and we identify those inventors through the USPTO database. Our results indicate that the brokerage expansion of an inventor has an inverted U-shaped impact on exploratory innovation, the brokerage stability has a positive impact on exploratory innovation, and the brokerage recession has a negative impact on exploratory innovation. Furthermore, knowledge diversity strengthens the positive impact of brokerage expansion and stability on exploratory innovation and strengthens the negative impact of brokerage recession on exploratory innovation. Why did rural areas recover from the great recession much more slowly than metropolitan areas? Due to declining tax revenues and intergovernmental aid, employment in the American local government sector fell substantially after the great recession. Cuts to local public employment were especially large, long-lasting and consequential in rural areas, which have become relatively dependent on public-sector employment and intergovernmental transfers. The public sector is relatively inconsequential in urban America, but in many rural places, a decade after the great recession, the public sector was the slowest category of employment to recover and the leading source of long-term job losses.
