1. Mining Constraints from Reference Process Models for Detecting Best-Practice Violations in Event Log

Abstract

Detecting undesired process behavior is one of the main tasks of process mining and various conformance-checking techniques have been developed to this end. These techniques typically require a normative process model as input, specifically designed for the processes to be analyzed. Such models are rarely available, though, and their creation involves considerable manual effort.However, reference process models serve as best-practice templates for organizational processes in a plethora of domains, containing valuable knowledge about general behavioral relations in well-engineered processes. These general models can thus mitigate the need for dedicated models by providing a basis to check for undesired behavior. Still, finding a perfectly matching reference model for a real-life event log is unrealistic because organizational needs can vary, despite similarities in process execution. Furthermore, event logs may encompass behavior related to different reference models, making traditional conformance checking impractical as it requires aligning process executions to individual models. To still use reference models for conformance checking, we propose a framework for mining declarative best-practice constraints from a reference model collection, automatically selecting constraints that are relevant for a given event log, and checking for best-practice violations. 2. Evaluating the Ability of LLMs to Solve Semantics-Aware Process Mining Tasks

Abstract

The process mining community has recently recognized the potential of large language models (LLMs) for tackling various process mining tasks. Initial studies report the capability of LLMs to support process analysis and even, to some extent, that they are able to reason about how processes work. This latter property suggests that LLMs could also be used to tackle process mining tasks that benefit from an understanding of process behavior. Examples of such tasks include (semantic) anomaly detection and next activity prediction, which both involve considerations of the meaning of activities and their inter-relations. In this paper, we investigate the capabilities of LLMs to tackle such semantics-aware process mining tasks. Furthermore, whereas most works on the intersection of LLMs and process mining only focus on testing these models out of the box, we provide a more principled investigation of the utility of LLMs for process mining, including their ability to obtain process mining knowledge post-hoc by means of in-context learning and supervised fine-tuning. Concretely, we define three process mining tasks that benefit from an understanding of process semantics and provide extensive benchmarking datasets for each of them. Our evaluation experiments reveal that (1) LLMs fail to solve challenging process mining tasks out of the box and when provided only a handful of in-context examples, (2) but they yield strong performance when fine-tuned for these tasks, consistently surpassing smaller, encoder-based language models., Comment: Submitted to ICPM

4. From OCEL to DOCEL -- Datasets and Automated Transformation

Abstract

Object-centric event data represent processes from the point of view of all the involved object types. This perspective has gained interest in recent years as it supports the analysis of processes that previously could not be adequately captured, due to the lack of a clear case notion as well as an increasing amount of output data that needs to be stored. Although publicly available event logs are crucial artifacts for researchers to develop and evaluate novel process mining techniques, the currently available object-centric event logs have limitations in this regard. Specifically, they mainly focus on control-flow and rarely contain objects with attributes that change over time, even though this is not realistic, as the attribute values of objects can be altered during their lifecycle. This paper addresses this gap by providing two means of establishing object-centric datasets with dynamically evolving attributes. First, we provide event log generators, which allow researchers to generate customized, artificial logs with dynamic attributes in the recently proposed DOCEL format. Second, we propose and evaluate an algorithm to convert OCEL logs into DOCEL logs, which involves the detection of event attributes that capture evolving object information and the creation of dynamic attributes from these. Through these contributions, this paper supports the advancement of object-centric process analysis by providing researchers with new means to obtain relevant data to use during the development of new techniques.

Abstract

The continued success of Large Language Models (LLMs) and other generative artificial intelligence approaches highlights the advantages that large information corpora can have over rigidly defined symbolic models, but also serves as a proof-point of the challenges that purely statistics-based approaches have in terms of safety and trustworthiness. As a framework for contextualizing the potential, as well as the limitations of LLMs and other foundation model-based technologies, we propose the concept of a Large Process Model (LPM) that combines the correlation power of LLMs with the analytical precision and reliability of knowledge-based systems and automated reasoning approaches. LPMs are envisioned to directly utilize the wealth of process management experience that experts have accumulated, as well as process performance data of organizations with diverse characteristics, e.g., regarding size, region, or industry. In this vision, the proposed LPM would allow organizations to receive context-specific (tailored) process and other business models, analytical deep-dives, and improvement recommendations. As such, they would allow to substantially decrease the time and effort required for business transformation, while also allowing for deeper, more impactful, and more actionable insights than previously possible. We argue that implementing an LPM is feasible, but also highlight limitations and research challenges that need to be solved to implement particular aspects of the LPM vision.

8. GECCO: Constraint-driven Abstraction of Low-level Event Logs

Abstract

Process mining enables the analysis of complex systems using event data recorded during the execution of processes. Specifically, models of these processes can be discovered from event logs, i.e., sequences of events. However, the recorded events are often too fine-granular and result in unstructured models that are not meaningful for analysis. Log abstraction therefore aims to group together events to obtain a higher-level representation of the event sequences. While such a transformation shall be driven by the analysis goal, existing techniques force users to define how the abstraction is done, rather than what the result shall be. In this paper, we propose GECCO, an approach for log abstraction that enables users to impose requirements on the resulting log in terms of constraints. GECCO then groups events so that the constraints are satisfied and the distance to the original log is minimized. Since exhaustive log abstraction suffers from an exponential runtime complexity, GECCO also offers a heuristic approach guided by behavioral dependencies found in the log. We show that the abstraction quality of GECCO is superior to baseline solutions and demonstrate the relevance of considering constraints during log abstraction in real-life settings., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted for IEEE ICDE 2022

12. Extracting Semantic Process Information from the Natural Language in Event Logs

Abstract

Process mining focuses on the analysis of recorded event data in order to gain insights about the true execution of business processes. While foundational process mining techniques treat such data as sequences of abstract events, more advanced techniques depend on the availability of specific kinds of information, such as resources in organizational mining and business objects in artifact-centric analysis. However, this information is generally not readily available, but rather associated with events in an ad hoc manner, often even as part of unstructured textual attributes. Given the size and complexity of event logs, this calls for automated support to extract such process information and, thereby, enable advanced process mining techniques. In this paper, we present an approach that achieves this through so-called semantic role labeling of event data. We combine the analysis of textual attribute values, based on a state-of-the-art language model, with a novel attribute classification technique. In this manner, our approach extracts information about up to eight semantic roles per event. We demonstrate the approach's efficacy through a quantitative evaluation using a broad range of event logs and demonstrate the usefulness of the extracted information in a case study.
