Die Anwendbarkeit der Hydrothermalen Carbonisierung (HTC) ist u.a. wegen eines unzureichenden Prozessverständnisses noch beschränkt. Aus diesem Grund wurde die HTC von Landschaftspflegematerial (LPM) hinsichtlich Prozessablauf, Stöchiometrie, Kinetik und Thermodynamik untersucht. Es können prozessbedingte Änderungen in den Produkten aufgezeigt und auf ein Reaktionsmodell übertragen werden. Auf Basis einer stöchiometrischen Bilanzierung kann die Dehydratisierung von LPM für Temperaturen von 180, 200, 220 und 240°C mit einer Monod-Funktion beschrieben werden. Die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit der Dehydratisierung kann mit den noch eliminierbaren Wasserstoff- und Sauerstoffkonzentration in der Kohle korreliert werden. Die Aktivierungsenergie beträgt 71,1 kJ mol^-1. Zur Kalorimetrie wird eine Messprozedur an einem Wärmestrom-DSC entwickelt. Entsprechende Messungen bestätigen den exothermen Charakter der HTC, wonach 1 g LPM (daf = trocken und aschefrei) -660 +- 3 J freisetzt. Eine theoretische Abschätzung der Reaktionswärme durch Massen- und Energiebilanzen überschätzt die gemessene Reaktionswärme um mehr als das Sechsfache. Erst die Berücksichtigung von volatilen Komponenten nähert die berechnete Reaktionswärme von -922 J g_daf^-1 dem Messwert an. Untersuchungen von Referenzbiomassen zeigen deutliche Unterschiede in den Wärmeprofilen und den resultierenden Reaktionswärmen (-841 bis -281 J g_daf^-1). Dabei wird die Reaktionswärme u. a. vom Sauerstoffgehalt im Edukt beeinflusst. Durch Mischen von Modellkomponenten kann ein dem LPM ähnliches Stoffgemisch erzeugt werden, dessen Reaktionswärme sich < 10 % von LPM unterscheidet. Insgesamt können der Prozessablauf und die Bildung von Reaktionswärme in dem entwickelten Reaktionsmodell aufeinander abgebildet werden., The applicability of the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is so far limited due to an insufficient process understanding. For this reason, biomass from landscape management (LPM) was investigated with respect to process flow, stoichiometry, kinetics and thermodynamics. Process dependent changes in the products can be transferred to a reaction model. Based on a stoichiometric balance, the dehydration of LPM can be described by a Monod-function for temperatures of 180, 200, 220 and 240°C. The rate of dehydration can be correlated to the still eliminable hydrogen and oxygen concentrations in the coal. The activation energy is 71,1 kJ mol^-1. For calorimetry, a new experimental setup at a heat flow DSC is developed. Measurements confirm the exothermic nature of HTC. For carbonization of LPM (daf = dry and ash free) the heat of reaction is about (-660 +-3 J g_daf^-1. A theoretical estimation of this value by mass and energy balances overestimated the heat of reaction more than sixfold. Considering volatile products of HTC, the calculated heat of reaction (-922 J g_daf^-1) is in the range of the measured value. Investigations of reference biomasses show significant differences in the thermal profiles and the resulting heat of reactions (-841 up to -281 J g_daf^-1) being influenced by the oxygen content of the reactant. A mixture of biomass model compounds shows a similar heat of reaction than real LPM (within 10 %). In summary, the process flow and the heat of reaction can be merged in the reaction modell.
