Abstract

This paper addresses the problem of automatic emotion recognition in the scope of the One-Minute Gradual-Emotional Behavior challenge (OMG-Emotion challenge). The underlying objective of the challenge is the automatic estimation of emotion expressions in the two-dimensional emotion representation space (i.e., arousal and valence). The adopted methodology is a weighted ensemble of several models from both video and text modalities. For video-based recognition, two different types of visual cues (i.e., face and facial landmarks) were considered to feed a multi-input deep neural network. Regarding the text modality, a sequential model based on a simple recurrent architecture was implemented. In addition, we also introduce a model based on high-level features in order to embed domain knowledge in the learning process. Experimental results on the OMG-Emotion validation set demonstrate the effectiveness of the implemented ensemble model as it clearly outperforms the current baseline methods.

9. Electrically conductive bacterial cellulose for tissue-engineered neural interfaces

Abstract

Bacterial cellulose (BC) with its high crystallinity, tensile strength, degree of polymerisation, and water holding capacity (98%) becomes increasingly attractive as 3D nanofibrillar material for biomedical applications. Such multi-scale fibrillary BC networks can be potentially functionalised with electrically conductive moieties to facilitate the conductive properties required for various smart biomedical devices, in particular, in the construction of bioelectronic neural interfaces. In this thesis, BC fibres are chemically modified with poly(4-vinylaniline) (PVAN) interlayer for further enhancement of electrical conductivity and cell viability of subsequent polyaniline (PANI) coatings as a bilayer grafted BC nanocomposite. This functional poly(4-vinylaniline)/polyaniline (PVAN/PANI) bilayer can be efficiently anchored onto BC fibrils through successive surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerisation and in situ chemical oxidative polymerisation. PVAN is found to have promoted the formation of a uniform PANI layer with 1D nanofiber- and nanorod-like supramolecular structures, with an overall augmentation of PANI yield, hence further improved electrical performance. Compositional and microstructural analysis reveals such a PVAN/PANI bilayer with a thickness up to ~2 µm on BC formed through a significant growth of PANI with rough surface morphology due to the insertion of PVAN, which has improved the functional properties of the BC nanocomposites. Successful impregnation of both layers onto BC fibrils was corroborated with systematic microstructural and chemical analysis. The solid-state electrical conductivity of such synthesised BC nanocomposites with PVAN interlayer reaches as high as (4.5±2.8)×10-2 S.cm-1 subject to the amounts of PVAN chemically embraced. Electrochemical examination evinces the switching in the electrochemical behaviour of BC/PVAN/PANI nanocomposites at -0.70/0.74 V (at 100 mV.s-1 scan rate) due to the existence of PANI, where the maximal electrical performance can be achieved at charge transfer resistance of as low as 21 Ω and capacitance of as high as 39 μF. Both electrochemical and mechanical properties can be tailored onto an incomplete BC dehydration, where a mathematical model is herein developed to predict BC water loss accordingly. BC/PVAN/PANI nanocomposites are thermally stable up to 200 ºC. Furthermore, further improvement of the electrical conductivity has been achieved through grafting Carbon Nano Tubes (CNTs) into the BC/PVAN/PANI nanocomposites, where the interactions between PANI and CNTs present new electrochemical characteristics with enhanced capacity. PANI/CNTs coatings with a nanorod-like morphology can promote the efficient ions diffusion and charge transfer, resulting in the increased electrical conductivity up to (1.0±0.3)×10-1 S.cm-1. An escalating amplification of the double charge capacity to ~54 mF of the CNTs grafted BC nanocomposites was also detected through electrochemical analysis. In addition, the thermal stability of CNTs grafted BC/PVAN/PANI nanocomposites are improved, and they become stable up to 234 ºC. Cytocompatibility tests conducted using two neuronal cell linages show non-cytotoxic effects for PC-12 Adh cells and SVZ neural stem cells, confirming cell viability that can be over 80 % and neuronal differentiation capability of the electrically functionalised BC-based nanocomposite membranes, which can induce neurites outgrowth up to 115±24 μm long. These voltage-sensible nanocomposites can hence interact with neural cells, thereby significantly stimulate specialised response. These findings pave the path to the new tissue engineered neural interfaces which embraces electronic functions into the tissue regeneration, to enable full functional neural tissue recovery.

Abstract

Neural progenitor cells (NPCs) are often used to study the subcellular mechanisms underlying differentiation into neurons in vitro. Works published to date have focused on the pathways that distinguish undifferentiated NPCs from mature neurons, neglecting the earlier and intermediate stages of this process. Current evidence suggests that mitochondria interaction with the ER is fundamental to a wide range of intracellular processes. However, it is not clear whether and how the mitochondria–ER interactions differ between NPCs and their differentiated counterparts. Here we take advantage of the widely used NPC line LUHMES to provide hints on the mitochondrial dynamic trait changes that occur during the first stage of their maturation into dopaminergic-like neurons. We observed that the morphology of mitochondria, their interaction with the ER, and the expression of several mitochondria–ER contact site resident proteins change, which suggests the potential contribution of mitochondria dynamics to NPC differentiation. Further studies will be needed to explore in depth these changes, and their functional outcomes, which may be relevant to the scientific community focusing on embryonic neurogenesis and developmental neurotoxicity. Abstract

Although true coral reefs have seldom been reported from the fossil record of the Cabo Verde Archipelago, many single fossil corals and coral colonies can be found reworked in tsunami deposits and in raised marine terraces onshore on these islands. This study provides the first detailed survey of fossil corals from 7 of the 10 islands of the archipelago, sampled from Pleistocene marine terraces and tsunami deposits. A total of 168 scleractinian corals were analyzed and identified to genus and/or species level. Thirteen taxa from the families Acroporidae, Dendrophylliidae, Faviidae, Pocilloporidae, Poritidae, and Rhizangiidae were identified. The zooxanthellate fossil corals found on the Cape Verde Archipelago likely migrated from the Caribbean to the West African coast, while azooxanthellate species likely originated from the Indo-Pacific. Differences between present-day coral assemblages and fossil assemblages are assumed to result from changing environmental factors. Abstract

Purpose To compare the academic performance of undergraduate students in physical education who studied exercise physiology before and after studying human physiology and investigate students’ perceptions of human physiology and exercise physiology courses. Methods This study included 311 undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Participants were divided into two groups: those who had previously attended and completed the human physiology course (group 1, n = 212, 68.2%) and those who had not previously attended or had attended but failed the human physiology course (group 2, n = 99, 31.8%). The prevalence ratio (PR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated using a Poisson regression model with a robust variance estimator. The second aim comprised 67 students with bachelor’s degrees in physical education who completed an electronic questionnaire about their perceptions of human physiology and exercise physiology curriculum. Results Compared with those who attended human physiology and passed, those who had not previously attended or had attended but failed the human physiology course have a higher PR of 2.37 (95% CI, 1.68–3.34) for failing exercise physiology. Regarding the students’ perceptions of human physiology and exercise physiology courses, most students reported that they were challenging (58.2% and 64.2%, respectively), but they also recognized the importance of these courses for professional practice (59.7% and 85.1%, respectively). Conclusion Human physiology should be considered a prerequisite for an undergraduate course leading to a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Furthermore, students considered human physiology and exercise physiology courses important yet challenging. Therefore, continuous student assessment is vital for improving the teaching–learning process.
