We have measured the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity of CuO nanoparticles (16 nm) from 2 K to 400 K using a Quantum Design Physical Properties Measurement System (PPMS). The magnetization curves, acquired at various field strengths from 0 Oe to 50 kOe, are similar to literature data of bulk and nanoscale CuO showing a minimum at about 150 K, an upturn as temperature approaches 0 K, and a broad maximum at high temperatures extending beyond 400 K. The heat capacity data between 200 K and 400 K show several broad peaks. The number of these peaks and the temperatures at which they occur differ significantly from the magnetic transitions known to exist in bulk CuO. To further investigate these transitions in nanoscale CuO, we performed temperature dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) at temperatures from 90 K to 700 K from which lattice parameters as a function of temperature were derived using a Rietveld refinement. Although no phase transitions were observed in these data, changes in the slopes of the lattice parameters are apparent at the transition temperatures observed in the heat capacity and susceptibility measurements. The various transitions in the heat capacity data are attributed to competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions caused by structural properties that are unique to nanophase CuO, and the temperature range of multiferroicity in nanoscale CuO is shown to extend to temperatures higher than those observed for bulk CuO. The heat capacity and temperature dependent XRD measurements are the first of their kind to be reported for CuO nanoparticles.

The location and function of dopants in metal oxide nanoparticles have been poorly characterized for many systems. We have performed heat capacity measurements, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) on 10 TiO2 nanoparticle samples that have different amounts of Al dopant to determine the location and function of the Al3+ cations. From the heat capacity data, lattice vacancies are observed to increase significantly with the addition of the Al dopant, suggesting Al3+ cations enter the TiO2 lattice and create vacancies due to the charge difference between Al3+ and Ti4+. The presence of gapped terms in fits of the low-temperature heat capacity data also suggests that small regions of short-range order are created within the TiO2 lattice. Entropies at T = 298.15 K were determined from the heat capacity data and show effects related to the entropy of mixing, suggesting that a solid solution of Al/TiO2 is formed. The thermodynamic properties of hydrated α-Fe2O3 (hematite) and Fe3O4 (magnetite) nanoparticles have been comprehensively assessed. In addition to 9 nm Fe3O4, three α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles samples of different sizes (11, 14, and 25 nm) and bulk α-Fe2O3 have been evaluated by inelastic neutron scattering methods. The contribution of the two-level magnetic spin flip transition to the heat capacity of the α-Fe2O3 particles has been determined. The isochoric heat capacity of the water confined on the surface of these two types of iron oxide particles have been calculated from their INS spectra, and is affected by the chemical composition of the underlying particle. Furthermore, the heat capacity and dynamics of the particle hydration layers appear to be influenced by a complex array of factors including particle size, water coverage, and possibly the magnetic state of the particle itself.

We report an efficient, general methodology for producing high-surface area metal oxide nanomaterials for a vast range of metal oxides, including at least one metal oxide nanomaterial from nearly every transition metal and semi-metal group in the periodic table (groups 3–4 and 6–15) as well as several from the lanthanide group (see Table 1). The method requires only 2–3 simple steps; a hydrated metal salt (usually a nitrate or chloride salt) is ground with bicarbonate (usually NH4HCO3) for 10–30 minutes to form a precursor that is then either untreated or rinsed before being calcined at relatively low temperatures (220–550 °C) for 1–3 hours. The method is thus similar to surfactant-free aqueous methods such as co-precipitation but is unique in that no solvents are added. The resulting “solvent-deficient” environment has interesting and unique consequences, including increased crystallinity of the products over other aqueous methods and a mesoporous nature in the inevitable agglomerates. The products are chemically pure and phase pure with crystallites generally 3–30 nm in average size that aggregate into high surface area, mesoporous agglomerates 50–300 nm in size that would be useful for catalyst and gas sensing applications. The versatility of products and efficiency of the method lend its unique potential for improving the industrial viability of a broad family of useful metal oxide nanomaterials. In this paper, we outline the methodology of the solvent-deficient method using our understanding of its mechanism, and we describe the range and quality of nanomaterials it has produced thus far.

Porous metal oxide nanoparticles is a new class of material of great scientific and technological importance with a wide range of applications. In this article, we briefly review the synthetic methods and thermodynamic properties of such materials. We compare and summarize common synthetic routes of such materials including solid-state, solution- phase (co-precipitation, sol-gel, microemulsion, solvothermal/hydrothermal, non-aqueous), and vapor-phase methods. As for the thermodynamics of porous metal oxide nanoparticles, we review experimental determinations, mainly by calorime- try, on surface and interfaces energetics. The interplay among particle size, surface area, morphology, surface stabilizer, phase stability, and redox potentials is discussed.

The important variables in the synthesis of stable, high surface area, aluminum-modified anatase TiO2 catalyst supports were identified and optimized using statistically designed experiments (DOEs). The first DOE examined ten variables at two levels and a second DOE studied eight variables at three levels. Equations were developed to predict the conditions to obtain the highest surface area and pore volume at the desired pore diameter and predict the pore diameter range that may be obtained. Confirmation trials closely matched predicted surface areas, pore volumes, and pore diameters in all but one trial. Rinsing order (before or after calcination) was the most significant factor. Other important factors were calcination temperature, mol% aluminum, and water addition speed. The results of this study demonstrate (a) the power of DOEs in identifying and controlling synthesis variables in relatively few experiments and (b) how analysis of factor effects can provide insight into the formation mechanism.

The structures of Al-modified anatase TiO2 supports were analyzed using traditional analysis techniques of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and N2 sorption as well as X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy, 27Al magic-angle spinning NMR, and low-temperature heat capacity. The combined results from these characterizations reveal that the Al dopant is incorporated either on the surface or in vacancies depending on the details of the synthetic method used. Alumina incorporated on the surface stabilizes TiO2 by lowering the surface energy of anatase and stabilizing planes with high surface energy that would otherwise join to achieve a reduced surface energy. On the other hand, Al incorporated in TiO2 vacancies stabilizes the structure through increasing lattice strain and limiting mass transport necessary for grain growth. The effects of dopants Al, La, Si, and Zr on the stability, surface area, and porosity of anatase were investigated. Anatase materials stabilized with 0–14 mol% La, Si, Zr, or 0–85 mol% Al were studied. Materials were characterized using XRD, TEM and N 2 adsorption. Results show that (1) dopants increased the surface area and thermal stability of anatase through structural modifications and grain growth inhibition, (2) due to structural modifications it was important to select the appropriate hysteresis branch for pore diameter calculations, and (3) a thorough analysis of N 2 adsorption and TEM data provided additional insight into how stabilizing agents affected the mesoporous structure. Stabilized titanias produced by this method demonstrated equivalent or higher thermal stability and surface area compared with pure anatase and previously reported materials after treatment at 400 °C and 700 °C including 22 mol% Al–TiO 2 calcined at 400 °C which had a surface area of 479 ± 39 m 2 /g, a pore volume of 0.46 ± 0.04 cm 3 /g, and a pore diameter of 2.9 ± 0.2 nm.

A new stationary phase for reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP HPLC) was created by coating spherical 3 μm carbon core particles in a layer-by-layer (LbL) fashion with poly(allylamine) (PAAm) and nanodiamond. Unfunctionalized core carbon particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), and Raman spectroscopy. After LbL of PAAm and nanodiamond, which yields ca. 4 μm core-shell particles, the particles were simultaneously functionalized and cross-linked using a mixture of 1,2-epoxyoctadecane and 1,2,7,8-diepoxyoctane to obtain a mechanically stable C(18)/C(8) bonded outer layer. Core-shell particles were characterized by SEM, and their surface area, pore diameter, and volume were determined using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. Short stainless steel columns (30 × 4.6 mm i.d.) were packed and the corresponding van Deemter plots obtained. The Supporting Information contains a MATLAB program used to fit the van Deemter data. The retentions of a suite of analytes were investigated on a conventional HPLC at various organic solvent compositions, pH values of mobile phases, including extreme pH values, and column temperatures. At 60 °C, a chromatogram of 2,6-diisopropylphenol showed 71,500 plates/m (N/m). Chromatograms obtained under acidic conditions (pH 2.7) of a mixture of acetaminophen, diazepam, and 2,6-diisopropylphenol and a mixture of phenol, 4-methylphenol, 2-chlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol, 4-bromophenol, and 1-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol are presented. Retention of amitriptyline, cholesterol, and diazinon at temperatures ranging from 35 to 80 °C and at pH 11.3 is reported. A series of five basic drugs was also separated at this pH. The stationary phase exhibits considerable hydrolytic stability at high pH (11.3) and even pH 13 over extended periods of time. An analysis run on a UHPLC with a "sandwich" injection appeared to reduce extra column band broadening and gave best efficiencies of 110,000-120,000 N/m.

Traditional Screening Designs, such as resolution III 2k-p fractional factorials are used routinely in the initial stages of process development. These designs are used to determine which process variables have the largest effect on process outcomes. Once a screening design is complete and the data are analysed, follow-up experiments are normally required in order to develop useful prediction equations involving the important variables and to identify the optimal process operating conditions. Recently developed definitive screening designs allow researchers to identify important variables and optimum process conditions after one set of experiments, eliminating the need for follow-up experiments. This leads to the question: What is now the role of traditional and definitive screening designs in process optimisation? We share our insights gained from using both of these designs in developing a process to produce catalyst support material to shed light on these questions.

Porous graphitic carbon (PGC) particles were functionalized/passivated in situ in packed beds at elevated temperature with neat di- tert -amylperoxide (DTAP) in a column oven. The performance of these particles for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was assayed before and after this chemistry with the following analytes: benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, n -propyl benzene, n -butyl benzene, p -xylene, phenol, 4-methylphenol, phenetole, 3,5-xylenol, and anisole. After the first functionalization/passivation, the retention factors, k , of these compounds decreased by about 5% and the number of theoretical plates ( N ) increased by ca. 15%. These values of k then remained roughly constant after a second functionalization/passivation but a further increase in N was noticed. In addition, after each of the reactions, the peak asymmetries decreased by ca. 15%, for a total of ca. 30%. The columns were then subjected twice to methanol at 100 °C for 5 h at 1 mL/min. After these stability tests, the values of k remained roughly constant, the number of plates increased, which is favorable, and the asymmetries rose and then declined, where they remained below the initial values for the unfunctionalized columns. Functionalized and unfunctionalized particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and BET measurements, which showed no difference between the functionalized and unfunctionalized materials, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), where ToF-SIMS suggested some chemical differences between the functionalized and unfunctionalized materials. In particular ToF-SIMS suggested that the expected five-carbon fragments from DTAP exist at higher concentrations on DTAP-functionalized PGC. First principle calculations on model graphitic surfaces suggest that the first addition of a DTAP radical to the surface proceeds in an approximately isothermal or slightly favorable fashion, but that subsequent DTAP additions are then increasingly thermodynamically favorable. Thus, this analysis suggests that the direct functionalization/passivation of PGC with DTAP is plausible. Chemometric analyses of the chromatographic and ToF-SIMS data are also presented.

Most of us heard the story of the blind men and the elephant as children. In this old tale from India each man in a group of blind men touches a different part of an elephant. Each walks away with a different experience and subsequently argues that the elephant is like a spear (the tusk), a rope (the tail), a wall (the flank), etc. Only the combination of their stories would have provided a complete, or at least more complete, picture of what an elephant really is.

The effects of iron catalyst thickness on the fabrication and performance of microfabricated, binder-free, carbon nanotube (CNT)-templated, thin layer chromatography (TLC) plates are demonstrated. The iron catalyst was deposited at thicknesses ranging from 4 to 18 nm in increments of 2 nm. Its thickness plays a key role in governing the integrity and separation capabilities of microfabricated TLC plates, as determined using a test dye mixture. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy show that smaller and more numerous catalyst nanoparticles are formed from thinner Fe layers, which in turn govern the diameters and densities of the CNTs. The average diameter of the Fe nanoparticles, Dp, is approximately six times the initial Fe film thickness, tFe: Dp ≈ 6tFe. After deposition of relatively thick silicon layers on CNTs made with different Fe thicknesses, followed by oxidation, all of the resulting CNT-templated SiO2 wires had nearly the same diameter. We present low temperature (11 K) inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data on four hydrated nanoparticle systems: 10 nm CoO·0.10H(2)O (1), 16 nm Co(3)O(4)·0.40H(2)O (2), 25 nm Co(3)O(4)·0.30H(2)O (3) and 40 nm Co(3)O(4)·0.026H(2)O (4). The vibrational densities of states were obtained for all samples and from these the isochoric heat capacity and vibrational energy for the hydration layers confined to the surfaces of these nanoparticle systems have been elucidated. The results show that water on the surface of CoO nanoparticles is more tightly bound than water confined to the surface of Co(3)O(4), and this is reflected in the reduced heat capacity and vibrational entropy for water on CoO relative to water on Co(3)O(4) nanoparticles. This supports the trend, seen previously, for water to be more tightly bound in materials with higher surface energies. The INS spectra for the antiferromagnetic Co(3)O(4) particles (2-4) also show sharp and intense magnetic excitation peaks at 5 meV, and from this the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity of Co(3)O(4) nanoparticles has been calculated; this represents the first example of use of INS data for determining the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity of any magnetic nanoparticle system.
