The escalating demand for innovative, multifunctional, and advanced composite structures stems from the pressing concerns related to cost efficiency and environmental impact, alongside interest in the prefabrication methods within the construction industry. This paper advances a pioneering approach by proposing the utilization of high-strength bundle-bar-filled circular hollow sections (BBFC) as columns. In this method, a bundle comprising high-strength reinforcing bars with an impressive yield strength of 670 N/mm² is strategically placed within a steel tube, varying in related-slenderness values from 0.86 to 2.44. Subsequent to this arrangement, the bundle undergoes grouting with mortar, resulting in the formation of the BBFCs. The composition of the bundle is a critical aspect, with different configurations featuring 1, 3, 7, and 19 high-strength bars. Given the intricacies involved in the fabrication process, this paper meticulously outlines the unique techniques employed to successfully manufacture the BBFCs. To comprehensively evaluate the performance of these innovative columns, a series of ten real-scale tests were conducted. These tests look at various aspects, including capacity, flexural stiffness, deflection, and strain response. In addition to experimental validation, finite element analysis was applied, not only to corroborate the empirical findings but also to lay the foundation for future parametric studies. These subsequent investigations aim to explore and understand the influence of different geometric and material features on the structural behaviour of this innovative composite column, thereby contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field. • This study unveils state-of-the-art composite column design and their test results. • Bundle-bar columns offer cost-efficiency and structural robustness. • Bundle-bar columns are recommended for mid- to high-rise buildings. • The study highlights the importance of deflection control measures. • Promising structural and economic advantages pave the way for future design. A METland is an innovative treatment wetland (TW) that relies on the stimulation of electroactive bacteria (EAB) to enhance the degradation of pollutants. The METland is designed in a short-circuit mode (in the absence of an external circuit) using an electroconductive bed capable of accepting electrons from the microbial metabolism of pollutants. Although METlands are proven to be highly efficient in removing organic pollutants, the study of in situ EAB activity in full-scale systems is a challenge due to the absence of a two-electrode configuration. For the first time, four independent full-scale METland systems were tested for the removal of organic pollutants and nutrients, establishing a correlation with the electroactive response generated by the presence of EAB. The removal efficiency of the systems was enhanced by plants and mixed oxic–anoxic conditions, with an average removal of 56 g of chemical oxygen demand (COD) mbed material–3 day–1 and 2 g of total nitrogen (TN) mbed material–3 day–1 for Ørby 2 (partially saturated system). The estimated electron current density (J) provides evidence of the presence of EAB and its relationship with the removal of organic matter. The tested METland systems reached the max. values of 188.14 mA m–2 (planted system; IMDEA 1), 223.84 mA m–2 (non-planted system; IMDEA 2), 125.96 mA m–2 (full saturated system; Ørby 1), and 123.01 mA m–2 (partially saturated system; Ørby 2). These electron flow values were remarkable for systems that were not designed for energy harvesting and unequivocally show how electrons circulate even in the absence of a two-electrode system. The relation between organic load rate (OLR) at the inlet and coulombic efficiency (CE; %) showed a decreasing trend, with values ranging from 8.8 to 53% (OLR from 2.0 to 16.4 g COD m–2 day–1) for IMDEA systems and from 0.8 to 2.5% (OLR from 41.9 to 45.6 g COD m–2 day–1) for Ørby systems. This pattern denotes that the treatment of complex mixtures such as real wastewater with high and variable OLR should not necessarily result in high CE values. The consistent and accurate prediction of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in an infrared suppression (IRS) device is challenging due to the complex nature of the flow features. The cool ambient air intake and subsequent mixing of hot exhaust gas from the engine in the cargo/naval ships are done inside the IRS system. The objective is to propose correlations for mass entrainment and outlet temperature for the IRS device with conical funnels. The mass intake rate and funnel exit temperature are determined by a set of relevant operating and geometric parameters, such as Reynolds number, nozzle exhaust temperature, the number of funnels, and funnel overlap. In this study, the funnel walls are conducting with finite wall thickness, and the surface radiation is taken into consideration. Numerical simulations are performed for the real-scale IRS unit by solving the mass, momentum, energy, and radiation equations in the computational domain surrounding the system. Nonlinear regression analysis of the data is carried out using the Levenberg and Marquest (L-M) method to achieve an empirical correlation of mass intake ratio and outlet temperature ratio. The proposed correlation for mass intake ratio is valid within ±6%, and that of outlet temperature is valid within ±5% of the numerical data. The valid ranges for correlations are 6×105≤ nozzle Reynolds number ≤3×106⁠; 2 ≤ number of funnel ≤ 5; -0.325 ≤ funnel-overlapping height ≤ 0.25; and 1.33 ≤ nozzle exit temperature ≤ 2. The FEBEX experiment, a full-scale, high-level radioactivewaste repository test, ran for ~18 years and hence is the longest-running disposal test to date. The test consisted of a heater emplaced in an envelope of compacted bentonite at the Grimsel test site, Switzerland. Thewater content of the bentonite was somewhat lower near the heater and increased towards the granite. This phenomenon probably led to gradients in the exchangeable cation population at various locations within the bentonite buffer. The cement (shotcrete) bentonite interface of one blockwas characterized by a thin (0.1-1.0 mm) reaction zone in which bentonite constituents, carbonates and sulfates occurred. Cation exchange and a slight decrease of the cation exchange capacitywere observed near the heater. Oxic corrosionwas observed predominantly at the bentonite/steel liner interfaces, pointing towards a role of air entrapped between the liner and heater during emplacement. At the liner surface, intimate intergrowth of bentonite constituents, metal and corrosion products was observed. At the face of the heater, the bentonite blockswere in direct contact with the heater surface without any signs of metal corrosion. Instead, a significant increase in the Mg content was recorded, which is in agreement with previous large-scale disposal tests. The FEBEX experiment proved that the Mg increase and corrosion were independent processes. The increase in Mg may be explained by the formation of trioctahedral domains or the precipitation of neoformed silicates. For the first time, however, brucite was identified as an additional phase that formed at the metal/bentonite interface, pointing towards a special role for Mg mobility in the bentonite barrier. The highly viscous liquid (glycerin) sloshing is investigated numerically in this study. The full-scale membrane-type tank is considered. The numerical investigation is performed by applying a two-phase numerical model based on the spatially averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Firstly, the numerical model is validated against the available numerical model and a self-conducted experiment then is applied to systematically investigate the full-scale sloshing. In this study, two filling levels (50% and 70% of the tank height) are considered. The fluid kinematic viscosity is fixed at a value being 6.0 × 10−5 m2/s with comparative value to that of the crude oil. A wide range of forcing periods varying from 8.0 s to 12.0 s are used to identify the response process of pressures as well as free surface displacements. The pressures are analyzed along with breaking free surface snapshots and corresponding pressure distributions. The slamming effects are also demonstrated. Finally, the frequency response is further identified by the fast Fourier transformation technology.

Abstract: Given a pattern string P and a text string T, the one-dimensional real-scale pattern matching problem is to ask for all matched positions in T at which P occurs for some real scales ⩾1. The real-scale indexing problem, which is derived from the real-scale matching problem, aims to preprocess T, so that all positions of scaled P in T can be answered efficiently. In this paper, we propose an improved algorithm for the real-scale indexing problem. For constant-sized alphabets, our preprocessing takes time and space, achieving the answering time , where denotes the number of matched positions and . For the case of large-sized alphabets, our preprocessing can still be implemented with time and space, while the answering time is slightly increased to . Compared to Wangʼs preprocessing algorithm with time, our new indexing algorithm is a significant improvement. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The precise flow and heat transfer aspects in an infrared suppression (IRS) device are challenging because of the complicated flow features. The suction of cold ambient air and subsequent mixing with the hot exhaust gas from the turbine in cargo/naval ships happens in the IRS device. In the present research, the thermo-fluid characteristics of a two-dimensional axisymmetric IRS system consisting of conical funnels stacked one above the other are meant to study. Numerical simulations are performed for the real-scale IRS unit by solving the equations of mass, momentum, energy, and radiation in the computational domain surrounding the IRS device. In this study, the effect of conducting funnel walls with surface radiation is considered. The impact of the number of funnels on mass intake and the device outlet temperature is analyzed. The results show that the maximum air intake and minimum outlet temperature can be achieved using five funnels. The mass intake and device outlet temperature are also affected by funnel-overlapping and nozzle-overlapping. The maximum air intake and minimum outlet temperature are obtained by zero funnel-overlapping and zero nozzle-overlapping conditions. When the adiabatic funnel is replaced by conducting funnels with surface radiation, the increment in the mass intake and decrement in outlet temperature is observed.
