Athletes are at high risk of dehydration, fatigue, and cardiac disorders due to extreme performance in often harsh environments. Despite advancements in sports training protocols, there is an urgent need for a non‐invasive system capable of comprehensive health monitoring. Although a few existing wearables measure athlete's performance, they are limited by a single function, rigidity, bulkiness, and required straps and adhesives. Here, an all‐in‐one, multi‐sensor integrated wearable system utilizing a set of nanomembrane soft sensors and electronics, enabling wireless, real‐time, continuous monitoring of saliva osmolality, skin temperature, and heart functions is introduced. This system, using a soft patch and a sensor‐integrated mouthguard, provides comprehensive monitoring of an athlete's hydration and physiological stress levels. A validation study in detecting real‐time physiological levels shows the device's performance in capturing moments (400–500 s) of synchronized acute elevation in dehydration (350%) and physiological strain (175%) during field training sessions. Demonstration with a few human subjects highlights the system's capability to detect early signs of health abnormality, thus improving the healthcare of sports athletes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The production of cheap energy from the sun will be a major research objective in the coming years. Major strides must be made in solar cell efficiency, including increasing absorbance efficiency of a cell by etching or texturing. In order to increase the absorbance efficiency of solar cells, we have developed a three-dimensional solar cell structure by depositing a cadmium telluride thin film overtop carbon nanotube towers. These towers act as both a scaffolding and an electrical interconnect. Multiple photon interactions as they reflect between these towers increase the absorption efficiency. We have developed a theoretical model and computer simulation to maximize the number of photon interactions due to the geometrical characteristics of the system (aspect ratio, spacing, size, shape, etc.). Simulated modeling has shown that by optimization of parameters, a three-dimensional cell can obtain up to a 300% increase in power production over traditional cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Technology opportunities analysis (TOA) can support policy-makers or managers in making strategic technical decisions so as to enhance their technological innovation capability and international competitiveness. This paper presents a multi-level framework to support and systematically identify technological opportunities. Patent data as a key component of technology innovation are used to enable TOA within the framework in the present research. At the research and development (R&D) level, we anticipate the directions of technology development based on technology morphology. Countries’ development emphases can also be investigated in order to help identify their R&D strengths and weaknesses and to seek promising development pathways. At the level of competition, we devise the assignee-technology analysis to obtain insight into competitive participants’ technical emphases and intents. It is also used to explore possible collaboration opportunities among them. At the market level, we apply patent family analysis to understand countries’ target markets and to assess prospects for the commercialisation of their technology. We pursue TOA to explore China's opportunities and challenges in dye-sensitised solar cells. The empirical case analysis supports the effectiveness of the TOA model.
