3. Use of Simulations to Predict Lifeboat Survivability in Extreme Waves and the Effectiveness of Coxswain Performed Actions.

Abstract

Simulations were used to investigate the performance of lifeboats in high sea states using a virtual wave tank. Numerical simulations were performed in regular and irregular waves to study launch performance in extreme weather conditions. Limitations in launch equipment and the role of the timing of coxswains' actions were investigated. The study indicated that the lifeboat may not be able to successfully launch when significant wave heights are above 8 m and the lifeboat is launched near the trough of a wave. High initial setback and continuous wave forces result in the vessel being unable to clear away from the launch platform. As wave heights increase, the amount of setback and time to exit the launch area increases. Over 35% of launches resulted in the lifeboat being unable to clear from the launch area when significant wave heights were 10 m or above. The study also identified that delay in completion of actions performed by the coxswain, such as releasing the lifeboat hooks and applying throttle, can increase setback and time to exit the launch area. 6. Lower Limb Joint Reaction Forces and Moments Calculations for a 'Dabke Jump': Application of 3D Inverse Dynamics Technique

Abstract

The study involves applying the inverse dynamics to calculate the 3-dimensional (3D) reaction forces and moments at the lower limbs namely: hip, knee, and ankle joints. The study is specific to performing the Lebanese folkloric dance known as the “Dabke jump”. The aim is to compare the impact forces generated at the three joints. Also envisioned is to contrast the forces generated for a male (63 Kg) and a female (50.4 kg) dancer (barefoot and while she wears 8.5 cm high heels). The experimental part of the study consists of measuring position data of the right lower limb of the participant when performing the jump. All at once, the reaction forces generated at the impact are synchronously measured. The position data are obtained using the OptiTrack™ motion capture system. The ground reaction forces are measured using the AMTI force plate. Using kinematics analysis in conjunction with inverse dynamics, the filtered and fitted experimental data are then imported into MATLAB® to obtain a table containing all the internal forces and moments at each joint (ankle, knee, and hip joints) as function of time. Next, the results are plotted and compared. Force and moment data are analyzed using R Project for statistical computing software. The boxplot technique is used to identify the presence of outliers. Using both MannWhitney and Krustkal Wallis tests, all joint reaction forces and moments in three dimensions are analyzed, at different time intervals to instantaneously identify the prominent effect on each joint. It is found that the largest impact force is generated at the ankle joint for both subjects. For the male participant, the impact maximum vertical force measured at the ankle is about 2.2 of body weight (BW). For the female participant, a maximum vertical force of 1.84 BW is recorded both barefoot and with heals. The forces and moments obtained for this male individual are larger than those obtained for this female individual. Moreover, for the female participant the vertical forces obtained for all joints when wearing an 8.5 cm high heel are found to be lower than those obtained when she is barefoot. This is most notably recorded at the hip joint where a maximum decrease of 21.2% is observed. This finding suggests that when a dancer performs the “Dabke jump”, wearing an appropriate heel of suitable height will decrease the vertical impact forces on the lower limb joints and decrease the risk of injuries.

Abstract

Valproic acid, atorvastatin and pioglitazone belong to different therapeutic drug classes and exhibit biological activities that are capable of interfering with cancer development. In this study, we examined the anticancer synergistic effects of these three drugs in experimental models in vitro and in vivo. Cytotoxic activity was determined against K562, NCI-H292 and HEp-2 lines cells. The Ehrlich carcinoma was used as in vivo model. Atorvastatin associated with pioglitazone, presented cytotoxicity against NCI-H292 cells with IC50 value 3.75 µg/ml. The ultra-structural analysis showed that the atorvastatin in combination with pioglitazone induced apoptosis in 66.3% of the cells. Treatment with either valproic acid or valproic acid + atorvastatin + pioglitazone presented cytotoxicity in Ehrlich carcinoma cells, with IC50 values equal to 10.8 and 11.4 µg/ml, respectively. In evaluation of antitumor effects in vivo it was observed that valproic acid or the atorvastatin + pioglitazone induced tumor inhibition of 60.2 and 64.9%, respectively. However, histopathology analysis suggests that the liver and kidneys are affected by both treatments. In conclusion, the data indicate that atorvastatin + pioglitazone present synergistic anticancer effect in lung cancer cells and solid tumours. Abstract

Restoration of Atlantic Forests is receiving increasing attention because of its role in both biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration for global climate change mitigation. This study was carried out in an Atlantic Forest restoration project in the south-central region of Sã o Paulo State ??Brazil to develop allometric equations to estimate tree biomass of indigenous tree species in mixed plantations. Above and below-ground biomass (AGB and BGB, respectively), stem diameter (DBH: diameter at 1.3 m height), tree height (H: total height) and specific wood density (WD) were measured for 60 trees of 19 species. Different biomass equations (linear and nonlinear-transformed) were adjusted to estimate AGB and BGB as a function of DBH, H and WD. For estimating AGB and BGB, the linear biomass equation models were the least accurate. The transformed nonlinear biomass equation that used log DBH2, log H and log WD as predictor variables were the most accurate for AGB and the transformed nonlinear biomass equations that used log DBH2*WD as predictor variables were the most accurate for BGB. It is concluded that these adjusted equations can be used to estimate the AGB and BGB in areas of the studied project. The adjusted equations can be recommended for use elsewhere in the region for forest stands of similar age, tree size ranges, species composition and site characteristics.

This paper describes a series of experiments conducted to characterize cermet coatings using conventional ultrasonic and eddy current techniques as well as an ultrasonic leaky surface wave method. The results demonstrate the ability of these techniques to detect the presence of artificial defects on the surface or beneath the surface of the coating. In addition, ultrasonic tests in particular ultrasonic leaky surface waves demonstrate the ability to detect the presence of manufacturing flaws. Essential oils from savory (Satureja hortensis), lavandin (Lavandula hybrida), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), peppermint (Mentha × piperita), oregano (Origanum vulgare), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), and thyme (Thymus vulgaris) were tested for antimicrobial activities against Paenibacillus larvae, the causal agent of American Foulbrood Disease (AFB) of honey bees. Trials for determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of these oils revealed that lemon grass and thyme were the most effective with MIC values between 50 to 100 $mUl/liter and 100 to 150μl/liter, respectively, in tests with 8 Paenibacillus larvae strains from different Argentinean geographical regions. The findings indicate that lemon grass and thyme oils could be used as effective inhibitors of AFB in honey bee colonies. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

ABSTRACTDNA motifs containing unmethylated CpG dinucleotides within the context of certain flanking sequences enhance both innate and antigen-specific immune responses, due in part to the enhanced production of Th1-type cytokines. Here we explored the ability of CpG-containing oligodeoxynucleotides combined with recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) to induce Th1 responses in mice that are transgenic for this antigen and that represent a model for asymptomatic hepatitis B virus chronic carriers. This was compared to hepatitis B virus-specific DNA-mediated immunization, which we have previously shown to induce the clearance of the transgene expression product and the down-regulation of hepatitis B virus mRNA in this transgenic mouse lineage. In control nontransgenic C57BL/6 mice, three immunizations with HBsAg and CpG triggered the production of anti-HBs antibodies and of HBs-specific T cells that secrete gamma interferon but do not display any HBsAg-specific cytotoxic activity. In the HBsAg-transgenic mice, immunization with HBsAg and CpG oligodeoxynucleotides, but not with CpG alone, induced the clearance of HBsAg circulating in the sera, with a concomitant appearance of specific antibodies, and was able to regulate the hepatitis B virus mRNA constitutively expressed in the liver. Finally, adoptive transfer experiments with CD8+T cells primed in C57BL/6 mice with HBsAg and CpG oligodeoxynucleotide-based immunization show that these cells were able to partially control transgene expression in the liver and to clear the HBsAg from the sera of recipient transgenic mice without an antibody requirement. CpG oligodeoxynucleotides motifs combined with HBsAg could therefore represent a potential therapeutic approach with which to treat chronically infected patients.

Abstract

Educational inclusion involves not leaving anyone out of the educational spaces, in this case, out of the university; it implies the challenge of building a university for everyone. The first point we would like to analyse here is the following: if the university is public and it has open and free access, why, however, is it not for everyone? In recent years, 'inclusion' is both the distinctive sign of a series of state policies that promote higher education as a right, as well as the focus of an ongoing academic debate. This debate about inclusion has been the topic that brought us together and made us come up with the recent investigation project on which we are currently working on1. In this paper, we will share how we are exploring the inclusion circumstances -how they occur, how they work, their effects, their difficulties-in their daily dimension and from the experiences of students and teachers of National University of Córdoba, focusing on the latter. We will recover some educators' voices that put into evidence that inclusion has become an everyday problem within the classroom, where they practice different (and sometimes contradictory) strategies.
