3. Enhanced Photodegradation of Acetaminophen Using Efficient ZnO-NiO Nanofibers.

Abstract

The increasing presence of pharmaceutical pollutants, such as acetaminophen, in water bodies poses a significant environmental challenge due to their persistence and potential toxicity. This study investigated the enhanced photodegradation of acetaminophen using ZnO-NiO nanofibers as superior photocatalysts. The nanofibers synthesized with varying NiO contents (designated as ZN0.5, ZN1, ZN1.5, and ZN2), were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman, FTIR, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) to elucidate their structural, morphological, and optical properties. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the nanofibers exhibit high thermal stability, with major weight loss attributed to the decomposition of the polymer matrix and residual organics. The BET analysis revealed that the specific surface area remains stable after increasing the NiO content up to a certain ratio. This stability correlates with the enhanced photocatalytic performance due to increased light absorption and improved charge separation. The diffuse reflectance spectra and Kubelka–Munk plots demonstrated a reduction in bandgap energy with higher NiO content, facilitating greater visible light absorption. Photocatalytic experiments under visible light irradiation, in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), showed that the ZN1.5 nanofibers achieved the highest acetaminophen degradation rate, i.e., 92%, within 3 h. Mechanistic studies, supported by radical trapping experiments, revealed that the improved photocatalytic efficiency is due to the synergistic effects of ZnO and NiO heterojunctions, which enhance charge separation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. This research highlights the potential of ZnO-NiO nanofibers as effective photocatalysts for the degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants. The findings demonstrate that optimizing the composition and structure of nanofibers can significantly improve their environmental remediation capabilities, providing a promising solution for sustainable water treatment. Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate that highly oriented c-axis aluminium scandium nitride (AlScN) piezoelectric thin films can be deposited via microwave plasma-assisted reactive high power impulse magnetron sputtering (MAR-HiPIMS), without the necessity of substrate heating. A combination of in situ plasma diagnostics, i.e. time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ToF-MS), modified quartz crystal microbalance (m-QCM), and magnetic field measurements allowed to optimise the deposition conditions, in turn maximising the nitrogen supply and ionic flux at the substrate region, while maintaining stable discharge conditions. The AlScN thin films synthesised in this study were deposited as chemically gradient coatings with varying levels of scandium doping, and were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Obtaining highly textured films was made possible with the addition of microwave plasma to the optimised HiPIMS discharge, where the wurtzite AlScN films (with up to 20 at. % Sc) exhibited a stronger texture in the (0002) orientation compared to films prepared without microwave plasma. Additionally, the use of a microwave plasma led to a significant decrease in oxygen content in the films and increase in nitrogen content, ensuring stoichiometric compositions. Based on the results mentioned above, it is expected that the AlScN thin films fabricated via MAR-HiPIMS would exhibit a strong piezoelectric response.

11. Superior Photocatalytic Activity of BaO@Ag 3 PO 4 Nanocomposite for Dual Function Degradation of Methylene Blue and Hydrogen Production under Visible Light Irradiation.

Abstract

The current work focuses on the photo degradation of organic pollutants, particularly methylene blue (MB) dye, and the production of hydrogen as green energy using a composite of silver phosphate Ag3PO4 (AP) and barium oxide/silver phosphate BaO@Ag3PO4 (APB) as a photocatalyst. This composite was successfully synthesized using a chemical co-precipitation approach. The physicochemical properties of the obtained samples were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis/DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectrophotometry. From XRD, the average crystallite sizes of AP and APB are 39.1 and 46 nm, respectively, with a homogeneous morphology detected by SEM. UV and PL experiments showed that the compound is active under visible light, with an improvement in the lifetimes of the electrons and the holes in the presence of BaO with Ag3PO4. The as-synthesized APB photocatalyst sample showed a remarkably high degradation efficiency of MB (20 ppm, 50 mL) of around 94%, with a hydrogen production yield of around 7538 μmol/(h·g), after 120 min of illumination, which is greater than the degradation efficiency of the AP photocatalyst sample, which was about 88%. The high photodegradation efficiency was attributed to the electronic promotion effect of the BaO particles. The APB composite demonstrated an increased photocatalytic performance in effectively degrading an organic dye (MB) with no secondary pollutants when exposed to visible light irradiation. Abstract

International audience; Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasmas are used for a wide range of applications. Recently efforts have been made to couple an aerosol injection of liquid precursor(s) with atmospheric plasmas in order to elaborated thin films. The dispersion of liquid droplets and their interaction with the plasma and/or the post-discharge lead to different issues. In this study, a non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma torch from AcXys Plasma Technologies is used. This process offers an easy and robust solution to generate low temperature post-discharge in air or nitrogen. It is suitable for thin film deposition on flat or 3D complex substrates for in-line production. The influence of discharge and process parameters (gas process, gas and precursor flow rates, discharge power, distance between nozzle and substrate ...) on the thin film properties are investigated. The shape and velocity of the droplets are obtained by rapid imaging the aerosol. Morphology and roughness of the coatings determined by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) are discussed as well as the images obtained from Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The thin film properties can be tailored by both the aerosol characteristics and the plasma process parameters. Dense thin films or porous films with high roughness can be elaborated from the same precursor depending on the process parameters. The comprehension of these phenomena, through further investigation, can improve the optimization of aerosol-assisted plasma.

Abstract

International audience; In this work, plasma discharge has been generated from pure HMDSO precursor in low frequency reactor. It has been observed that a cloud of Nanoparticles could be formed in a plasma discharge for some deposition parameters such as discharge power, time and pressure. Discharge signal analysis have been used in order to investigate the effect of deposition parameters on the nanoparticles growth. The study of discharge signal analysis shows that the pulse frequency is strongly related to plasma composition. Their value shifted from about 170 Hz to 250 Hz according to deposited parameters. This shift has been attributed to the nanoparticles formation in the plasma reactor. On the other hand, Nanoparticles embedded in thin films have been characterized by EDX and FTIR spectroscopy in order to reveal the NP’s composition.

Abstract

In this paper, homogeneous and dense silicon-based coatings have been deposited from hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO: [Si.sub.2]O[(C[H.sub.3]).sub.6]) on patterned silicium in a Townsend dielectric barrier discharge operating at atmospheric pressure. A brief description of the physical mechanisms ruling the step coverage is first described, followed by a description of the atmospheric pressure plasma process used. The step coverage is discussed with regard to the aspect ratio of the patterned wafers. Coatings deposited in and after the discharge region have also been characterized to understand the influence of plasma activation. In order to understand the experimental results, numerical simulations have been performed using a simplified reactive transport model. These results provide information and first general insight on the physical mechanisms ruling the conformity of silicon-based films deposited with this technique. Abstract

Binary composite WS2/TiO2 nanofibers (WTN) were elaborated by electrospinning technique. The photocatalytic efficiency of the binary nanofibers was changed via different ratios between WS2 and TiO2. The structural, morphological and optical properties of the prepared nanofibers were evaluated by Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis/DRS), respectively. The prepared nanofibers showed a remarkable performance in photocatalytic efficiency of phenol compound degradation under visible light. WTN nanofibers showed superior photocatalytic activity (83%) and high stability of several cycles under visible light. Therefore, WS2/TiO2 nanofibers have great prospects for the treatment of wastewater from toxic organic contamination due to their excellent photocatalytic performance reusability and recyclability. The oral route of exposure has been poorly explored, despite the presence of a fraction of nanosized particles in certain food additives/supplements and the incorporation of such particles into packaging in contact with foods. After their ingestion, these nanoparticles pass through the digestive tract, where they may undergo physicochemical transformations, with consequences for the luminal environment, before crossing the epithelial barrier to reach the systemic compartment. In this review, we consider two examples, nanosilver and nanotitanium dioxide. Despite the specific features of these particles and the differences between them, both display a close relationship between physicochemical reactivity and bioavailability/biopersistence in the gastrointestinal tract. Few studies have focused on the interactions of nanoparticles of silver or titanium dioxide with the microbiota and mucus. However, the microbiota and mucus play key roles in intestinal homeostasis and host health and are undoubtedly involved in controlling the distribution of nanoparticles in the systemic compartment. Abstract

Chantier qualité GA; The objectives of the study were to evaluate allelic frequencies and to test the association of polymorphisms in the calpastatin (CAST) and μ-calpain (CAPN1) genes with meat tenderness in 3 French beef breeds. A total of 1,114 Charolais, 1,254 Limousin, and 981 Blonde d'Aquitaine purebred young bulls were genotyped for 3 SNP in the CAST gene and 4 SNP in the CAPN1 gene. Two of these markers, 1 in each gene, can be found in Australian or American commercial genetic tests. Others have previously been reported in American studies or are newly evidenced SNP. The quantitative traits studied were Warner-Bratzler shear force and a tenderness score evaluated by trained sensory panels. All the SNP were informative in the 3 breeds. Associations of individual markers or haplotypes with traits were analyzed. The results differed in the 3 breeds. The G allele of a CAST marker (position 97574679 on Btau4.0) was found to exert a significant effect on the shear force (+0.18 phenotypic SD; RSD) and tenderness score (-0.22 RSD) in the Blonde d'Aquitaine breed. In the same breed, this marker was associated with another CAST SNP (position 97576054 on Btau4.0) such that the GA haplotype appeared to be associated with tougher meat. Two CAPN1 markers (positions 45221250 and 45241089 on Btau4.0) had a significant effect on both traits in the Charolais breed (from |0.11| to |0.25| RSD). In the same breed, these markers were associated with another CAPNI SNP (position 45219395 on Btau4.0) such that the ACA and AGG haplotypes appeared to be associated with a tender meat and a tougher meat, respectively. Consequently, the present results indicate that the effects of the markers studied are breed-specific and cannot be extended to all Bos taurus breeds. Further studies are also required to identify other more appropriate markers for French beef breeds.

International audience; Acute inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy, or Guillain-Barre ́ syn- drome (GBS), is characterized by peripheral nerve demyelination, which leads to rapidly progressive weakness, loss of sensation, and loss of deep tendon reflexes. It is a prototype of postinfectious autoimmune disease, whose pathophysiology is well described in the forms provoked by certain bacteria (molecular mimicry with Campylobacter jejuni), but remains unclear for the forms related to other organisms (cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus and other herpes group viruses, Mycoplasma pneumoniae). Glomerular lesions can be associated with the neurological symptoms and have also been described after various infections, independently of any signs of polyradiculoneuropathy. We report the observation of a 12-year-old girl who presented with Guillain-Barre ́ syndrome with facial diple- gia, ataxia, and intracranial hypertension following Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) primary infection. During the course of the neurological disease, membranous glomerulonephritis (MGN) was diagnosed. The neurological impairment was regressive within 6 months after intra- venous immunoglobulin treatment followed by intravenous then oral corticosteroid administration. Viremia remained high more than 6 months after the onset of symptoms. Glomerulopathy progressed independently and finally required immunosuppressant medication with cyclosporine. EBV might be the factor that triggered the auto- immune disorders, as previously reported for systemic lupus ery- thematosus and multiple sclerosis in children. To the best of our knowledge, this association of 3 conditions (GBS, MGN, and EBV primary infection) has never been reported in the literature.; La polyradiculonevrite aigue (PRNA) ou syndrome de Guillain-Barre ́ est caracterisee par une demyelinisation des nerfs peripheriques entraınant un deficit sensitivomoteur et une areflexie osteotendineuse d’evolution rapide. La PRNA est un prototype de maladie autoimmune post-infectieuse, dont la physiopathologie a ete ́ bien decrite pour certains germes (mimetisme moleculaire et Campylo-bacterjejuni) et qui est encore peu connue pour d’autre (cytomega- lovirus, Epstein-Barr virus et autres virus du groupe herpes, Mycoplasma pneumoniae). Une atteinte glomerulaire peut etre associee a` l’atteinte neurologique et a par ailleurs ete ́ decrite au cours de certaines infections independamment de toute polyradiculonevrite. Nous rapportons l’observation d’une patiente de 12 ans qui a presente ́ une PRNA avec une diplegie faciale, une ataxie et une hypertension intracranienne au decours d’une primo-infection a` virus Epstein-Barr (EBV) ; puis qui a developpe ́ une glomerulo-nephrite extramembraneuse (GEM). L’atteinte neurologique a ete ́ resolutive en 6 mois apres 3 cures d’immunoglobulines intraveineu- ses suivies de 3 cures de corticoı ̈des intraveineux avec relais oral. La viremie etait restee elevee plus de 6 mois apres le debut de la symptomatologie. L’atteinte renale avait évolué pour son propre compte et avait necessite ́ un traitement immunosuppresseur par ciclosporine. L’EBV pourrait etre le declencheur de l’auto-immunité dans ce cas, comme cela a déjà été évoqué dans le lupus érythémateux dissemine ́ et la sclerose en plaques chez l’enfant. Nous n’avons pas trouve ́ d’observation associant les 3 conditions (PRNA, GEM et primo-infection a` EBV) dans la litterature francaise et anglo-saxonne

Abstract

International audience; Biofilms can be generally defined as a complex and dynamic ecosystem, constituted by a community of microorganisms adherent to a substrate and often embedded within a selfproduced extracellular polymeric matrix. Biofilm formation is a well-recognized phenomenon, especially in medical and food industries and often leads to undesirable effects (nosocomial infections, energy losses, accelerated corrosion, food spoilage, and spread of foodborne diseases…). In this framework, surface engineering for preventing biofilm formation is a challenging question, which has fuelled an explosion of research in surface science for the development of antimicrobial and/or anti-adhesive materials by physical or chemical modifications. The surface treatment can prevent biofilm formation by limiting the initial microbial adhesion and/or by killing microorganisms as they come in close contact with the solid surface. Among the different approaches considered, a growing interest is focused on thin silver coatings, like silver-based composite materials, due to their extended time-release properties. In the present work, plasma-mediated thin films (~170 nm), containing silver nanoparticles embedded in an organosilicon matrix, were deposited onto stainless steel. The process originality relies on a dual strategy, associating silver sputtering and simultaneous Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition, in an argon-hexamethyldisiloxane plasma, using an asymmetrical radiofrequency discharge at 13.56 MHz. SEM demonstrated the nanoparticle-based morphology of the deposited layer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of metallic silver nanoparticles embeddedin the organosilicon matrix. The film anti-adhesive potentialities were evaluated in vitro towards the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by performing shear-flow induced detachment experiments, under well-controlled hydrodynamic and physico-chemical conditions. The maximal effect was achieved for the organosilicon matrix alone. When silver nanoparticles were incorporated, yeast detachment was less pronounced, probably due to the strong affinity of embedded silver for biological groups of the cell wall surface. The presence of methyl groups in the matrix network could also promote enhanced hydrophobic cell/coating interactions. An antifungal action of released silver (Ag+ ions and/ornanoparticles) at the immediate vicinity of the coating surface occurred, since a 1.4 log reduction in viable counts was observed, compared to control conditions with bare stainless steel. TEM observations of the yeast ultrastructure demonstrated morphological and structural damages. The presence of electron-dense silver clusters was also detected not only on the cell surface but also within the cell. In parallel, the coating antimicrobial properties against bacteria were assessed (reduction in viable counts of 1.5 and 2.4 log and for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively).

Abstract

International audience; A process combining silver sputtering and plasma polymerization of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) was adjusted by HMDSO-pulsed injections. It produced stable coatings of silver-containing SiCO material deposited on stainless steel. The antibacterial activity of the silver-composite coatings was evaluated on the model bacteria Escherichia coli ATCC 10536. The bactericidal properties of the silver nanoparticle-containing plasma polymer were demonstrated. Indeed, a significant drop in viable bacterial count (> 4 log reduction) was observed, whatever the Ag content.

Abstract

International audience; Thin SiOF films were elaborated in microwave excited DECR plasma reactor (Distributed Electron Cyclotron Resonance) from a mixture of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and oxygen (O2) (in 1: 9 proportion) with the presence of various CF4 concentrations. The fluorine contents in the films composition were adjusted by the CF4 gas flow ratio (in the range of 10 - 70%). The refractive index and the deposition rate were estimated from ellipsometric data and the film chemical structure was studied by FTIR analysis technique. The deposition rate increases with increasing CF4 flow and then decreases after reaching a maximum value for 20% of CF4. The decrease in the deposition rate may be attributed to the etching effect by CF4 plasma during the deposition process. As the additive fluorine concentration increases, the intensity of Si–F peak stretching vibrations located at 930 cm-1 increases and the frequency of the Si–O stretching vibration mode centered at 1060 cm-1 shifts towards higher wavenumber.

Abstract

International audience; The work is focused on defining a stainless steel surface treatment to prevent microbial adhesion. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was selected as the model for eukaryotic cells. Different surface cleaning procedures, including chemical and plasma-mediated treatments, were studied. Detachment experiments displayed no modification in yeast adhesion, despite significant variations in the physico-chemical properties of the solid surface. Plasma-mediated thin coatings (~375 nm) were then deposited on stainless steel applying hexamethyldisiloxane/oxygen plasma. FT-IR study revealed a dense Si-O-Si network, while XPS analysis detected no more iron or chromiumat the extreme surface. Detachment experiments demonstrated that these films were successful in preventing cell adhesion, due to a barrier effect.
