A robust approach for real-time analysis of the scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) data streams, based on ensemble learning and iterative training (ELIT) of deep convolutional neural networks, is implemented on an operational microscope, enabling the exploration of the dynamics of specific atomic configurations under electron beam irradiation via an automated experiment in STEM. Combined with beam control, this approach allows studying beam effects on selected atomic groups and chemical bonds in a fully automated mode. Here, we demonstrate atomically precise engineering of single vacancy lines in transition metal dichalcogenides and the creation and identification of topological defects in graphene. The ELIT-based approach facilitates direct on-the-fly analysis of the STEM data and engenders real-time feedback schemes for probing electron beam chemistry, atomic manipulation, and atom by atom assembly.

The bondline of electric-resistance-welded (ERW) linepipe steel, often etched white (i.e., ferrite) in optical microscopy, is generally believed to be carbon depleted. The mechanism for the carbon depletion, however, is not fully understood by researchers. To this end, atom probe tomography (APT) was used to measure elemental segregation of the as-welded and post-weld heat-treated bondline regions of X70 linepipe welds. The thin vertical features at the bondline in the as-welded condition were identified as carbon-rich martensite-austenite (M-A) constituents, and the majority ferrite phase in the bondline was identified as carbon-depleted ferrite. Following the post-weld normalization, all alloying elements, except Nb and Mo, are homogenized across the bondline and heat-affected zone. The carbon depletion in the ERW bondline was accurately measured. A new mechanism for carbon depletion has been proposed using Scheil calculations of elemental partitioning during weld formation. Segregation of elements in the heat-affected zone was shown to follow the negligible partitioning local equilibrium (NPLE) kinetics for bainite transformation.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) often exhibit dynamic responses to the reaction and pretreatment environment that affect their activity. The lack of understanding of these behaviors hinders the development of effective, stable SACs, and makes their investigations rather difficult. Here we report a reduction-oxidation cycle that induces nearly 5-fold activity enhancement on Pt/TiO2 SACs for the reverse water-gas shift (rWGS) reaction. We combine microscopy (STEM) and spectroscopy (XAS and IR) studies with kinetic measurements, to convincingly show that the low activity on the fresh SAC is a result of limited accessibility of Pt single atoms (Pt1) due to high Pt-O coordination. The reduction step mobilizes Pt1, forming small, amorphous, and unstable Pt aggregates. The reoxidation step redisperses Pt into Pt1, but in a new, less O-coordinated chemical environment that makes the single metal atoms more accessible and, consequently, more active. After the cycle, the SAC exhibits superior rWGS activity to nonatomically dispersed Pt/TiO2. During the rWGS, the activated Pt1 experience slow deactivation, but can be reactivated by mild oxidation. This work demonstrates a clear picture of how the structural evolution of Pt/TiO2 SACs leads to ultimate catalytic efficiency, offering desired understanding on the rarely explored dynamic chemical environment of supported single metal atoms and its catalytic consequences.

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been established as a versatile route for the large-scale synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenides, such as tungsten disulfide (WS2). Yet, the role of the precursor composition on the efficiency of the CVD process remains largely unknown and yet to be explored. Here, we employ Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) in a two-stage process to tune the oxygen content in tungsten oxide (WO3-x) precursors and demonstrate that the presence of oxygen vacancies in the precursor films leads to a more facile conversion from WO3-x to WS2. Using a joint study based on ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments, we unravel that the oxygen vacancies in WO3-x can serve as niches through which sulfur atoms enters the lattice and may facilitate an efficient growth of WS2 crystals. By solely modulating the precursor stoichiometry, the photoluminescence emission of WS2 can be greatly enhanced, while the size of WS2 domains increases significantly. Atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) reveals that tungsten vacancies are the dominant intrinsic defects in mono- and bilayers WS2. Moreover, our data reveal that grain boundaries in bilayer WS2 emerge upon the coalescence of AA' and AB-oriented crystals, while turbostatic moir\'e patterns originate upon formation of distinct grain boundaries between the bottom and bottom layers. The atomic resolution images show local strain buildup in bilayer WS2 due to competing effects of complex grain boundaries. Our study provides a means to tune the precursor composition in order to control the lateral growth of TMDs, while revealing insights into the different pathways for the formation of grain boundaries in bilayer WS2.

MXenes, a new family of functional two-dimensional (2D) materials, have shown great potential for an extensive variety of applications within the last decade. Atomic defects and functional groups in MXenes are known to have a tremendous influence on the functional properties. In this review, we focus on recent progress in the characterization of atomic defects and functional group chemistry in MXenes, and how to control them to directly influence various properties (e.g., electron transport, Li' adsorption, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, and magnetism) of 2D MXenes materials. Dynamic structural transformations such as oxidation and growth induced by atomic defects in MXenes are also discussed. The review thus provides perspectives on property optimization through atomic defect engineering, and bottom-up synthesis methods based on defect-assisted homoepitaxial growth of MXenes. Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) monolayer atomic crystal materials offer great potential for extending the field of novel separation technology due to their infinitesimal thickness and mechanical strength. One difficult and ongoing challenge is to perforate the 2D monolayer material with subnanometer pores with atomic precision for sieving similarly sized molecules. Here, we demonstrate the exceptional separation performance of ionic liquid (IL)/graphene hybrid membranes for challenging separation of CO2 and N2. Notably, the ultrathin ILs afford dynamic tuning of the size and chemical affinity of nanopores while preserving the high permeance of the monolayer nanoporous graphene membranes. The hybrid membrane yields a high CO2 permeance of 4000 GPU and an outstanding CO2/N2 selectivity up to 32. This rational hybrid design provides a universal direction for broadening gas separation capability of atomically thin nanoporous membranes.

Atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) has been used extensively for synthesizing two-dimensional (2D) materials, due to its low cost and promise for high-quality monolayer crystal synthesis. However, the understanding of the reaction mechanism and the key parameters affecting the APCVD processes is still in its embryonic stage. Hence, the scalability of the APCVD method in achieving large scale continuous film remains very poor. Here, we use MoSe2 as a model system and present a fluid guided growth strategy for understanding and controlling the growth of 2D materials. Through the integration of experiment and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis in the full-reactor scale, we identified three key parameters: precursor mixing, fluid velocity and shear stress, which play a critical role in the APCVD process. By modifying the geometry of the growth setup, to enhance precursor mixing and decrease nearby velocity shear rate and adjusting flow direction, we have successfully obtained inch-scale monolayer MoSe2. This unprecedented success of achieving scalable 2D materials through fluidic design lays the foundation for designing new CVD systems to achieve the scalable synthesis of nanomaterials.

The localized corrosion of Li-containing nm hardening precipitates in the 3rd generation of Al-Cu-Li alloys was investigated based on a quasi in situ approach by sequentially exposing the material to NaCl solution and characterizing the structural, chemical, and electrochemical evolution at atomic scale using electron microscopy, spectroscopy, 3D tomography, electrochemical measurements, and DFT calculations. Localized corrosion of Al7.5Cu4Li (TB phase) initiated along {001} family of planes through the dealloying of Al and Li due to a low surface work function. Cu was enriched along the Cu (110) // TB (011) // Al (100) orientations on and around corroded TB precipitates. No strong galvanic interactions were observed at the TB and Al matrix interface due to the formation of a Li-C-O rich passivation layer during electrolyte exposure. Similarities and differences between TB and other common Al-Cu-Li precipitates (Al2CuLi, Al6CuLi3, and Al3Li) with respect to corrosion are discussed. The reported corrosion mechanism can assist in the assessment of the localized corrosion susceptibility of precipitation-hardened Al alloys and assist in the design of new alloys.

The support–metal interaction is an important element of heterogeneous catalyst design and is particularly critical for the rapidly growing field of single-atom catalysts (SACs). We investigate the impact of varying the defect density of the titania support on metal–organic Pt SACs for hydrosilylation reactions. Pt SACs are decorated on the powder titania support, employing a metal–ligand interaction with a dipyridyl-tetrazine ligand (DPTZ). The single-atom nature of Pt is verified by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) on both pristine and defective titania surfaces. These Pt species have a +2 oxidation state and are stabilized by bonding with DPTZ, surface oxygen, and residual chloride from the metal precursor. The catalytic activity is evaluated for the alkene hydrosilylation reaction and it is discovered that the activity of Pt-ligand is positively correlated with the defect density of the titania support. The turn-over number (TON) is calculated to be 12 530 for Pt SACs on a defective surface, which is significantly higher than Pt SACs on a pristine titania surface (830) for the same reaction period (10 min) under the same conditions (70 °C). We ascribe the high activity of Pt SACs on defective titania surfaces to two aspects: the coordination of Pt with more chloride than on pristine titania surfaces, which shortens the induction period of the reaction, and the preferential dispersion of Pt–DPTZ units on defective regions of titania surfaces, allowing facile contact between Pt sites and reactants. The supported Pt–DPTZ SACs show high stability through multiple cycles of batch reactions. This work demonstrates an efficient approach to improve the activity and stability of SACs by optimizing the metal–support interaction, which can also be applied to other oxide surfaces to further develop next-generation heterogeneous single-atom catalysts.

Description, Nickel nanoparticles drive the width of bilayer nanoribbons down to 8 nm, enabling quantum transport at high temperatures., Transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit a variety of electronic behaviors depending on the number of layers and width. Therefore, developing facile methods for their controllable synthesis is of central importance. We found that nickel nanoparticles promote both heterogeneous nucleation of the first layer of molybdenum disulfide and simultaneously catalyzes homoepitaxial tip growth of a second layer via a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism, resulting in bilayer nanoribbons with width controlled by the nanoparticle diameter. Simulations further confirm the VLS growth mechanism toward nanoribbons and its orders of magnitude higher growth speed compared to the conventional noncatalytic growth of flakes. Width-dependent Coulomb blockade oscillation observed in the transfer characteristics of the nanoribbons at temperatures up to 60 K evidences the value of this proposed synthesis strategy for future nanoelectronics.

Gas reactions studied by in situ electron microscopy can be used to capture the real-time morphological and microchemical transformations of materials at length scales down to the atomic level. In situ closed-cell gas reaction (CCGR) studies performed using (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (STEM) can separate and identify localized dynamic reactions, which are extremely challenging to capture using other characterization techniques. For these experiments, we used a CCGR holder that utilizes microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based heating microchips (hereafter referred to as "E-chips"). The experimental protocol described here details the method for performing in situ gas reactions in dry and wet gases in an aberration-corrected STEM. This method finds relevance in many different materials systems, such as catalysis and high-temperature oxidation of structural materials at atmospheric pressure and in the presence of various gases with or without water vapor. Here, several sample preparation methods are described for various material form factors. During the reaction, mass spectra obtained with a residual gas analyzer (RGA) system with and without water vapor further validates gas exposure conditions during reactions. Integrating an RGA with an in situ CCGR-STEM system can, therefore, provide critical insight to correlate gas composition with the dynamic surface evolution of materials during reactions. In situ/operando studies using this approach allow for detailed investigation of the fundamental reaction mechanisms and kinetics that occur at specific environmental conditions (time, temperature, gas, pressure), in real-time, and at high spatial resolution.

Pt-based catalysts are common in fuel cells but suffer from high cost and poor durability. To overcome these limitations, earth-abundant metals are often incorporated with Pt in core@shell architectures or through alloy formation. Here, the concepts of a core@shell architecture, alloyed surfaces, and high-durability intermetallics are integrated into one nanostructure platform using seed-mediated co-reduction (SMCR). Specifically, random alloy PtM (where M = Ni, Co, Cu, or Fe) shells are deposited on intermetallic PdCu B2 seeds. Control of shell thickness and Pt:M ratios is also demonstrated, providing a general route to strain-engineered alloyed surfaces. The performance of these nanocatalysts was evaluated for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as a function of shell thickness and shell composition, where PtCu and PtNi shells showed a 230% and 270% activity increase, respectively, compared to the Pt reference. Assembling matter atom-by-atom into functional devices is the ultimate goal of nanotechnology. The possibility of achieving this goal is intrinsically dependent on the ability to visualize matter at the atomic level, induce and control atomic-scale motion, facilitate and direct chemical reactions, and coordinate and guide fabrication processes towards desired structures atom-by-atom. In this Perspective, we summarize recent progress in chemical transformations, material alterations and atomic dynamics studies enabled by the converged, atomic-sized electron beam of an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope. We discuss how such top-down observations have led to the concept of controllable, beam-induced processes and then of bottom-up, atom-by-atom assembly via electron-beam control. The progress in this field, from electron-beam-induced material transformations to atomically precise doping and multi-atom assembly, is reviewed, as are the associated engineering, theoretical and big-data challenges. Electron beams in a transmission electron microscope can be used to manipulate matter atom-by-atom. This Review surveys the recent advances and discusses how the further development and integration of machine learning, theory, feedback and instrumentation will push the field forward.
