High-rate, high-fidelity entanglement distribution is essential to the creation of a quantum internet, but recent achievements in fiber and satellite-based entanglement distribution fall far short of what is needed. Chen et al. [Phys. Rev. Appl. 19, 054209 (2023)] proposed a means for dramatically increasing entanglement-distribution rates via zero added-loss multiplexing (ZALM). ZALM's quantum transmitter employs a pair of Sagnac-configured spontaneous parametric downconverters (SPDCs), channelization via dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) filtering, and partial Bell-state measurements (BSMs) to realize a heralded source of frequency-multiplexed polarization-entangled biphotons. Each biphoton is transmitted to Alice and Bob with a classical message identifying its frequency channel and the heralded entangled state. Their quantum receivers use DWDM filtering and mode conversion to interface their received biphotons to intra-cavity color-center quantum memories. This paper delves deeply into ZALM's SPDCs, partial-BSMs, and loading of Alice and Bob's quantum memories. It derives the density operators for the SPDC sources and the quantum memories, allowing heralding probability, heralding efficiency, and fidelity to be evaluated for both the polarization-entangled biphotons and the loaded quantum memories, thus enabling exploration of the parameter space for optimizing ZALM performance. Even without optimization analysis, the paper already demonstrates two critical features of the ZALM architecture: the necessity of achieving a near-separable channelized biphoton wave function to ensure the biphoton sent to Alice and Bob is of high purity; and the premium placed on Alice and Bob's temporal-mode converters' enabling narrowband push-pull memory loading to ensure the arriving biphoton's state is faithfully transferred to the intra-cavity color centers., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figure, 1 table

We reexamine the well-known Duan-Kimble entanglement scheme, wherein the state of a single-photon qubit is entangled with a quantum memory consisting of a single-atom qubit in a strongly coupled optical cavity, providing the capability to load the photon's state into the memory. We correct a common error appearing in some subsequent papers regarding the validity of the single-photon reflectivity function that characterizes the essential phase shift at the heart of the protocol. Using the validated analytical solution, we introduce an improved scheme-the push-pull configuration-where the photon and cavity are tuned at the midpoint between atomic resonances and show that it can outperform the original on-off configuration in which the photon and cavity are tuned exactly to one of the atomic resonances. The performance metric used is the final memory-state fidelity versus the heralding probability, which determines the memory loading rate. The results should play a role in optimizing future quantum repeater schemes based on the Duan-Kimble protocol.

Errors are the fundamental barrier to the development of quantum systems. Quantum networks are complex systems formed by the interconnection of multiple components and suffer from error accumulation. Characterizing errors introduced by quantum network components becomes a fundamental task to overcome their depleting effects in quantum communication. Quantum Network Tomography (QNT) addresses end-to-end characterization of link errors in quantum networks. It is a tool for building error-aware applications, network management, and system validation. We provide an overview of QNT and its initial results for characterizing quantum star networks. We apply a previously defined QNT protocol for estimating bit-flip channels to estimate depolarizing channels. We analyze the performance of our estimators numerically by assessing the Quantum Cram\`er-Rao Bound (QCRB) and the Mean Square Error (MSE) in the finite sample regime. We closely replicated and extended a recent experiment ("Spatial properties of entangled two-photon absorption," Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 183601, 2022) that reportedly observed enhancement of two-photon absorption rates in molecular samples by using time-frequency-entangled photon pairs, and we found that in the low-flux regime, where such enhancement is theoretically predicted in-principle, the two-photon fluorescence signal is below detection threshold using current state-of-the-art methods. The results are important in the context of efforts to enable quantum-enhanced molecular spectroscopy and imaging at ultra-low optical flux. Using an optical parametric down-conversion photon-pair source that can be varied from the low-gain spontaneous regime to the high-gain squeezing regime, we observed two-photon-induced fluorescence in the high-gain regime but in the low-gain regime any fluorescence was below detection threshold. We supplemented the molecular fluorescence experiments with a study of nonlinear-optical sum-frequency generation, for which we are able to observe the low-to-high-gain crossover, thereby verifying our theoretical models and experimental techniques. The observed rates (or lack thereof) in both experiments are consistent with theoretical predictions and with our previous experiments, and indicate that time-frequency photon entanglement does not provide a practical means to enhance in-solution molecular two-photon fluorescence spectroscopy or imaging with current techniques.

We address theoretically the question of classical stochastic fields mimicking quantum states of light in the context of nonlinear spectroscopy and nonlinear optics, in particular two-photon absorption (TPA) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) driven by weak or bright broadband squeezed vacuum with time-frequency entanglement between photons. Upon using a well-defined but ad hoc subtraction of vacuum-energy terms (renormalization), we find that the classical stochastic model yields exactly the same predictions as the full quantum-field theory for all of the phenomena considered here, in both the low-gain and high-gain regimes of squeezed vacuum. Such predictions include the linear-flux scaling of TPA and SFG rates at low incident photon flux, as well as the dependence of TPA and SHG rates on the relative linewidths of the squeezed light and the ground-to-final-state transition in the material system, and the spectrum of SFG generated by bright squeezed vacuum.

The quantum nature of light enables potentially revolutionary communication technologies. Key to advancing this area of research is a clear understanding of the concepts of states, modes, fields, and photons. The concept of field modes carries over from classical optics, while the concept of state has to be considered carefully when treating light quantum mechanically. The term 'photon' is an overloaded identifier in the sense that it is often used to refer to either a quantum particle or the state of a field. This overloading, often used without placing in context, has the potential to obfuscate the physical processes that describe the reality we measure. Quantum entanglement-based imaging promises significantly increased resolution by extending the spatial separation of optical collection apertures used in very-long-baseline interferometry for astronomy and geodesy. We report a table-top entanglement-based interferometric imaging technique that utilizes two entangled field modes serving as a phase reference between two apertures. The spatial distribution of a simulated thermal light source is determined by interfering light collected at each aperture with one of the entangled fields and performing joint measurements. This experiment demonstrates the ability of entanglement to implement interferometric imaging.

Quantum information science and technology (QIST) is a critical and emerging technology with the potential for enormous world impact and is currently invested in by over 40 nations. To bring these large-scale investments to fruition and bridge the lower technology readiness levels (TRLs) of fundamental research at universities to the high TRLs necessary to realize the promise of practical quantum advantage accessible to industry and the public, we present a roadmap for Quantum Technology Demonstration Projects (QTDPs). Such QTDPs, focused on intermediate TRLs, are large-scale public-private partnerships with a high probability of translation from laboratory to practice. They create technology demonstrating a clear 'quantum advantage' for science breakthroughs that are user-motivated and will provide access to a broad and diverse community of scientific users. Concept induction, which is based on formal logical reasoning over description logics, has been used in ontology engineering in order to create ontology (TBox) axioms from the base data (ABox) graph. In this paper, we show that it can also be used to explain data differentials, for example in the context of Explainable AI (XAI), and we show that it can in fact be done in a way that is meaningful to a human observer. Our approach utilizes a large class hierarchy, curated from the Wikipedia category hierarchy, as background knowledge.

The fragile nature of quantum information makes it practically impossible to completely isolate a quantum state from noise under quantum channel transmissions. Quantum networks are complex systems formed by the interconnection of quantum processing devices through quantum channels. In this context, characterizing how channels introduce noise in transmitted quantum states is of paramount importance. Precise descriptions of the error distributions introduced by non-unitary quantum channels can inform quantum error correction protocols to tailor operations for the particular error model. In addition, characterizing such errors by monitoring the network with end-to-end measurements enables end-nodes to infer the status of network links. In this work, we address the end-to-end characterization of quantum channels in a quantum network by introducing the problem of Quantum Network Tomography. The solution for this problem is an estimator for the probabilities that define a Kraus decomposition for all quantum channels in the network, using measurements performed exclusively in the end-nodes. We study this problem in detail for the case of arbitrary star quantum networks with quantum channels described by a single Pauli operator, like bit-flip quantum channels. We provide solutions for such networks with polynomial sample complexity. As part of the large number of scientific articles being published every year, the publication rate of biomedical literature has been increasing. Consequently, there has been considerable effort to harness and summarize the massive amount of biomedical research articles. While transformer-based encoder-decoder models in a vanilla source document-to-summary setting have been extensively studied for abstractive summarization in different domains, their major limitations continue to be entity hallucination (a phenomenon where generated summaries constitute entities not related to or present in source article(s)) and factual inconsistency. This problem is exacerbated in a biomedical setting where named entities and their semantics (which can be captured through a knowledge base) constitute the essence of an article. The use of named entities and facts mined from background knowledge bases pertaining to the named entities to guide abstractive summarization has not been studied in biomedical article summarization literature. In this paper, we propose an entity-driven fact-aware framework for training end-to-end transformer-based encoder-decoder models for abstractive summarization of biomedical articles. We call the proposed approach, whose building block is a transformer-based model, EFAS, Entity-driven Fact-aware Abstractive Summarization. We conduct experiments using five state-of-the-art transformer-based models (two of which are specifically designed for long document summarization) and demonstrate that injecting knowledge into the training/inference phase of these models enables the models to achieve significantly better performance than the standard source document-to-summary setting in terms of entity-level factual accuracy, N-gram novelty, and semantic equivalence while performing comparably on ROUGE metrics. We present an analytical quantum theoretic model for non-resonant molecular two-photon absorption (TPA) of broadband, spectrally multi-mode squeezed vacuum, including low-gain (isolated entangled photon pairs or EPP) and high-gain (bright squeezed vacuum or BSV) regimes. The results are relevant to the potential use of entangled-light TPA as a spectroscopic and imaging method. We treat the scenario that the exciting light is spatially single-mode and is non-resonant with all intermediate molecular states. In the case of high gain, we find that in the case that the linewidth of the final molecular state is much narrower than the bandwidth of the exciting light, bright squeezed vacuum is found to be equally (but no more) effective in driving TPA as is a quasi-monochromatic coherent-state (classical) pulse of the same temporal shape, duration and mean photon number. Therefore, in this case the sought-for advantage of observing TPA at extremely low optical flux is not provided by broadband bright squeezed vacuum. In the opposite case that the final-state linewidth is much broader than the bandwidth of the BSV exciting light, we show that the TPA rate is proportional to the second-order intensity autocorrelation function at zero time delay g^(2)(0), as expected. We derive and evaluate formulas describing the transition between these two limiting cases, that is, including the regime where the molecular linewidth and optical bandwidth are comparable, as is often the case in experimental studies. We also show that for g^(2)(0) to reach the idealized form g^(2)(0) = 3 + 1/n, with n being the mean number of photons per temporal mode, it is required to compensate the dispersion inherent in the nonlinear-optical crystal used to generate the BSV., Comment: submitted to PRA

The rapidly growing quantum information science and engineering (QISE) industry will require both quantum-aware and quantum-proficient engineers at the bachelor's level. We provide a roadmap for building a quantum engineering education program to satisfy this need. For quantum-aware engineers, we describe how to design a first quantum engineering course accessible to all STEM students. For the education and training of quantum-proficient engineers, we detail both a quantum engineering minor accessible to all STEM majors, and a quantum track directly integrated into individual engineering majors. We propose that such programs typically require only three or four newly developed courses that complement existing engineering and science classes available on most larger campuses. We describe a conceptual quantum information science course for implementation at any post-secondary institution, including community colleges and military schools. QISE presents extraordinary opportunities to work towards rectifying issues of inclusivity and equity that continue to be pervasive within engineering. We present a plan to do so and describe how quantum engineering education presents an excellent set of education research opportunities. Finally, we outline a hands-on training plan on quantum hardware, a key component of any quantum engineering program, with a variety of technologies including optics, atoms and ions, cryogenic and solid-state technologies, nanofabrication, and control and readout electronics. Our recommendations provide a flexible framework that can be tailored for academic institutions ranging from teaching and undergraduate-focused two- and four-year colleges to research-intensive universities., Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures

When a low flux of time-frequency-entangled photon pairs (EPP) illuminates a two-photon transition, the rate of two-photon absorption (TPA) can be enhanced considerably by the quantum nature of photon number correlations and frequency correlations. We present a quantum-theoretic derivation of entangled TPA (ETPA) and calculate an upper bound on the amount of quantum enhancement that is possible in such systems. The derived bounds indicate that in order to observe ETPA the experiments would need to operate at a combination of significantly higher rates of EPP illumination, molecular concentrations, and conventional TPA cross sections than are achieved in typical experiments., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, submitted for publication

Two-photon absorption (TPA) and other nonlinear interactions of molecules with time-frequency-entangled photon pairs (EPP) has been predicted to display a variety of fascinating effects. Therefore, their potential use in practical quantum-enhanced molecular spectroscopy requires close examination. This paper presents in tutorial style a detailed theoretical study of one- and two-photon absorption by molecules, focusing on how to treat the quantum nature of light. We review some basic quantum optics theory, then we review the density-matrix (Liouville) derivation of molecular optical response, emphasizing how to incorporate quantum states of light into the treatment. For illustration we treat in detail the TPA of photon pairs created by spontaneous parametric down conversion, with an emphasis on how quantum light TPA differs from that with classical light. In particular, we treat the question of how much enhancement of the TPA rate can be achieved using entangled states. The paper includes review of known theoretical methods and results, as well as some extensions, especially the comparison of TPA processes that occur via far-off-resonant intermediate states only and those that involve off-resonant intermediate state by virtue of dephasing processes. Entangled photon pairs have been promised to deliver a substantial quantum advantage for two-photon absorption spectroscopy. However, recent work has challenged the previously reported magnitude of quantum enhancement in two-photon absorption. Here, we present an experimental comparison of sum-frequency generation and molecular absorption, each driven by isolated photon pairs. We establish an upper bound on the enhancement for entangled-two-photon absorption in Rhodamine-6G, which lies well below previously reported values.

While two-photon absorption (TPA) and other forms of nonlinear interactions of molecules with isolated time-frequency-entangled photon pairs (EPP) have been predicted to display a variety of fascinating effects, their potential use in practical quantum-enhanced molecular spectroscopy requires close examination. Recent advances in natural language processing have enabled automation of a wide range of tasks, including machine translation, named entity recognition, and sentiment analysis. Automated summarization of documents, or groups of documents, however, has remained elusive, with many efforts limited to extraction of keywords, key phrases, or key sentences. Accurate abstractive summarization has yet to be achieved due to the inherent difficulty of the problem, and limited availability of training data. In this paper, we propose a topic-centric unsupervised multi-document summarization framework to generate extractive and abstractive summaries for groups of scientific articles across 20 Fields of Study (FoS) in Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG) and news articles from DUC-2004 Task 2. The proposed algorithm generates an abstractive summary by developing salient language unit selection and text generation techniques. Our approach matches the state-of-the-art when evaluated on automated extractive evaluation metrics and performs better for abstractive summarization on five human evaluation metrics (entailment, coherence, conciseness, readability, and grammar). We achieve a kappa score of 0.68 between two co-author linguists who evaluated our results. Time-frequency (TF) filtering of analog signals has played a crucial role in the development of radio-frequency communications, and is currently being recognized as an essential capability for communications, both classical and quantum, in the optical frequency domain. How best to design optical time-frequency (TF) filters to pass a targeted temporal mode (TM), and to reject background (noise) photons in the TF detection window? The solution for coherent TF filtering is known, the quantum pulse gate, whereas the conventional, more common method is implemented by a sequence of incoherent spectral filtering and temporal gating operations. To compare these two methods, we derive a general formalism for two-stage incoherent time frequency filtering, finding expressions for signal pulse transmission efficiency, and for the ability to discriminate TMs, which allows the blocking of unwanted background light. We derive the tradeoff between efficiency and TM discrimination ability, and find a remarkably concise relation between these two quantities and the time-bandwidth product of the combined filters. We apply the formalism to two examples, rectangular filters or Gaussian filters, both of which have known orthogonal-function decompositions. The formalism can be applied to any state of light occupying the input temporal mode, e.g., classical coherent-state signals or pulsed single photon states of light. We point out implications in classical and quantum optical communications. Fluorescence-detected Fourier transform (FT) spectroscopy is a technique in which the relative paths of an optical interferometer are controlled to excite a material sample, and the ensuing fluorescence is detected as a function of the interferometer path delay and relative phase. A common approach to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in these experiments is to apply a continuous phase sweep to the relative optical path, and to detect the resulting modulated fluorescence using a phase-sensitive lock-in amplifier. In many important situations, the fluorescence signal is too weak to be measured using a lock-in amplifier, so that photon counting techniques are preferred. Here we introduce an approach to low-signal fluorescence-detected FT spectroscopy, in which individual photon counts are assigned to a modulated interferometer phase ('phase-tagged photon counting,' or PTPC), and the resulting data are processed to construct optical spectra. We studied the fluorescence signals of a molecular sample excited resonantly by a pulsed coherent laser over a range of photon flux and visibility levels. We compare the performance of PTPC to standard lock-in detection methods and establish the range of signal parameters over which meaningful measurements can be carried out. We find that PTPC generally outperforms the lock-in detection method, with the dominant source of measurement uncertainty being associated with the statistics of the finite number of samples of the photon detection rate., Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures

Just as classical information technology rests on a foundation built of interconnected information-processing systems, quantum information technology (QIT) must do the same. A critical component of such systems is the interconnect, a device or process that allows transfer of information between disparate physical media, for example, semiconductor electronics, individual atoms, light pulses in optical fiber, or microwave fields. While interconnects have been well engineered for decades in the realm of classical information technology, quantum interconnects (QuICs) present special challenges, as they must allow the transfer of fragile quantum states between different physical parts or degrees of freedom of the system. The diversity of QIT platforms (superconducting, atomic, solid-state color center, optical, etc.) that will form a quantum internet poses additional challenges. As quantum systems scale to larger size, the quantum interconnect bottleneck is imminent, and is emerging as a grand challenge for QIT. For these reasons, it is the position of the community represented by participants of the NSF workshop on Quantum Interconnects that accelerating QuIC research is crucial for sustained development of a national quantum science and technology program. Given the diversity of QIT platforms, materials used, applications, and infrastructure required, a convergent research program including partnership between academia, industry and national laboratories is required. This document is a summary from a U.S. National Science Foundation supported workshop held on 31 October - 1 November 2019 in Alexandria, VA. We review the concepts of temporal modes (TMs) in quantum optics, highlighting Roy Glauber's crucial and historic contributions to their development, and their growing importance in quantum information science. TMs are orthogonal sets of wave packets that can be used to represent a multimode light field. They are temporal counterparts to transverse spatial modes of light and play analogous roles - decomposing multimode light into the most natural basis for isolating statistically independent degrees of freedom. We discuss how TMs were developed to describe compactly various processes: superfluorescence, stimulated Raman scattering, spontaneous parametric down conversion, and spontaneous four-wave mixing. TMs can be manipulated, converted, demultiplexed, and detected using nonlinear optical processes such as three-wave mixing and quantum optical memories. The authors demonstrate a form of two-photon-counting interferometry by measuring the coincidence counts between single-photon-counting detectors at an output port of a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) following injection of broad-band time-frequency-entangled photon pairs (EPP) generated from collinear spontaneous parametric down conversion into a single input port. Spectroscopy and refractometry are performed on a sample inserted in one internal path of the MZI by scanning the other path in length, which acquires phase and amplitude information about the samples linear response. Phase modulation and lock-in detection are introduced to increase detection signal-to-noise ratio and implement a down-sampling technique for scanning the interferometer delay, which reduces the sampling requirements needed to reproduce fully the temporal interference pattern. The phase-modulation technique also allows the contributions of various quantum-state pathways leading to the final detection outcomes to be extracted individually. Feynman diagrams frequently used in the context of molecular spectroscopy are used to describe the interferences resulting from the coherence properties of time-frequency EPPs passing through the MZI. These notes, intended to be self contained and tutorial, present a direct, macroscopic approach to quantizing light inside a linear-response dielectric material when both spectral dispersion and spatial nonuniformity are present, but the spectral region of interest is optically transparent so that explicit treatment of the underlying physics of the medium is not needed. The approach taken is based on the macroscopic Maxwell equations and a corresponding Hamiltonian, without the use of Lagrangians or any dynamical model for the medium, and uses a standard mode-based quantization method. Understanding the properties of electronically interacting molecular chromophores, which involve internally coupled electronic-vibrational motions, is important to the spectroscopy of many biologically relevant systems. Here we apply linear absorption, circular dichroism (CD), and two-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (2DFS) to study the polarized collective excitations of excitonically coupled cyanine dimers (Cy3)2 that are rigidly positioned within the opposing sugar-phosphate backbones of the double-stranded region of a double-stranded (ss) - single-stranded (ss) DNA fork construct. We show that the exciton-coupling strength of the (Cy3)2-DNA construct can be systematically varied with temperature below the ds - ss DNA denaturation transition. We interpret spectroscopic measurements in terms of the Holstein vibronic dimer model, from which we obtain information about the local conformation of the (Cy3)2 dimer, as well as the degree of static disorder experienced by the Cy3 monomer and the (Cy3)2 dimer probe locally within their respective DNA duplex environments. The properties of the (Cy3)2-DNA construct we determine suggest that it may be employed as a useful model system to test fundamental concepts of protein-DNA interactions, and the role of electronic-vibrational coherence in electronic energy migration within exciton-coupled bio-molecular arrays.

Many current methods to interpret convolutional neural networks (CNNs) use visualization techniques and words to highlight concepts of the input seemingly relevant to a CNN's decision. The methods hypothesize that the recognition of these concepts are instrumental in the decision a CNN reaches, but the nature of this relationship has not been well explored. To address this gap, this paper examines the quality of a concept's recognition by a CNN and the degree to which the recognitions are associated with CNN decisions. The study considers a CNN trained for scene recognition over the ADE20k dataset. It uses a novel approach to find and score the strength of minimally distributed representations of input concepts (defined by objects in scene images) across late stage feature maps. Subsequent analysis finds evidence that concept recognition impacts decision making. Single-photon wave packets can carry quantum information between nodes of a quantum network. An important general operation in photon-based quantum information systems is blind reversal of a photon's temporal wave-packet envelope, that is, the ability to reverse an envelope without knowing the temporal state of the photon. We present an all-optical means for doing so, using nonlinear-optical frequency conversion driven by a short pump pulse. This scheme allows for quantum operations such as a temporal-mode parity sorter. Temporal modes (TM) are a new basis for storage and retrieval of quantum information in states of light. The full TM manipulation toolkit requires a practical quantum pulse gate (QPG), which is a device that unitarily maps any given TM component of the optical input field onto a different, easily separable subspace or degree of freedom. An ideal QPG must "separate" the selected TM component with unit efficiency, whilst avoiding crosstalk from orthogonal TMs. All attempts at implementing QPGs in pulsed-pump traveling-wave systems have been unable to satisfy both conditions simultaneously. This is due to a known selectivity limit in processes that rely on spatio-temporally local, nonlinear interactions between pulsed modes traveling at independent group velocities. This limit is a consequence of time ordering in the quantum dynamical evolution, which is predicted to be overcome by coherently cascading multiple stages of low-efficiency, but highly TM-discriminatory QPGs. Multi-stage interferometric quantum frequency conversion in nonlinear waveguides was first proposed for precisely this purpose. TM-nonselective cascaded frequency conversion, also called optical Ramsey interferometry, has recently been demonstrated with continuous-wave (CW) fields. The ever increasing prevalence of publicly available structured data on the World Wide Web enables new applications in a variety of domains. In this paper, we provide a conceptual approach that leverages such data in order to explain the input-output behavior of trained artificial neural networks. We apply existing Semantic Web technologies in order to provide an experimental proof of concept.

Orthogonal temporal modes (TMs) form a field-orthogonal, continuous-variable degree of freedom that is in principle infinite dimensional, and create a promising resource for quantum information science and technology. The ideal quantum pulse gate (QPG) is a device that multiplexes and demultiplexes temporally orthogonal optical pulses that have the same carrier frequency, spatial mode, and polarization. The QPG is the chief enabling technology for usage of orthogonal temporal modes as a basis for high-dimensional quantum information storage and processing. The greatest hurdle for QPG implementation using nonlinear-optical, parametric processes with time-varying pump or control fields is the limitation on achievable temporal mode selectivity, defined as perfect TM discrimination combined with unity efficiency. Quantum frequency conversion (QFC) in nonlinear optical media is a powerful tool for temporal-mode selective manipulation of light. Recent attempts at achieving high mode selectivities and/or fidelities have had to resort to multi-dimensional optimization schemes to determine the system's natural Schmidt modes. Certain combinations of relative-group velocities between the relevant frequency bands, medium length, and temporal pulse widths have been known to achieve good selectivities (exceeding 80%) for temporal modes that are nearly identical to pump pulse shapes, even for high conversion efficiencies. Working in this parameter regime using an off-the-shelf, second-harmonic generation, MgO:PPLN waveguide, and with pulses on the order of 500 fs at wavelengths around 800 nm, we verify experimentally that model-predicted Schmidt modes provide the high temporal-mode selectivity expected. Long-distance quantum communication relies on storing and retrieving photonic qubits in orthogonal field modes. The available degrees of freedom for photons are polarization, spatial-mode profile, and temporal/spectral profile. To date, methods exist for decomposing, manipulating, and analyzing photons into orthogonal polarization modes and spatial modes. Here we propose and theoretically verify the first highly efficient method to carry out analogous operations for temporally and spectrally overlapping, but field-orthogonal, temporal modes. We explore theoretically the feasibility of using frequency conversion by sum- or difference-frequency generation, enabled by three- wave-mixing, for selectively multiplexing orthogonal input waveforms that overlap in time and frequency. Such a process would enable a drop device for use in a transparent optical network using temporally orthogonal waveforms to encode different channels. We model the process using coupled-mode equations appropriate for wave mixing in a uniform second- order nonlinear optical medium pumped by a strong laser pulse. We find Green functions describing the process, and employ Schmidt (singular- value) decompositions thereof to quantify its viability in functioning as a coherent waveform discriminator. We define a selectivity figure of merit in terms of the Schmidt coefficients, and use it to compare and contrast various parameter regimes via extensive numerical computations. We identify the most favorable regime (at least in the case of no pump chirp) and derive the complete analytical solution for the same. We bound the maximum achievable selectivity in this parameter space. We show that including a frequency chirp in the pump does not improve selectivity in this optimal regime. We also find an operating regime in which high-efficiency frequency conversion without temporal-shape selectivity can be achieved while preserving the shapes of a wide class of input pulses. We study the conditional preparation of single photons based on parametric downconversion, where the detection of one photon from a given pair heralds the existence of a single photon in the conjugate mode. We derive conditions on the modal characteristics of the photon pairs, which ensure that the conditionally prepared single photons are quantum-mechanically pure.
