V2944 Ophiuchi was a Fe ii type novae that reached moderate excitation and displayed large variations among the profiles of its emission lines. The profiles become increasingly double-peaked as the ionization level of the parent ion increases. At the extremes, H i and O i have flat-topped profiles while the coronal features [Si vii] and [Ca viii] peak in the line wings and have centers that fall to near the continuum level. He ii, N v, and [Si vi] display intermediate behavior but in the same sense that the line center depth is smallest for He ii and largest for [Si vi. A possible explanation for these profile variations is that the emission line region is ring-like in structure and becomes increasingly flattened as line excitation increases.

Infrared spectroscopy of the recurrent nova U Scorpii from 14.2 days after its 2010 outburst reveals two very strong infrared coronal lines: [Si x] at 1.4305 μm and [Al ix] at 2.0400 μm. Taken together with the detection of coronal lines in the 2022 outburst, this suggests that coronal line emission from U Sco may be a regular, if previously under-observed, occurrence. The strength of the two coronal lines relative the H i emission, and the surprising absence of several commonly seen coronal lines, including some that form under similar conditions as the [Si x] and [Al ix] features, are discussed.

V5588 Sagittarii (Nova Sagittarii 2011 No. 2) was one of the rare novae that undergo outbursts after the initial explosion, and was extreme in that it did so six times. We present 0.8–5.1 μm spectroscopy acquired during the second of these so-called secondary maxima, when the nova was still near its peak brightness and when differences among emission line profiles were most pronounced. Our spectrum supplements and enlarges the wavelength coverage of the extensive observational data set presented by Munari et al. We highlight the differences between the emission line profiles of H i, He i, and Fe ii and point out differences between the narrow and broad line components of the H i lines. We also include identifications for a few weak, previously unobserved Fe ii features in the midwave-infrared.

Infrared spectra of the dusty nova V1112 Persei (Nova Persei 2020) are presented from 29 and 48 days after the onset of dust formation, the later epoch corresponding to when obscuration by the nova dust was at a maximum. The dust emission was featureless and had temperatures of approximately 880 K and 690 K for the two epochs, respectively. Some dust formed along the line of sight and the total extinction for V1112 Per increased from E(B-V) = 0.8 prior to dust formation, to 1.2 on February 3, to 1.4 by February 22. Emission lines of both carbon and oxygen were present along with the dust emission indicating that the dust did not consume all of either of these element.

We present infrared spectroscopy from two epochs of V1533 Scorpii (=Nova Scorpii 2013); one from immediately before dust formation and a second, from one month later when dust formation was complete. The pre-dust spectrum shows strong lines of C i, features that weakened considerably but were still present after dust formation. Also present in the post-formation spectrum was O i emission from the neutral region, indicating that dust formation did not full deplete either carbon or oxygen. While thermal emission from the dust, of a temperature very close to 870 K, dominated the later spectrum, the extinction did not change measurably between epochs, indicating that little or no dust blocked the line-of-sight. Although carbon monoxide was not detected in the first epoch spectrum, weak emission from molecular hydrogen may have been present.

IR spectroscopy from three epochs is presented for the very bright, X-ray nova YZ Reticuli (Nova Reticuli 2020). The first spectrum, from 2.5 months after outburst, shows a nova well into the coronal phase, with strong lines of [Si vi] and [Si vii], and with little or no interstellar reddening, and no dust emission. The second spectrum, from one month later, shows a four-fold drop in brightness and a measurable increase in the coronal lines relative to the lower excitation features. The final spectrum, from 7 months post outburst, is a factor of six fainter and shows a decrease in the relative strength of the coronal lines from the previous epoch. Emission lines from O i and [N i] are present at all epochs, indicating the persistence of a region of largely neutral gas in this otherwise high excitation object.

Comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) was a dynamically new Oort cloud comet whose apparition presented a favorable geometry for observations near close-Earth approach (≃0.93 au) at heliocentric distances ≲2 au when insolation and sublimation of volatiles drive maximum activity. Here we present mid-infrared 6.0 ≲ λ(μm) ≲ 40 spectrophotometric observations at two temporal epochs from NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy and the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility that yield an inventory of the refractory materials and their physical characteristics through thermal modeling analysis. The grain composition is dominated by dark dust grains (modeled as amorphous carbon) with a silicate-to-carbon ratio ≲0.9, little crystalline stoichiometry (no distinct 11.2 μm feature attributed to Mg-rich crystalline olivine), and the submicron grain-size distribution peaking at ≃0.6 μm. The 10 μm silicate feature was weak, ≈12.8% ± 0.1% above the local continuum, and the bolometric grain albedo was low (≲14%). Comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) is a carbon-rich object. This material, which is well represented by the optical constants of amorphous carbon, is similar to the material that darkens and reddens the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. We argue this material is endemic to the nuclei of comets, synthesizing results from the study of Stardust samples, interplanetary dust particle investigations, and micrometeoritic analyses. The atomic carbon-to-silicate ratio of comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) and other comets joins a growing body of evidence suggesting the existence of a C/Si gradient in the primitive solar system, providing new insight into planetesimal formation and the distribution of isotopic and compositional gradients extant today.

Studying the physical conditions structuring the young circumstellar disks is required for understanding the onset of planet formation. Of particular interest is the protoplanetary disk surrounding the Herbig star MWC480. The structure and properties of the circumstellar disk of MWC480 are studied by infrared interferometry and interpreted from a modeling approach. New observations are driving this study, in particular some recent Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI)/MIDI data acquired in December 2013. Our one-component disk model could not reproduce simultaneously all our data: the Spectral Energy Distribution, the near-infrared Keck Interferometer data and the mid-infrared data obtained with the MIDI instrument. In order to explain all measurements, one possibility is to add an asymmetry in our one-component disk model with the assumption that the structure of the disk of MWC480 has not varied with time. Several scenarios are tested, and the one considering the presence of an azimuthal bright feature in the inner component of the disk model provides a better fit of the data. (In this study, we assumed that the size of the outer disk of MWC480 to be 20 au since most of the near and mid-IR emissions come from below 20 au. We present five epochs of near IR observations of the protoplanetary disk around MWC 480 (HD31648) obtained with the SpeX spectrograph on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) between 2007 and 2013, inclusive. Using the measured line fluxes in the Pa beta and Br gamma lines, we found the mass accretion rates to be (1.43 - 2.61)x10^-8 Msun y^-1 and (1.81 - 2.41)x10^-8 Msun y^-1 respectively, but which varied by more than 50% from epoch to epoch. The spectral energy distribution (SED)reveals a variability of about 30% between 1.5 and 10 microns during this same period of time. We investigated the variability using of the continuum emission of the disk in using the Monte-Carlo Radiative Transfer Code (MCRT) HOCHUNK3D. We find that varying the height of the inner rim successfully produces a change in the NIR flux, but lowers the far IR emission to levels below all measured fluxes. Because the star exhibits bipolar flows, we utilized a structure that simulates an inner disk wind to model the variability in the near IR, without producing flux levels in the far IR that are inconsistent with existing data. For this object, variable near IR emission due to such an outflow is more consistent with the data than changing the scale height of the inner rim of the disk., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures

Using the NASA/IRTF SpeX & BASS spectrometers we have obtained novel 0.7 - 13 um observations of the newly imaged HD36546 debris disk system. The SpeX spectrum is most consistent with the photospheric emission expected from an Lstar ~ 20 Lsun, solar abundance A1.5V star with little/no extinction and excess emission from circumstellar dust detectable beyond 4.5 um. Non-detections of CO emission lines and accretion signatures point to the gas poor circumstellar environment of a very old transition disk. Combining the SpeX and BASS spectra with archival WISE/AKARI/IRAS/Herschel photometery, we find an outer cold dust belt at ~135K and 20 - 40 AU from the primary, likely coincident with the disk imaged by Subaru (Currie et al. 2017), and a new second inner belt with temperature ~570K and an unusual, broad SED maximum in the 6 - 9 um region, tracing dust at 1.1 - 2.2 AU. An SED maximum at 6 - 9 um has been reported in just two other A-star systems, HD131488 and HD121191, both of ~10 Myr age (Melis et al. 2013). From Spitzer, we have also identified the ~12 Myr old A7V HD148567 system as having similar 5 - 35 um excess spectral features (Mittal et al. 2015). The Spitzer data allows us to rule out water emission and rule in carbonaceous materials - organics, carbonates, SiC - as the source of the 6 - 9 um excess. Assuming a common origin for the 4 young Astar systems' disks, we suggest they are experiencing an early era of carbon-rich planetesimal processing., 14 Pages, 2 Figures

There exists a population of defunct satellites in the geo-stationary arc that potentially pose a hazard to current and future operational satellites. These drifting, non-station-kept objects have a variety of ages and sizes, and many are trapped in libration orbits around the Earth׳s two gravitational potential wells (the non-spherical nature of the Earth gives rise to two geo-potential wells or “stable points” that affect objects in geostationary and geosynchronous orbits), whereas others were boosted to higher altitudes into so-called “graveyard” orbits. We have observed several of the approximately 49 objects in libration orbits about the Western stable point (R. Choc, T. Flohrer, and B. Bastida, “Classification of Geosynchronous Objects,” Issue 13, ESA/ESOC, February 2011), as well as objects in graveyard orbits. We have carried out an observational campaign utilizing The Aerospace Corporation׳s 3–13 µm Broadband Array Spectrograph System (BASS), as well as with several optical sensors to collect data on a representative sample of these objects at a variety of solar phase angles. Here we report on recent BASS observations of a retired satellite in the “graveyard” orbit, and compare them with data we had collected over six years ago, while the satellite was still active. Data are also presented on similar satellites that are still active. We describe our methods, the data collected, our results, and our future plans.

HD 166191 has been identified by several studies as hosting a rare and extremely bright warm debris disc with an additional outer cool disc component. However, an alternative interpretation is that the star hosts a disc that is currently in transition between a full gas disc and a largely gas-free debris disc. With the help of new optical to mid-IR spectra and Herschel imaging, we argue that the latter interpretation is supported in several ways: i) we show that HD 166191 is co-moving with the ~4 Myr-old Herbig Ae star HD 163296, suggesting that the two have the same age, ii) the disc spectrum of HD 166191 is well matched by a standard radiative transfer model of a gaseous protoplanetary disc with an inner hole, and iii) the HD 166191 mid-IR silicate feature is more consistent with similarly primordial objects. We note some potential issues with the debris disc interpretation that should be considered for such extreme objects, whose lifetime at the current brightness is mush shorter than the stellar age, or in the case of the outer component requires a mass comparable to the solid component of the Solar nebula. These aspects individually and collectively argue that HD 166191 is a 4-5 Myr old star that hosts a gaseous transition disc. Though it does not argue in favour of either scenario, we find strong evidence for 3-5 um disc variability. We place HD 166191 in context with discs at different evolutionary stages, showing that it is a potentially important object for understanding the protoplanetary to debris disc transition., Comment: accepted to MNRAS, fixed typos in abstract and axis label

We have imaged GM Aur with HST, detected its disk in scattered light at 1400A and 1650A, and compared these with observations at 3300A, 5550A, 1.1 microns, and 1.6 microns. The scattered light increases at shorter wavelengths. The radial surface brightness profile at 3300A shows no evidence of the 24AU radius cavity that has been previously observed in sub-mm observations. Comparison with dust grain opacity models indicates the surface of the entire disk is populated with sub-micron grains. We have compiled an SED from 0.1 microns to 1 mm, and used it to constrain a model of the star+disk system that includes the sub-mm cavity using the Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer code by Barbara Whitney. The best-fit model image indicates that the cavity should be detectable in the F330W bandpass if the cavity has been cleared of both large and small dust grains, but we do not detect it. The lack of an observed cavity can be explained by the presence of sub-microns grains interior to the sub-mm cavity wall. Optical surveys have identified a class of high area-to-mass ratio (HAMR) objects in the vicinity of the Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) ring. The exact origin and nature of these objects are not well known, although their proximity to the GEO belt poses a hazard to active GEO satellites. The prevalent conjecture is that many of these objects may be thermal materials shed from derelict spacecraft in ‘graveyard’ orbits above the GEO ring. Due to their high area-to-mass ratios and unknown attitude dynamics and material characteristics, solar radiation pressure (SRP) perturbs their orbits in ways that makes it difficult to predict their orbital trajectories over periods of time exceeding a week or less. To better understand and track these objects and infer their origins, we have made observations that allow us to determine physical characteristics that will improve the non-conservative force modeling used for orbit determination (OD) and prediction. Information on their temperatures, areas, emissivities, and albedos may be obtained from thermal infrared and visible measurements. Simultaneous observations in the thermal infrared and visible wavelengths may allow disentangling of projected area, albedo, and object emissivity. Further analysis and modeling of observational data on certain of the HAMR objects collected at the AMOS observatory 3.6 m AEOS telescope are presented. The thermal-IR spectra of these geosynchronous orbit objects acquired by the Broadband Array Spectrograph System (BASS) span wavelengths 3 to 13 μm and constitute a unique data set, providing a means of measuring object fluxes in the infrared and visible wavelengths. These, in turn, allow temperatures and emissivity-area products to be calculated, and in some cases provide information on rotation rates. We compare our observational results with the outputs of simple models, in terms of visible and infrared flux and orbital characteristics. The resulting temperatures and rotation rates are used in SRP acceleration models to demonstrate improvements in OD and prediction performance relative to models which assume default ambient temperature and static attitude dynamics. Additionally, we have the capability and plans to measure material properties with the same instrument in the lab as used at the telescope to facilitate direct comparisons.

The thermal-IR spectra of these low-earth orbit objects acquired by the Broadband Array Spectrograph System (BASS) span wavelengths 3–13 μm and constitute a unique data set, providing a means of measuring, as a function of time, object fluxes. These, in turn, allow temperatures and emissivity-area products to be calculated. In some instances we have also collected simultaneous filtered visible photometric data on the observed objects. The multi-wavelength observations of the objects provide possible clues as to the nature of the observed objects. We describe briefly the nature and status of the instrumental programs used to acquire the data, our data of record, our data analysis techniques, and our current results, as well as future plans.

In late 2003, the young eruptive variable star V1647 Orionis optically brightened by over 5 magnitudes, stayed bright for around 26 months, and then decline to its pre-outburst level. In August 2008 the star was reported to have unexpectedly brightened yet again and we herein present the first detailed observations of this new outburst. Photometrically, the star is now as bright as it ever was following the 2003 eruption. Spectroscopically, a pronounced P Cygni profile is again seen in Halpha with an absorption trough extending to -700 km/s. In the near-infrared, the spectrum now possesses very weak CO overtone bandhead absorption in contrast to the strong bandhead emission seen soon after the 2003 event. Water vapor absorption is also much stronger than previously seen. We discuss the current outburst below and relate it to the earlier event., 6 pages, 3 figures

The 3-13 μm spectra of Deimos and Phobos were obtained on the nights of 2003 August 19, 20, and 21 UT, within a week of opposition (August 28). Spectra in the 1.5-2.5 μm region were taken a few weeks earlier on July 26. Observations were made near greatest elongation for each satellite in order to minimize scattered light from Mars. The L, M, and narrowband N (10.2 μm) magnitudes for Deimos were 7.7 ± 0.1, 4.9 ± 0.1, and 0.79 ± 0.09, respectively. The L, M, and narrowband N (10.2 μm) magnitudes for Phobos were 6.4, 3.8, and -0.52, respectively, all ±0.07. The 5-12 μm color temperatures of Deimos and Phobos were 344 ± 5 and 357 ± 5 K, respectively, significantly higher than the blackbody thermal equilibrium temperature for either a fast rotator at Mars's heliocentric distance (237 K) or a slow rotator (282 K). The high brightness temperatures of Deimos and Phobos in the thermal infrared of 310-330 and 320-340 K, respectively, are not understood, but they are somewhat consistent with the high color temperatures. Within the errors, there was little evidence for spectral features indicative of surface composition, although there were some 1-2 σ variations that warrant further observations.

We present the first published spatially resolved images of Neptune's thermal emission. Our 7.7 and 11.7 μm images, taken on 2005 July 4 and 5 at the Gemini North telescope, show enhanced methane and ethane emission within 30° of the south pole. This bright polar region is the first direct imaging evidence for radiative forcing of Neptune's stratosphere, similar to that seen on Saturn. Enhanced emission from ethane, but not methane, also emerges from the planetary limb, suggesting differing vertical profiles. Stratospheric emissions are uncorrelated with tropospheric clouds seen in reflected sunlight in our near-simultaneous adaptive optics images at 1.6 and 2.2 μm taken with the Keck II telescope on 2005 July 5.

We present infrared spectroscopy of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi, obtained 11.81, 20.75 and 55.71 days following its 2006 eruption. The spectra are dominated by hydrogen recombination lines, together with HeI, OI and OII lines; the electron temperature of ~10^4 K implied by the recombination spectrum suggests that we are seeing primarily the wind of the red giant, ionized by the ultraviolet flash when RS Oph erupted. However, strong coronal emission lines (i.e. emission from fine structure transitions in ions having high ionization potential) are present in the last spectrum. These imply a temperature of 930000K for the coronal gas; this is in line with x-ray observations of the 2006 eruption. We present infrared spectroscopic and photometric observations of the nova V2468 Cyg covering the period from 2008 March 13 till 2008 November 11. The JHK spectra of the object have been taken from the Mount Abu Infrared Observatory using the Near-Infrared Imager/Spectrometer. Spectra from 0.8-5.2 micron are also presented that were obtained using the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and the SPEX instrument. The spectra are dominated by strong H I lines from the Brackett and Paschen series, Fe II, OI and CI lines in the initial days, typical of an Fe II type nova. The lines were broader in the period immediately after outburst with measured FWHM of 1800-2300 km/s for the Pa-beta and Br-gamma lines. These values narrowed to 1500-1600 km/s by 12 days from outburst. The spectra showed prominent He I lines at 1.0830 and 2.0581 micron together with H I and O I emission features after 36 days from outburst. Our IR observations show the comparatively broad emission lines, the rapid development of the spectrum to higher ionization, the early appearance of coronal lines, and the absence of dust emission, all features that indicate the hybrid nature of the nova. This is perhaps the most extensively observed example of a probable Fe IIb type nova at the infrared wavelengths. We also notice a short lived emission line of Fe II at 2.0888 micron which was present between April 9, 2008 to May 9, 2008. No dust emission is seen from the nova ejecta. We report 8- to 13-micron spectral observations of Neptune and Uranus from the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility spanning more than a decade. The spectroscopic data indicate a steady increase in Neptune's mean atmospheric 12-micron ethane emission from 1985 to 2003, followed by a slight decrease in 2004. The simplest explanation for the intensity variation is an increase in stratospheric effective temperature from 155 +/- 3 K in 1985 to 176 +/- 3 K in 2003 (an average rate of 1.2 K/year), and subsequent decrease to 165 +/- 3 K in 2004. We also detected variation of the overall spectral structure of the ethane band, specifically an apparent absorption structure in the central portion of the band; this structure arises from coarse spectral sampling coupled with a non-uniform response function within the detector elements. We also report a probable direct detection of ethane emission on Uranus. The deduced peak mole fraction is approximately an order of magnitude higher than previous upper limits for Uranus. The model fit suggests an effective temperature of 114 +/- 3 K for the globally-averaged stratosphere of Uranus, which is consistent with recent measurements indicative of seasonal variation., Accepted for publication in ApJ. 16 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

The return of the Genesis Sample Return Capsule (SRC) from the Earth’s L1 point on September 8, 2004, represents the first opportunity since the Apollo era to study the atmospheric entry of a meter-sized body at or above the Earth’s escape speed. Until now, reentry heating models are based on only one successful reentry with an instrumented vehicle at higher than escape speed, the 22 May 1965 NASA “FIRE 2” experiment. In preparation of an instrumented airborne and ground-based observing campaign, we examined the expected bolide radiation for the reentry of the Genesis SRC. We find that the expected emission spectrum consists mostly of blackbody emission from the SRC surface (T∼2630 K@peak heating), slightly skewed in shape because of a range of surface temperatures. At high enough spectral resolution, shock emission from nitrogen and oxygen atoms, as well as the first positive and first negative bands of N2 +, will stand out above this continuum. Carbon atom lines and the 389-nm CN band emission may also be detected, as well as the mid-IR 4.6-μm CO band. The ablation rate can be studied from the signature of trace sodium in the heat shield material, calibrated by the total amount of matter lost from the recovered shield. A pristine collection of the heat shield would also permit the sampling of products of ablation.

STIS white-light coronagraphic imaging has been carried out for 14 nearby, lightly reddened Herbig Ae stars, providingdataontheenvironmentsanddisksassociatedwiththesestars.Nodisksaredetectedinourdatawhenthe Herbig Ae starisaccompaniedbya stellarcompanion atr � 2 00 .Wefindthattheopticalvisibilityofprotoplanetary disks associated with Herbig Ae stars at r � 50 70 AU from the star is correlated with the strength of the mid-IR PAH features, particularly 6.2 � m. These features, like the FUV fluorescent H2 emission, trace the presence of material sufficiently far above the disk midplane that it is directly illuminated by the star’s FUV radiation. In contrast, measures of the bulk properties of the disk, including ongoing accretion activity, mass, and the submillimeter slope of the SED, do not correlate with the surface brightness of the optical nebulosity. Modelers have interpreted the appearance of the IR SED and the presence of emission from warm silicate grains at 10 � ma s a measure of geometrical shadowing by material in the disk near the dust sublimation radius of 0.5 AU. Geometrical shadowing sufficient to render a disk dark to distances as large as 500 AU from a star would require that the star be optically visible only if viewed essentially pole-on, in disagreement with our program star system inclinations. Rather than invoking shadowing to account for the optically dark disks, the correlation of the STIS detections with PAHemissionfeaturessuggestsacorrelationwithdiskflaringandananticorrelationwiththedegreeofdustsettling toward the midplane. If this correlation continues to lower levels, the STIS data suggest that improvements in coronagraph performance that suppress the residual scattered and diffracted stellar light by an additional factor of � 10 should render the majority of disks associated with nearby Herbig Ae stars detectable. FU Orionis stars are a small group of pre–main-sequence stars known for large-amplitude optical variability. These objects also exhibit multiwavelength phenomena suggestive of active accretion from a circumstellar disk. We present high spatial resolution mid-IR imaging and spectroscopy, submillimeter photometry, and 3–4 μm photometry of four FU Ori–class objects, RNO 1B and C, Z CMa, and Par 21, and one object classified as a pre–FU Ori star, V380 Ori. We resolve multiple IR sources and extended emission in the RNO 1B/C system, and we discuss in detail their association with disk activity and the source of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite far-IR and radio maser emission in this field. We derive dust temperatures and masses for all sources and discuss how dust composition and morphology is related to the evolutionary stage of these objects.

We present new observations of the FUV (1100-2200 Angstrom) radiation field and the near- to mid-IR (3--13.5 micron) spectral energy distribution (SED) of a sample of T Tauri stars selected on the basis of bright molecular disks (GM Aur, DM Tau, LkCa15). In each source we find evidence for Ly alpha induced H2 fluorescence and an additional source of FUV continuum emission below 1700 Angstroms. Comparison of the FUV spectra to a model of H2 excitation suggests that the strong continuum emission is due to electron impact excitation of H2. The ultimate source of this excitation is likely X-ray irradiation which creates hot photo-electrons mixed in the molecular layer. Analysis of the SED of each object finds the presence of inner disk gaps with sizes of a few AU in each of these young (~1 Myr) stellar systems. We propose that the presence of strong H2 continuum emission and inner disk clearing are related by the increased penetration power of high energy photons in gas rich regions with low grain opacity., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ Letters

We report 3 - 13 micron spectroscopy of 4 comets observed between August 2002 and February 2003: C/2002 O4 (Honig) on August 1, 2002, C/2002 V1 (NEAT) on Jan. 9 and 10, 2003, C/2002 X5 (Kudo-Fujikawa) on Jan. 9 and 10, 2003, and C/2002 Y1 (Juels-Holvorcem) on Feb. 20, 2003. In addition, we include data obtained much earlier on 69P/Taylor (February 9, 1998) but not previously published. For Comets Taylor, Honig, NEAT, and Kudo-Fujikawa, the silicate emission band was detected, being approximately 23%, 12%, 15%, and 10%, respectively, above the continuum. The data for Comet Juels-Holvorcem were of insufficient quality to detect the presence of a silicate band of comparable strength to the other three objects, and we place an upper limit of 24% on this feature. The silicate features in both NEAT and Kudo-Fujikawa contained structure indicating the presence of crystalline material. Combining these data with those of other comets, we confirm the correlation between silicate band strength and grain temperature of Gehrz & Ney (1992) and Williams et al. (1997) for dynamically new and long period comets, but the majority of Jupiter family objects may deviate from this relation. The limited data available on Jupiter family objects suggest that they may have silicate bands that are slightly different from the former objects. Finally, when compared to the silicate emission bands observed in pre-main sequence stars, the dynamically new and long period comets most closely resemble the more evolved stellar systems, while the limited data (in quantity and quality) on Jupiter family objects seem to suggest that these have spectra more like the less-evolved stars., 45 pages, 12 figures

We report on the results of a number of infrared spectra (0.8-2.5, 2.1-4.6, and 3-14 microns) of V838 Monocerotis, taken from a short time after discovery in 2002 January to about 14 months later, in early 2003. The spectrum evolved dramatically, changing from a quasi-photospheric stellar spectrum with weak atomic emission lines (some with P Cygni profiles) to one showing a wide range of deep absorption features indicative of a cool, extended atmosphere with a circumstellar dust shell. The early spectra showed lines of s-process elements, such as Sr II and Ba I. The later spectra showed absorption by gaseous H2O, CO, AlO, TiO, SiO, SO2, OH, VO, and SH, as well as a complex of emission near 10 microns reminiscent of silicate emission, with a central absorbing feature at 10:3 microns. Thus, V838 Mon appears to be oxygen-rich. A simple, spherically symmetric model of the system involving a central star with a two-component expanding circumstellar shell is presented that is able to explain the major molecular features and spectral energy distribution in the object's late stages. The derived shell mass and distance are 0.04 M(circle dot solar) and 9.2 kpc, respectively.

Following a successful deployment in 1999 and predictions of further Leonid stormsin 2001 and 2002, a new set of two airborne missions was prepared in the Leonid Multi-InstrumentAircraft Campaign. Geopolitical circumstances affected the scope of the 2001 mission more thanusual. The NKC-135 "FISTA" aircraft executed a CONUS single-plane deployment with 19 UScitizen researchers onboard out of Edwards AFB, CA. The researchers traveled to Alabama and,after 08:50 UT, slowly returned back to base on a westward trajectory at an altitude of 37,000ft. Non US citizen participants observed from various ground sites. The 1767-dust trail of comet55P/Tempel-Tuttle was well observed. Key results were: a) measurements of meteor flux todiscriminate among meteor storm prediction models; b) high resolution optical spectra that set astrong lower limit to the CN abundance in meteor plasma and measured plasma temperatures asa function of meteoroid mass; c) further mid-IR detections of meteors with simultaneous opticalimaging; d) HDTV recorded low-resolution optical spectra for studies of compositional anomalies inlarge cometary meteoroids; e) the surprising detection of persistent train emission in a slow and notso-bright Taurid fireball, as well as f) the observation of an elve at the peak of the storm. Resultsfrom ground-based efforts included flux measurements of the 1866 storm peak in Australia, the firsthigh frame-rate images of meteors showing a shock-like feature, and the detection of recombinationlines, the UV OH A-X band, and unidentifled near-IR emission in meteor persistent emissions. We present the first resolved near infrared imagery of the transition disk Oph IRS 48 (WLY 2-48), which was recently observed with ALMA to have a strongly asymmetric sub-millimeter flux distribution. H-band polarized intensity images show a $\sim$60AU radius scattered light cavity with two pronounced arcs of emission, one from Northeast to Southeast and one smaller, fainter and more distant arc in the Northwest. K-band scattered light imagery reveals a similar morphology, but with a clear third arc along the Southwestern rim of the disk cavity. This arc meets the Northwestern arc at nearly a right angle, revealing the presence of a spiral arm or local surface brightness deficit in the disk, and explaining the East-West brightness asymmetry in the H-band data. We also present 0.8-5.4$\mu$m IRTF SpeX spectra of this object, which allow us to constrain the spectral class to A0$\pm$1 and measure a low mass accretion rate of 10$^{-8.5}$M$_{\odot}$/yr, both consistent with previous estimates. We investigate a variety of reddening laws in order to fit the mutliwavelength SED of Oph IRS 48 and find a best fit consistent with a younger, higher luminosity star than previous estimates., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. 19 pages, 15 figures

The eruptive variable V838 Monocerotis gained notoriety in 2002 when it brightened nine magnitudes in a series of three outbursts and then rapidly evolved into an extremely cool supergiant. We present optical, near-IR, and mid-IR spectroscopic and photometric observations of V838 Monocerotis obtained between 2008 and 2012 at the Apache Point Observatory 3.5m, NASA IRTF 3m, and Gemini South 8m telescopes. We contemporaneously analyze the optical & IR spectroscopic properties of V838 Monocerotis to arrive at a revised spectral type L3 supergiant and effective temperature Teff~2000--2200 K. Because there are no existing optical observational data for L supergiants in the optical, we speculate that V838 Monocerotis may represent the prototype for L supergiants in this wavelength regime. We find a low level of Halpha emission present in the system, consistent with interaction between V838 Monocerotis and its B3V binary; however, we cannot rule out a stellar collision as the genesis event, which could result in the observed Halpha activity. Based upon a two-component blackbody fit to all wavelengths of our data, we conclude that, as of 2009, a shell of ejecta surrounded V838 Monocerotis at a radius of R=263+/-10 AU with a temperature of T=285+/-2 K. We present pre-perihelion infrared 8 to 31 micron spectrophotometric and imaging observations of comet C/2012 K1 (Pan-STARRS), a dynamically new Oort Cloud comet, conducted with NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) facility (+FORCAST) in 2014 June. As a "new" comet (first inner solar system passage), the coma grain population may be extremely pristine, unencumbered by a rime and insufficiently irradiated by the Sun to carbonize its surface organics. The comet exhibited a weak 10 micron silicate feature ~1.18 +/- 0.03 above the underlying best-fit 215.32 +/- 0.95 K continuum blackbody. Thermal modeling of the observed spectral energy distribution indicates that the coma grains are fractally solid with a porosity factor D = 3 and the peak in the grain size distribution, a_peak = 0.6 micron, large. The sub-micron coma grains are dominated by amorphous carbon, with a silicate-to-carbon ratio of 0.80 (+0.25) (- 0.20). The silicate crystalline mass fraction is 0.20 (+0.30) (-0.10), similar to with other dynamically new comets exhibiting weak 10 micron silicate features. The bolometric dust albedo of the coma dust is 0.14 +/- 0.01 at a phase angle of 34.76 degrees, and the average dust production rate, corrected to zero phase, at the epoch of our observations was Afrho ~ 5340~cm., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 5 table, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We analyze 3 epochs of ultraviolet (UV), optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of the Taurus transitional disk GM Aur using the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and the Infrared Telescope Facility SpeX spectrograph. Observations were separated by one week and 3 months in order to study variability over multiple timescales. We calculate accretion rates for each epoch of observations using the STIS spectra and find that those separated by one week had similar accretion rates (~1E-8 solar masses/yr) while the epoch obtained 3 months later had a substantially lower accretion rate (~4E-9 solar masses/yr). We find that the decline in accretion rate is caused by lower densities of material in the accretion flows, as opposed to a lower surface coverage of the accretion columns. During the low accretion rate epoch we also observe lower fluxes at both far UV (FUV) and IR wavelengths, which trace molecular gas and dust in the disk, respectively. We find that this can be explained by a lower dust and gas mass in the inner disk. We attribute the observed variability to inhomogeneities in the inner disk, near the corotation radius, where gas and dust may co-exist near the footprints of the magnetospheric flows. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as the largest space-based astronomical observatory with near- and mid-infrared instrumentation, will elucidate many mysterious aspects of comets. We summarize four cometary science themes especially suited for this telescope and its instrumentation: the drivers of cometary activity, comet nucleus heterogeneity, water ice in comae and on surfaces, and activity in faint comets and main-belt asteroids. With JWST, we can expect the most distant detections of gas, especially CO2, in what we now consider to be only moderately bright comets. For nearby comets, coma dust properties can be studied with their driving gases, measured simultaneously with the same instrument or contemporaneously with another. Studies of water ice and gas in the distant Solar System will help us test our understanding of cometary interiors and coma evolution. The question of cometary activity in main-belt comets will be further explored with the possibility of a direct detection of coma gas. We explore the technical approaches to these science cases and provide simple tools for estimating comet dust and gas brightness. Contemporaneous near-infrared (0.8–2.5 μm) and infrared (3–14 μm) spectroscopy is presented of the previously uncharacterized IRAS source 07077+1536. The data show it to be a carbon star embedded in a circumstellar dust envelope. The near-infrared spectrum displays molecular absorption features of C2, CN, and CO, while the 11 μm emission feature from SiC is present in the thermal infrared. The spectral energy distribution of IRAS 07077+1536 is similar to the so-called extreme carbon stars in that it consists primarily of a reddened stellar photosphere and thermal dust emission. However, the extinction is much less and the dust significantly warmer (~900 K vs. ~300 K) than in extreme carbon stars such as AFGL 3068. IRAS 07077+1536 is also unusually bright shortward of 0.5 μm, an aspect that could be due to variability but may indicate the presence of a binary companion or a foreground star.

IR spectroscopy and photometry in the 0.8–2.4 and 3–14 μmregions are reported for seven dates between March 21 1998 and July20 2000 UT. The shorter wavelength region displays a smooth continuum increasing to longerwavelengths that is indicative of the Wien tail of a Planck function. Only theHe I 1.0830 line is present early and it shows a P-Cygni profile which laterdisappears. The long wave spectra show a smooth continuum between 3 and 13μm that was well fit by a gray body at 1000 K. A weak, unidentifiedemission feature appears between 8 and 10 μm.

We present near-IR (NIR) and far-UV observations of the pre-transitional (gapped) disk in HD 169142 using NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility and Hubble Space Telescope. The combination of our data along with existing data sets into the broadband spectral energy distribution reveals variability of up to 45% between (is) approximately1.5-10 micrometers over a maximum timescale of 10 yr. All observations known to us separate into two distinct states corresponding to a high near-IR state in the pre-2000 epoch and a low state in the post-2000 epoch, indicating activity within the (is) approximately less than 1AU region of the disk. Through analysis of the Pa beta and Br gamma lines in our data we derive a mass accretion rate in 2013 May of M (is) approx. = (1.5-2.7) 10(exp -9) solar mass yr(exp -1).We present a theoretical modeling analysis of the disk in HD 169142 using Monte-Carlo radiative transfer simulation software to explore the conditions and perhaps signs of planetary formation in our collection of 24 yr of observations. We find that shifting the outer edge (r (is) approx. = 0.3AU) of the inner disk by 0.05AU toward the star (in simulation of accretion and/or sculpting by forming planets) successfully reproduces the shift in NIR flux. We establish that the (is) approximately 40-70AU dark ring imaged in the NIR by Quanz et al. and Momose et al. and at 7 mm by Osorio et al. may be reproduced with a 30% scaled density profile throughout the region, strengthening the link to this structure being dynamically cleared by one or more planetary mass bodies.

We report 3–14 μm spectroscopy of the nova V445 Puppis on 2001 January 31.45 UT using the Broadband Array Spectrograph System on the Infrared Telescope Facility, approximately 1 month after the object was discovered. The spectrum (W cm-2 μm-1) revealed only a smooth, featureless continuum that decreases monotonically with increasing wavelengths between 3 and 13.6 μm. Its slope is much shallower than the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of a blackbody. The spectrum is consistent with thermal emission from gray (constant) emissivity dust whose temperatures ranged from around 280 K to upward of 1300 K. IR magnitudes were L = 2.8, M = 1.6, and N = -0.27, all ±0.02. The presence of such strong IR continuum emission so early after the nova's outburst may suggest that this object has undergone previous outbursts and that we observed preexisting dust, at least in part

Thermal IR spectroscopy of Saturn's A and B rings in the 8- to 13-μm range reveals a smooth, Planck-like continuum with no spectral structure that could be attributed to optically thin water ice or silicate dust. The brightness temperatures of the A and B rings obtained by fitting a Planck function to the spectra were 90.3±0.9 and 90.5±0.6 K, respectively, in good agreement with and extending earlier photometric measurements.

Comet 55P/Tempel–Tuttle was observed between 3 an 14 μm using the Broadband Array Spectrograph System (BASS) on the NASA 3-m Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Mauna Kea. Observations were made February 8.25 and 9.25 1998 UT when the heliocentric distance of the comet was 1.03 AU and decreasing as the comet approached perihelion (February 28, 1998). The spectra from both nights showed no emission features indicative of silicates or other solid substances, and they showed no difference between the two nights. They were well fit with a 330 K blackbody between 3 and 13 μm. The 330 K color temperature was 60 K above the equilibrium blackbody temperature of 274 K. These results are somewhat unusual for a comet, because most comets show silicate emission, indicative of small olivine- and/or pyroxene-based particles. We present a simple analysis of thermal emission and show that some useful though limited knowledge can be inferred about the particles' radiative properties.

The debris disks surrounding the pre-main sequence stars HD 31648 and HD 163296 were observed spectroscopically between 3 and 14 microns. Both possess a silicate emission feature at 10 microns which resembles that of the star beta Pictoris and those observed in solar system comets. The structure of the band is consistent with a mixture of olivine and pyroxene material, plus an underlying continuum of unspecified origin. The similarity in both size and structure of the silicate band suggests that the material in these systems had a processing history similar to that in our own solar system prior to the time that the grains were incorporated into comets.

We present intermediate-resolution (λ/Δλ ≈ 60) spectra of 21 ultracompact H II regions in the spectral range from 3 to 13 μm. The 9.7 μm silicate feature is seen in absorption, and the 12.8 μm [Ne II] fine structure line is seen in emission toward most of the observed nebulae. The strengths of both features vary enormously from nebula to nebula, suggesting large variations in the column densities of both Ne II and silicates toward these objects. Near-IR features attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are detected in six of the sources. Spherically symmetric dust shell models were calculated to obtain the best fits to those nebulae for which distances are known, and spectral energy distributions are available in the range of 1 mm to 1 μm. The models are used to infer properties of the dust cocoon such as the distribution of density and temperature with radius, shell thickness, outer shell radius, and dust abundances. Our results are consistent with previous models that predict large dust cocoons with central cavities, sharp temperature gradients, and approximately constant density in the outer regions.

HD 50138 is a B[e] star surrounded by a large amount of circumstellar gas and dust. Its spectrum shows characteristics which may indicate either a pre- or a post-main-sequence system. Mapping the kinematics of the gas in the inner few au of the system contributes to a better understanding of its physical nature. We present the first high spatial and spectral resolution interferometric observations of the Br-gamma line of HD~50138, obtained with VLTI/AMBER. The line emission originates from a region more compact (up to 3 au) than the continuum-emitting region. Blue- and red-shifted emission originates from the two different hemispheres of an elongated structure perpendicular to the polarization angle. The velocity of the emitting medium decreases radially. An overall offset along the NW direction between the line- and continuum-emitting regions is observed. We compare the data with a geometric model of a thin Keplerian disk and a spherical halo on top of a Gaussian continuum. Most of the data are well reproduced by this model, except for the variability, the global offset and the visibility at the systemic velocity. The evolutionary state of the system is discussed; most diagnostics are ambiguous and may point either to a post-main-sequence or a pre-main-sequence nature., Comment: 19 pages, 12 images. Redshifted absorption profiles that resemble the high-velocity circumstellar gas features in the spectrum of β Pictoris have been detected in IUE data for the 10 Myr old Herbig Be star, HD 100546, on 1995 March 7. In addition to Mg II, Si II, and other refractory species similar to those seen in β Pic, the HD 100546 spectra are rich in accreting gas profiles from neutral atomic gas, including C I and O I, as well as mildly refractory species such as Zn II and S II. The presence of accreting gas profiles, including neutral atomic gas, is consistent with detection of comae of star-grazing bodies potentially resembling either comets or asteroids. Overall, the IUE data for HD 100546 are consistent with the planetesimals in this system being more volatile-rich and magnesium-rich than similar bodies in the β Pic system.

The dust coma of comet Hale-Bopp was observed in the thermal infrared over a wide range in solar heating (R = 4.9–0.9 AU) and over the full wavelength range from 3 μm to 160 μm. Unusual early activity produced an extensive coma containing small warm refractory grains; already at 4.9 AU, the 10 μm silicate emission feature was strong and the color temperature was 30% above the equilibrium blackbody temperature. Near perihelion the high color temperature, strong silicate feature, and high albedo indicated a smaller mean grain size than in other comets. The 8–13 μm spectra revealed a silicate emission feature similar in shape to that seen in P/Halley and several new and long period comets. Detailed spectral structure in the feature was consistent over time and with different instruments; the main peaks occur at 9.3, 10.0 and 11.2 μm. These peaks can be identified with olivine and pyroxene minerals, linking the comet dust to the anhydrous chondritic aggregate interplanetary dust particles. Spectra at 16–40 μm taken with the ISO SWS displayed pronounced emission peaks due to Mg-rich crystalline olivine, consistent with the 11.2 μm peak.
