Using the published KTeV samples of K_L --> pi^{\pm} e^{\mp} nu and K_L --> pi^{\pm} mu^{\mp} nu decays [1], we perform a reanalysis of the scalar and vector form factors based on the dispersive parameterization [2,3]. We obtain phase space integrals I^e_K = 0.15446 \pm 0.00025 and I^{mu}_K = 0.10219 \pm 0.00025. For the scalar form factor parameterization, the only free parameter is the normalized form factor value at the Callan-Treiman point (C); our best fit results in ln C = 0.1915 \pm 0.0122. We also study the sensitivity of C to different parametrizations of the vector form factor. The results for the phase space integrals and C are then used to make tests of the Standard Model. Finally, we compare our results with lattice QCD calculations of F_K/F_pi and f_+(0)., 9 pages, 3 figures, to be published in PRD

This Technical Design Report (TDR) describes the preliminary design of the NOνA accelerator upgrades, NOνA detectors, detector halls and detector sites. Compared to the March 2006 and November 2006 NOνA Conceptual Design Reports (CDR), critical value engineering studies have been completed and the alternatives still active in the CDR have been narrowed to achieve a preliminary technical design ready for a Critical Decision 2 review. Many aspects of NOνA described this TDR are complete to a level far beyond a preliminary design. In particular, the access road to the NOvA Far Detector site in Minnesota has an advanced technical design at a level appropriate for a Critical Decision 3a review. Several components of the accelerator upgrade and new neutrino detectors also have advanced technical designs appropriate for a Critical Decision 3a review.

Main mine fan installations at underground coal mines in the USA have been designed to comply with regulations with little attention paid to aerodynamic optimisation. Recent field testing has indicated that significant pressure loss reductions and improved fan performance can be attained by proper design of the shaft collar, inlet ductwork, self-closing doors and fan diffuser arrangements. Providing a rounded transition at the shaft collar, sufficient cross-sectional areas in the inlet ductwork to limit air velocities to 12.7 m/s and a two- to three-fan-diameter length of straight duct at the fan inlet will create more uniform airflow through the fan. For parallel fan systems, siting the fans as close together as possible on one side of the shaft is recommended. Differences in material costs, operating costs and aerodynamic performance should be evaluated for alternative ductwork arrangements and automatic closing door systems before designing and selecting a system. Our study of polymorphic light eruption (PLE) had several aims. First we wanted to determine the value of screening investigations and of referral onwards to a photobioiogy unit. We also assessed the effectiveness of desensitization with PUVA or UVB. Routine screening investigations were evaluated and we conclude that both the antinuclear factor and extractable nuclear antigens (Ro and La) should be tested in all patients. as LE may cause diagnostic contusion with PLE. Of our patients, 66% were referred to a specialist unit for phototesting. UVA provocation testing was positive in 62% of them and monochromator testing was abnormal in 28%. Postal questionnaires were completed by 50 (85%) of the 59 patients with PLE who had attended our unit. After desensitization. 84% of patients had improved. However, the value of phototesting patients with is less clear. Referral for phototesting should perhaps be limited to those in whom diagnostic doubt remains after careful history taking and testing for autoantibodies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A compilation is provided of written summaries of each panellist's opening presentation on the impact of the regulations on mine operations and worker health. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting in significant air leakage losses. Where the problem is severe complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to air flow, while yielding to strata convergence. - Abstract
The D0 experiment enjoyed a very successful data-collection run at the Fermilab Tevatron collider between 1992 and 1996. Since then, the detector has been upgraded to take advantage of improvements to the Tevatron and to enhance its physics capabilities. We describe the new elements of the detector, including the silicon microstrip tracker, central fiber tracker, solenoidal magnet, preshower detectors, forward muon detector, and forward proton detector. The uranium/liquid-argon calorimeters and central muon detector, remaining from Run I, are discussed briefly. We also present the associated electronics, triggering, and data acquisition systems, along with the design and implementation of software specific to D0.
