Abstract

The Large Hadron Collider will soon undergo an upgrade to increase its luminosity by a factor of ~10 [1]. A crucial part of this upgrade will be replacement of the NbTi focusing magnets with Nb3Sn magnets that achieve a ~50% increase in the field strength. This will be the first ever large-scale implementation of Nb3Sn magnets in a particle accelerator. The High-Luminosity LHC Upgrade, HL-LHC is a CERN project with a world-wide collaboration. It is under construction and utilizes Nb3Sn Magnets (named MQXF) as key ingredients to increase tenfold the integrated luminosity delivered to the CMS and ATLAS experiments in the next decade. The HL-LHC AUP is the US effort to contribute approximately 50% of the low-beta focusing magnets and crab cavities for the HL-LHC. This paper will present the program to fabricate the Nb3Sn superconducting magnets. Abstract

Under the U.S. High Luminosity LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (HL-LHC AUP), the 150 mm bore, high-field Nb3Sn low-\b{eta} MQXFA quadrupole magnets are being fabricated, assembled and tested, in the context of the CERN Hi-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade. These magnets have 4.2 m magnetic length and 4.56 m long iron yoke. To date, eight MQXFA magnets have been tested. One of the magnets additionally underwent a successful endurance test with 40 triggered quenches, and two magnets did not perform as expected. This work summarizes for the first time the available strain gauge data from eight identical Nb3Sn MQXFA tested magnets, focusing on the endurance test, and on a possible cause of underperformance of the two magnets that did not pass the vertical test. We applied methods to prevent this from happening in future MQXFA magnets, which shown to be effective for last two tested magnets.

Abstract

By the end of October 2022, the US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP) had completed fabrication of ten MQXFA magnets and tested eight of them. The MQXFA magnets are the low beta quadrupole magnets to be used in the Q1 and Q3 Inner Triplet elements of the High Luminosity LHC. This AUP effort is shared by BNL, Fermilab, and LBNL, with strand verification tests at NHMFL. An important step of the AUP QA plan is the testing of MQXFA magnets in a vertical cryostat at BNL. The acceptance criteria that could be tested at BNL were all met by the first four production magnets (MQXFA03-MQXFA06). Subsequently, two magnets (MQXFA07 and MQXFA08) did not meet some criteria and were disassembled. Lessons learned during the disassembly of MQXFA07 caused a revision to the assembly specifications that were used for MQXFA10 and subsequent magnets. In this paper, we present a summary of: 1) the fabrication and test data of all the MQXFA magnets; 2) the analysis of MQXFA07/A08 test results with characterization of the limiting mechanism; 3) the outcome of the investigation, including the lessons learned during MQXFA07 disassembly; and 4) the finite element analysis correlating observations with test performance.

6. A Sum-Rules Analysis of Next-to-Leading-Order (NLO) QCD Perturbative Contributions to a $J^{PC}=0^{+-}$, $du\bar{d}\bar{u}$ Tetraquark Correlator

Abstract

We calculated next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD perturbative contributions to a $J^{PC}=0^{+-}$, $d u\bar d\bar u$ tetraquark (diquark-antidiquark) correlator in the chiral limit of massless $u$ and $d$ quarks. At NLO, there are four quark self-energy diagrams and six gluon-exchange diagrams. Nonlocal divergences were cancelled using diagrammatic renormalization. Dimensionally regularized integrals were numerically computed using pySecDec. The combination of pySecDec with diagrammatic renormalization establishes a valuable new methodology for NLO calculations of QCD correlation functions. Compared to leading-order (LO) perturbation theory, we found that NLO perturbation theory is significant. To quantify the impact of NLO perturbation theory on physical predictions, we computed NLO perturbative contributions to QCD Laplace, Gaussian, and finite-energy sum rules. Using QCD sum rules, we determined upper and lower bounds on the $0^{+-}$, $d u\bar d\bar u$ tetraquark ground-state mass, $M$: at NLO in perturbation theory, we found $2.2~\text{GeV}\lesssim M\leq 4.2~\text{GeV}$ whereas, at LO, we found $2.4~\text{GeV}\lesssim M\leq 4.6~\text{GeV}$. This mass range suggests the possibility of mixing between $0^{+-}$, light-quark (i.e., $u$ and $d$ quarks) hybrid and $d u\bar d\bar u$ tetraquark states. Taking into account uncertainties in QCD parameters, we found no evidence for a $0^{+-}$, $d u\bar d\bar u$ tetraquark under 1.9 GeV., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

The genes that encode the targets of most therapies do not have rare variants with large-effect or common variants with moderate effects on the biomarker reflecting the pharmacologic action of the corresponding therapy. Therefore, providing genetic target validation for most therapies is challenging. Novel methods are being developed to combine multiple variants in the gene encoding the target of a therapy that are weakly associated with the biomarker reflecting the pharmacologic action of that therapy into a genetic score that can be used as an adequate instrumental variable. We describe one approach to solve this important problem.

Abstract

The United States Environmental Protection Agency held an international two-day workshop in June 2018 to deliberate possible performance targets for non-regulatory fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) air sensors. The need for a workshop arose from the lack of any market-wide manufacturer requirement for Ozone documented sensor performance evaluations, the lack of any independent third party or government-based sensor performance certification program, and uncertainty among all users as to the general usability of air sensor data. A multi-sector subject matter expert panel was assembled to facilitate an open discussion on these issues with multiple stakeholders. This summary provides an overview of the workshop purpose, key findings from the deliberations, and considerations for future actions specific to sensors. Important findings concerning PM2.5 and O3 sensors included the lack of consistent performance indicators and statistical metrics as well as highly variable data quality requirements depending on the intended use. While the workshop did not attempt to yield consensus on any topic, a key message was that a number of possible future actions would be beneficial to all stakeholders regarding sensor technologies. These included documentation of best practices, sharing quality assurance results along with sensor data, and the development of a common performance target lexicon, performance targets, and test protocols.

14. Gain and Bandwidth Enhanced Single Cavity Backed Staggered Microstrip Antenna.

Abstract

This paper presents a staggered microstrip antenna (MSA) featuring a single cavity-backed design to improve gain and bandwidth (BW). The antenna features a simple geometry consisting of three small rectangular patches: one centrally located and two positioned on either side, connected by a narrow strip on an air-suspended substrate with a cavity backing. Two resonant modes are generated by offsetting the adjacent patches relative to the central patch, resulting in a broad impedance bandwidth (BW). The single cavity structure is achieved by folding the extended ground plane upwards around the suspended substrate to optimize radiation. This staggered configuration is connected at the center using a short strip key to achieve dual resonant modes, which broadens the BW. Also, the enclosed symmetrical cavity improves the back radiation, resulting in a stable gain ranging from 9.52 to 10.1 dBi across an impedance BW of 13.15% within the band of 4.83 to 5.51 GHz. The symmetrical patch arrangement along the longitudinal axis improves radiation efficiency to over 90% throughout the impedance BW, producing a broadside radiation pattern. This uniqueness of the proposed configuration using both staggered and cavity backing structures makes antenna geometry more promising than the conventional protruding antennas. Abstract

This letter presents a methodology for the design of high-performance miniaturized Circular Power Dividers (CPDs) for wideband applications. To accomplish this objective, annular slots are strategically incorporated into patch and the ground plane of CPDs. This, in turn, increases the effective path length of the surface current flowing across the patch. This yields miniaturization, improved impedance matching, reduced insertion loss and increased isolation over a larger bandwidth. A mathematical model is developed for the design of the proposed configuration called Circular power dividers with Defected Ground Plane(CDGP). The presented model has been verified through various simulations and practical measurements. By implementing this approach, a substantial miniaturization of approximately 83% and more than threefold increase in bandwidth has been achieved when compared with non-slotted CPDs. Moreover, there is improvement in insertion loss, isolation, and return loss as well. There is good agreement between the mathematical model, simulation results and measured parameters. Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive overview of Gallium nitride (GaN)-based power amplifier (PA) design for various frequency bands. GaN-based technology has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional silicon-based amplifiers due to its superior performance characteristics, which are discussed in this paper. This paper also discusses the key design parameters and challenges associated with PA design. Various design techniques and topologies for GaN power amplifiers are explored besides addressing theoretical considerations of PA design along with a complete systematic design procedure for L-Band amplifier using the wolfspeed large signal GaN HEMT model. To further demonstrate the useful methodology, the designs of S-band and C-band PAs are also presented. GaN-based devices are very promising candidates for high-power applications. 36. The Design and Analysis of a 25-Watt Broad-Band GaN HEMT-Based Power Amplifier.

Abstract

This paper presents the novel design and analysis of a 25 W broadband Class-AB GaN HEMT-based power amplifier working over 0.9–1.7 GHz. A large signal model of the Wolfspeed-make GaN HEMT CG2H40025 has been used in this design. The comprehensive design process has been carried out with the help of the Advanced Design System software by Keysight. Instead of conjugately matching the load and source impedance obtained from load-pull analysis of a nonlinear model of CG2H40025, the value of load and source impedance has been tuned with the help of a novel design approach of an ideal matching design approach. Thus, to achieve an output power of more than 25 W and a flat large signal gain of 15.425 ± 0.375 dB, a novel design approach has been employed to create input and output matching networks, maintaining a lower Q value results in broad bandwidth and for determining the load and source impedances. The circuit has been fabricated on Roger's substrate RO4350B having a dielectric constant of 3.66 and a loss tangent of 0.0031. The unique design approach based on electromagnetic simulation of the circuit at each design step yielded experimental results that agreed very well with the simulated results. The fabricated power amplifier achieves a power-added efficiency of over 54.78% and a drain efficiency of over 55.45% throughout the entire frequency range. It also delivers a maximum output power of 32.18 W at 1.3 GHz. This power amplifier is developed for L-band Foliage Penetrating Radar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper concludes by recommending relationship constellations as an innovative solution to the problems associated with cross gender mentoring dyads. Implications for mentoring in Indian organizations are discussed in light of the proposed recommendations.

Abstract

This paper presents descriptive results of a pioneering and exploratory study of mentoring among law faculty at American Bar Association (ABA) approved law schools. The findings are discussed and reconciled using a focused review of the mentoring literature addressing gender and race. The purpose of this paper is to present Project CREW--a novel and innovative collaborative career counseling program that links educational attainment and skills development to community-based workforce development. A review of the literature on career development is provided along with a discussion of how Project CREW's model and program theory aligns with the literature. The paper concludes by providing a program evaluation framework to guide the systematic assessment of Project CREW.
