An important goal of dental hygiene education is graduating clinically competent practitioners. Much of the clinical curriculum includes process and product evaluations that monitor and assess dental hygiene students' clinical abilities. While graduation from an accredited program should be an indicator of entry level competency, state and/or regional clinical boards traditionally determine who has the skills necessary to enter the professional workplace. The purpose of this study was to determine the success rate of applicants on the Western Regional Examining Board (WREB) on their first and second attempts and the role of remediation in affecting the success rates on the second attempt. A survey was sent to 18 dental hygiene schools that participated in the WREB examination from 1997 to 1999. Thirty-nine percent (N=7) returned the survey. There were a total of 311 graduates from the responding programs examined by WREB during this time. the breakdown of graduates examined per year was 96 in 1997, 90 in 1998, and 125 in 1999. The success rate for graduates taking the exam for the first time was 89% (N=277). Thirty-two of the 33 graduates that took WREB a second time had no remedial clinical training prior to the second exam. There was a 97% (N=32) success rate on the second exam. The time lapse between the first and second exams was over two months. While this is a small sample size, these results are indicative of previously reported data from dental clinical boards that question the validity of clinical examination for licensure. Much of the clinical curriculum includes process and product evaluations that monitor and assess dental hygiene students' clinical abilities. While graduation from an accredited program should be an indicator of professional entry level competency, state and/or regional clinical board examinations traditionally have determined who has the skill necessary to enter the professional workplace. The purpose of this study was to determine the success rates of applicants who took clinical board exams on their first, second, and third attempts and the role of remediation in affecting the success rates following unsuccessful attempts. A survey was sent to 259 dental hygiene schools in the United States, and was returned by 58% (N=150). A total of 7,538 graduates from the responding programs took board examinations during the 1997-99 time period. The breakdown of graduates taking the exam per year was 2,313 in 1997; 2,571 in 1998; and 2,654 in 1999. The success rate for graduates taking the exam for the first time was 88.6% (N=6675). Sixty-six percent of the schools (N= 150) reported providing no remedial clinical training prior to the second exam. There was an 88.56% (N=627) success rate on the second exam. Forty-seven percent of the schools (N=18) reported providing no remedial clinical training prior to the third exam. There was an 83% success rate on the third exam. Schools reported patient selection as the primary reason for unsuccessful attempts. The author shares how she celebrated the Christmas of 1945. She was diagnosed with Bright's disease and was sent to the Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky before the holidays. Contrary to what she thought, the hospital was a nice place with cheerful Christmas decorations. She was allowed to go home on Christmas eve to be with her family on the condition that she would return the next evening.
