Abstract

The goal of the Open Cluster Chemical Abundances and Mapping (OCCAM) survey is to constrain key Galactic dynamic and chemical evolution parameters by the construction and analysis of a large, comprehensive, uniform data set of infrared spectra for stars in hundreds of open clusters. This sixth contribution from the OCCAM survey presents analysis of SDSS/APOGEE Data Release 17 (DR17) results for a sample of stars in 150 open clusters, 94 of which we designate to be "high quality'' based on the appearance of their color-magnitude diagram. We find the APOGEE DR17-derived [Fe/H] values to be in good agreement with those from previous high resolution spectroscopic open cluster abundance studies. Using a subset of the high quality sample, the Galactic abundance gradients were measured for 16 chemical elements, including [Fe/H], for both Galactocentric radius ($R_{GC}$) and guiding center radius ($R_{Guide}$). We find an overall Galactic [Fe/H] vs $R_{GC}$ gradient of $-0.073 \pm 0.002$ dex/kpc over the range of $6 < R_{GC} < 11.5$ kpc, and a similar gradient is found for [Fe/H] versus $R_{Guide}$. Significant Galactic abundance gradients are also noted for O, Mg, S, Ca, Mn, Na, Al, K and Ce. Abstract

Open clusters are key chemical and age tracers of Milky Way evolution. While open clusters provide significant constraints on galaxy evolution, their use has been limited due to discrepancies in measuring abundances from different studies. We analyze medium resolution (R~19,000) CTIO/Hydra spectra of giant stars in 58 open clusters using The Cannon to determine [Fe/H], [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Al/Fe], and [O/Fe]. This work adds an additional 55 primarily southern hemisphere open clusters calibrated to the SDSS/APOGEE DR16 metallicity system. This uniform analysis is compared to previous studies [Fe/H] measurements for 23 clusters and we present spectroscopic metallicities for the first time for 35 open clusters., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, astronomical journal accepted

Abstract

This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper (MWM), Local Volume Mapper (LVM) and Black Hole Mapper (BHM) surveys., Comment: 40 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables. 8. Exploring Mathematics Vocabulary Alignment in a Future Elementary Teacher's Trajectory: A Case Study

Abstract

This qualitative case study explored an elementary foundations mathematics course and the mathematics vocabulary elementary pre-service teachers (PSTs) encounter at various stages in their preparation as mediated by curriculum, standards, and assessment materials. Guided by the theoretical lens of a constructivism-informed conceptual framework, text analyses indicated varying degrees of alignment of mathematics vocabulary when comparing across the materials gathered from different points in PSTs' preparation and future careers as educators. Further investigation indicated that considering alignment as a process provided possible opportunities for continued curricular improvement related to promoting mathematics vocabulary for elementary PSTs.

Abstract

This paper documents the sixteenth data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the southern hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. Abstract

In this qualitative, grounded theory, pedagogical action research study, we, as mathematics teacher educators, sought to develop a conceptual framework in which we could help elementary pre-service teachers (PSTs) construct understanding of, and then fluently use, mathematics vocabulary essential to PSTs' future work as elementary teachers. The resulting Guided Mathematics Vocabulary (GMaV) Conceptual Framework represents growth in our PSTs' constructed knowledge of mathematics vocabulary as the intersection of our explicit mathematics vocabulary focus using contextualized problems embedded within guided notes as a scaffolding device. With the GMaV framework, we will then be able to conduct future inquiry into this conceptualization of our PSTs' learning process to test our theoretical understanding of how our PSTs are understanding mathematics vocabulary.

16. What Does It Mean to Critique? An Exploration of the Types of Critiques Promoted in Seventh-Grade Mathematics Curriculum and Assessment Materials

While research in mathematics education has shown that mathematics assessments are highly consequential, traditional assessments often lag behind advancements in instructional methods. One such advancement is the promotion of mathematical habits of mind such as students' abilities to critique others' reasoning. This study explored the use of student work embedded in seventh-grade curriculum-based mathematics assessment tasks as a mechanism for critiquing others' thinking. The researcher investigated the prevalence and nature of student work in assessment tasks as compared to textbook tasks from five seventh-grade, Common Core State Standards for Mathematics-aligned curriculum series. The text analyses findings revealed that while there were multiple critique types in student work across both assessment and textbook tasks, there were substantial differences between students' opportunities to make sense of someone else's mathematical thinking in curriculum-based assessments as compared to the student textbooks. These findings reinforced prior curriculum and assessment research that found assessment often lags behind instructional methods.

Abstract

The elegant solutions to the strong CP problem predict the existence of a particle called axion. Thus, the search for axion like particles (ALP) has been an ongoing endeavor. The possibility that these axion like particles couple to photons in presence of magnetic field gives rise to a technique of detecting these particles known as light shining through a wall (LSW). Mississippi State Axion Search (MASS) is an experiment employing the LSW technique in search for axion like particles. The apparatus consists of two radio frequency (RF) cavities, both under the influence of strong magnetic field and separated by a lead wall. While one of the cavities houses a strong RF generator, the other cavity houses the detector systems. The MASS apparatus looks for excesses in RF photons that tunnel through the wall as a signature of candidate axion-like particles. Reducing the flow rate of sinks with rapid water inflow and/or elimination of obstruction leading to slow outflow was effective in preventing dispersal of fluorescence and gram-negative bacilli. Abstract

In this pedagogical action research study, we, as post-secondary mathematics teacher educators, built on an existing effort to improve pre-service teachers' mathematical vocabulary understandings by intentionally addressing their struggles related to polygonal area formulas. Utilizing cognitive load theory and Bruner's levels of developmental learning, we adapted and refined an existing "Area of Polygons" lesson to eliminate extraneous elements and scaffold the introduction of essential elements in the context of a cognitively engaging activity. Comparing our resulting lesson components to existing literature on polygonal area, we found two main approaches towards exploring area of polygons. Both approaches emphasized conservation of polygonal area with one focused on the details of attributes and square units and the other focused on comparisons of areas of figures. We discuss the implications of these approaches and the use of cognitive load theory in tandem with Bruner's levels for future curriculum redesign. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.
