Abstract

This study used three different classification models, namely Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest Machine (RFM), and Maximum Likelihood (ML) for classification of Landsat (7 & 8), and Sentinel-2A data sets. Each case's area of interest (AOI) and number of training sets (within fixed AOI of Chennai district boundary) were considered equal. Land use class change was observed because of rapid urbanization and developmental activities under urbanization, and the LULC was monitored using the ArcGIS Pro platform for 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020. The overall accuracy (OA) of the first, second, and third was 89%, 88%, 82%, 80% under RF, and 87%, 85%, 79%, 80% under SVM. However, the ML classifier provided the OA as 82%, 77%, 76%, 66% for 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020, respectively. The Kappa coefficient (K) was calculated under the first, second, and third, as 84%, 79%, 75%, 72%, under RF, and 80%, 78%, 71%, 67% under SVM. However, the ML provided a K value of 77%, 67%, 67%, 57% for 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020. Based on the quantitative assessments, the RF classifier showed good accuracy, then SVM and ML in classifications of fixed AOI with fixed training sets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While L. donovani infection is restricted to the Indian subcontinent and East Africa, where transmission is anthroponotic, Leishmania infantum occurs in Europe, North Africa, and parts of Latin America, where it is zoonotic in nature with dogs as reservoir hosts. Though the incidence of VL caused by L. infantum has been on the decline, L. donovani continues to cause epidemics periodically. By and large, a small proportion of L. donovani infection manifests as clinical disease but majority of the infected individuals remain asymptomatic and contribute to the perpetuation of the VL transmission cycle via the sand fly vector. This is one of the major stumbling blocks to World Health Organization initiatives to eliminate this deadly disease by 2020. These parasites reside within the host macrophages and impair the immune system of the infected individual, which ultimately results in marked immunosuppression. In the absence of any safe and effective vector control measure, attempts have been made to design therapeutic vaccine(s) that can exclusively target infected macrophages. So far, two vaccines – a glycoprotein complex from L. donovani promastigote, fucose–mannose ligand with saponin, commercialized as Leishmune®, as well as a polyprotein vaccine formulation, Leish-111f + monophosphoryl lipid A plus squalene emulsion in combination with glucantime, have been successfully evaluated for their immunotherapeutic potential against canine VL. However, encouraging results obtained from several experimental trials so far against human VL are still to be translated clinically. This review provides an overview on the various strategies tried and tested for developing therapeutic vaccines against this dreaded disease. Abstract

Study investigated infection of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) in paired tissues viz. ileum and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) from 74 goats using histopathology, acid fast staining of tissue sections, fluorescent antibody test (FAT), IS900 tissue PCR and culture. Histopathology of H&E stained tissue sections revealed variable grades of lesions of Johne's disease (JD) in 37 (50.0%) ileae and 21 (28.4%) MLN. In AFB staining, 16 (21.6%) intestine and 10 (13.5%) MLN revealed presence of acid fast bacilli indistinguishable to MAP. Thirteen (17.5%) intestine and 9 (12.1%) MLN were positive in FAT. Eleven (14.8%) intestine and 7 (9.4%) MLN were positive by IS900 tissue PCR, whereas 7 (9.5%) intestine and 8 (10.8%) MLN were positive in culture. The study showed that sensitivity of histopathology (H&E staining) was highest as compared to other routine tests for the diagnosis of MAP infection in tissues of goats died (irrespective of cause of deaths) during study period from goat herds endemic for Johne's disease. Lower sensitivity of FAT than histology was due to the strong cell mediated immunity exhibited by MAP. Though difference was not significant between sensitivities of FAT and PCR, FAT and AFB staining, and agreement was very good; however, results of the study suggested, that FAT may be a useful test to improve the diagnostic efficacy of caprine Johne's disease and more effective in the detection of grade I lesions as compared to culture and PCR. Study also showed that it was essential to collect both tissues (intestines and MLNs) for the diagnosis of MAP infection at necropsy.

Abstract

Physical modification of starches using dry heating, gamma and electron beam irradiation are considered greener and more cost effective than using crosslinking chemicals for starch modification. Chemical modification of starches generates lot of downstream waste. Alternatively, dry heating of starches can also be utilized to influence hydrolysis as well as crosslinking of chains and requires no catalyst. Gamma and electron beam irradiation although used largely for preservation of foods can introduce carboxyl groups into starch molecules as well as degrade starch chains. Gamma and electron beam irradiation can hydrolyze as well as cross link starches which can have various applications in food and process industries. Irradiation and dry heating are promising techniques and can be used in conjunction with other modifications type for making specialty and resistant starches. To the best of our knowledge dry heating of starches has not been reviewed. Need was also felt to critically review irradiation techniques since there are many ongoing debates on its implications.
