Se aplicó un esquema de inversión iterativo, inicialmente desarrollado por Hashida y Shimazaki (1984) y posteriormente modificado por Joshi et al., (2010), para estimar el factor de calidad de onda corta tridimensional, Qs (f), del centro-sur del Golfo de California, México. Es un área de 230 x 288 km que se divide en 108 bloques rectangulares de diferentes Qs (f). Se utilizó 25 terremotos bien ubicados registrados en tres estaciones de banda ancha de la red regional RESBAN operada por CICESE (Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada, Baja California) y tres Sismógrafos de Fondo Oceánico (OBS, por sus siglas en inglés) de un conjunto del Experimento del Fondo Oceánico del Mar de Cortés (SCOOBA, por sus siglas en inglés). Este conjunto de datos permitió obtener estimaciones de Qs (f) de diferentes bloques, utilizando el algoritmo de inversión modificado. El Qs (f) se obtuvo a varias frecuencias en el rango de 0,16 ~ 8,0 Hz. Se encontró que la estructura Qs estimada se correlaciona con los modelos geológicos y tectónicos de la región propuestos en estudios previos. Se obtuvo una relación regional dependiente de la frecuencia que utiliza todos los valores de 1944 del factor de calidad de la onda de corte a 18 frecuencias diferentes en todos los bloques y se puede aproximar mediante una función de la forma Qs (f) = 20 f 1.2. Se analizó un catálogo de sismos relocalizados en las regiones cercanas a los campos geotérmicos de Coso y Salton Sea, en el sur de California, USA, para investigar posibles cambios en la tasa de sismicidad durante y después de telesismos grandes (Mw>7.8). Se estudió la sismicidad de estas dos regiones usando ventanas de 30 días previos y posteriores a la ocurrencia de cinco grandes sismos: el de Denali, Alaska del 2002 (Mw7.9); el de Sumatra-Andaman del 2004 (Mw9.2); el de Chile del 2010 (Mw8.8); el de Tohoku-Oki, Japón del 2011 (Mw9.1); y el del norte de Sumatra del 2012 (Mw8.6). El sismo de Denali (Mw7.9) coincide con un incremento de la sismicidad en la región del Salton Sea cuando este evento remoto ocurrió, indicando que el disparo instantáneo de la sismicidad está posiblemente relacionado con el paso de las ondas superficiales en esta región. En la región del campo geotérmico Coso la tasa de sismicidad permaneció aproximadamente constante durante el periodo de 30 días de observación. La sismicidad después del sismo de Sumatra-Andaman del 2004 (Mw9.2) incrementó en las dos regiones 9 días después de este mega-evento. La sismicidad después del sismo de Chile del 2010 (Mw8.8) incrementó en ambas regiones aproximadamente 14 días después de la ocurrencia de este telesimo. La sismicidad en las regiones de Salton Sea y de Coso incrementaron 17 y 14 días, respectivamente, después del terremoto de Japón del 2011 (Mw9.1), lo que sugiere que el disparo retrasado de la sismicidad fue inducido después del paso de las ondas superficiales en ambas regiones. De manera similar el sismo del norte de Sumatra del 2012 (Mw8.6) disparó sismicidad 6 y 16 días después en las regiones de Salton Sea y Coso, respectivamente. Estas observaciones se pueden interpretar como evidencia de disparo dinámico retrasado inducido por sismos grandes y remotos. Estudiamos la respuesta sísmica de las estaciones de banda ancha localizadas en el Golfo de California, México, usando el método de cocientes espectrales entre las componentes horizontales y verticales (HVSR). Analizamos 92 sismos registrados por las redes NARS-Baja y RESBAN, operadas por el CICESE. La base de datos consiste de eventos registrados entre 2002 y 2006, con magnitudes que varían de 3.2 a 6.6. Los registros fueron rotados para encontrar las componentes radial y transversal del movimiento del terreno y calculamos los espectros de Fourier de las ventanas de la onda S para las tres componentes. Calculamos los cocientes espectrales HVSR para cada componente horizontal y el promedio de las dos componentes para cada evento. Analizamos los registros de 20 estaciones localizadas en sitios con diferentes características geológicas y encontramos que existe dependencia azimu-tal en seis de ellas, teniendo factores de amplificación que varían de 1.5 hasta 13 veces en los rangos estrechos de azimut. Se estudió sismicidad regional en la Provincia de Cuencas y Cordilleras de Sonora, México, cerca de la región epicentral del sismo del 3 de mayo de 1887 Mw 7.5. Se usaron tiempos de arribo de ondas de cuerpo registradas por la red local RESNES (Red Sísmica del Noreste de Sonora) y dos estaciones de banda ancha regional de la red RESBAN (Red Sismológica de Banda Ancha del Golfo de California) para localizar las fuentes sísmicas originadas entre 2008 y 2011. Primero, se determinaron coordenadas hipocentrales preliminares con el programa Hypoinverse (Klein, 2002) y entonces las coordenadas iniciales fueron determinadas con el método de corrección por estación de fuente específica (Lin and Shearer, 2005). Este procedimiento fue usado en un estudio previo (Castro et al., 2010) para localizar sismos originados en la misma región entre 2003 y 2011. La mayoría de los eventos relocalizados se agrupan cerca de las fallas que rompieron durante el sismo de 1887. Adicionalmente, se documenta la sismicidad a lo largo de las fallas normales de la Provincia de Cuencas y Cordilleras al sur de la ruptura de 1887, tales como las fallas Villa Hidalgo y Granados, y las fallas que confinan la cuenca de Bacadéhuachi. La región del centro poblacional más grande, Hermosillo, parece estar sísmicamente quieta. The catalog of the Red Sísmica del Noroeste de México (RESNOM) operated by CICESE is investigated. Probable artificial effects are detected. Current values for the minimum magnitude of completeness (Mc) and its spatial variations are outlined. Significant changes in reporting were found during early 1987, mid 1992, and early 1997. By inspecting the bulletins for 1987 to 1992 we found that the rate of located to recorded events was close to 50%. Comparing cumulative and non cumulative rates for 1987 - 1992.4 with 1992.4 – 1997.11 there is a difference of about 60% in the trends of located events. The difference is greater in the region of maximum resolution of the network. The change for the period 1992.4 to 1997.11 as compared to 1997.11 to 2001.5 does not warrant a correction; however, the number of events with duration magnitude Md ≤ 3.5 reported during the most recent interval is 38% larger than for the preceding period. Magnitudes calculated by RESNOM (Md) and PDE (mb) match if the magnitudes reported by RESNOM are increased by 0.1. The same correction should be applied when merging data from RESNOM with SSN. The minimum magnitude of completeness for current reporting is 2.4 Some areas with good coverage, in particular around 32°N and 116.5°W, can detect magnitudes as low as 1.6. The resolution of the network in some areas has improved considerably, with Mc decreasing as much as 1 magnitude unit.

Se efectuó un análisis del catálogo de la Red Sísmica del Noroeste de México (RESNOM) para proporcionar elementos que pueden ser claves para estudios actuales y futuros que hacen uso de esta importante base de datos. Las características espacio-temporales del catálogo de sismicidad se detallan para dar un panorama global de la historia de reporte. Al investigar las variaciones en los datos reportados se pretende encontrar bases para un mejor entendimiento de la historia sísmica de la región. Se han identificado variaciones con un probable origen artificial y se discuten sus implicaciones para estudios de sismicidad. Así mismo, se ha analizado la historia y los valores actuales de la magnitud mínima de reporte completo (Mc), así como su variación en el espacio para poder optimizar las estimaciones de riesgo en la región basadas en los datos de sismicidad. Se identificaron cambios significativos en el reporte que tuvieron lugar durante principios de 1987, mediados de 1992 y principios de 1997. Una inspección de los boletines, para el período de 1987 a 1992, arroja cifras para la tasa de eventos localizados contra eventos registrados de 50% en promedio. Haciendo una comparación entre las tendencias acumulada y no acumulada para los eventos localizados durante el período 1987 a 1992.4 contra las de 1992.4 a 1997.11 encontramos que si se restringe la zona de inspección a la región que concuerda con la máxima resolución de la red, la variación se reduce notablemente. Al efectuar una comparación entre la tendencia durante 1992.4 a 1997.11 contra la de 1997.11 a 2001.5 se demuestra que no es necesaria ninguna corrección, a pesar de que los datos indican que el número de eventos con magnitud de duración Md≤ 3.5 fue 38% menor durante el período antecedente comparado con los valores actuales. Una comparación entre la distribución obtenida con magnitudes determinadas por RESNOM (Md) contra la que resulta de utilizar magnitudes reportadas por PDE (mb), para eventos en la misma región, indica que se puede obtener una mejor correspondencia entre ambas estimaciones al aumentar las magnitudes de RESNOM por 0.1. Esta misma corrección podría ser aplicada si se desea añadir datos de RESNOM a datos provenientes del catálogo del SSN. La magnitud mínima de reporte completo para la época actual se determinó como 2.1 con una confianza de 90%. La resolución espacial de Mc indica que algunas áreas con buena cobertura instrumental, particularmente el área cercana a 32°N y 116.5°W alcanzan valores de Mc=1.6. Al hacer una comparación entre mapas de Mc para los períodos en los que se determinó que ocurrieron cambios, se demuestra que la resolución de la red en algunas áreas ha mejorado considerablemente, con diferencias en Mc hasta por 1.0 unidades. doi: https://doi.org/10.22201/igeof.00167169p.2005.44.2.249

Se propone un modelo empírico para estimar los espectros de aceleración horizontal con base en acelerogramas de estaciones localizadas en las regiones de Valle Imperial (California) y Valle de Mexicali (Baja California), empleando el fórmalo de Joyner y Boore ( 1981) para las relaciones de atenuación. El modelo adoptado escala los espectros de aceleración con la magnitud y con la distancia horizontal mas corta a la ruptura. Para tomar en cuenta el efecto de las condiciones locales de los sitios de registro se incorporó en el modelo una corrección dependiente de la frecuencia para cada estación. Los coeficientes del modelo se determinaron mediante una regresión en dos etapas. Se incluyeron datos de 44 sismos de magnitud entre 2.9 y 6.8 y distancias de 0.2 a 136 km. Se ensayaron dependencias lineares y cuadráticas en magnitud, encontrándose que la introducción de un termino cuadrático mejora el modelo. Las correcciones de sitio fluctúan considerablemente en frecuencia y de un sitio a otro, lo que demuestra la importancia de usar correcciones de sitio para predecir los espectros de aceleración para movimientos fuertes. doi: https://doi.org/10.22201/igeof.00167169p.1998.37.1.2156

Comparamos estimaciones de la respuesta sísmica de sitio en Oaxaca, México determinadas mediante el uso de métodos espectrales que no dependen de un sitio específico de referencia. En particular, usamos cocientes espectrales entre las componentes horizontal y vertical de las ondas S (e.g. Lermo y Chavez-Garcla, 1993) para estimar la respuesta sísmica de sitios localizados en suelo duro y sobre sedimentos. Comparamos los resultados obtenidos con las funciones de sitio determinadas por Castro y otros (1995) usando una inversión generalizada. Aunque ninguno de los dos métodos depende de un sitio de referencia común, ambos métodos generan funciones de sitio similares en forma. Para sitios localizados en roca dura, los factores de amplificación obtenidos son además consistentes. Estimaciones del factor de calidad Q. de las ondas S reportadas para las regiones de Oaxaca y Guerrero, México, muestran que la atenuación en Oaxaca es entre 3.7 y 5.0 veces mayor comparada con la de Guerrero en la banda de frecuencias de 1 a 30 Hz. Esta importante diferencia en la atenuación de estas regiones vecinas no puede ser completamente explicada por las características petrológicas de estas regiones. Cuando los valores de Q. observados en Oaxaca y Guerrero se comparan con otros parámetros, tales como la edad de las rocas y el flujo de calor, resulta que la atenuación en Oaxaca es mayor de lo esperado en relación con Guerrero. Esto sugiere que el mecanismo mas viable para explicar las diferencias de Q. observadas puede relacionarse con el estado de esfuerzos prevalentes cuando los valores de Qs fueron medidos. 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3HAA) is considered to be a fleeting metabolic intermediate along tryptophan catabolism through the kynurenine pathway. 3HAA and the rest of the kynurenine pathway have been linked to immune response in mammals yet whether it is detrimental or advantageous is a point of contention. Recently we have shown that accumulation of this metabolite, either through supplementation or prevention of its degradation, extends healthy lifespan in C. elegans and mice, while the mechanism remained unknown. Utilizing C. elegans as a model we investigate how 3HAA and haao-1 inhibition impact the host and the potential pathogens. What we find is that 3HAA improves host immune function with aging and serves as an antimicrobial against gram-negative bacteria. Regulation of 3HAA's antimicrobial activity is accomplished via tissue separation. 3HAA is synthesized in the C. elegans hypodermal tissue, localized to the site of pathogen interaction within the gut granules, and degraded in the neuronal cells. This tissue separation creates a new possible function for 3HAA that may give insight to a larger evolutionarily conserved function within the immune response.

Tryptophan metabolism through the kynurenine pathway influences molecular processes critical to healthy aging including immune signaling, redox homeostasis, and energy production. Aberrant kynurenine metabolism occurs during normal aging and is implicated in many age-associated pathologies including chronic inflammation, atherosclerosis, neurodegeneration, and cancer. We and others previously identified three kynurenine pathway genes-tdo-2, kynu-1, and acsd-1-for which decreasing expression extends lifespan in invertebrates. Here we report that knockdown of haao-1, a fourth gene encoding the enzyme 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3HAA) dioxygenase (HAAO), extends lifespan by ~30% and delays age-associated health decline in Caenorhabditis elegans. Lifespan extension is mediated by increased physiological levels of the HAAO substrate 3HAA. 3HAA increases oxidative stress resistance and activates the Nrf2/SKN-1 oxidative stress response. In pilot studies, female Haao knockout mice or aging wild type male mice fed 3HAA supplemented diet were also long-lived. The new genus Maxiclavella is proposed to accommodate Clavella simplex Castro Romero and Baeza Kuroki, 1985, which differs from Clavella species, including long and narrow cephalothorax, small bulla, and simple armature of the antenna and antennule. Praeclavella nasalis, new genus and species, was found parasitizing the olfactory sacs of Isacia conceptionis. Praeclavella nasalis could be differentiated from other Clavella species by a biramous antenna with an exopod shorter than the endopod, the base of the cephalothorax with a large lobular and suborbicular projection on each side, a suborbicular bulla, mandibles without secondary teeth, and a suboval male body type. Males of both genera fit well in the Clavella-clade male type, although they differ from each other in many aspects, mainly in the position of the buccal area, which is oriented ventrally in Maxiclavella and distally in Praeclavella nasalis, and in a genital process, which is present in the latter and absent in the former. Genetic distances of mtDNA COI and 28S rDNA supported the validity of the two new genera parasitizing the same host, I. conceptionis. Also Clavella-branch (Clavellinae Wilson), a key based genera on female specimens is presented.

The parasitic copepod genus Parabrachiella is composed of 70 species, 14 of which are found in South America. The finding of new specimens of Parabrachiella mugilis from Turkey allowed us to compare the nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene of this species with those of the South American Parabrachiella exilis and Parabrachiella platensis; all these species are parasites of mugilids. In addition, specimens of Parabrachiella fasciata, Parabrachiella oralis and Parabrachiella dispar from Chile, and Parabrachiella chevreuxi from Argentina were included in the comparison. Our results confirmed that the three Parabrachiella species parasitizing mugilids, which had been identified by morphology, are valid entities. However, P. exilis was recently synonymized with P. mugilis. The latter species showed a great genetic distance from P. exilis (16%) and was closer to Parabrachiella fasciata (13%) and to species with long posterior processes. Parabrachiella exilis and P. platensis (parasite on Mugil cephalus and Mugil liza, respectively) had a low genetic distance (9%) and Parabrachiella kabatai (parasite of Isacia conceptionis) had a low genetic distance (12-13%) from P. fasciata, P. platensis and P. exilis. In addition, the three parasitic copepods from South America have short and round posterior processes compared to other species, which have long posterior processes. Most species with long posterior processes are clustered together in a Pacific Ocean clade (P. hugu from the North Pacific Ocean), with the exception of P. chevreuxi, which has been found in the South Atlantic Ocean. Aging is characterized by a progressive decline in the normal physiological functions of an organism, ultimately leading to mortality. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD + ) is an essential cofactor that plays a critical role in mitochondrial energy production as well as many enzymatic redox reactions. Age-associated decline in NAD + is implicated as a driving factor in several categories of age-associated disease, including metabolic and neurodegenerative disease, as well as deficiency in the mechanisms of cellular defense against oxidative stress. The kynurenine metabolic pathway is the sole de novo NAD + biosynthetic pathway, generating NAD + from ingested tryptophan. Altered kynurenine pathway activity is associated with both aging and a variety of age-associated diseases. Kynurenine pathway interventions can extend lifespan in both fruit flies and nematodes, and altered NAD + metabolism represents one potential mediating mechanism. Recent studies demonstrate that supplementation with NAD + or NAD + -precursors increase longevity and promote healthy aging in fruit flies, nematodes, and mice. NAD + levels and the intrinsic relationship to mitochondrial function have been widely studied in the context of aging. Mitochondrial function and dynamics have both been implicated in longevity determination in a range of organisms from yeast to humans, at least in part due to their intimate link to regulating an organism's cellular energy economy and capacity to resist oxidative stress. Recent findings support the idea that complex communication between the mitochondria and the nucleus orchestrates a series of events and stress responses involving mitophagy, mitochondrial number, mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPR mt ), and mitochondria fission and fusion events. The transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) is a key regulator of the cellular antioxidant response, controlling the expression of genes that counteract oxidative and electrophilic stresses. Many pathological conditions are linked to imbalances in redox homeostasis, illustrating the important role of antioxidant defense systems in preventing the pathogenic effects associated with the accumulation of reactive species. In particular, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the accumulation of lipid peroxides has an important role in driving the pathogenesis of multiple disease states. A key example of this is the recent discovery of a novel form of cell death termed ferroptosis. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent, lipid peroxidation-driven cell death cascade that has become a key target in the development of anti-cancer therapies, as well as the prevention of neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. In this review, we will provide a brief overview of lipid peroxidation, as well as key components involved in the ferroptotic cascade. We will also highlight the role of the NRF2 signaling pathway in mediating lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis, focusing on established NRF2 target genes that mitigate these pathways, as well as the relevance of the NRF2-lipid peroxidation-ferroptosis axis in disease., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. Prolonged exposure to arsenic has been shown to increase the risk of developing a number of diseases, including cancer and type II diabetes. Arsenic is present throughout the environment in its inorganic forms, and the level of exposure varies greatly by geographical location. The current recommended maximum level of arsenic exposure by the EPA is 10μg/L, but levels>50-1000μg/L have been detected in some parts of Asia, the Middle East, and the Southwestern United States. One of the most important steps in developing treatment options for arsenic-linked pathologies is to understand the cellular pathways affected by low levels of arsenic. Here, we show that acute exposure to non-lethal, low-level arsenite, an environmentally relevant arsenical, inhibits the autophagy pathway. Furthermore, arsenite-induced autophagy inhibition initiates a transient, but moderate ER stress response. Significantly, low-level arsenite exposure does not exhibit an increase in oxidative stress. These findings indicate that compromised autophagy, and not enhanced oxidative stress occurs early during arsenite exposure, and that restoring the autophagy pathway and proper proteostasis could be a viable option for treating arsenic-linked diseases. Objectives: The overall aim of this article was to present a step-by-step guideline for determining the costs associated with dengue in dengue-endemic countries of the Latin American and the Caribbean region and to illustrate how each of these steps can be applied in dengue costing studies., Methods: An expert panel was convened to develop standards for costing dengue so that over the next decade, decision makers will have access to improved information on the true cost of dengue in endemic countries of the Latin American and the Caribbean region. We described the outcome of the expert panel meeting, which resulted in the provision of a step-by-step dengue costing guideline that aims to provide direction to planners and program managers on how to estimate dengue economic burden studies, and provide a discussion forum of the methods used to cost dengue fever cases and outbreaks in a manner that should be accessible to persons with some familiarity with a cost study., Results: The guideline includes nine sequential steps: 1) definition of the scope of the study; 2) identification of the target population; 3) description of the study perspective; 4) definition of the time horizon; 5) calculation of the sample size; 6) definition of the unit of analysis; 7) identification of the cost items; 8) measurement and valuation of the cost items; and 9) handling of uncertainty. Dengue fever (DF) is an important health issue in Colombia, but detailed information on economic costs to the healthcare system is lacking. Using information from official databases (2010-2012) and a face-to-face survey of 1,483 households with DF and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients, we estimated the average cost per case. In 2010, the mean direct medical costs to the healthcare system per case of ambulatory DF, hospitalized DF, and DHF (in Colombian pesos converted to US dollars using the average exchange rate for 2012) were $52.8, $235.8, and $1,512.2, respectively. The mean direct non-medical costs to patients were greater ($29.7, $46.7, and $62.6, respectively) than the mean household direct medical costs ($13.3, $34.8, and $57.3, respectively). The average direct medical cost to the healthcare system of a case of ambulatory DF in 2010 was 57% of that in 2011. However, we are not analyzing techniques or other surgical findings., Method: In this study, 160 women with previous abdominal pelvic surgeries underwent laparoscopic surgery, 145 patients underwent transvaginal Minilaparoscopy Assisted Natural Orifice Surgery (hybrid), and 3 patients underwent pure natural orifice transvaginal endoscopic surgery (pure). For those patients who had laparoscopy and hybrid procedures, the surveillance was from a laparoscope or gastroscope placed in a secondary port. Surveillance in pure cases was done using a gastroscopic retro view to see the pouch of Douglas., Results: The laparoscopic procedures were gynecological procedures. The hybrid procedures included gynecological procedures as well as appendectomies and cholecystectomies; the pure procedures were cholecystectomies. There were a few minor vascular and bowel injuries in the laparoscopy group. There were no injuries in the transvaginal hybrid or pure procedures groups., Conclusion: The surveillance of the first entrance port can be an effective precautionary step. The cumulative experience suggests that using such surveillance in cases involving patients with prior surgery may assist in recognizing complications that might otherwise be missed.

A survey was conducted in order to dispel misconceptions about natural orifice transvaginal cholecystectomy. Forty-two patients were surveyed after having undergone that procedure. Those patients were asked questions related to 1) patient satisfaction, 2) whether they would recommend the procedure to others, and 3) dyspaurenia. The survey was done after a sexual abstinence period that varied from 30 to 40 days. We encountered no complications, and all patients liked the procedure and would recommend it to family and friends. No patient developed dyspaurenia. The postoperative responses were unanimous and positive for all questions. The result of this postoperative transvaginal cholecystectomy survey will help patients and surgeons ease their fears and social taboos and better communicate, and this will help patients to become aware of the option of transvaginal peritoneoscopy.
