Search

Recent analyses show that $\Lambda$CDM-based models optimised to reproduce the clustering of massive galaxies overestimate their gravitational lensing by about 30\%, the so-called lensing is low problem. Using a state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulation, we show that this discrepancy reflects shortcomings in standard galaxy-halo connection models rather than tensions within the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm itself. Specifically, this problem results from ignoring a variety of galaxy formation effects, including assembly bias, segregation of satellite galaxies relative to dark matter, and baryonic effects on the matter distribution. All these effects contribute towards overestimating gravitational lensing and, when combined, explain the amplitude and scale dependence of the lensing is low problem. The spatial distribution of galaxies and their gravitational lensing signal offer complementary tests of galaxy formation physics and cosmology. However, their synergy can only be fully exploited if both probes are modelled accurately and consistently. In this paper, we demonstrate that this can be achieved using an extension of Subhalo Abundance Matching, dubbed SHAMe. Specifically, we use mock catalogues built from the TNG300 hydrodynamical simulation to show that SHAMe can simultaneously model the multipoles of the redshift-space galaxy correlation function and galaxy-galaxy lensing, without noticeable bias within the statistical sampling uncertainties of a SDSS volume and on scales r = [0.6-30] Mpc/h. Modelling the baryonic processes in galaxy-galaxy lensing with a baryonification scheme allows SHAMe's range of validity to be extended to r = [0.1-30] Mpc/h. Remarkably, our model achieves this level of precision with just five free parameters beyond those describing the baryonification model. At fixed cosmology, we find that galaxy-galaxy lensing provides a general consistency test but little additional information on galaxy modelling parameters beyond that encoded in the redshift-space multipoles. It does, however, improve constraints if only the projected correlation function is available, as in surveys with only photometric redshifts. We expect SHAMe to have a higher fidelity across a wider range of scales than more traditional methods such as Halo Occupation Distribution modelling. Globular clusters (GCs) are proxies of the formation assemblies of their host galaxies. However, few studies exist targeting GC systems of spiral galaxies up to several effective radii. Through 12-band Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) imaging, we study the point sources around the M81/M82/NGC3077 triplet in search of new GC candidates. We develop a tailored classification scheme to search for GC candidates based on their similarity to known GCs via a principal components analysis (PCA) projection. Our method accounts for missing data and photometric errors. We report 642 new GC candidates in a region of 3.5 deg$^2$ around the triplet, ranked according to their Gaia astrometric proper motions when available. We find tantalising evidence for an overdensity of GC candidate sources forming a bridge connecting M81 and M82. Finally, the spatial distribution of the GC candidates $(g-i)$ colours is consistent with halo/intra-cluster GCs, i.e. it gets bluer as they get further from the closest galaxy in the field. We further employ a regression-tree based model to estimate the metallicity distribution of the GC candidates based on their J-PLUS bands. The metallicity distribution of the sample candidates is broad and displays a bump towards the metal-rich end. Our list increases the population of GC candidates around the triplet by 3-fold, stresses the usefulness of multi-band surveys in finding these objects, and provides a testbed for further studies analysing their spatial distribution around nearby (spirals) galaxies., 20 pages, 18 figures, MNRAS accepted

We study the relations among the parameters of the hybrid Lagrangian bias expansion model, fitting biased auto and cross power spectra up to $k_{\rm max} = 0.7 \, h \, \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. We consider $\sim 8000$ halo and galaxy samples, with different halo masses, redshifts, galaxy number densities, and varying the parameters of the galaxy formation model. Galaxy samples are obtained through state-of-the-art extended subhalo abundance matching techniques and include both stellar-mass and star-formation-rate selected galaxies. All of these synthetic galaxies samples are publicly available at https://bacco.dipc.org/galpk.html. We find that the hybrid Lagrangian bias model provides accurate fits to all of our halo and galaxy samples. The coevolution relations between galaxy bias parameters, although roughly compatible with those obtained for haloes, show systematic shifts and larger scatter. We explore possible sources of this difference in terms of dependence on halo occupation and assembly bias of each sample. Prompt cusps are the densest quasi-equilibrium dark matter objects; one forms at the instant of collapse within every isolated peak of the initial cosmological density field. They have power-law density profiles, $\rho \propto r^{-1.5}$ with central phase-space density set by the primordial velocity dispersion of the dark matter. At late times they account for $\sim 1\%$ of the dark matter mass but for $>90\%$ of its annihilation luminosity in all but the densest regions, where they are tidally disrupted. Here we demonstrate that individual stellar encounters, rather than the mean galactic tide, are the dominant disruptors of prompt cusps within galaxies. Their cumulative effect is fully (though stochastically) characterised by an impulsive shock strength $B_* = 2\pi G\int\rho_*({\bf x}(t))\, \mathrm{d}t$ where $\rho_*$, the total mass density in stars, is integrated over a cusp's entire post-formation trajectory. Stellar encounters and mean tides have only a small effect on the halo annihilation luminosity seen by distant observers, but this is not true for the Galactic halo because of the Sun's position. For a 100 GeV WIMP, Earth-mass prompt cusps are predicted, and stellar encounters suppress their mean annihilation luminosity by a factor of two already at 20 kpc, so that their annihilation emission is predicted to appear almost uniform over the sky. The Galactic Center $\gamma$-ray Excess is thus unaffected by cusps. If it is indeed dark matter annihilation radiation, then prompt cusps in the outer Galactic halo and beyond must account for 20-80% of the observed isotropic $\gamma$-ray background in the 1 to 10 GeV range., Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures, for a video and code see https://github.com/jstuecker/cusp-encounters

The abundance of dark matter haloes is one of the key probes of the growth of structure and expansion history of the Universe. Theoretical predictions for this quantity usually assume that, when expressed in a certain form, it depends only on the mass variance of the linear density field. However, cosmological simulations have revealed that this assumption breaks, leading to 10–20 per cent systematic effects. In this paper, we employ a specially designed suite of simulations to further investigate this problem. Specifically, we carry out cosmological N-body simulations where we systematically vary growth history at a fixed linear density field, or vary the power spectrum shape at a fixed growth history. We show that the halo mass function generically depends on these quantities, thus showing a clear signal of non-universality. Most of this effect can be traced back to the way in which the same linear fluctuation grows differently into the non-linear regime depending on details of its assembly history. With these results, we propose a parameterization with explicit dependence on the linear growth rate and power spectrum shape. Using an independent suite of simulations, we show that this fitting function accurately captures the mass function of haloes over cosmologies spanning a vast parameter space, including massive neutrinos and dynamical dark energy. Finally, we employ this tool to improve the accuracy of so-called cosmology-rescaling methods and show they can deliver 2 per cent accurate predictions for the halo mass function over the whole range of currently viable cosmologies.

In this work, we carry out a suite of specially-designed numerical simulations to shed further light on dark matter (DM) subhalo survival at mass scales relevant for gamma-ray DM searches, a topic subject to intense debate nowadays. Specifically, we have developed and employed an improved version of DASH, a GPU $N$-body code, to study the evolution of low-mass subhaloes inside a Milky Way-like halo with unprecedented accuracy, reaching solar-mass and sub-parsec resolution in our simulations. We simulate subhaloes with varying mass, concentration, and orbital properties, and consider the effect of the gravitational potential of the Milky Way galaxy itself. More specifically, we analyze the evolution of both the bound mass fraction and annihilation luminosity of subhaloes, finding that most subhaloes survive until present time, even though in some cases they lose more than 99% of their mass at accretion. Baryons in the host induce a much more severe mass loss, especially when the subhalo orbit is more parallel to the galactic disk. Many of these subhaloes cross the solar galactocentric radius, thus making it easier to detect their annihilation fluxes from Earth. We find subhaloes orbiting a DM-only halo with a pericentre in the solar vicinity to lose 70-90% of their initial annihilation luminosity at redshift zero, which increases up to 99% when baryons are also included in the host. We find a strong relation between subhalo's mass loss and the effective tidal field at pericentre. Indeed, much of the dependence on concentration, orbital parameters, host potential and baryonic components can be explained through this single parameter. In addition to shedding light on the survival of low-mass galactic subhaloes, our results can provide detailed predictions that will aid current and future quests for the nature of DM., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures. One of the main predictions of excursion set theory is that the clustering of dark matter haloes only depends on halo mass. However, it has been long established that the clustering of haloes also depends on other properties, including formation time, concentration, and spin; this effect is commonly known as halo assembly bias. We use a suite of gravity-only simulations to study the dependence of halo assembly bias on cosmology; these simulations cover cosmological parameters spanning 10$\sigma$ around state-of-the-art best-fitting values, including standard extensions of the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm such as neutrino mass and dynamical dark energy. We find that the strength of halo assembly bias presents variations smaller than 0.05 dex across all cosmologies studied for concentration and spin selected haloes, letting us conclude that the dependence of halo assembly bias upon cosmology is negligible. We then study the dependence of galaxy assembly bias (i.e. the manifestation of halo assembly bias in galaxy clustering) on cosmology using subhalo abundance matching. We find that galaxy assembly bias also presents very small dependence upon cosmology ($\sim$ 2$\%$-4$\%$ of the total clustering); on the other hand, we find that the dependence of this signal on the galaxy formation parameters of our galaxy model is much stronger. Taken together, these results let us conclude that the dependence of halo and galaxy assembly bias on cosmology is practically negligible., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. We present a neural-network emulator for baryonic effects in the non-linear matter power spectrum. We calibrate this emulator using more than 50,000 measurements in a 15-dimensional parameters space, varying cosmology and baryonic physics. Baryonic physics is described through a baryonification algorithm, that has been shown to accurately capture the relevant effects on the power spectrum and bispectrum in state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations. Cosmological parameters are sampled using a cosmology-rescaling approach including massive neutrinos and dynamical dark energy. The specific quantity we emulate is the ratio between matter power spectrum with baryons and gravity-only, and we estimate the overall precision of the emulator to be 1-2%, at all scales 0.01 < k < 5 h/Mpc, and redshifts 0 < z < 1.5. We also obtain an accuracy of 1-2%, when testing the emulator against a collection of 74 different cosmological hydrodynamical simulations and their respective gravity-only counterparts. We show also that only one baryonic parameter, namely Mc, which set the gas fraction retained per halo mass, is enough to have accurate and realistic predictions of the baryonic feedback at a given epoch. We use the {\sc Illustris TNG300} magneto-hydrodynamic simulation, the {\sc SAGE} semi-analytical model, and the subhalo abundance matching technique (SHAM) to examine the diversity in predictions for galaxy assembly bias (i.e. the difference in the large scale clustering of galaxies at a fixed halo mass due to correlations with the assembly history and other properties of host haloes). We consider samples of galaxies selected according to their stellar mass or star formation rate at various redshifts. We find that all models predict an assembly bias signal of different magnitude, redshift evolution, and dependence with selection criteria and number density. To model these non-trivial dependences, we propose an extension to the standard SHAM technique so it can include arbitrary amounts of assembly bias. We do this by preferentially selecting subhaloes with the same internal property but different {\it individual} large-scale bias. We find that with this model, we can successfully reproduce the galaxy assembly bias signal in either {\sc SAGE} or the {\sc TNG}, for all redshifts and galaxy number densities. We anticipate that this model can be used to constrain the level of assembly bias in observations and aid in the creation of more realistic mock galaxy catalogues., Accepted by mnras

Predicting the spatial distribution of objects as a function of cosmology is an essential ingredient for the exploitation of future galaxy surveys. In this paper we show that a specially-designed suite of gravity-only simulations together with cosmology-rescaling algorithms can provide the clustering of dark matter, haloes, and subhaloes with high precision. Specifically, with only 3 $N$-body simulations we obtain the power spectrum of dark matter at $z=0$ and $z=1$ to better than 3\% precision for essentially all currently viable values of 8 cosmological parameters, including massive neutrinos and dynamical dark energy, and over the whole range of scales explored, 0.03 < $k/h^{-1}Mpc$ < 5. This precision holds at the same level for mass-selected haloes and for subhaloes selected according to their peak maximum circular velocity. As an initial application of these predictions, we successfully constrain $\Omega_{\rm m}$, $\sigma_8$, and the scatter in subhalo-abundance-matching employing the projected correlation function of mock SDSS galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. We compare predictions for galaxy-galaxy lensing profiles and clustering from the Henriques et al. (2015) public version of the Munich semi-analytical model of galaxy formation (SAM) and the IllustrisTNG suite, primarily TNG300, with observations from KiDS+GAMA and SDSS-DR7 using four different selection functions for the lenses (stellar mass, stellar mass and group membership, stellar mass and isolation criteria, stellar mass and colour). We find that this version of the SAM does not agree well with the current data for stellar mass-only lenses with $M_\ast > 10^{11}\,M_\odot$. By decreasing the merger time for satellite galaxies as well as reducing the radio-mode AGN accretion efficiency in the SAM, we obtain better agreement, both for the lensing and the clustering, at the high mass end. We show that the new model is consistent with the signals for central galaxies presented in Velliscig et al. (2017). Turning to the hydrodynamical simulation, TNG300 produces good lensing predictions, both for stellar mass-only ($��^2 = 1.81$ compared to $��^2 = 7.79$ for the SAM), and locally brightest galaxies samples ($��^2 = 3.80$ compared to $��^2 = 5.01$). With added dust corrections to the colours it matches the SDSS clustering signal well for red low mass galaxies. We find that both the SAMs and TNG300 predict $\sim 50\,\%$ excessive lensing signals for intermediate mass red galaxies with $10.2 < \log_{10} M_\ast [ M_\odot ] < 11.2$ at $r \approx 0.6\,h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$, which require further theoretical development., 30 pages, 20 figures, 10 tables, minor revisions, matches version accepted by MNRAS

We present and test a framework that models the 3D distribution of mass in the universe as a function of cosmological and astrophysical parameters. Our approach combines two different techniques: a rescaling algorithm that modifies the cosmology of gravity-only N-body simulations, and a ‘baryonification’ algorithm that mimics the effects of astrophysical processes induced by baryons, such as star formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback. We show how this approach can accurately reproduce the effects of baryons on the matter power spectrum of various state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations (EAGLE, Illustris, Illustris-TNG, Horizon-AGN, and OWLS, Cosmo-OWLS and BAHAMAS), to better than 1 per cent from very large down to small, highly non-linear, scales ($k\sim 5 \, h\, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$), and from z = 0 up to z ∼ 2. We highlight that, because of the heavy optimization of our algorithms, we can obtain these predictions for arbitrary baryonic models and cosmology (including massive neutrinos and dynamical dark energy models) with an almost negligible CPU cost. With these tools in hand, we explore the degeneracies between cosmological and astrophysical parameters in the non-linear mass power spectrum. Our findings suggest that after marginalizing over baryonic physics, cosmological constraints inferred from weak gravitational lensing should be moderately degraded.

Fluctuations in sky maps of the galaxy redshifts, dubbed as angular redshift fluctuations (ARF), contain precise information about the growth rate of structures and the nature of gravity in the Universe. Specifically, ARF constrain the combination of cosmological parameters $H/H_0\,f\sigma_8(z)$, while being an intrinsically tomographic probe and largely insensitive to many observational systematic errors, all this without requiring the assumption of any redshift-to-distance relation under a given fiducial cosmology. We present the first cosmological constraints derived from ARF by using BOSS LOWZ+CMASS DR12 galaxy samples, obtaining 7\%-accurate constraints on $H/H_0 f\sigma_8(z)$ at more than 20 redshifts over the range $z \in [0.26,0.72]$. Our best-fitting value is $10\%$ larger, but compatible at the $1.4\sigma$ level, than the $\Lambda$CDM expectation set by {\it Planck} observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. Our tomographic measurements, combined with these CMB data, provides one of the strongest constraints on the gravity index $\gamma$, $\gamma=0.44^{+0.09}_{-0.07}$, which lies within $2\sigma$ from the prediction of General Relativity ($\gamma_{\rm GR}\simeq 0.55$)., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, matches accepted version in MNRAS letters

Context. We explore the stellar content of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) Data Release 2 and show its potential for identifying low-metallicity stars using the Stellar Parameters Estimation based on Ensemble Methods (SPEEM) pipeline. Aims. SPEEM is a tool used to provide determinations of atmospheric parameters for stars and separate stellar sources from quasars based on the unique J-PLUS photometric system. The adoption of adequate selection criteria allows for the identification of metal-poor star candidates that are suitable for spectroscopic follow-up investigations. Methods. SPEEM consists of a series of machine-learning models that use a training sample observed by both J-PLUS and the SEGUE spectroscopic survey. The training sample has temperatures, Teff, between 4800 K and 9000 K, values of log g between 1.0 and 4.5, as well as -3.1 < [Fe/H] < +0.5. The performance of the pipeline was tested with a sample of stars observed by the LAMOST survey within the same parameter range. Results. The average differences between the parameters of a sample of stars observed with SEGUE and J-PLUS, obtained with the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline and SPEEM, respectively, are ΔTeff ∼ 41 K, Δlog g ∼ 0.11 dex, and Δ[Fe/H] ∼ 0.09 dex. We define a sample of 177 stars that have been identified as new candidates with [Fe/H] < -2.5, with 11 of them having been observed with the ISIS spectrograph at the William Herschel Telescope. The spectroscopic analysis confirms that 64% of stars have [Fe/H] < -2.5, including one new star with [Fe/H] < -3.0. Conclusions. Using SPEEM in combination with the J-PLUS filter system has demonstrated their potential in estimating the stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, and [Fe/H]). We present a model for the remnants of haloes that have gone through an adiabatic tidal stripping process. We show that this model exactly reproduces the remnant of an NFW halo that is exposed to a slowly increasing isotropic tidal field and approximately for an anisotropic tidal field. The model can be used to predict the asymptotic mass loss limit for orbiting subhaloes, solely as a function of the initial structure of the subhalo and the value of the tidal field at pericentre. Predictions can easily be made for differently concentrated host-haloes with and without baryonic components, which differ most notably in their relation between pericentre radius and tidal field. The model correctly predicts several empirically measured relations such as the `tidal track' and the `orbital frequency relation' that was reported by Errani & Navarro (2021) for the case of an isothermal sphere. Further, we propose applications of the `structure-tide' degeneracy which implies that increasing the concentration of a subhalo has exactly the same impact on tidal stripping as reducing the amplitude of the tidal field. Beyond this, we find that simple relations hold for the bound mass, truncation radius, WIMP annihilation luminosity and tidal ratio of tidally stripped NFW haloes in relation to quantities measured at the radius of maximum circular velocity. Finally, we note that NFW haloes cannot be completely disrupted when exposed adiabatically to tidal fields of arbitrary magnitudes. We present an emulator that accurately predicts the power spectrum of galaxies in redshift space as a function of cosmological parameters. Our emulator is based on a 2nd-order Lagrangian bias expansion that is displaced to Eulerian space using cosmological $N$-body simulations. Redshift space distortions are then imprinted using the non-linear velocity field of simulated particles and haloes. We build the emulator using a forward neural network trained with the simulations of the BACCO project, which covers an 8-dimensional parameter space including massive neutrinos and dynamical dark energy. We show that our emulator provides unbiased cosmological constraints from the monopole, quadrupole, and hexadecapole of a mock galaxy catalogue that mimics the BOSS-CMASS sample down to nonlinear scales ($k\sim0.6$[$h/$Mpc]$^{3}$). Extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) are key objects in studies of galactic histories. The advent of wide-field surveys, such as the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS), offers new possibilities for the study of these systems. Aims. We performed the first study of GCs in J-PLUS to recover information on the history of NGC 1023, taking advantage of wide-field images and 12 filters. Methods. We developed the semiautomatic pipeline GCFinder for detecting GC candidates in J-PLUS images, which can also be adapted to similar surveys. We studied the stellar population properties of a sub-sample of GC candidates using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. Results. We found 523 GC candidates in NGC 1023, about 300 of which are new. We identified subpopulations of GC candidates, where age and metallicity distributions have multiple peaks. By comparing our results with the simulations, we report a possible broad age-metallicity relation, supporting the notion that NGC 1023 has experienced accretion events in the past. With a dominating age peak at 1010 yr, we report a correlation between masses and ages that suggests that massive GC candidates are more likely to survive the turbulent history of the host galaxy. Modeling the light of NGC 1023, we find two spiral-like arms and detect a displacement of the galaxy’s photometric center with respect to the outer isophotes and center of GC distribution (~700pc and ~1600pc, respectively), which could be the result of ongoing interactions between NGC 1023 and NGC 1023A. Conclusions. Current best limits on the 21-cm signal during reionization are provided at large scales ($\gtrsim$100 Mpc). To model these scales, enormous simulation volumes are required which are computationally expensive. We find that the primary source of uncertainty at these large scales is sample variance, which decides the minimum size of simulations required to analyse current and upcoming observations. In large-scale structure simulations, the method of `fixing' the initial conditions (ICs) to exactly follow the initial power spectrum and `pairing' two simulations with exactly out-of-phase ICs has been shown to significantly reduce sample variance. Here we apply this `fixing and pairing' (F\&P) approach to reionization simulations whose clustering signal originates from both density fluctuations and reionization bubbles. Using a semi-numerical code, we show that with the traditional method, simulation boxes of $L\simeq 500$ (300) Mpc are required to model the large-scale clustering signal at $k$=0.1 Mpc$^{-1}$ with a precision of 5 (10) per cent. Using F\&P, the simulation boxes can be reduced by a factor of 2 to obtain the same precision level. The global gravitational potential, $\phi$, is not commonly employed in the analysis of cosmological simulations, since its level sets do not show any clear correspondence to the underlying density field and its persistent structures. Here, we show that the potential becomes a locally meaningful quantity when considered from a boosted frame of reference, defined by subtracting a uniform gradient term $\phi_{\rm{boost}}(\boldsymbol{x}) = \phi(\boldsymbol{x}) + \boldsymbol{x} \cdot \boldsymbol{a}_0$ with acceleration $\boldsymbol{a}_0$. We study this "boosted potential" in a variety of scenarios and propose several applications: (1) The boosted potential can be used to define a binding criterion that naturally incorporates the effect of tidal fields. This solves several problems of commonly-used self-potential binding checks: i) it defines a tidal boundary for each halo, ii) it is much less likely to misidentify caustics as haloes (specially in the context of warm dark matter cosmologies), and iii) performs better at identifying virialized regions of haloes -- yielding to the expected value of 2 for the virial ratio. (2) This binding check can be generalized to filaments and other cosmic structures. (3) The boosted potential facilitates the understanding of the disruption of satellite subhaloes. We propose a picture where most mass loss is explained through a lowering of the escape energy through the tidal field. (4) We discuss the possibility of understanding the topology of the potential field in a way that is independent of constant offsets in the first derivative $\boldsymbol{a}_0$. Providing accurate predictions for the spatial distribution of matter and luminous tracers in the presence of massive neutrinos is an important task, given the imminent arrival of highly accurate large-scale structure observations. In this work, we address this challenge by extending cosmology-rescaling algorithms to massive neutrino cosmologies. In this way, a $\Lambda$CDM simulation can be modified to provide nonlinear structure formation predictions in the presence a hot component of arbitrary mass, and, if desired, to include non-gravitational modifications to the clustering of matter on large scales. We test the accuracy of the method by comparing its predictions to a suite of simulations carried out explicitly including a neutrino component in its evolution equations. We find that, for neutrino masses in the range $M_\nu \in [0.06, 0.3] ~ \mathrm{eV}$ the matter power spectrum is recovered to better than $1\%$ on all scales $k, Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

Aims. Our goal is to estimate the star formation main sequence (SFMS) and the star formation rate density (SFRD) at z = 0.017 (d . 75 Mpc) using the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) first data release, that probes 897.4 deg2 with twelve optical bands. Methods. We extract the Ha emission flux of 805 local galaxies from the J-PLUS filter J0660, being the continuum level estimated with the other eleven J-PLUS bands, and the dust attenuation and nitrogen contamination corrected with empirical relations. Stellar masses (M), Ha luminosities (LHa), and star formation rates (SFRs) were estimated by accounting for parameters covariances. Our sample comprises 689 blue galaxies and 67 red galaxies, classified in the (u - g) vs. (g - z) color–color diagram, plus 49 AGN. Results. The SFMS is explored at log M 8 and it is clearly defined by the blue galaxies, with the red galaxies located below them. The SFMS is described as log SFR = 0.83 log M -8.44. We find a good agreement with previous estimations of the SFMS, especially those based on integral field spectroscopy. The Ha luminosity function of the AGN-free sample is well described by a Schechter function with log L * Ha = 41.34, log f * = -2.43, and a = -1.25. Our measurements provide a lower characteristic luminosity than several previous studies in the literature. Conclusions. The derived star formation rate density at d . 75 Mpc is log SFR = -2.10 ± 0.11, with red galaxies accounting for 15% of the SFRD. Aims. We present the photometric calibration of the twelve optical passbands for the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) second data release (DR2), comprising 1088 pointings of two square degrees, and study the systematic impact of metallicity on the stellar locus technique. Methods. The [Fe/H] metallicity from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) for 146â 184 high-quality calibration stars, defined with signal-To-noise ratio larger than ten in J-PLUS passbands and larger than three in Gaia parallax, was used to compute the metallicity-dependent stellar locus (ZSL). The initial homogenization of J-PLUS photometry, performed with a unique stellar locus, was refined by including the metallicity effect in colors via the ZSL. Results. The variation of the average metallicity along the Milky Way produces a systematic offset in J-PLUS calibration. This effect is well above 1% for the bluer passbands and amounts 0.07, 0.07, 0.05, 0.03, and 0.02 mag in u, J0378, J0395, J0410, and J0430, respectively. We modeled this effect with the Milky Way location of the J-PLUS pointing, also providing an updated calibration for those observations without LAMOST information. The estimated accuracy in the calibration after including the metallicity effect is at 1% for the bluer J-PLUS passbands and below for the rest. Conclusions. Photometric calibration with the stellar locus technique is prone to significant systematic bias in the Milky Way for passbands bluer than λâ =â 4500 Å. In this work, we combine size and stellar mass measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Server (SDSS) with the group finder algorithm of Rodriguez \& Merch��n in order to determine the stellar and halo mass -- size relations of central and satellite galaxies separately. We show that, while central and satellite galaxies display similar stellar mass -- size relations, their halo mass -- size relations differ significantly. As expected, more massive haloes tend to host larger central galaxies. However, the size of satellite galaxies depends only slightly on halo virial mass. We show that these results are compatible with a remarkably simple model in which the size of central and satellite galaxies scales as the cubic root of their host halo mass, with the normalization for satellites being $\sim$ 30 \% smaller than that for central galaxies, which can be attributed to tidal stripping. We further check that our measurements are in excellent agreement with predictions from the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulation. In the second part of this paper, we analyse how the clustering properties of central and satellite galaxies depend on their size. We demonstrate that, independently of the stellar mass threshold adopted, smaller galaxies are more tightly clustered than larger galaxies when either the entire sample or only satellites are considered. The opposite trend is observed on large scales when the size split is performed for the central galaxies alone. Our results place significant constraints for halo-galaxy connection models that link galaxy size with the properties of their hosting haloes., 15 pages, 12 figures. Context. The Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) is an observational campaign that aims to obtain photometry in 12 ultraviolet-visible filters (0.3-1 μm) over ∼8500 deg2 of the sky observable from Javalambre (Teruel, Spain). Due to its characteristics and observation strategy, this survey will allow a great number of Solar System small bodies to be analyzed, and with improved spectrophotometric resolution with respect to previous large-area photometric surveys in optical wavelengths. Aims. The main goal of the present work is to present the first catalog of magnitudes and colors of minor bodies of the Solar System compiled using the first data release (DR1) of the J-PLUS observational campaign: the Moving Objects Observed from Javalambre (MOOJa) catalog. Methods. Using the compiled photometric data we obtained very-low-resolution reflectance (photo)spectra of the asteroids. We first used a σ-clipping algorithm in order to remove outliers and clean the data. We then devised a method to select the optimal solar colors in the J-PLUS photometric system. These solar colors were computed using two different approaches: on one hand, we used different spectra of the Sun convolved with the filter transmissions of the J-PLUS system, and on the other, we selected a group of solar-type stars in the J-PLUS DR1 according to their computed stellar parameters. Finally, we used the solar colors to obtain the reflectance spectra of the asteroids. Results. Improving the theoretical description of galaxy clustering on small scales is an important challenge in cosmology, as it can considerably increase the scientific return of forthcoming galaxy surveys -- e.g. tightening the bounds on neutrino masses and deviations from general relativity. In this paper, we propose and test a new model for the clustering of galaxies that is able to accurately describe redshift-space distortions even down to small scales. This model corresponds to a second-order perturbative Lagrangian bias expansion which is advected to Eulerian space employing a displacement field extracted from $N$-body simulations. Eulerian coordinates are then transformed into redshift space by directly employing simulated velocity fields augmented with nuisance parameters capturing various possible satellite fractions and intra-halo small-scale velocities. We quantify the accuracy of our approach against samples of physically-motivated mock galaxies selected according to either Stellar Mass (SM) or Star Formation Rate (SFR) at multiple abundances and at $z=0$ and $1$. We find our model describes the monopole, quadrupole, and hexadecapole of the galaxy-power spectra down to scales of $k\approx 0.6 [h/$Mpc] within the accuracy of our simulations. Baryons and cold dark matter (CDM) did not comove prior to recombination. This leads to differences in the local baryon and CDM densities, the so-called baryon-CDM isocurvature perturbations $\delta_{bc}$. These perturbations are usually neglected in the analysis of Large-Scale Structure data but taking them into account might become important in the era of high precision cosmology. Using gravity-only 2-fluid simulations we assess the impact of such perturbations on the dark matter halos distribution. In particular, we focus on the baryon fraction in halos as a function of mass and large-scale $\delta_{bc}$, which also allows us to study details of the nontrivial numerical setup required for such simulations. We further measure the cross-power spectrum between the halo field and $\delta_{bc}$ over a wide range of mass. This cross-correlation is nonzero and negative which shows that halo formation is impacted by $\delta_{bc}$. We measure the associated bias parameter $b_{\delta_{bc}}$ and compare it to recent results, finding good agreement. Finally we quantify the impact of such perturbations on the halo-halo power spectrum and show that this effect can be degenerate with the one of massive neutrinos for surveys like DESI., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, Version published in JCAP

This is the second part of a thorough investigation of the redshift-space effects that affect void properties and the impact they have on cosmological tests. Here, we focus on the void-galaxy cross-correlation function, specifically, on the projected versions that we developed in a previous work. The pillar of the analysis is the one-to-one relationship between real and redshift-space voids above the shot-noise level identified with a spherical void finder. Under this mapping, void properties are affected by three effects: (i) a systematic expansion as a consequence of the distortions induced by galaxy dynamics, (ii) the Alcock-Paczynski volume effect, which manifests as an overall expansion or contraction depending on the fiducial cosmology, and (iii) a systematic off-centring along the line of sight as a consequence of the distortions induced by void dynamics. We found that correlations are also affected by an additional source of distortions: the ellipticity of voids. This is the first time that distortions due to the off-centring and ellipticity effects are detected and quantified. With a simplified test, we verified that the Gaussian streaming model is still robust provided all these effects are taken into account, laying the foundations for improvements in current models in order to obtain unbiased cosmological constraints from spectroscopic surveys. Besides this practical importance, this analysis also encodes key information about the structure and dynamics of the Universe at the largest scales. We demonstrate that baryonification algorithms, which displace particles in gravity-only simulations according to physically-motivated prescriptions, can simultaneously capture the impact of baryonic physics on the 2 and 3-point statistics of matter. Specifically, we show that our implementation of a baryonification algorithm jointly fits the changes induced by baryons on the power spectrum and equilateral bispectrum on scales up to k < 5 h/Mpc and redshifts z, 14 pages, 15 figures. In the context of next-generation spectroscopic galaxy surveys, new statistics of the distribution of matter are currently being developed. Among these, we investigated the angular redshift fluctuations (ARF), which probe the information contained in the projected redshift distribution of galaxies. Relying on the Fisher formalism, we show how ARF will provide complementary cosmological information compared to traditional angular galaxy clustering. We tested both the standard $\mathrm{\Lambda CDM}$ model and the $\mathrm{wCDM}$ extension. We find that the cosmological and galaxy bias parameters express different degeneracies when inferred from ARF or from angular galaxy clustering. As such, combining both observables breaks these degeneracies and greatly decreases the marginalised uncertainties by a factor of at least two on most parameters for the $\mathrm{\Lambda CDM}$ and $\mathrm{wCDM}$ models. We find that the ARF combined with angular galaxy clustering provide a great way to probe dark energy by increasing the figure of merit of the $w_0$-$w_{\rm a}$ parameter set by a factor of more than ten compared to angular galaxy clustering alone. Finally, we compared ARF to the CMB lensing constraints on the galaxy bias parameters. We show that a joint analysis of ARF and angular galaxy clustering improves constraints by $\sim 40\%$ on galaxy bias compared to a joint analysis of angular galaxy clustering and CMB lensing., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures, published in A&A

M.; Santos da Costa, S.; Telles, E., The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will scan thousands of square degrees of the northern sky with a unique set of 56 filters using the dedicated 2:55m Javalambre Survey Telescope (JST) at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory. Prior to the installation of the main camera (4:2 deg2 field-of-view with 1.2 Gpixels), the JST was equipped with the JPAS-Pathfinder, a one CCD camera with a 0:3 deg2 field-of-view and plate scale of 0.23 arcsec pixel?1. To demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PAS, the JPAS-Pathfinder camera was used to perform miniJPAS, a _1 deg2 survey of the AEGIS field (along the Extended Groth Strip). The field was observed with the 56 J-PAS filters, which include 54 narrow band (FWHM _ 145 ) and two broader filters extending to the UV and the near-infrared, complemented by the u; g; r; i SDSS broad band filters. In this miniJPAS survey overview paper, we present the miniJPAS data set (images and catalogs), as we highlight key aspects and applications of these unique spectro-photometric data and describe how to access the public data products. The data parameters reach depths of magAB ' 22?23:5 in the 54 narrow band filters and up to 24 in the broader filters (5_ in a 300 aperture). The miniJPAS primary catalog contains more than 64 000 sources detected in the r band and with matched photometry in all other bands. This catalog is 99% complete at r = 23:6 (r = 22:7) mag for point-like (extended) sources. We show that our photometric redshifts have an accuracy better than 1% for all sources up to r = 22:5, and a precision of _0:3% for a subset consisting of about half of the sample. On this basis, we outline several scientific applications of our data, including the study of spatially-resolved stellar populations of nearby galaxies, the analysis of the large scale structure up to z _ 0:9, and the detection of large numbers of clusters and groups. Sub-percent redshift precision can also be reached for quasars, allowing for the study of the large-scale structure to be pushed to z 2. The miniJPAS survey demonstrates the capability of the J-PAS filter system to accurately characterize a broad variety of sources and paves the way for the upcoming arrival of J-PAS, which will multiply this data by three orders of magnitude. © 2021 EDP Sciences. We present the BACCO project, a simulation framework specially designed to provide highly-accurate predictions for the distribution of mass, galaxies, and gas as a function of cosmological parameters. In this paper, we describe our main suite of simulations (L $\sim2$ Gpc and $4320^3$ particles) and present various validation tests. Using a cosmology-rescaling technique, we predict the nonlinear mass power spectrum over the redshift range $0, Comment: 12 pages; 11 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use the improved IllustrisTNG300 magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological simulation to revisit the effect that secondary halo bias has on the clustering of the central galaxy population. With a side length of 205 $h^{-1}$Mpc and significant improvements on the sub-grid model with respect to the previous Illustris boxes, IllustrisTNG300 allows us to explore the dependencies of galaxy clustering over a large cosmological volume and wide halo-mass range. We show, at high statistical significance, that the halo assembly bias signal (i.e., the secondary dependence of halo bias on halo formation redshift) manifests itself on the clustering of the central galaxy population when this is split by stellar mass, colour, specific star formation rate, and surface density. A significant detection is also obtained for galaxy size: at fixed halo mass, larger central galaxies are more tightly clustered than smaller central galaxies in haloes of mass M$_{\rm vir} \lesssim 10^{12.5}$ $h^{-1}$M$_{\odot}$. This effect, however, seems to be uncorrelated with halo formation time, unlike the rest of the secondary dependencies analysed. We also explore the transmission of the halo spin bias signal, i.e., the secondary dependence of halo bias on halo spin. Although galaxy spin retains little information about the total spin of the halo, the correlation is enough to produce a significant galaxy spin bias signal. At early times dark matter has a thermal velocity dispersion of unknown amplitude which, for warm dark matter models, can influence the formation of nonlinear structure on observable scales. We propose a new scheme to simulate cosmologies with a small-scale suppression of perturbations that combines two previous methods in a way that avoids the numerical artefacts which have so far prevented either from producing fully reliable results. At low densities and throughout most of the cosmological volume, we represent the dark matter phase-sheet directly using high-accuracy interpolation, thereby avoiding the artificial fragmentation which afflicts particle-based methods in this regime. Such phase-sheet methods are, however, unable to follow the rapidly increasing complexity of the denser regions of dark matter haloes, so for these we switch to an N-body scheme which uses the geodesic deviation equation to track phase-sheet properties local to each particle. In addition, we present a novel high-resolution force calculation scheme based on an oct-tree of cubic force resolution elements which is well suited to approximate the force-field of our combined sheet+particle distribution. Our hybrid simulation scheme enables the first reliable simulations of the internal structure of low-mass haloes in a warm dark matter cosmology., 23 pages, 28 figures

The interpretation of cosmological observables requires the use of increasingly sophisticated theoretical models. Since these models are becoming computationally very expensive and display non-trivial uncertainties, the use of standard Bayesian algorithms for cosmological inferences, such as MCMC, might become inadequate. Here, we propose a new approach to parameter estimation based on an iterative Gaussian emulation of the target likelihood function. This requires a minimal number of likelihood evaluations and naturally accommodates for stochasticity in theoretical models. We apply the algorithm to estimate 9 parameters from the monopole and quadrupole of a mock power spectrum in redshift space. We obtain accurate posterior distribution functions with approximately 100 times fewer likelihood evaluations than an affine invariant MCMC, roughly independently from the dimensionality of the problem. We anticipate that our parameter estimation algorithm will accelerate the adoption of more accurate theoretical models in data analysis, enabling more comprehensive exploitation of cosmological observables., 12 pages, 5 figures

We develop an extension of subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) capable of accurately reproducing the real and redshift-space clustering of galaxies in a state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulation. Our method uses a low-resolution gravity-only simulation and it includes orphan and tidal disruption prescriptions for satellite galaxies, and a flexible amount of galaxy assembly bias. Furthermore, it includes recipes for star formation rate (SFR) based on the dark matter accretion rate. We test the accuracy of our model against catalogues of stellar-mass- and SFR-selected galaxies in the TNG300 hydrodynamic simulation. By fitting a small number of free parameters, our extended SHAM reproduces the projected correlation function and redshift-space multipoles for number densities $10^{-3} - 10^{-2}\, h^{3}{\rm Mpc}^{-3}$, at $z=1$ and $z=0$, and for scales $r \in [0.3 - 20] h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. Simultaneously, the SHAM results also retrieve the correct halo occupation distribution, the level of galaxy assembly bias, and higher-order statistics present in the TNG300 galaxy catalogues. As an application, we show that our model simultaneously fits the projected correlation function of the SDSS in 3 disjoint stellar mass bins, with an accuracy similar to that of TNG300 galaxies. Inaccuracies in the initial conditions for cosmological N-body simulations could easily be the largest source of systematic error in predicting the non-linear large-scale structure. From the theory side, initial conditions are usually provided by using low-order truncations of the displacement field from Lagrangian perturbation theory, with the first and second-order approximations being the most common ones. Here we investigate the improvement brought by using initial conditions based on third-order Lagrangian perturbation theory (3LPT). We show that with 3LPT, truncation errors are vastly suppressed, thereby opening the portal to initializing simulations accurately as late as z=12 (for the resolution we consider). We analyse the competing effects of perturbative truncation and particle discreteness on various summary statistics. Discreteness errors are essentially decaying modes and thus get strongly amplified for earlier initialization times. We show that late starting times with 3LPT provide the most accurate configuration, which we find to coincide with the continuum fluid limit within 1 per cent for the power- and bispectrum at z=0 up to the particle Nyquist wave number of our simulations (k ~ 3h/Mpc). In conclusion, to suppress non-fluid artefacts, we recommend initializing simulations as late as possible with 3LPT. Context. The Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) has obtained precise photometry in twelve specially designed filters for large numbers of Galactic stars. Deriving their precise stellar atmospheric parameters and individual elemental abundances is crucial for studies of Galactic structure, and the assembly history and chemical evolution of our Galaxy. Aims. Our goal is to estimate not only stellar parameters (effective temperature, Teff, surface gravity, log g, and metallicity, [Fe/H]), but also [{\alpha}/Fe] and four elemental abundances ([C/Fe], [N/Fe], [Mg/Fe], and [Ca/Fe]) using data from J-PLUS DR1. Methods. By combining recalibrated photometric data from J-PLUS DR1, Gaia DR2, and spectroscopic labels from LAMOST, we design and train a set of cost-sensitive neural networks, the CSNet, to learn the non-linear mapping from stellar colors to their labels. Results. We have achieved precisions of {\delta}Teff {\sim}55K, {\delta}logg{\sim}0.15dex, and {\delta}[Fe/H]{\sim}0.07dex, respectively, over a wide range of temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity. The uncertainties of the abundance estimates for [{\alpha}/Fe] and the four individual elements are in the range 0.04-0.08 dex. We compare our parameter and abundance estimates with those from other spectroscopic catalogs such as APOGEE and GALAH, and find an overall good agreement. Conclusions. Our results demonstrate the potential of well-designed, high-quality photometric data for determinations of stellar parameters as well as individual elemental abundances. Applying the method to J-PLUS DR1, we have obtained the aforementioned parameters for about two million stars, providing an outstanding data set for chemo-dynamic analyses of the Milky Way. In the upcoming era of high-precision galaxy surveys, it becomes necessary to understand the impact of redshift uncertainties on cosmological observables. In this paper we explore the effect of sub-percent photometric redshift errors (photo-$z$ errors) on galaxy clustering and baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO). Using analytic expressions and results from $1\,000$ $N$-body simulations, we show how photo-$z$ errors modify the amplitude of moments of the 2D power spectrum, their variances, the amplitude of BAO, and the cosmological information in them. We find that: a) photo-$z$ errors suppress the clustering on small scales, increasing the relative importance of shot noise, and thus reducing the interval of scales available for BAO analyses; b) photo-$z$ errors decrease the smearing of BAO due to non-linear redshift-space distortions (RSD) by giving less weight to line-of-sight modes; and c) photo-$z$ errors (and small-scale RSD) induce a scale dependence on the information encoded in the BAO scale, and that reduces the constraining power on the Hubble parameter. Using these findings, we propose a template that extracts unbiased cosmological information from samples with photo-$z$ errors with respect to cases without them. Finally, we provide analytic expressions to forecast the precision in measuring the BAO scale, showing that spectro-photometric surveys will measure the expansion history of the Universe with a precision competitive to that of spectroscopic surveys., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, resubmission. Galaxy surveys aim to map the large-scale structure of the Universe and use redshift space distortions to constrain deviations from general relativity and probe the existence of massive neutrinos. However, the amount of information that can be extracted is limited by the accuracy of theoretical models used to analyze the data. Here, by using the L-Galaxies semi-analytical model run over the MXXL N-body simulation, we assess the impact of galaxy formation on satellite kinematics and the theoretical modelling of redshift-space distortions. We show that different galaxy selection criteria lead to noticeable differences in the radial distributions and velocity structure of satellite galaxies. Specifically, whereas samples of stellar mass selected galaxies feature satellites that roughly follow the dark matter, emission line satellite galaxies are located preferentially in the outskirts of halos and display net infall velocities. We demonstrate that capturing these differences is crucial for modelling the multipoles of the correlation function in redshift space, even on large scales. In particular, we show how modelling small scale velocities with a single Gaussian distribution leads to a poor description of the measure clustering. In contrast, we propose a parametrization that is flexible enough to model the satellite kinematics, and that leads to and accurate description of the correlation function down to sub-Mpc scales. Future galaxy surveys require realistic mock catalogues to understand and quantify systematics in order to make precise cosmological measurements. We present a halo lightcone catalogue and halo occupation distribution (HOD) galaxy catalogue built using the Millennium-XXL (MXXL) simulation. The halo catalogue covers the full sky, extending to z = 2 with a mass resolution of ~1e11 Msun/h . We use this to build a galaxy catalogue, which has an r-band magnitude limit of r < 20.0, with a median redshift of z~0.2. A Monte Carlo HOD method is used to assign galaxies to the halo lightcone catalogue, and we evolve the HODs to reproduce a target luminosity function; by construction, the luminosity function of galaxies in the mock is in agreement with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) at low redshifts and the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey at high redshifts. A Monte Carlo method is used to assign a 0.1(g-r) colour to each galaxy, and the colour distribution of galaxies at different redshifts agrees with measurements from GAMA. The clustering of galaxies in the mock for galaxies in different magnitude and redshift bins is in good agreement with measurements from SDSS and GAMA, and the colour-dependent clustering is in reasonable agreement. We show that the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) can be measured in the mock catalogue, and the redshift space distortions (RSDs) are in agreement with measurements from SDSS, illustrating that this catalogue will be useful for upcoming surveys., 18 pages, 18 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We study the quenching of star formation as a function of redshift, environment and stellar mass in the galaxy formation simulations of Henriques et al. (2015), which implement an updated version of the Munich semi-analytic model (L-GALAXIES) on the two Millennium Simulations after scaling to a Planck cosmology. In this model, massive galaxies are quenched by active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback depending on both black hole and hot gas mass, and hence indirectly on stellar mass. In addition, satellite galaxies of any mass can be quenched by ram-pressure or tidal stripping of gas and through the suppression of gaseous infall. This combination of processes produces quenching efficiencies which depend on stellar mass, host halo mass, environment density, distance to group centre and group central galaxy properties in ways which agree qualitatively with observation. Some discrepancies remain in dense regions and close to group centres, where quenching still seems too efficient. In addition, although the mean stellar age of massive galaxies agrees with observation, the assumed AGN feedback model allows too much ongoing star formation at late times. We propose the use of angular fluctuations in the galaxy redshift field as a new way to extract cosmological information in the Universe. This new probe $\delta z (\hat{n})$ consists on the statistics of sky maps built by projecting redshifts under a Gaussian window of width $\sigma_z$ centred upon a redshift $z_{\rm obs}$, and weighted by the galaxy density field. We compute the angular power spectrum of the $\delta z (\hat{n})$ field in both numerical simulations and in linear perturbation theory. From these we find that the $\delta z (\hat{n})$ field: {\it (i)} is sensitive to the underlying density and peculiar velocity fields; {\it (ii)} is highly correlated, at the $\gtrsim 60\,\%$ level, to the line-of-sight projected peculiar velocity field; {\it (iii)} for narrow windows $(\sigma_z < 0.03$), it is almost completely uncorrelated to the projected galaxy angular density field under the same redshift window; and {\it (iv)} it is largely unaffected by multiplicative and additive systematic errors on the observed number of galaxies that are redshift-independent over $\sim\sigma_z$. We present a synthetic galaxy lightcone specially designed for narrow-band optical photometric surveys. To reduce time-discreteness effects, unlike previous works, we directly include the lightcone construction in the \texttt{L-Galaxies} semi-analytic model applied to the subhalo merger trees of the {\tt Millennium} simulation. Additionally, we add a model for the nebular emission in star-forming regions, which is crucial for correctly predicting the narrow/medium-band photometry of galaxies. Explicitly, we consider, individually for each galaxy, the contribution of 9 different lines: $\rm Ly{\alpha}$ (1216\AA), \Hb (4861\AA), \Ha (6563\AA), {\oii} (3727\AA, 3729\AA), {\oiii} (4959\AA, 5007\AA), $\rm [\ion{Ne}{III}]$ (3870\AA), {\oi} (6300\AA), $\rm [\ion{N}{II}]$ (6548\AA, 6583\AA), and $\rm [\ion{S}{II}]$ (6717\AA, 6731\AA). We validate our lightcone by comparing galaxy number counts, angular clustering, and \Ha, \Hb, {\oii} and {\oiiiFd} luminosity functions to a compilation of observations. As an application of our mock lightcones, we generate catalogues tailored for J-PLUS, a large optical galaxy survey featuring 5 broad and 7 medium band filters. We study the ability of the survey to correctly identify, with a simple \textit{three filter method}, a population of emission-line galaxies at various redshifts. We show that the $4000\AA$ break in the spectral energy distribution of galaxies can be misidentified as line emission. However, all significant excess (larger than 0.4 magnitudes) can be correctly and unambiguously attributed to emission line galaxies. Our goal is to morphologically classify the sources identified in the images of the J-PLUS early data release (EDR) into compact (stars) or extended (galaxies) using a suited Bayesian classifier. J-PLUS sources exhibit two distinct populations in the r-band magnitude vs. concentration plane, corresponding to compact and extended sources. We modelled the two-population distribution with a skewed Gaussian for compact objects and a log-normal function for the extended ones. The derived model and the number density prior based on J-PLUS EDR data were used to estimate the Bayesian probability of a source to be star or galaxy. This procedure was applied pointing-by-pointing to account for varying observing conditions and sky position. Finally, we combined the morphological information from g, r, and i broad bands in order to improve the classification of low signal-to-noise sources. The derived probabilities are used to compute the pointing-by-pointing number counts of stars and galaxies. The former increases as we approach to the Milky Way disk, and the latter are similar across the probed area. The comparison with SDSS in the common regions is satisfactory up to r ~ 21, with consistent numbers of stars and galaxies, and consistent distributions in concentration and (g - i) colour spaces. We implement a morphological star/galaxy classifier based on PDF analysis, providing meaningful probabilities for J-PLUS sources to one magnitude deeper (r ~ 21) than a classical boolean classification. These probabilities are suited for the statistical study of 150k stars and 101k galaxies with 15 < r < 21 present in the 31.7 deg2 of the J-PLUS EDR. A complete census of baryons in the late universe is a long-standing challenge due to the intermediate temperate and rarefied character of the majority of cosmic gas. To gain insight into this problem, we extract measurements of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect from the cross-correlation of angular redshift fluctuations maps, which contain precise information about the cosmic density and velocity fields, and CMB maps high-pass filtered using aperture photometry; we refer to this technique as ARF-kSZ tomography. Remarkably, we detect significant cross-correlation for a wide range of redshifts and filter apertures using 6dF galaxies, BOSS galaxies, and SDSS quasars as tracers, yielding a 11 sigma detection of the kSZ effect. We then leverage these measurements to set constraints on the location, density, and abundance of gas inducing the kSZ effect, finding that this gas resides outside dark matter haloes, presents densities ranging from 10 to 250 times the cosmic average, and comprises half of cosmic baryons. Taken together, these findings indicate that ARF-kSZ tomography provides a nearly complete census of intergalactic gas from z=0 to 5., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a new cosmological test using the distribution of galaxies around cosmic voids without assuming a fiducial cosmology. The test is based on a physical model for the void-galaxy cross-correlation function projected along and perpendicular to the line of sight. We treat correlations in terms of void-centric angular distances and redshift differences between void-galaxy pairs, hence it is not necessary to assume a fiducial cosmology. This model reproduces the coupled dynamical (Kaiser effect, RSD) and geometrical (Alcock-Paczynski effect, GD) distortions that affect the correlation measurements. It also takes into account the scale mixing due to the projection ranges in both directions. The model is general, so it can be applied to an arbitrary cylindrical binning scheme, not only in the case of the projected correlations. It primarily depends on two cosmological parameters: $\Omega_m$, the matter fraction of the Universe today (sensitive to GD), and $\beta$, the ratio between the growth rate factor of density perturbations and the tracer bias (sensitive to RSD). In the context of the new generation of galaxy spectroscopic surveys, we calibrated the test using the Millennium XXL simulation for different redshifts. The method successfully recovers the cosmological parameters. We studied the effect of measuring with different projection ranges, finding robust results up to wide ranges. The resulting data covariance matrices are relatively small, which reduces the noise in the Gaussian likelihood analysis and will allow the usage of a smaller number of mock catalogues. We use a suite of high-resolution $N$-body simulations and state-of-the-art perturbation theory to improve the code halofit, which predicts the nonlinear matter power spectrum. We restrict attention to parameters in the vicinity of the Planck Collaboration's best fit. On large-scales ($k\lesssim 0.07 h/{\rm Mpc}$), our model evaluates the 2-loop calculation from the Multi-point Propagator Theory of Bernardeau et al.(2012). On smaller scales ($k \gtrsim 0.7 h/{\rm Mpc}$), we transition to a smoothing-spline-fit model, that characterises the differences between the Takahashi et al. (2012) recalibration of halofit2012 and our simulations. We use an additional suite of simulations to explore the response of the power spectrum to variations in the cosmological parameters. In particular, we examine: the time evolution of the dark energy equation of state ($w_0$, $w_a$); the matter density $\Omega_m$; the physical densities of CDM and baryons $(\omega_c,\omega_b)$; and the primordial power spectrum amplitude $A_s$, spectral index $n_s$, and its running $\alpha$. We construct correction functions, which improve halofit's dependence on cosmological parameters. Our newly calibrated model reproduces all of our data with $\lesssim1\%$ precision. Including various systematic errors, such as choice of $N$-body code, resolution, and through inspection of the scaled second order derivatives, we estimate the accuracy to be $\lesssim3\%$ over the hyper-cube: $w_0\in\{-1.05,-0.95\}$, $w_a\in\{-0.4,0.4\}$, $\Omega_{\rm m,0}\in\{0.21,0.4\}$, $\omega_{\rm c}\in\{0.1,0.13\}$, $\omega_{\rm b}\in\{2.0,2.4\}$, $n_{\rm s}\in\{0.85,1.05\}$, $A_s\in\{1.72\times 10^{-9},2.58\times 10^{-9}\}$, $\alpha\in\{-0.2,0.2\}$ up to $k=9.0 h/{\rm Mpc}$ and out to $z=3$.
