National audience; De nombreux progrès technologiques sont observables dans plusieurs domaines en fabrication (structures des machines, procédés innovants, logiciels CAO/FAO) depuis une trentaine d'années mais relativement peu concernent la programmation destinée aux machines à commande numérique (MOCN). L'ensemble de l'industrie est encore basé sur une chaine numérique hétérogène CAO/FAO/Commande Numérique (CN) et utilise des langages qui n'ont pas évolué depuis leur normalisation en 1980 (Code G – ISO 6983). Aux vues de l'arrivée des procédés émergents et la multiplication de machines à structure complexe, une importance croissante est portée à la prise en compte à la fois du moyen de fabrication, du process ainsi que du produit dans la génération de trajectoire, dans un but d'optimisation de la fabrication. Ce papier a pour originalité de présenter l'intérêt de combiner une commande numérique à structure ouverte et le langage émergent STEP-NC (ISO 14649) dans le but de générer des trajectoires optimales on-line.

Modern manufacturing requires a flexible numerical chain of industrial products, in particular the relationships between CAD/CAM solutions and CNC. On longer can CNC controllers restrain their tasks at the execution of inflexible orders and choices made at earlier stages of the numerical chain. Thus, in a STEP-compliant environment, the CNC controller possesses a broad decision-making power to optimize the NC programming according to the machining equipment properties. The NC programming environment has then to face new challenges. In the first part of the chapter, an implementation method leading to STEP-NC advanced manufacturing is proposed. This approach is divided into three successive sceneries of STEP-NC deployment for progressive improvements. Industrial concerns can also use STEPcompliant applications with their current machining equipment. In the second part of the chapter, the STEP-NC Platform for Advanced and Intelligent Programming (SPAIM) developed at IRCCyN is presented. This platform controls current industrial machine tools directly from STEP-NC files, which benefits from this new data model. It also includes new tool-paths programming methods, such as pattern strategies for trochoidal milling and plunging tool-paths. The platform demonstrates the benefits of STEP-NC for industry and also forms a basis for future STEP-NC related research and validation.

National audience; La programmation actuelle des machines outils à commandes numériques s'appuie sur le standard ISO 6983, ou code G, dont les principes datent du début des années 60. Ce standard désuet ne satisfait plus les attentes actuelles de la programmation de machines toujours plus évoluées et complexes. Le standard STEP-NC offre de nouvelles solutions et l'intégration de la fabrication au sein de la chaîne numérique complète. Ce papier expose les choix et la situation des travaux de l'IRCCyN dans ce domaine prometteur. Une plateforme interprétée STEP-NC a été développée pour pouvoir permettre des démonstrations de l'usinage STEP-NC sur machines outils actuelles. C'est aussi un outil de base pour les futurs travaux et implémentations liés au standard STEP-NC, en particulier en termes de simulation et d'optimisation de l'usinage, des parcours outils et des paramètres opératoires. Cette plateforme ouvre également la voie de travaux sur le concept de supervision multiprocess rendu possible par l'utilisation de la programmation de haut niveau orientée objet du standard STEP-NC.

International audience; Despite substantial improvements CNC manufacturing is still based on dated practices and habits. This is mostly due to the use of ISO 6983 standard (G-codes) combined with vendor specific formats to exchange CAD/CAM/ CNC information. The manufacturing sector is consequently made of a collection of disconnected elements that are difficult to make communicate together. On the contrary STEP-NC approach offers many opportunities to overtake the current situation and rethink CAD/CAM/CNC numerical chains. However, the actual integration of STEP-NC in industrial concerns is quite limited. It is essential to couple this innovative approach with existing equipments. This paper shows how STEP-NC can be an efficient way to reconcile today's interoperability and efficiency demands by introducing the association of two manufacturing platforms: SPAIM, developed at IRCCyN (France), and which controls current industrial machine tools directly from STEP-NC files and IIMP from the University of Auckland (New Zealand), which realizes data portability between heterogeneous proprietary formats, process interoperability. As a result, both approaches lead to improved supervision and integration of the machining systems.

International audience; The current language for CNC programming is G-code which dates from the beginning of the eighties with the norm ISO 6983. With the new technologies, G-code becomes obsolete. It presents drawbacks that create a rupture in the numerical chain at the manufacturing step. A new standard, STEP-NC, aims to overtake these lacks. A STEP-NC file includes all the information for manufacturing, as geometry description of the entities, workplan, machining strategies, tools, etc. For rough pocket milling, the ISO norms propose different kind of classical strategies as bidirectional, parallel or spiral contour, etc. This paper describes a new way of toolpath programming by the repetition of a pattern all along a guide curve. It presents several advantages as building fastness and easiness. The integration of pattern strategies in STEP-NC standard is an other step for the development of these strategies but also for the enrichment of STEP-NC possibilities. A complete STEP-NC numerical chain was built, integrating these pattern strategies. The implementation of this approach of building pattern strategies was made by the development of tools for the complete manufacturing cycle, from the CAD file to the machined part. Several application cases were experimented on machine tool to validate this approach and the efficiency of the developped tools.

These research works aim to define new optimisation ways for CNC machine tool programming that are enabled by the development of parallel kinematics milling machines. Four research axes were identified. The first one deals with the preparing of machining operations and evaluates the implementation of new milling tool paths (plunge milling and trochoïdal milling) on parallel NC machine tools. The main object is to determine the best milling strategy according to the application constraints and the employed machining mean. Then, the second axis focuses on incremental sheet forming which is an emerging manufacturing process that can be carried out on milling machine tools. We prove that an adapted programming of the toolpath can strongly optimise its implementation. Moreover its capability depends on the one of the selected machine tool. On the third axis, we propose a new toolpath programming approach, called ICAM (Intelligent Computer Aided Manufacturing). It optimises the machining programming thanks to an evaluation of process data made into the CNC. Finally, the fourth axis proposes two evolutions for CNC programming. The first one deals with the rise of e-manufacturing and its consequences on the environment and the use of NC machine tools. The second one presents the development of a new data standard, Step_NC. This latest stands for the ideal background regarding to the optimisations proposed about the other research axes, while leading to further progress in NC programming.; Les travaux de recherche présentés visent à définir des voies d'optimisation concernant la programmation des MOCN liées au développement des machines à structure parallèle. Nous avons identifié quatre axes de recherche permettant d'adapter la programmation de la machine à l'application visée. Le premier axe traite de la préparation de la fabrication, en particulier le choix de la stratégie d'usinage, en évaluant le potentiel de nouvelles trajectoires (tréflage et usinage trochoïdal) et en définissant des fenêtres de performance pour les principales stratégies d'usinage en fonction des aptitudes de la machine employée. Le deuxième axe se focalise sur le formage incrémental, procédé émergent. Nous montrons que le recours à une programmation adaptée améliore la mise en oeuvre de ce procédé et que les voies d'optimisation sont fonction des capacités de la MOCN choisie. Au cours du troisième axe, nous proposons une nouvelle approche de programmation avancée des parcours d'outil, la méthode ICAM (Intelligent Computer Aided Manufacturing). Elle permet d'optimiser la programmation implémentée en s'appuyant sur une évaluation par le DCN de données process en cours de fabrication. Le quatrième axe porte enfin sur les évolutions à moyen terme de la programmation en s'intéressant d'un côté aux mutations de l'environnement des MOCN générées par le développement de l'e-manufacturing et d'un autre côté à la mise en place d'un nouveau standard de programmation des machine outils, le format Step_NC. Ce dernier constitue un cadre idéal aux optimisations proposées pour les autres axes de recherche, en plus de conduire à de nouvelles avancées en programmation des MOCN.

International audience; Pocket milling is an essential issue in rough milling. Although the technology progress increased the machining capacities and enabled new machine structures, no significant evolution was observed about pocket milling trajectories. Trochoïds and plunge milling are new types of strategies which have found practical applications in hard materials rough milling, especially die manufacturing. On a productivity point of view, they were not favourable until the development of high-speed machine tools. This paper aims at evaluating the potential of trochoïdal milling and plunge cutting strategies in rough pocket millings. Algorithms were developed to generate trochoïdal and plunge cutting trajectories for pocket milling, with cycle time optimisation regarding to milled surfaces quality. Then, an experimental campaign has been done to compare the new strategies with classical ones. The study focused both on productivity and quality issues. The influence of the machine tool capacities and architecture was also examined. Two different high speed milling dedicated machine tools were tested: a serial three-axis machine tool with "classic" dynamic capacities, and a parallel kinematics five-axis machine tool with high dynamic capacities. The results of this work leads to a better definition of the strengths and weaknesses of trochoïdal milling and plunge cutting strategies in aluminium alloys rough machining with the focus to optimize the choice of strategies.
