Abstract

We propose an original method to couple light into a whispering-gallery mode resonator. This method benefits from the mode selectivity and robustness of the prism-coupling along with the single-mode propagation of the fiber taper. It consists in a prism shaped crystal with a waveguide inscribed inside it. Abstract

A regenerator of a Stirling machine alternately absorbs and releases heat from and to the working fluid which allows to recycle rejected heat during theoretical isochoric processes. This work focuses on a milli-regenerator fabricated with a multiple jet molding process. The regenerator is a porous medium filled with a dense pillar matrix. The pillars have a geometrical lens shape. Two metallic layers (chromium and copper) are deposited on the polymer pillars to increase heat transfer inside the regenerator. 26. Optimisation d'un microéchangeur à partir d'un bilan entropique

Abstract

Le développement quasi exponentiel des MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) dans l'industrie permet d'accroître la densité de composants sur différents supports électroniques et informatiques. L'augmentation résultante des sources de chaleur nécessite alors d'intensifier les transferts thermiques dans le but de refroidir ces composants. Le développement des micro-systèmes tire profit de la technologie MEMS. En effet, à ces échelles miniatures, des procédés de micro-fabrication sont utilisés pour la réalisation des prototypes. Nous avons ainsi conçu un micro-échangeur à base d'assemblages de parois en verre et silicium constituants des canaux de dimensions micrométriques pouvant être traversés par un gaz tel que l'azote, l'argon ou l'hélium. L'objectif de cet article est de déterminer les performances optimales d'un micro-échangeur. Les écoulements en microcanal avec transfert de chaleur sont le siège de transferts thermiques et de pertes de charge fonctions de conditions géométriques (diamètre hydraulique, longueur, surface) et thermofluidiques (masse volumique, viscosité, chaleur spécifique). La disparité dans les résultats obtenus dans la littérature concernant les micro-écoulements en régime permanent est essentiellement due aux effets de raréfaction, de rapport d'aspect du micro-canal et de la rugosité de la paroi. En effet, des études portées sur des micro-échangeurs thermiques montrent que les échanges thermiques sont nettement améliorés contre une augmentation de pertes de charge pour les micro-écoulements. Des études effectuées sur des micro-écoulements d'azote, d'hélium et d'argon montrent qu'en régime laminaire, pour des faibles débits massiques, le coefficient d'échange thermique convectif se trouve réduit par rapport à celui escompté par calculs, ce décalage étant plus notable pour des faibles débits. Il est également souligné l'importance de la conduction axiale dans les parois et sa prépondérance par rapport à celle dans le fluide ce qui favorise le mélange et diminue ainsi l'efficacité du micro-échangeur. Un bilan entropique permettra de distinguer, sous la forme d'un facteur adimensionnel de production d'entropie, la part entre les irréversibilités fluidiques et thermiques en fonction du débit de gaz, du gradient de température entre le gaz et les parois, du coefficient de frottement et du nombre de Reynolds.

28. In-situ SEM microrobotics for versatile force/deformation characterization: application to third-body MoS2wear particles

Abstract

This article explores the challenges and solutions in the physical characterization of materials at the microscale using robotized systems, with a specific focus on manipulating and characterizing micrometer-sized particles with different and complex 3D shapes and internal sub-micrometer structures. In this paper, the studied particles are Molybdenum diSulfide (MoS2) based materials generated within the contact interface during friction. These particles are being studied because they offer a particularly promising solution for reducing mechanical friction and the associated high energy losses. However, they are distributed randomly within the contact area and possess intricate sub-micrometer structures. Characterization demands precise manipulation techniques in an in-situ Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) environment. To address these challenges, existing commercial micro and nanomanipulation tools are integrated within a vacuum SEM chamber, and robotics strategies are investigated to enable the whole process from particle preparation, and manipulation setup definition, to effective MoS2particle characterization all in-situ SEM. A set of several complementary experimental investigations are done and involve force measurement and deformation estimation studies, leading to the first qualitative results on MoS2based particles directly from the friction track. The work contributes to advancements in both microscale manipulation and characterization. It also has implications for lubrication research.

Abstract

A sulfur hexafluoride based reactive ion etching process allowing to etch several micron deep holes with diameters of the order of a few microns in lithium niobate is reported. Etching of deep structures with aspect ratios up to 1.5 was made possible through the use of an electroplated nickel mask exhibiting a selectivity as high as 20 with respect to lithium niobate. Several crystallograpic orientations were investigated, although particular interest was paid to Y-axis oriented substrates. Photoresist as well as metal masks were also tested and their selectivity was compared. The influence of process parameters such as applied rf power or operating pressure on the sidewall slope angle of the etched patterns was investigated. The technique has been successfully applied to the fabrication of phononic crystals consisting of periodical arrays of 9 μm diameter, 10 μm deep holes, with a 10 μm period, and presenting sidewall angles as high as 73° etched in Y-axis oriented lithium niobate. Abstract

International audience; This paper presents a method to determine the mechanical properties of piezoelectric thin films. The vibrational behavior of microcantilevers and clamped–clamped beams actuated by aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric films were analyzed in order to investigate the suitability of these devices as characterization tools. Different geometries of resonators composed of a free-standing structure made up of a TiPt/AlN/TiPt piezoelectric stack were tested. The out-of-plane motion of the resonators was assessed by laser Doppler vibrometry. An AlN Young’s modulus of about 200GPa was extracted from resonance-frequency measurements by means of Comsol software simulations that allow taking into account AlN underetching. This value of Young’s modulus was compared to the one measured by a nanoindentationtechnique. The quality of crystallinity was also assessed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. We then estimated the residual stress (about 200MPa) using an interferometry measurement.

Abstract

International audience; This paper reports on an original architecture of microfabricated alkali vapor cell designed for miniature atomic clocks. The cell combines diffraction gratings with anisotropically etched single-crystalline silicon sidewalls to route a normally-incident beam in a cavity oriented along the substrate plane. Gratings have been specifically designed to diffract circularly polarized light in the first order, the latter having an angle of diffraction matching the (111) sidewalls orientation. Then, the length of the cavity where light interacts with alkali atoms can be extended. We demonstrate that a longer cell allows to reduce the beam diameter, while preserving the clock performances. As the cavity depth and the beam diameter are reduced, collimation can be performed in a tighter space. This solution relaxes the constraints on the device packaging and is suitable for wafer-level assembly. Several cells have been fabricated and characterized in a clock setup using coherent population trapping spectroscopy. The measured signals exhibit null power linewidths down to 2.23 kHz and high transmission contrasts up to 17%. A high contrast-to-linewidth ratio is found at a linewidth of 4.17 kHz and a contrast of 5.2% in a 7-mm-long cell despite a beam diameter reduced to 600 μm.
