The 2021-22 High-Energy Physics Community Planning Exercise (a.k.a. ``Snowmass 2021'') was organized by the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. Snowmass 2021 was a scientific study that provided an opportunity for the entire U.S. particle physics community, along with its international partners, to identify the most important scientific questions in High Energy Physics for the following decade, with an eye to the decade after that, and the experiments, facilities, infrastructure, and R&D needed to pursue them. This Snowmass summary report synthesizes the lessons learned and the main conclusions of the Community Planning Exercise as a whole and presents a community-informed synopsis of U.S. particle physics at the beginning of 2023. This document, along with the Snowmass reports from the various subfields, will provide input to the 2023 Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) subpanel of the U.S. High-Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP), and will help to guide and inform the activity of the U.S. particle physics community during the next decade and beyond., Comment: 75 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. This version fixes an important omission from Table 2, adds two references that were not available at the time of the original version, fixes a minor few typos, and adds a small amount of material to section 1.1.3

The US particle physics community planning exercise (a.k.a. Snowmass) is organized every 7 to 9 years to provide a forum for discussions among the entire particle physics community to develop a scientific vision for the future of particle physics in the U.S. and its international partners. The Snowmass 21 Accelerator Frontier activities include discussions on high-energy hadron and lepton colliders, high-intensity beams for neutrino research and for Physics Beyond Colliders, accelerator technologies, science, education and outreach as well as the progress of core accelerator technologies, including RF, magnets, targets and sources. Here we summarize the Snowmass 21 discussions on future HEP accelerator facilities.

The Snowmass 2021 Implementation Task Force has been established to evaluate the proposed future accelerator projects for performance, technology readiness, schedule, cost, and environmental impact. Corresponding metrics has been developed for uniform comparison of the proposals ranging from Higgs/EW factories to multi-TeV lepton, hadron and ep collider facilities, based on traditional and advanced acceleration technologies. The Linac to End Station A (LESA) beamline is being constructed at SLAC and will provide a near-CW beam of multi-GeV electrons to the SLAC End Station A for experiments in particle physics. The 1st half of LESA is ready for commissioning at the end of FY22 and the full beamline will be operational Q1 FY24. The low-current multi-GeV electron beam is produced parasitically by the superconducting RF (SRF) linac for the LCLS-II/LCLS-II-HE X-ray Free Electron Laser. LESA is designed to host experiments to detect light dark matter such as the Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) as well as a wide range of other experiments and test beams requiring near-CW electron currents ranging from pA to {\mu}A., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Reducing the intrinsic emittance of photocathodes is one of the most promising routes to improving the brightness of electron sources. However, when emittance growth occurs during beam transport (for example, due to space-charge), it is possible that this emittance growth overwhelms the contribution of the photocathode and, thus, in this case source emittance improvements are not beneficial. Using multi-objective genetic optimization, we investigate the role intrinsic emittance plays in determining the final emittance of several space-charge dominated photoinjectors, including those for high repetition rate free electron lasers and ultrafast electron diffraction. We introduce a new metric to predict the scale of photocathode emittance improvements that remain beneficial and explain how additional tuning is required to take full advantage of new photocathode technologies. Additionally, we determine the scale of emittance growth due to point-to-point Coulomb interactions with a fast tree-based space-charge solver. Our results show that in the realistic high brightness photoinjector applications under study, the reduction of thermal emittance to values as low as 50 pm/um (1 meV MTE) remains a viable option for the improvement of beam brightness., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

An X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) is a new type of hard X-ray source that would produce fully coherent pulses with meV bandwidth and stable intensity. The XFELO complements existing sources based on self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) from high-gain X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL) that produce ultra-short pulses with broad-band chaotic spectra. We have explored a concept for an advanced Normal-Conducting Radio-Frequency (NCRF) C-band linear accelerator (linac) structure to achieve a high gradient, high power e$^+$e$^-$ linear collider in the TeV class. This design study represents the first comprehensive investigation for an emerging class of distributed coupling accelerator topology exploring nominal cavity geometries, frequency and temperature of operation. The structure features internal manifolds for distributing RF power separately to each cell, permitting the full structure geometry to be designed for high shunt impedance and low breakdown. Optimized within operational constraints, we find that it is advantageous for the structure to be cooled directly by liquid nitrogen (LN), further increasing the shunt impedance. A crucial part of this design process has been cost optimization, which is largely driven by the cost of peak RF power. The first operation of a distributed coupling structure at cryogenic temperatures and the nominal operating gradient 120 MeV/m is also presented, demonstrating the feasibility of achieving high-gradient performance with a cryogenically-cooled normal-conducting accelerating structure.

This paper describes the concept for the DArk Sector Experiments at LCLS-II (DASEL) facility which provides a near-CW beam of multi-GeV electrons to the SLAC End Station A for experiments in particle physics. The low-current multi-GeV electron beam is produced parasitically by the superconducting RF linac for the LCLS-II X-ray Free Electron Laser, which is under construction at SLAC. DASEL is designed to host experiments to detect light dark matter such as the Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) but can be configured to support a wide range of other experiments requiring current ranging from pico-amps to micro-amps.

Plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) holds much promise for advancing the energy frontier because it can potentially provide a 1000-fold or more increase in acceleration gradient with excellent power efficiency in respect with standard technologies. Most of the advances in beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration were obtained by a UCLA/USC/SLAC collaboration working at the SLAC FFTB[ ]. These experiments have shown that plasmas can accelerate and focus both electron and positron high energy beams, and an accelerating gradient in excess of 50 GeV/m can be sustained in an 85 cm-long plasma. The FFTB experiments were essentially proof-of-principle experiments that showed the great potential of plasma accelerators. The FACET[ ] test facility at SLAC will in the period 2012-2016 further study several issues that are directly related to the applicability of PWFA to a high-energy collider, in particular two-beam acceleration where the witness beam experiences high beam loading (required for high efficiency), small energy spread and small emittance dilution (required to achieve luminosity). The PWFA-LC concept presented in this document is an attempt to find the best design that takes advantage of the PWFA, identify the critical parameters to be achieved and eventually the necessary R&D to address their feasibility. It best benefits from the extensive R&D that has been performed for conventional rf linear colliders during the last twenty years, especially ILC[ ] and CLIC[ ], with a potential for a comparably lower power consumption and cost., Comment: Submitted to the proceedings of the Snowmass Process CSS2013. Most studies of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) have only considered the radiation from independent dipole magnets. However, in the damping rings of future linear colliders, a large fraction of the radiation power will be emitted in damping wigglers. In this paper, the longitudinal wakefield and impedance due to CSR in a wiggler are derived in the limit of a large wiggler parameter $K$. After an appropriate scaling, the results can be expressed in terms of universal functions, which are independent of $K$. Analytical asymptotic results are obtained for the wakefield in the limit of large and small distances, and for the impedance in the limit of small and high frequencies., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We present a ground motion model for the SLAC site. This model is based on recent ground motion studies performed at SLAC as well as on historical data. The model includes wave-like, diffusive and systematic types of motion. An attempt is made to relate measurable secondary properties of the ground motion with more basic characteristics such as the layered geological structure of the surrounding earth, depth of the tunnel, etc. This model is an essential step in evaluating sites for a future linear collider., Comment: submitted to XX International Linac Conference
