24. Vacuum ultraviolet irradiation for mitigating dissolved organic nitrogen and formation of haloacetonitriles

Abstract

The main objective of this work was to investigate the feasibility of using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, 185 + 254 nm) and ultraviolet (UV, 254 nm) for the reduction of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and haloacetonitrile formation potential (HANFP) of surface water and treated effluent wastewater samples. The results showed that the reduction of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), DON, hydrophobicity (HPO), absorbance at 254 nm (UV254), and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (FEEM) of both water samples by VUV was higher compared to using UV. The addition of H2O2 remarkably improved the performances of VUV and UV. VUV/H2O2 exhibited the highest removal efficiency for DOC and DON. Even though HANFP increased at the early stage, its concentration decreased (19–72%) at the end of treatment (60 min). Decreases in DON (30–41%) and DOC (51–57%) led to HANFP reduction (53–72%). Moreover, FEEM revealed that substantial reduction in soluble microbial product-like compounds (nitrogen-rich organic) had a strong correlation with HANFP reduction, implying that this group of compounds act as a main precursor of HANs. The VUV/H2O2 system significantly reduced HANFP more than UV/H2O2 and therefore is suitable for controlling HAN precursors and HAN formation in drinking water and reclaimed wastewater.

Abstract

In the past two decades, ozone-based advanced oxidation processes, known as enhanced ozonation processes (EOPs), have been extensively investigated for the removal of emerging organic contaminants in water, such as pesticides, endocrine-disrupting compounds, and pharmaceuticals. EOPs offer an advantage by producing highly oxidizing radicals, such as hydroxyl radicals, to oxidize recalcitrant organic compounds. Although the EOPs are able to effectively remove emerging contaminants, several studies reported the formation of bromate, which has drawn significant attention because of its potential carcinogenicity. This issue becomes challenging for the utilization of EOPs on bromide containing water. Therefore, this work critically reviews and summarizes the mechanisms, influencing factors, advantages and disadvantages, and control strategies for bromate formation by four EOPs, i.e., peroxone and e-peroxone, photolytic ozonation, heterogeneous ozonation, and sonolytic ozonation. Various economic and technical characteristics of EOPs were also compared. Mathematical modeling, pilot and full-scale data, and secondary pollutant potential (toxic metals leaching from catalyst) have been identified as knowledge gaps, and future research should seek to address these issues. Abstract

Triclocarban (TCC) is a widely used antimicrobial agent and has been identified as a subsurface contaminant. This study demonstrates enhanced TCC remediation using biochar-immobilized cells. The influence of operating and environmental parameters (including initial TCC concentration, pH, cell loading, and co-carbon source concentration) on TCC removal was investigated using one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) and response surface methodology (RSM) analyses to determine the TCC removal performance. Pseudomonas fluorescensstrain MC46 (MC46) was selected and supported on biochar from carbonized residue of wood vinegar production. The OFAT and RSM of the operating and environmental parameters resulted in TCC removal efficiencies of between 30%–83%. The initial TCC concentration (5 ̶ 20mgL-1) significantly affected the removal rate (0.06 ̶ 9.23mgL-1d-1). The self-substrate inhibition kinetics followed a modified Edwards model with Kiof 599.65mgL-1. Compared to previous work, higher Ki(less inhibition) were observed in this study and was due to the integration of biodegradation by MC46 and adsorption on the biochar-immobilized MC46. The biochar-immobilized cell technology is an efficient, sustainable, and economical method for future contaminant removal.
