Fe2Al5 contains a Fe-Al matrix through which are threaded disordered one-dimensional chains of overlapping Al sites. We report magnetic, nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR), and specific-heat measurements addressing its magnetic and vibrational properties. The Curie-type susceptibility is found to be due to dilute moments, likely due to wrong-site Fe atoms. 27Al NMR shift and spin-lattice relaxation measurements confirm these to be indirectly coupled through a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida-type interaction. Specific-heat results indicate a large density of low-energy vibrational modes. These excitations generate a linear-T contribution to the specific heat, which however freezes out below about 10 K. These results are attributed to the presence of anharmonic vibrational modes associated with the disordered structural chains., Comment: 8 pages, 13 figures

Granular superconductivity effects in a polycrystalline sample of ruthenocuprate RuSr$_2$(Gd$_{1.5}$Ce$_{0.5})$Cu$_2$O$_{10-\delta}$ are studied. The main attention has been devoted to manifestation of these effects in current and magnetic-field dependences of resistive transition to superconducting state. It is found that current dependences of differential resistance taken at different temperatures intersect strictly at two definite values of current demonstrating crossing point effect. This phenomenon has been explained taking into account inhomogeneous state of intergrain medium which can be considered as a two-component system. The particular attention has been given to magnetoresistance (MR) hysteresis in mixed state of this inhomogeneous system and to influence of applied current and temperature on this phenomenon. Two types of hysteresis (clockwise and anticlockwise) have been found with transition from clockwise to anticlockwise hysteresis with increasing temperature. Stepwise structure in MR hysteretic curves has been observed in low-field range. Possible reasons of the change in hysteresis behavior with increasing temperature and appearance of the stepwise structure in MR curves are discussed taking into consideration inhomogeneous state of the granular superconductor studied., Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures

We describe a pulsed rotating supersonic beam source, evolved from an ancestral device [M. Gupta and D. Herschbach, J. Phys. Chem. A 105, 1626 (2001)]. The beam emerges from a nozzle near the tip of a hollow rotor which can be spun at high-speed to shift the molecular velocity distribution downward or upward over a wide range. Here we consider mostly the slowing mode. Introducing a pulsed gas inlet system, cryocooling, and a shutter gate eliminated the main handicap of the original device, in which continuous gas flow imposed high background pressure. The new version provides intense pulses, of duration 0.1-0.6 ms (depending on rotor speed) and containing ~10^12 molecules at lab speeds as low as 35 m/s and ~ 10^15 molecules at 400 m/s. Beams of any molecule available as a gas can be slowed (or speeded); e.g., we have produced slow and fast beams of rare gases, O2, Cl2, NO2, NH3, and SF6. For collision experiments, the ability to scan the beam speed by merely adjusting the rotor is especially advantageous when using two merged beams. By closely matching the beam speeds, very low relative collision energies can be attained without making either beam very slow., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures

The point-contact (PC) spectra of the Andreev reflection dV/dI curves of the superconducting rare-earth nickel borocarbide ErNi2B2C (Tc=11 K) have been analyzed in the "one-gap" and "two-gap" approximations using the generalized Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (GBTK) model and the Beloborod'ko (BB) model allowing for the pair-breaking effect of magnetic impurities. Experimental and calculated curves have been compared not only in shape, but in magnitude as well, which provide more reliable data for determining the temperature dependence of the energy gap (or superconducting order parameter) \Delta(T). The anisotropic effect of antiferromagnetic ordering at T_N =6 K on the superconducting gap/order parameter has been determined: as the temperature is lowered, \Delta(T) decreases by 25% in the c-direction and only by 4% in the ab-plane. It is found that the pair-breaking parameter increases in the vicinity of the magnetic transitions, the increase being more pronounced in the c-direction. Magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples of RuSr$_2$(Gd$_{1.5}$Ce$_{0.5}$)Cu$_{2}$O$_{10-\delta}$, as-prepared (by solid-state reaction) and annealed (12 hours at 845$^{\circ}$C) in pure oxygen at different pressure (30, 62 and 78 atm) are presented. Specific heat and magnetization were investigated in the temperature range 1.8--300 K with a magnetic field up to 8 T. Specific heat, $C(T)$, shows a jump at the superconducting transition (with onset at $T\approx 37.5$ K). Below 20 K, a Schottky-type anomaly becomes apparent in $C(T)$. This low-temperature anomaly can be attributed to splitting of the ground term ${^8}S_{7/2}$ of paramagnetic Gd$^{3+}$ ions by internal and external magnetic fields. It is found that curves $C(T)$ taken for different values of magnetic field have the same crossing point (at $T_{\ast}\approx 2.7$ K) for all samples studied. At the same time, $C(H)$ curves taken for different temperatures have a crossing point at a characteristic field $H_{\ast}\approx 3.7$ T. These effects can be considered as manifestation of the crossing-point phenomenon which is supposed to be inherent for strongly correlated electron systems., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to J. An general survey of the superconducting (SC) gap study in the title compounds by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy is presented. The SC gap was determined from dV/dI of PCs employing the well-known theory of conductivity for normal metal-superconductor PCs accounting Andreev reflection. The theory was modified by including pair-breaking effects considering the presence of magnetic rare-earth ions. A possible multiband structure of these compounds was also taken into account. The PC study of the gap in the Er-compound (TN=6KTc=6.5K) the SC gap has a BCS-like dependence in the AF state. The SC gap for R = Ho (TN=5.2K

Point contacts (PC) Andreev reflection dV/dI spectra for the antiferromagnetic (T_N =6K) superconductor (Tc=11K) ErNi2B2C have been measured for the two main crystallographic directions. Observed retention of the Andreev reflection minima in dV/dI up to Tc directly points to unusual superconducting order parameter (OP) vanishing at Tc. Temperature dependence of OP was obtained from dV/dI using recent theory of Andreev reflection including pair-breaking effect. For the first time existence of a two superconducting OPs in ErNi2B2C is shown. The metamagnetic transitions in single-crystal ErNi$_2$B$_2$C have been studied at 1.9 K with a Quantum Design torque magnetometer. The critical fields of the transitions depend crucially on the angle between applied field and the easy axis [100]. Torque measurements have been made while changing angular direction of the magnetic field (parallel to basal tetragonal $ab$-planes) in a wide angular range (more than two quadrants). Sequences of metamagnetic transitions with increasing field are found to be different for the magnetic field along (or close enough to) the easy [100] axis from that near the hard [110] axis. Metamagnetic transitions in single-crystal rare-earth nickel borocarbide HoNi$_2$B$_2$C have been studied at T\approx 1.9 K with a Quantum Design torque magnetometer. This compound is highly anisotropic with a variety of metamagnetic states at low temperature which includes antiferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, non-collinear and ferromagnetic-like (saturated paramagnet) states. The critical fields of the transitions depend crucially on the angle $\theta$ between applied field and the easy axis [110]. Measurements of torque along the c-axis have been made while changing the angular direction of the magnetic field (parallel to basal tetragonal $ab$-planes) and with changing field at fixed angle over a wide angular range. Two new phase boundaries in the region of the non-collinear phase have been observed, and the direction of the magnetization in this phase has been precisely determined. At low field the antiferromagnetic phase is observed to be multidomain. In the angular range very close to the hard axis [100] ($-6^{\circ} \lesssim\phi \lesssim 6^{\circ}$, where $\phi$ is the angle between field and the hard axis) the magnetic behavior is found to be ``frustrated'' with a mixture of phases with different directions of the magnetization., Comment: submitted to Phys. An overview of the recent efforts in point-contact (PC) spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductors RNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting (SC) state is given. The results of measurements of the PC electron- boson(phonon) interaction spectral function are presented. Phonon maxima and crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations are observed in the PC spectra of compounds with R=Dy, Ho, Er and Tm, while for R=Y a dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV is characteristic. Additionally, non-phonon and non-CEF maxima are observed near 3 meV in R=Ho and near 6 meV in R=Dy. Directional PC study of the SC gap gives evidence for the multi-band nature of superconductivity in R=Y, Lu. At low temperature the SC gap in R=Ho exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like dependence, which vanishes above T_c^*= 5.6K< T_c=8.5K, where a specifc magnetic ordering starts to play a role. The metamagnetic transitions in single-crystal rare-earth nickel borocarbide HoNi_{2}B_{2}C and ErNi_{2}B_{2}C have been studied at 1.9 K with a Quantum Design torque magnetometer. Resistivity, thermoelectric power, heat capacity and magnetization for samples of RuSr_2(Gd_{1.5}Ce_{0.5})Cu_{2}O_{10-\delta} were investigated in the temperature range 1.8-300 K with a magnetic field up to 8 T. The resistive transitions to the superconducting state are found to be determined by the inhomogeneous (granular) structure, characterized by the intragranular, T_{c0}, and intergranular, T_{cg}, transition temperatures. Heat capacity, C(T), shows a jump at the superconducting transition temperature T_{c0}\approx 37.5 K. A Schottky-like anomaly is found in C(T) below 20 K. It is shown that the two-gap approximation is applicable for describing the $dV/dI(V)$ spectra of LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C-Ag point contacts in a wide interval of temperatures. The values and the temperature dependences of the large and the small gaps in the $ab$ plane and in the $c$ direction were estimated using the generalized BTK model and the equations of Beloborodko. In the BCS extrapolation the critical temperature of the small gap is 10 $K$ in the $ab$ plane and 14.5 $K$ in the $c$ direction. The absolute values of the gaps are $\Delta_0^{ab}=2.16$ $meV$ and $\Delta_0^c=1.94$ $meV$. For the large gaps the critical temperature coincides with the bulk $T_c$, $T_c^{bulk}=16.8$ $K$, and their absolute values are very close, being about 3 $meV$ in both orientations. In the $c$ direction the contributions to the conductivity from the small and the large gaps remain practically identical up to $10 \div 11$ $K$. The paper describes a study of the magnetic, transport and magnetoresistive properties of La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} (x\approx 0.33) crystals prepared by the floating-zone method. We found that these properties testify to rather good crystal perfection of the sample studied. In particular, a huge magnetoresistance ([R(0)-R(H)]/R(H) in the field H = 5 T is about 2680 %) is found near the Curie temperature (216 K). At the same time, some distinct features of measured properties indicate the influence of extrinsic inhomogeneities arising due to technological factors in the sample preparation. Analysis of the data obtained shows that these are rare grain boundaries and twins. Specific influence of the grain-boundary-like inhomogeneities on the transport and magnetoresistive properties are considered., Comment: Submitted to Physica B

Point contacts are used to investigate the anisotropy of the superconducting energy gap in LuNi2B2C in the ab plane and along the c axis. It is shown that the experimental curves should be described assuming that the superconducting gap is non-uniformly distributed over the Fermi surface. The largest and the smallest gaps have been estimated by two-gap fitting models. It is found that the largest contribution to the point-contact conductivity in the c direction is made by a smaller gap and, in the ab plane by a larger gap. The deviation from the one-gap BCS model is pronounced in the temperature dependence of the gap in both directions. The temperature range, where the deviation occurs, is for the c direction approximately 1.5 times more than in the ab plane. The \Gamma parameter, allowing quantitatively estimate the gap anisotropy by one-gap fitting, in c direction is also about 1.5 times greater than in the ab plane. Since it is impossible to describe satisfactorily such gap distribution either by the one- or two-gap models, a continuous, dual-maxima model of gap distribution over the Fermi surface should be used to describe superconductivity in this material., Comment: 10 pages, 14 Figs, accepted in PRB

We present here an overview of thermal conductivity behavior in magnetic superconductors: rare-earth nickel borocarbide intermetallic compounds, RNi_{2}B_{2}C, and the 2122 rare-earth rutheno-cuprates. The borocarbide family of intermetallics exhibits the large variety of phenomena - only superconductivity (R = Y, Lu), coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic order (R = Tm, Er, Ho, Lu), only magnetic order (R = Tb, Gd), and heavy fermion behavior (R = Yb) - within the same crystal structure. The rutheno-cuprate Eu_{1.5}Ce_{0.5}RuSr_2Cu_{2}O_{10-\delta} exhibits coexistence of weak ferromagnetism and superconductivity at a surprisingly high temperature (\approx 45 K) and onset of antiferromagnetic order near 200 K. Transport, magnetic, magneto-optical (Kerr effect) and optical (light absorption) properties have been studied in an oriented polycrystalline La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_{3} film which shows colossal magneto-resistance. The correlations between these properties are presented. A giant change in IR light transmission (more than a 1000-fold decrease) is observed on crossing the Curie temperature (about 270 K) from high to low temperature. Large changes in transmittance in a magnetic field were observed as well. The giant changes in transmittance and the large magneto-transmittance can be used for development of IR optoelectronic devices controlled by thermal and magnetic fields. We present a study of anisotropy of transport and magnetic properties in La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} (x \approx 1/3) film prepared by pulsed-laser deposition onto a LaAlO_{3} sunstrate. We found a non-monotonic dependence of magnetoresistance (MR) on magnetic field H for both H perpendicular and parallel to the film plane but perpendicular to the current. This rather complex behavior of MR manifests itself at low temperatures, far below the Curie temperature. Two main sources of MR anisotropy have been considered in the explanantion of the results: (1) the existence of preferential directions of magnetization (due to strains stemming from the lattice film-substrate mismatch or other reasons); (2) dependence of resistance on the angle between current and the magnetization, which is inherent in ferromagnets., Comment: 11 pages, 12 EPS figures

The effect of crystal lattice disorder on the conductivity and colossal magnetoresistance in La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} (x \approx 0.33) films has been examined. The lattice defects are introduced by irradiating the film with high-energy (\simeq 6 MeV) electrons with a maximal fluence of about 2\times 10^{17} cm^{-2}. This comparatively low dose of irradiation produces rather small radiation damage in the films. The number of displacements per atom (dpa) in the irradiated sample is about 10^{-5}. Nethertheless, this results in an appreciable increase in the film resistivity. The percentage of resistivity increase in the ferromagnetic metallic state (below the Curie tempetature T_{c}) was much greater than that observed in the insulating state (above T_{c}). At the same time irradiation has much less effect on T_{c} or on the magnitude of the colossal magnetoresistance. A sharp distinction between magnetoresistance (MR) behavior for the magnetic fields applied perpendicular (H_{perp}) and parallel (H_{par}) to the film plane is found in colossal-magnetoresistance film La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} (x \approx 3). At increasing of H_{perp} the MR is first negative (at H_{perp} < 4 kOe), then positive (4 kOe < H_{perp} < 12 kOe), and then negative again (H_{perp} > 12 kOe). At increasing of H_{par} the MR is positive below H_{par} \simeq 6 kOe and negative above it. In both cases the magnetic field was perpendicular to the current. The amorphous phase of Sn would have a superconducting transition temperature near 8 K, much higher than that of crystalline Sn with T(sub c) = 3.5 K. To obtain the amorphous phase, however, it is necessary to use a Sn alloy, usually Cu, and quench condense the alloy films onto a liquid He temperature substrate. Alloying with Cu reduces the superconducting transition temperature almost linearly with Cu concentration with an extrapolation of T(sub c) to zero for x = 0.85. Analysis of the tunneling characteristics between a normal metal electrode with an insulating barrier and superconducting amorphous Sn-Cu films provides detailed information on the changes in the electron-phonon coupling which determines T(sub c) in these alloys. The change from very strong electron-phonon coupling to weak-coupling with the increase in Cu content of amorphous Sn-Cu alloys for the range 0.08 is less than or equal to x is less than or equal to 0.41 is presented and discussed in terms of theories of electron-phonon coupling in disordered metals.
