Search

Stellar rotation, a key factor influencing stellar structure and evolution, also drives magnetic activity, which is manifested as spots or flares on stellar surface. Here, we present a collection of 18 443 rotating variables located toward the Galactic bulge, identified in the photometric database of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) project. These stars exhibit distinct magnetic activity, including starspots and flares. With this collection, we provide long-term, time-series photometry in Cousins I- and Johnson V-band obtained by OGLE since 1997, and basic observational parameters, i.e., equatorial coordinates, rotation periods, mean brightness, and brightness amplitudes in both bands. During the last 25 years, hundreds of binary stars and planets have been discovered towards the Galactic Bulge by microlensing surveys. Thanks to a new generation of large-sky surveys, it is now possible to regularly detect microlensing events across the entire sky. The OMEGA Key Projet at the Las Cumbres Observatory carries out automated follow-up observations of microlensing events alerted by these surveys with the aim of identifying and characterizing exoplanets as well as stellar remnants. In this study, we present the analysis of the binary lens event Gaia20bof. By automatically requesting additional observations, the OMEGA Key Project obtained dense time coverage of an anomaly near the peak of the event, allowing characterization of the lensing system. The observed anomaly in the lightcurve is due to a binary lens. However, several models can explain the observations. Spectroscopic observations indicate that the source is located at $\le2.0$ kpc, in agreement with the parallax measurements from Gaia. While the models are currently degenerate, future observations, especially the Gaia astrometric time series as well as high-resolution imaging, will provide extra constraints to distinguish between them., Comment: Accepted in AJ

Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. Identifying black holes is essential for comprehending the development of stars and uncovering novel principles of physics. Gravitational microlensing provides an exceptional opportunity to examine an undetectable population of black holes in the Milky Way. In particular, long-lasting events are likely to be associated with massive lenses, including black holes. We present an analysis of the Gaia18ajz microlensing event, reported by the Gaia Science Alerts system, which has exhibited a long timescale and features indicative of the annual microlensing parallax effect. Our objective is to estimate the parameters of the lens based on the best-fitting model. We utilized photometric data obtained from the Gaia satellite and terrestrial observatories to investigate a variety of microlensing models and calculate the most probable mass and distance to the lens, taking into consideration a Galactic model as a prior. Subsequently, weapplied a mass-brightness relation to evaluate the likelihood that the lens is a main sequence star. We also describe the DarkLensCode (DLC), an open-source routine which computes the distribution of probable lens mass, distance and luminosity employing the Galaxy priors on stellar density and velocity for microlensing events with detected microlensing parallax. We modelled Gaia18ajz event and found its two possible models with most likely Einstein timescale of $316^{+36}_{-30}$ days and $299^{+25}_{-22}$ days. Applying Galaxy priors for stellar density and motion, we calculated the most probable lens mass of $4.9^{+5.4}_{-2.3} M_\odot$ located at $1.14^{+0.75}_{-0.57}\,\text{kpc}$ or $11.1^{+10.3}_{-4.7} M_\odot$ located at $1.31^{+0.80}_{-0.60}\,\text{kpc}$. Our analysis of the blended light suggests that the lens is likely a dark remnant of stellar evolution, rather than a main sequence star.

Measurements of the microlensing optical depth and event rate toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) can be used to probe the distribution and mass function of compact objects in the direction toward that galaxy - in the Milky Way disk, the Milky Way dark matter halo, and the LMC itself. The previous measurements, based on small statistical samples of events, found that the optical depth is an order of magnitude smaller than that expected from the entire dark matter halo in the form of compact objects. However, these previous studies were not sensitive to long-duration events with Einstein timescales longer than 2.5-3 yr, which are expected from massive ($10-100\,M_{\odot}$) and intermediate-mass ($10^2-10^5\,M_{\odot}$) black holes. Such events would have been missed by the previous studies and would not have been taken into account in calculations of the optical depth. Here, we present the analysis of nearly 20-year-long photometric monitoring of 78.7 million stars in the LMC by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) from 2001 through 2020. We describe the observing setup, the construction of the 20-year OGLE dataset, the methods used for searching for microlensing events in the light-curve data, and the calculation of the event detection efficiency. In total, we find 16 microlensing events (thirteen using an automated pipeline and three with manual searches), all of which have timescales shorter than 1 yr. We use a sample of thirteen events to measure the microlensing optical depth toward the LMC $\tau=(0.121 \pm 0.037)\times 10^{-7}$ and the event rate $\Gamma=(0.74 \pm 0.25)\times 10^{-7}\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}\,\mathrm{star}^{-1}$. These numbers are consistent with lensing by stars in the Milky Way disk and the LMC itself, and they demonstrate that massive and intermediate-mass black holes cannot comprise a significant fraction of the dark matter., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJS

The gravitational wave detectors have unveiled a population of massive black holes that do not resemble those observed in the Milky Way. They may have formed due to the evolution of massive low-metallicity stars, dynamical interactions in dense stellar environments, or density fluctuations in the very early Universe (primordial black holes). If the latter hypothesis is correct, primordial black holes should comprise from several to 100% of dark matter to explain the black hole merger rates observed by gravitational wave detectors. If such black holes existed in the Milky Way dark matter halo, they would cause long-timescale gravitational microlensing events lasting years. Here, we present the results of the search for the long-timescale microlensing events among the light curves of 78.7 million stars located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) that were monitored for 20 years (2001-2020) by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) survey. We did not find any events with timescales longer than one year. The properties of all thirteen microlensing events with timescales shorter than one year detected by OGLE toward the LMC can be explained by astrophysical objects located either in the LMC itself or in the Milky Way disk, without the need to invoke dark matter in the form of compact objects. We find that compact objects in the mass range from $1.8 \times 10^{-4}\,M_{\odot}$ to $6.3\,M_{\odot}$ cannot compose more than 1% of dark matter, and compact objects in the mass range from $1.3 \times 10^{-5}\,M_{\odot}$ to $860\,M_{\odot}$ cannot make up more than 10% of dark matter. We present results of a search for transiting exoplanets in 10-yr long photometry with thousands of epochs taken in the direction of the Galactic bulge. This photometry was collected in the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV). Our search covered approx. 222 000 stars brighter than I = 15.5 mag. Selected transits were verified using a probabilistic method. The search resulted in 99 high-probability candidates for transiting exoplanets. The estimated distances to these targets are between 0.4 kpc and 5.5 kpc, which is a significantly wider range than for previous transit searches. The planets found are Jupiter-size, with the exception of one (named OGLE-TR-1003b) located in the hot Neptune desert. If the candidate is confirmed, it can be important for studies of highly irradiated intermediate-size planets. The existing long-term, high-cadence photometry of our candidates increases the chances of detecting transit timing variations at long timescales. Selected candidates will be observed by the future NASA flagship mission, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, in its search for Galactic bulge microlensing events, which will further enhance the photometric coverage of these stars., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. Eclipse timing variations (ETV) have been a successful tool for detecting circumbinary companions to eclipsing binaries (EB). While TESS and Kepler have been prolific for ETV searches, they sometimes can be limited by time and sky coverage which can be addressed by specialised ground-based ETV surveys. We present the initial results from the Solaris photometric survey which uses four 0.5m robotic telescopes in the southern hemisphere to look for circumbinary companions. We present the method of light curve extraction, detrending, and EB modelling using the observations from the Solaris network. Using these light curves we extract precise eclipse timing for 7 EB and look for companions using a Lomb-Scargle periodogram search. We find two possible periodic signals for the target GSC 08814-01026. With the system having strong activity, we check for the feasibility of orbital solutions at these two periods. We find that the 245 +/- 1 d period is due to an M-dwarf mass companion. This makes GSC 08814-01026 a candidate compact hierarchical triple system. We report discovering an exoplanet from following up a microlensing event alerted by Gaia. The event Gaia22dkv is toward a disk source rather than the traditional bulge microlensing fields. Our primary analysis yields a Jovian planet with M_p = 0.59^{+0.15}_{-0.05} M_J at a projected orbital separation r_perp = 1.4^{+0.8}_{-0.3} AU, and the host is a ~1.1 M_sun turnoff star at ~1.3 kpc. At r'~14, the host is far brighter than any previously discovered microlensing planet host, opening up the opportunity of testing the microlensing model with radial velocity (RV) observations. RV data can be used to measure the planet's orbital period and eccentricity, and they also enable searching for inner planets of the microlensing cold Jupiter, as expected from the ''inner-outer correlation'' inferred from Kepler and RV discoveries. Furthermore, we show that Gaia astrometric microlensing will not only allow precise measurements of its angular Einstein radius theta_E, but also directly measure the microlens parallax vector and unambiguously break a geometric light-curve degeneracy, leading to definitive characterization of the lens system., Comment: Accepted by AJ

We present the results of our analysis of Gaia19dke, an extraordinary microlensing event in the Cygnus constellation that was first spotted by the {\gaia} satellite. This event featured a strong microlensing parallax effect, which resulted in multiple peaks in the light curve. We conducted extensive photometric, spectroscopic, and high-resolution imaging follow-up observations to determine the mass and the nature of the invisible lensing object. Using the Milky Way priors on density and velocity of lenses, we found that the dark lens is likely to be located at a distance of $D_L =(3.05^{+4.10}_{-2.42})$kpc, and has a mass of $M_L =(0.51^{+3.07}_{-0.40}) M_\odot$. We present 18 years of OGLE photometry together with spectra obtained over 12 years, revealing that the early Oe star AzV 493 shows strong photometric (Delta I < 1.2 mag) and spectroscopic variability with a dominant, 14.6-year pattern and ~40-day oscillations. We estimate stellar parameters T_eff = 42000 K, log L/L_sun = 5.83 +/- 0.15, M/M_sun = 50 +/- 9, and vsini = 370 +/- 40 km/s. Direct spectroscopic evidence shows episodes of both gas ejection and infall. There is no X-ray detection, and it is likely a runaway star. AzV 493 may have an unseen companion on a highly eccentric (e > 0.93) orbit. We propose that close interaction at periastron excites ejection of the decretion disk, whose variable emission-line spectrum suggests separate inner and outer components, with an optically thick outer component obscuring both the stellar photosphere and the emission-line spectrum of the inner disk at early phases in the photometric cycle. It is plausible that AzV 493's mass and rotation have been enhanced by binary interaction followed by the core-collapse supernova explosion of the companion, which now could be either a black hole or neutron star. This system in the Small Magellanic Cloud can potentially shed light on OBe decretion disk formation and evolution, massive binary evolution, and compact binary progenitors., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, 1 table. We report the classification of 24 puzzling short-period variable stars located in OGLE-IV Galactic bulge fields. The stars are low-amplitude (<0.05 mag) multi-periodic objects with dominant periods between 22 and 54 min whose type could not have been unambiguously established based on photometry only. A low-resolution spectroscopic follow-up has shown that all the objects are main sequence A/F-type stars. Thus, all the variables are delta Sct-type pulsators. The effect of the nutation angle on the flow inside a precessing cylinder is experimentally explored and compared with numerical simulations. The focus is laid on the typical breakdown of the directly forced m=1 Kelvin mode for increasing precession ratio (Poincar\'e number), and the accompanying transition between a laminar and turbulent flow. Compared to the reference case with a 90{\deg} nutation angle, prograde rotation leads to an earlier breakdown, while in the retrograde case the forced mode continues to exist also for higher Poincar\'e numbers. Depending largely on the occurrence and intensity of an axisymmetric double-roll mode, a kinematic dynamo study reveals a sensitive dependency of the self-excitation condition on the nutation angle and the Poincar\'e number. Optimal dynamo conditions are found for 90{\deg} angle which, however, might shift to slightly retrograde precession for higher Reynolds numbers., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

We present the photometric analysis of Gaia19bld, a high-magnification ($A\approx60$) microlensing event located in the southern Galactic plane, which exhibited finite source and microlensing parallax effects. Due to a prompt detection by the Gaia satellite and the very high brightness of $I = 9.05~$mag at the peak, it was possible to collect a complete and unique set of multi-channel follow-up observations, which allowed us to determine all parameters vital for the characterisation of the lens and the source in the microlensing event. Gaia19bld was discovered by the Gaia satellite and was subsequently intensively followed up with a network of ground-based observatories and the Spitzer Space Telescope. We collected multiple high-resolution spectra with Very Large Telescope (VLT)/X-Shooter to characterise the source star. The event was also observed with VLT Interferometer (VLTI)/PIONIER during the peak. Here we focus on the photometric observations and model the light curve composed of data from Gaia, Spitzer, and multiple optical, ground-based observatories. We find the best-fitting solution with parallax and finite source effects. We derived the limit on the luminosity of the lens based on the blended light model and spectroscopic distance. We compute the mass of the lens to be $1.13 \pm 0.03~M_{\odot}$ and derive its distance to be $5.52^{+0.35}_{-0.64}~\mathrm{kpc}$. The lens is likely a main sequence star, however its true nature has yet to be verified by future high-resolution observations. Our results are consistent with interferometric measurements of the angular Einstein radius, emphasising that interferometry can be a new channel for determining the masses of objects that would otherwise remain undetectable, including stellar-mass black holes., Comment: accepted to Astronomy&Astrophysics

We present results of the analysis of light and radial velocity (RV) curves of eight detached eclipsing binaries observed by the All-Sky Automated Survey, which we have followed up with high-resolution spectroscopy, and were later observed by the $Kepler$ satellite as part of the $K2$ mission. The RV measurements came from spectra obtained with OAO-188/HIDES, MPG-2.2m/FEROS, SMARTS 1.5m/CHIRON, Euler/CORALIE, ESO-3.6m/HARPS, and OHP-1.93/ELODIE instruments. The $K2$ time-series photometry was analyzed with the JKTEBOP code, with out-of-eclipse modulations of different origin taken into account. Individual component spectra were retrieved with the FD3 code, and analyzed with the code iSpec in order to determine effective temperatures and metallicities. Absolute values of masses, radii, and other stellar parameters are calculated, as well as ages, found through isochrone fitting. For five systems such analysis has been done for the first time. The presented sample consists of a variety of stars, from low-mass dwarfs, through G and F-type Main Sequence objects, to evolved active sub-giants, one of which is found to be crossing the Hertzsprung gap. Eccentric ellipsoidal variables (aka heartbeat stars) is a class of eccentric binaries in which proximity effects, tidal distortion due to time-dependent tidal potential in particular, lead to measurable photometric variability close to the periastron passage. The varying tidal potential may also give rise to tidally-excited oscillations (TEOs). TEOs may play an important role in the dynamical evolution of massive eccentric systems. Our study is aimed at the detection of TEOs and characterisation of the long-term behaviour of their amplitudes and frequencies in the extreme-amplitude heartbeat star MACHO 80.7443.1718, consisting of a blue supergiant and a late O-type massive dwarf. We use two seasons of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observations of the target to obtain new 30-min cadence photometry by means of the difference image analysis of TESS full-frame images. In order to extend the analysis to longer time scales, we supplement the TESS data with 30-years long ground-based photometry of the target. We confirm the detection of the known $n=23$, 25, and 41 TEOs and announce the detection of two new TEOs, with $n=24$ and 230, in the photometry of MACHO 80.7443.1718. Amplitudes of all TEOs were found to vary on a time scale of years or months. For $n=25$ TEO amplitude and frequency changes are related, which may indicate that the main cause of the amplitude drop of this TEO in TESS observations is the change of its frequency and increase of detuning parameter. The light curve of the $n=230$ TEO is strongly non-sinusoidal. Its high frequency may indicate that the oscillation is a strange mode. We also find that the orbital period of the system decreases at the rate of about 11 s(yr)$^{-1}$, which can be explained by a significant mass loss or mass transfer in the system with a possible contribution from tidal dissipation., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Results of an analysis of the BRITE-Constellation and SMEI photometry and radial-velocity observations, archival and new, of two single-lined spectroscopic binary systems $\nu$ Centauri and $\gamma$ Lupi are reported. In the case of $\gamma$ Lup AB, a visual binary, an examination of the light-time effect shows that component A is the spectroscopic binary. Both $\nu$ Cen and $\gamma$ Lup exhibit light variations with the orbital period. The variations are caused by the reflection effect, i.e. heating of the secondary's hemisphere by the early-B main sequence (MS) primary component's light. The modelling of the light curves augmented with the fundamental parameters of the primary components obtained from the literature photometric data and Hipparcos parallaxes, shows that the secondary components are pre-MS stars, in the process of contracting onto the MS. $\nu$ Cen and $\gamma$ Lup A are thus found to be non-eclipsing counterparts of the B2 IV eclipsing binary (and a $\beta$ Cephei variable) 16 (EN) Lac, the B5 IV eclipsing binary (and an SPB variable) $\mu$ Eri, and the recently discovered LMC nascent eclipsing binaries., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, published in MNRAS

Long secondary periods (LSPs), observed in a third of pulsating red giant stars, are the only unexplained type of large-amplitude stellar variability known at this time. Here we show that this phenomenon is a manifestation of a substellar or stellar companion orbiting the red giant star. Our investigation is based on a sample of about 16,000 well-defined LSP variables detected in the long-term OGLE photometric database of the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, combined with the mid-infrared data extracted from the NEOWISE-R archive. From this collection, we selected about 700 objects with stable, large-amplitude, well-sampled infrared light curves and found that about half of them exhibit secondary eclipses, thus presenting an important piece of evidence that the physical mechanism responsible for LSPs is binarity. Namely, the LSP light changes are due to the presence of a dusty cloud orbiting the red giant together with the companion and obscuring the star once per orbit. The secondary eclipses, visible only in the infrared wavelength, occur when the cloud is hidden behind the giant. In this scenario, the low-mass companion is a former planet that has accreted a significant amount of mass from the envelope of its host star and grown into a brown dwarf., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We present the results of a spectroscopic campaign on eclipsing binaries with long orbital period (P = 20 - 75 d) carried out with the CHIRON spectrograph. Physical and orbital solutions for seven systems were derived from the V-band, and I-band ASAS, WASP, and TESS photometry, while radial velocities were calculated from high quality optical spectra using a two-dimensional cross-correlation technique. The atmospheric parameters of the stars have been determined from the separated spectra. Most of our targets are composed of evolved stars (sub-giants or red giants) but two systems show components in different phases of evolution and one possible merger. For four binaries the masses and radii of the components were obtained with precision better than 3%. We present a new analysis of the multiple star V1200 Centauri based on the most recent observations for this system. We used the photometric observations from the Solaris network and the TESS telescope, combined with the new radial velocities from the CHIRON spectrograph and those published in the literature. We confirmed that V1200 Cen consists of a 2.5-day eclipsing binary orbited by a third body. We derived the parameters of the eclipsing components, which are $M_{Aa} = 1.393\pm0.018\,$M$_\odot$, $R_{Aa} = 1.407\pm0.014\,$R$_\odot$ and $T_{{\rm eff},Aa} = 6\,588\pm58\,$K for the primary, and $M_{Ab} = 0.863\,3\pm0.008\,1\,$M$_\odot$, $R_{Ab} = 1.154\pm0.014\,$R$_\odot$ and $T_{{\rm eff},Ab} = 4\,475\pm68\,$K for the secondary. Regarding the third body, we obtained significantly different results than previously published. The period of the outer orbit is found to be 180.4 days, implying a minimum mass $M_B = 0.871\pm0.020\,$M$_\odot$. Thus, we argue that V1200 Cen is a quadruple system with a secondary pair composed of two low-mass stars. Finally, we determined the ages of each eclipsing component using two evolution codes, namely MESA and CESTAM. We obtained ages of 16-18.5$\,$Myr and 5.5-7$\,$Myr for the primary and the secondary, respectively. In particular, the secondary appears larger and hotter than predicted at the age of the primary. We concluded that dynamical and tidal interactions occurring in multiples may alter the stellar properties and explain the apparent non-coevality of V1200 Centauri., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 17 pages, 7 tables and 11 figures

We present the latest results of our spectroscopic observations and refined modelling of a sample of detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs), selected from the $Kepler$} Eclipsing Binary Catalog, that are also double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2). New high resolution spectra obtained with the HIDES spectrograph, attached to the 1.88-m telescope of the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory supplemented the previous observations, allowing to improve physical parameters of some systems, and characterize three previously omitted. All the obtained radial velocities (RVs) were combined with $Kepler$ photometry, in order to derive a full set of orbital and physical parameters. Ten out of eleven SB2s have their component spectra tomographically disentangled, and spectral analysis was performed with iSpec, in order to derive effective temperatures of components and metallicities of the systems. By comparing our results with theoretical models, we assess the age and evolutionary status of the studied objects. We find a good match to all but one systems. We have derived distances from thus determined parameters, and compare them with those from the $Gaia$ Data Release 2. We have obtained high-resolution spectra of four eclipsing binary systems (FM Leo, NN Del, V963 Cen and AI Phe) with the view to gaining insight into the relative orientation of their stellar spin axes and orbital axes. The so called Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect, i.e. the fact that the broadening and the amount of blue- or redshift in the spectra during an eclipse depend on the tilt of the spin axis of the background star, has the potential of reconciling observations and theoretical models if such a tilt is found. We analyse the RM effect by disentangling the spectra, removing the front component and measuring the remaining, distorted lines with a broadening function (BF) obtained from single value decomposition (SVD), weighting by the intensity centre of the BF in the eclipse. All but one of our objects show no significant misalignment, suggesting that aligned systems are dominant. We provide stellar as well as orbital parameters for our systems. With five measured spin-orbit angles we significantly increase (from 9 to 14) the number of stars for which it has been measured. The spin-orbit angle $\beta$ calculated for AI Phe's secondary component shows a misalignment of 87$\pm$17 degrees. NN Del, with a large separation of components and a long dynamical timescale for circularisation and synchronisation, is an example of a close to primordial spin-orbit angle measurement., Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures

Time-series photometry from space in the ultraviolet can be presently done with only a few platforms, none of which is able to provide wide-field long-term high-cadence photometry. We present a concept of UVSat, a twin space telescope which will be capable to perform this kind of photometry, filling an observational niche. The satellite will host two telescopes, one for observations in the ultraviolet, the other for observations in the optical band. Using BRITE photometric data for several close binary systems we address the problem of damping pulsations in close binary systems due to proximity effects. Because of small number statistics, no firm conclusion is given, but we find pulsations in three relatively close binaries. We present the design and commissioning of Project Solaris, a global network of autonomous observatories. Solaris is a Polish scientific undertaking aimed at the detection and characterization of circumbinary exoplanets and eclipsing binary stars. To accomplish this, a network of four fully autonomous observatories has been deployed in the Southern Hemisphere: Solaris-1 and Solaris-2 in the South African Astronomical Observatory in South Africa; Solaris-3 in Siding Spring Observatory in Australia; and Solaris-4 in Complejo Astronomico El Leoncito in Argentina. The four stations are nearly identical and are equipped with 0.5-m Ritchey-Cr\'etien (f/15) or Cassegrain (f/9, Solaris-3) optics and high-grade 2 K x 2 K CCD cameras with Johnson and Sloan filter sets. We present the design and implementation of low-level security; data logging and notification systems; weather monitoring components; all-sky vision system, surveillance system; and distributed temperature and humidity sensors. We describe dedicated grounding and lighting protection system design and robust fiber data transfer interfaces in electrically demanding conditions. We discuss the outcomes of our design, as well as the resulting software engineering requirements. We describe our system's engineering approach to achieve the required level of autonomy, the architecture of the custom high-level industry-grade software that has been designed and implemented specifically for the use of the network. We present the actual status of the project and first photometric results; these include data and models of already studied systems for benchmarking purposes (Wasp-4b, Wasp-64b, and Wasp-98b transits, PG 1663-018, an eclipsing binary with a pulsator) as well J024946-3825.6, an interesting low-mass binary system for which a complete model is provided for the first time.

We present spectroscopic and photometric solutions for three spotted systems with red giant components. Absolute physical and orbital parameters for these double-lined detached eclipsing binary stars are presented for the first time. These were derived from the V-, and I-band ASAS and WASP photometry, and new radial velocities calculated from high quality optical spectra we obtained with a wide range of spectrographs and using the two-dimensional cross-correlation technique (TODCOR). All of the investigated systems (ASAS J184949-1518.7, BQ Aqr, and V1207 Cen) show the differential evolutionary phase of their components consisting of a main sequence star or a subgiant and a red giant, and thus constitute very informative objects in terms of testing stellar evolution models. Additionally, the systems show significant chromospheric activity of both components. They can be also classified as classical RS CVn-type stars. Besides the standard analysis of radial velocities and photometry, we applied spectral disentangling to obtain separate spectra for both components of each analysed system which allowed for a more detailed spectroscopic study. We also compared the properties of red giant stars in binaries that show spots, with those that do not, and found that the activity phenomenon is substantially suppressed for stars with Rossby number higher than $\sim$1 and radii larger than $\sim$20 R$_\odot$., Comment: Published in MNRAS, 18 pages, 11 figures

We present results of our spectroscopic observations of nine detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs), selected from the $Kepler$ Eclipsing Binary Catalog, that only show one set of spectral lines. Radial velocities (RVs) were calculated from the high resolution spectra obtained with the HIDES instrument, attached to the 1.88-m telescope at the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, and from the public APOGEE archive. In our sample we found five single-lined binaries, with one component dominating the spectrum. The orbital and light curve solutions were found for four of them, and compared with isochrones, in order to estimate absolute physical parameters and evolutionary status of the components. For the fifth case we only update the orbital parameters, and estimate the properties of the unseen star. Two other systems show orbital motion with a period known from the eclipse timing variations (ETVs). For these we obtained parameters of outer orbits, by translating the ETVs to RVs of the centre of mass of the eclipsing binary, and combining with the RVs of the outer star. Of the two remaining ones, one is most likely a blend of a faint background DEB with a bright foreground star, which lines we see in the spectra, and the last case is possibly a quadruple bearing a sub-stellar mass object. Where possible, we compare our results with literature, especially with results from asteroseismology. For more than three years now we have been conducting a spectroscopic survey of detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) from the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) database. Thousands of high-resolution spectra of over 300 systems were secured, and used for radial velocity measurements and spectral analysis. We present the orbital and physical parameters of the detached eclipsing binary V1200~Centauri (ASAS~J135218-3837.3) from the analysis of spectroscopic observations and light curves from the \textit{All Sky Automated Survey} (ASAS) and SuperWASP database. The radial velocities were computed from the high-resolution spectra obtained with the OUC 50-cm telescope and PUCHEROS spectrograph and with 1.2m Euler telescope and CORALIE spectrograph using the cross-correlation technique \textsc{todcor}. We found that the absolute parameters of the system are $M_1= 1.394\pm 0.030$ M$_\odot$, $M_2= 0.866\pm 0.015$ M$_\odot$, $R_1= 1.39\pm 0.15$ R$_\odot$, $R_2= 1.10\pm 0.25$ R$_\odot$. We investigated the evolutionary status and kinematics of the binary and our results indicate that V1200~Centauri is likely a member of the Hyades moving group, but the largely inflated secondary's radius may suggest that the system may be even younger, around 30 Myr. We also found that the eclipsing pair is orbited by another, stellar-mass object on a 351-day orbit, which is unusually short for hierarchical triples. We present the first full orbital and physical analysis of HD 187669, recognized by the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) as the eclipsing binary ASAS J195222-3233.7. We combined multi-band photometry from the ASAS and SuperWASP public archives and 0.41-m PROMPT robotic telescopes with our high-precision radial velocities from the HARPS spectrograph. Two different approaches were used for the analysis: 1) fitting to all data simultaneously with the WD code, and 2) analysing each light curve (with JKTEBOP) and RVs separately and combining the partial results at the end. This system also shows a total primary (deeper) eclipse, lasting for about 6 days. A spectrum obtained during this eclipse was used to perform atmospheric analysis with the MOOG and SME codes in order to constrain physical parameters of the secondary. We found that ASAS J195222-3233.7 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary composed of two evolved, late-type giants, with masses of $M_1 = 1.504\pm0.004$ and $M_2=1.505\pm0.004$ M$_\odot$, and radii of $R_1 = 11.33\pm0.28$ and $R_2=22.62\pm0.50$ R$_\odot$, slightly less metal abundant than the Sun, on a $P=88.39$ d orbit. Its properties are well reproduced by a 2.38 Gyr isochrone, and thanks to the metallicity estimation from the totality spectrum and high precision in masses, it was possible to constrain the age down to 0.1 Gyr. We evaluate a pre-production BACHES \'{e}chelle spectrograph in terms of its usefulness for radial velocity surveys of binary stars with small telescopes in a remote and autonomous. We use the Solaris-4 observatory located in Casleo, Argentina, that is part of a global network of autonomous observatories as the test-bed for the instrument. The setup is designed in such a way that spectroscopy and photometry can be carried out using the same telescope without the need to mechanically modify the imaging train. We observe single spectroscopic standard stars as well as binary stars up to 9.75 mag. We present results of mechanical tests of the instruments and spectroscopic observations carried out between Nov 26th and Dec 8th 2013. We conclude that BACHES is a very compact and capable spectrograph well suited for remote and autonomous operation. Coupled to a 0.5-m telescope it is capable of obtaining spectra of 10 mag targets with a SNR of 20 for 30-minute exposures. This is a very good result considering the price and size of the instrument. We present the results of the combined photometric and spectroscopic analysis of a bright (V=9.14), nearby (d=31 pc), late-type detached eclipsing binary AK Fornacis. This P=3.981 d system has not been previously recognised as a double-lined spectroscopic binary, and this is the first full physical model of this unique target. With the FEROS, CORALIE and HARPS spectrographs we collected a number of high-resolution spectra in order to calculate radial velocities of both components of the binary. Measurements were done with our own disentangling procedure and the TODCOR technique, and were later combined with the photometry from the ASAS and SuperWASP archives. We also performed an atmospheric analysis of the component spectra with the Spectroscopy Made Easy (SME) package. Our analysis shows that AK For consists of two active, cool dwarfs having masses of $M_1=0.6958 \pm 0.0010$ and $M_2=0.6355 \pm 0.0007$ M$_\odot$ and radii of $R_1=0.687 \pm 0.020$ and $R_2=0.609 \pm 0.016$ R$_\odot$, slightly less metal abundant than the Sun. Parameters of both components are well reproduced by the models. AK For is the brightest system among the known eclipsing binaries with K or M type stars. Its orbital period is one of the longest and rotational velocities one of the lowest, which allows us to obtain very precise radial velocity measurements. The precision in physical parameters we obtained places AK For among the binaries with the best mass measurements in the literature. It also fills the gap in our knowledge of stars in the range of 0.5-0.8 M$_\odot$, and between short and long-period systems. We present absolute physical and orbital parameters for three double-lined detached eclipsing binary systems from the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) catalogue with subgiant and giant components. These parameters were derived from archival V-band ASAS photometry and new radial velocities. The radial velocities were calculated from high quality optical spectra we obtained with the 8.2 m Subaru/HDS, ESO 3.6 m/HARPS, 1.9 m Radcliffe/GIRAFFE, CTIO 1.5 m/CHIRON, and 1.2 m Euler/CORALIE using the two-dimensional cross-correlation technique (TODCOR) and synthetic template spectra chosen for every system separately as references. The physical and orbital parameters of the systems were derived with the PHOEBE and JKTEBOP codes. We checked the evolutionary status of the systems with several sets of isochrones and determined distances for each system. The derived uncertainties for individual masses of ASAS J010538-8003.7, ASAS J182510-2435.5, and V1980 Sgr components vary from 0.7% to 3.6% while the radii are in the range 1% to 24%. We present the orbital and physical parameters of a newly discovered low-mass detached eclipsing binary from the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) database: ASAS J011328-3821.1 A - a member of a visual binary system with the secondary component separated by about 1.4 seconds of arc. The radial velocities were calculated from the high-resolution spectra obtained with the 1.9-m Radcliffe/GIRAFFE, 3.9-m AAT/UCLES and 3.0-m Shane/HamSpec telescopes/spectrographs on the basis of the TODCOR technique and positions of H_alpha emission lines. For the analysis we used V and I band photometry obtained with the 1.0-m Elizabeth and robotic 0.41-m PROMPT telescopes, supplemented with the publicly available ASAS light curve of the system. We found that ASAS J011328-3821.1 A is composed of two late-type dwarfs having masses of M_1 = 0.612 +/- 0.030 M_sun, M_2 = 0.445 +/- 0.019 M_sun and radii of R_1 = 0.596 +/- 0.020 R_sun, R_2 = 0.445 +/- 0.024 R_sun, both show a substantial level of activity, which manifests in strong H_alpha and H_beta emission and the presence of cool spots. The influence of the third light on the eclipsing pair properties was also evaluated and the photometric properties of the component B were derived. Comparison with several popular stellar evolution models shows that the system is on its main sequence evolution stage and probably is more metal rich than the Sun. We present the results of our spectroscopic and photometric analysis of two newly discovered low-mass detached eclipsing binaries found in the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) catalogue: ASAS J093814-0104.4 and ASAS J212954-5620.1. Using the GIRAFFE instrument on the 1.9-m Radcliffe telescope at SAAO and the UCLES spectrograph on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope, we obtained high-resolution spectra of both objects and derived their radial velocities (RVs) at various orbital phases. The RVs of both objects were measured with the TODCOR technique using synthetic template spectra as references. We also obtained V and I band photometry using the 1.0-m Elizabeth telescope at SAAO and the 0.4-m PROMPT instruments located at the CTIO. The orbital and physical parameters of the systems were derived with PHOEBE and JKTEBOP codes. We compared our results with several sets of widely-used isochrones. Our multi-epoch photometric observations demonstrate that both objects show significant out-of-eclipse modulations, which vary in time. We believe that this effect is caused by stellar spots, which evolve on time scales of tens of days. For this reason, we constructed our models on the basis of photometric observations spanning short time scales (less than a month). Our modeling indicates that (1) ASAS-09 is a main sequence active system with nearly-twin components with masses of M1 = 0.771(33) Msun, M2 = 0.768(21) Msun and radii of R1 = 0.772(12) Rsun and R2 = 0.769(13) Rsun. (2) ASAS-21 is a main sequence active binary with component masses of M1 = 0.833(17) Msun, M2 = 0.703(13) Msun and radii of R1 = 0.845(12) Rsun and R2 = 0.718(17) Rsun. Both systems confirm the characteristic of active low-mass stars, for which the observed radii are larger and the temperatures lower than predicted by evolutionary models. First spectroscopic and new photometric observations of the eclipsing binary FM Leo are presented. The main aims were to determine orbital and stellar parameters of two components and their evolutionary stage. First spectroscopic observations of the system were obtained with DDO and PST spectrographs. The results of the orbital solution from radial velocity curves are combined with those derived from the light-curve analysis (ASAS-3 photometry and supplementary observations of eclipses with 1 m and 0.35 m telescopes) to derive orbital and stellar parameters. JKTEBOP, Wilson-Devinney binary modelling codes and a two-dimensional cross-correlation (TODCOR) method were applied for the analysis. We find the masses to be M_1 = 1.318 $\pm$ 0.007 and M_2 = 1.287 $\pm$ 0.007 M_sun, the radii to be R_1 = 1.648 $\pm$ 0.043 and R_2 = 1.511 $\pm$ 0.049 R_sun for primary and secondary stars, respectively. The evolutionary stage of the system is briefly discussed by comparing physical parameters with current stellar evolution models. We derive the absolute physical and orbital parameters for a sample of 18 detached eclipsing binaries from the \emph{All Sky Automated Survey} (ASAS) database based on the available photometry and our own radial velocity measurements. The radial velocities (RVs) are computed using spectra we collected with the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope and its \emph{University College London Echelle Spectrograph} and the 1.9-m SAAO Radcliffe telescope and its \emph{Grating Instrument for Radiation Analysis with a Fibre Fed Echelle}. In order to obtain as precise RVs as possible, most of the systems were observed with an iodine cell available at the AAT/UCLES and/or analyzed using the two-dimensional cross-correlation technique (TODCOR). The RVs were measured with TODCOR using synthetic template spectra as references. However, for two objects we used our own approach to the tomographic disentangling of the binary spectra to provide observed template spectra for the RV measurements and to improve the RV precision even more. For one of these binaries, AI Phe, we were able to the obtain an orbital solution with an RV $rms$ of 62 and 24 m s$^{-1}$ for the primary and secondary respectively. For this system, the precision in $M \sin^3{i}$ is 0.08%. For the analysis, we used the photometry available in the ASAS database. We combined the RV and light curves using PHOEBE and JKTEBOP codes to obtain the absolute physical parameters of the systems. Having precise RVs we were able to reach $\sim$0.2 % precision (or better) in masses in several cases but in radii, due to the limited precision of the ASAS photometry, we were able to reach a precision of only 1% in one case and 3-5 % in a few more cases.
