4. Alternative management strategies for carob moth [Ectomyelois ceratoniaeZeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)] in pomegranate orchards

Abstract

Carob moth [Ectomyelois ceratoniaeZeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)] is a significant pest infesting pomegranate orchards. The management of the pest is mainly reliant on pesticides; however, their adverse impacts necessitate alternative management strategies. Therefore, this study determined the efficacy of kaolin (Ka), diatomaceous earth (DE—‘Turco 00’), and calcium polysulfide (CP) in suppressing carob moth infestation in pomegranate. Three doses of DE (i.e., 2, 4, and 6 kg), Ka (3, 5, and 7 kg), and CP (0.5, 1, and 1.5 L) per 100-L water, positive control (emamectin benzoate), and untreated negative control were included in the study. The doses of the tested materials were regarded as low, medium, and high. Data relating to fruit infestation rate, efficacy of the treatments in suppressing carob moth infestation and economic returns were collected. The low, medium, and high doses of DE resulted in 7.8%, 6.8%, and 4.3% fruit infestation rate, respectively. Similarly, low, medium, and high doses of Ka resulted in 10.5%, 9.5%, and 8.8% infestation rate, respectively. In the same way, 21.5%, 13.3%, and 9.5% infestation rate was noted for low, medium, and high doses of CP, respectively. The positive and negative control resulted in 9.5% and 32.5% infestation rate, respectively. The efficacy of low, medium, and high doses was 75.80%, 78.72%, and 87.23, respectively for DE, 67.28%, 70.42%, and 72.65% for Ka, 33.64%, 58.11%, and 70.20% for CP, and 70.42% for positive control. The DE, Ka, and CP applied at all doses resulted in low infestation rates of carob moth compared to negative control. Similarly, the application of all doses of DE, Ka, and CP significantly improved net economic returns. Overall, all doses of DE and high dose of Ka proved more effective than positive control in lowering carob moth infestation. Economic analysis revealed that all doses of DE resulted in higher net economic returns compared to all other treatments included in the study. Hence, it is recommended to use high doses of DE to reduce infestation rate of carob moth and improve net economic returns of pomegranate.

Abstract

Anthocoris minkiDohrn (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) is used as a biological control agent of various agricultural pests. This study determined the effect of different egg laying materials, i.e., faba bean, common bean, and pea on population parameters of A. minkiusing age-stage, two-sex life table. The longest (34.45 d) and the shortest (21.32 d) adult longevity was noted on common bean and pea, respectively. Likewise, the highest (92%) and the lowest (69%) preadult survival rate was recorded on faba bean and pea, respectively. The highest fecundity (93.74 eggs/female) was noted on faba bean followed by common bean (43.95 eggs/female) and pea (48.69 eggs/female). Oviposition period remained unaffected, while higher oviposition days (22 d) were noted on faba bean compared with common bean (10 d) and pea (14 d). The shortest and the longest adult pre-oviposition period and total pre-ovipositional period were calculated for common bean and pea, respectively. The highest intrinsic rate of increase (r) (0.1159 d−1) and finite rate of increase (λ) (1.1229 d−1) were noted on common bean, while the lowest (r= 0.0939 d−1; λ= 1.0985 d−1) were noted on pea. Paired bootstrap analyses indicated that the highest net reproductive rate (R0) (43.12 offspring) was recorded on faba bean. Egg hatching rate significantly differed among plants (P < 0.01) and it was 80.50%, 71.10%, and 38.90% on common bean, faba bean and pea, respectively. It is concluded that faba bean would be the most suitable host for mass rearing of A. minki, while pea proved unsuitable.

Abstract

Tarımsal zararlılarla mücadelede birçok yöntem kullanılmaktadır. Bu yöntemlerden Biyolojik Mücadele; çevreye en duyarlı olanıdır. Biyolojik mücadelede yararlanılan predatörlerden biri de Anthocoris minki Dohrn (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) dir. Bu çalışma, A. minki' nin kitle halinde ekonomik, hızlı ve verimli bir şekilde üretilebilmesi için uygun yumurtlama materyalinin belirlenmesi amacıyla laboratuvar şartlarında yürütülmüştür. Çalışmanın materyallerini, besin olarak Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) (Un güvesi) yumurtaları, bu yumurtalarla beslenen avcı böcek A. minki ile Leguminosae (Fabaceae) familyasına ait önemli baklagil türleri olan fasulye (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), bakla (Vicia faba L.) ve bezelye (Pisum sativum L.) bitkilerinin baklaları oluşturmuştur. A. minki' nin bu yumurtlama materyalleri üzerinde bıraktıkları yumurtaların sayısı, yumurtaların açılma oranları, canlılık oranları, ergin olma oranı, ömür uzunlukları, üreme oranı, preovipozisyon, ovipozisyon ve postovipozisyon süreleri belirlenmiştir. Araştırma neticesinde fasulye, bakla ve bezelye için preovipozisyon süreleri sırasıyla 5.75, 8.36, 7.31; ovipozisyon süreleri 7.83, 24.18, 19.63; Postovipozisyon süreleri 7.83, 9.73 ve 5.38 olarak bulunmuştur. Toplam yumurta sayıları fasulye, bakla ve bezelye için sırasıyla 430, 964 ve 799 olup bu yumurtaların açılma oranları yüzde (%) olarak sırasıyla 80.5, 71.1 ve 39.0 olarak bulunmuştur. Sonuç itibariyle; A. minki' nin kitle üretiminde bezelyenin yumurtlama materyali olarak kullanılmasının ekonomik ve verimli olmayacağı; ayrıca bazı parametrelerde istatistiksel fark bulunmasa da 3 yumurtlama materyali içinde bakla nın A. minki' nin kitle üretimi için ekonomik ve verimli yumurtlama materyali olduğu belirlenmiştir. There are many methods to control agricultural pests. Biological control is the most susceptible to the environment in these methods. One of the predators, which is used in the biological control, is Anthocoris minki Dohrn (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae). This study has been carried out under laboratory conditions in order to determine suitable spawning material for producing A. minki in mass in an economical, fast and efficient manner. The materials of the study were eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) as prey Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), faba bean (Vicia faba L.) and peas (Pisum sativum L.) plants which are important kind of leguminosae (Fabaceae) family. It was determined The number of eggs, the rate of egg opening, viability rates, maturing rate, lengths of life, reproductive rate, preoviposition, oviposition and postoviposition which was laid on these spawning materials by A. minki. As a result of the research it was found that preoviposition times are 5.75, 8.36, 7.31; oviposition times are 7.83, 24.18, 19.63 and postoviposition times are 7.83, 9.73 ve 5.38 days for the bean, faba bean and peas respectively. The total egg counts for beans, faba beans and peas were 430, 964 and 799, respectively, and the percentages of these eggs were found as 80.5, 71.1 and 39.0 percent, respectively. Consicuently; A. minki will not be economical and efficient to use peas as spawning material in mass production; although there is no statistical difference in some parameters, It has been determined that faba bean is an economic and efficient spawning material in 3 spawning materials for mass production A. minki. 39

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Harran ovası koşullarında bezelye bitkisinde su ve verim komponetleri arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemek amacıyla 3 yinelemeli olacak şekilde yürütülmüştür. Araştırma konuları % 0 (I0), % 25 (I25), % 50 (I50), % 75 (I75) ve % 100 (I100) olarak belirlenmiş ve sulamalar damla sulama sistemiyle yapılmıştır. Deneme sonucunda sulama suyu miktarında meydana gelen artışlara paralel olarak ölcülen parametrelerde de genel olarak doğrusal bir artış olduğu belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular suyun verim ve verim komponentleri üzerinde istatistiksel olarak çok önemli bir tarımsal uygulama olduğunu göstermiştir. Bezelye üretiminde optimum verim için Harran ovası koşullarında sulamanın gerekli bir tarımsal uygulama olduğu belirlenmiştir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Bezelye, Sulama, Verim This study was conducted at Harran plain to determine the effect of irrigitation rates on green pea yield and yield components, treatments included 0 % (I0), 25 % (I25), 50 % (I50), 75 % (I75) and 100% (I100 full irrigated treatment) of full irrigitation treatments, treatments repicated 3 times. The study results indicated that with increased irrigation amounts yield and yield components of green pea also increased. The relationship between irrigation amount and yield was better explaıned wıth lınear equatıon.
