Abstract Neurodegenerative disorders are complex, progressive, and life-threatening. They cause mortality and disability for millions of people worldwide. Appropriate treatment for neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) is still clinically lacking due to the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Developing an effective transport system that can cross the BBB and enhance the therapeutic effect of neuroprotective agents has been a major challenge for NDs. Exosomes are endogenous nano-sized vesicles that naturally carry biomolecular cargoes. Many studies have indicated that exosome content, particularly microRNAs (miRNAs), possess biological activities by targeting several signaling pathways involved in apoptosis, inflammation, autophagy, and oxidative stress. Exosome content can influence cellular function in healthy or pathological ways. Furthermore, since exosomes reflect the features of the parental cells, their cargoes offer opportunities for early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention of diseases. Exosomes have unique characteristics that make them ideal for delivering drugs directly to the brain. These characteristics include the ability to pass through the BBB, biocompatibility, stability, and innate targeting properties. This review emphasizes the role of exosomes in alleviating NDs and discusses the associated signaling pathways and molecular mechanisms. Furthermore, the unique biological features of exosomes, making them a promising natural transporter for delivering various medications to the brain to combat several NDs, are also discussed.

Abstract Purpose: Recent studies have reported the promising effect of intravitreal propranolol on retinal neovascularization. However, rapid clearance and short half-life of the drug in the vitreous are the main drawbacks of this therapeutic approach. This study investigates the extension of the residence time of propranolol in the vitreous by polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) with the prospect of improving choroidal neovascularization treatment. Methods: The poly (lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) NPs were fabricated by a modified double emulsion solvent evaporation method and the obtained NPs were characterized for their size, poly dispersity index (PDI), and surface image. The in vitro release, cell cytotoxicity, and uptake of NPs were also evaluated. To investigate the effect of the vitreous pharmacokinetic drug loaded NPs versus that of the free propranolol, they were intravitreally injected into the rabbits' eyes and the drug vitreous concentrations in defined intervals were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results: The spherical NPs with about 230 nm size, and almost 10% drug loading were obtained. Based on the 3-(4, 5-Dimethylthiazol-2-Yl)-2, 5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide (MTT) outcomes, 30 µg/ml of propranolol was considered as the guide dosage in the intravitreal injection. Confocal microscopy images verified the presence of labeled NPs in the posterior segment after five days of receiving the injection. In vivo assay revealed that the vanishing rate of propranolol in rabbits treated with propranolol NPs was reduced at twice the rate as compared to that of the vanishing rate experienced with only the free drug. Conclusion: PLGA NPs can prolong the existence of propranolol in both vitreous and posterior ocular tissues, and thus, may provide an effective approach in treatment of posterior segment neovascularization.

Abstract Remarkable resistance of bacterial biofilms to high doses of antimicrobials and antibiotics is one of their main challenges. Encapsulation of proteolytic enzymes is one of the suggested strategies to tackle this problem. In this regard, the antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity of biocompatible hyaluronic acid- Lysine nanogels containing serratiopeptidase (SRP-loaded HA-Lys nanogel) was assessed against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus strains. SRP-loaded HA-Lys nanogel was prepared using dropping method and optimized by Box-Behnken experimental design. These formulations were studied for physical characterization, release profile, stability, bioactivity, and anti-biofilm effects. The particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), and surface charge were measured by Zetasizer Nano ZS. The average particle size and zeta potential of the optimum sample were 156 nm and -14.1 mV, respectively. SRP release showed an initial burst followed by sustained release and the highest release was around 77%. Enzyme biological activity data revealed the higher efficiency of free SRP compared to SRP-loaded HA-Lys nanogel. The time-kill assay showed that both forms of SRP-loaded HA-Lys nanogel and blank HA-Lys nanogel showed significant antimicrobial activity against examined bacteria in comparison to the free enzyme. The obtained results demonstrated improved anti-biofilm efficacy and down regulation of tested biofilm genes for both SRP-loaded HA-Lys nanogel 100% and blank HA-Lys nanogel 100% compared to SRP 100%.

Introduction: Recent studies showed that rapamycin, as a mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor, could have beneficial therapeutic effects for the central nervous system (CNS) related diseases. However, the immunosuppressive effect of rapamycin as an adverse effect, the low water solubility, and the rapid in vivo degradation along with the blood-brain barrier-related challenges restricted the clinical use of this drug for brain diseases. To overcome these drawbacks, a transferrin (Tf) decorated nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) containing rapamycin was designed and developed. Methods: Rapamycin-loaded cationic and bare NLCs were prepared using solvent diffusion and sonication method and well characterized. The optimum cationic NLCs were physically decorated with Tf. For in vitro study, the MTT assay and intracellular uptake of nanoparticles on U-87 MG glioblastoma cells were assessed. The animal biodistribution of nanoparticles was evaluated by fluorescent optical imaging. Finally, the in vivo effect of NLCs on the immune system was also studied. Results: Spherical NLCs with small particle sizes ranging from 120 to 150 nm and high entrapment efficiency of more than 90%, showed ≥80% cell viability. More importantly, Tf-decorated NLCs in comparison with bare NLCs, showed a significantly higher cellular uptake (97% vs 60%) after 2 hours incubation and further an appropriate brain accumulation with lower uptake in untargeted tissue in mice. Surprisingly, rapamycin-loaded NLCs exhibited no immunosuppressive effect. Conclusion: Our findings proposed that the designed Tf-decorated NLCs could be considered as a safe and efficient carrier for targeted brain delivery of rapamycin which may have an important value in the clinic for the treatment of neurological disorders.

Abstract Purpose: The use of more potent medicine for local chemotherapy of retinoblastoma in order to minimize local and systemic adverse effects is essential. The main goal of this investigation was to assess the biodistribution of thiolated and methylated chitosan-carboxymethyl dextran nanoparticles (CMD-TCs-NPs and CMD-TMC-NPs) following intravitreal (IVT) injection into rat eyes with retinoblastoma. Methods: An ionic gelation method was used to fabricate Cy5-labelled CMD-TCs-NPs and CMD-TMC-NPs. The NPs were characterized. Cellular internalization of Cy5-labelled NPs was investigated using confocal microscopy and the absorption of labeled NPs was quantified by flow cytometry in human retinoblastoma (Y79) cells. In addition, the Cy5-labeled distribution of nanoparticles in the posterior segment of the eye was histologically imaged by confocal microscopy after IVT injection of NPs into the eyes of rats with retinoblastoma. Results: CMD-TCs-NPs and CMD-TMC-NPs showed a mean diameter of 34 ± 3.78 nm and 42 ± 4.23 nm and zeta potential of +11 ± 2.27 mV and +29 ± 4.31mV, respectively. The in vivo study of intraocular biodistribution of Cy5-labeled CMD-TCs-NPs and CMD-TMC-NPs revealed that there is more affinity of CMD-TCs-NPs to the retina and retinoblastoma tumor after IVT administration while methylated chitosan nanoparticles are immobilized in the vitreous and are not able to reach the retina even after 24 hr. Conclusion: The ionic gelation technique was efficient in synthesizing a biocompatible polymeric nanosystem for drug delivery into the posterior segment of the eye. The current study demonstrated increased ocular bioavailability of CMD-TCs-NPs relative to CMD-TMC-NPs in retinoblastoma induced rat eyes.

Abstract Purpose: This research intended to fabricate the thiolated chitosan-dextran nanoparticles (NPs) containing topotecan (TPH-CMD-TCS-NPs) to assess the ability of NPs in improving the efficacy of intravitreal chemotherapy of retinoblastoma in a rabbit xenograft model. Methods: The coacervation process was used to produce the NPs. The cellular uptake of Cyanine-3 (CY3)-labeled NPs were investigated in human retinoblastoma Y79 cells using confocal microscopy. Also, the prepared TPH-CMD-TCS-NPs were tested in vitro by the tetrazolium dyes II (XTT) and flow cytometry in order to assess their cytotoxicity. In addition, a rabbit xenograft model of retinoblastoma was developed to test the antitumor effectiveness of TPH-CMD-TCS-NPs through intravitreal administration. Results: NPs had a mean diameter, polydispersity index, and zeta potential of 30 ± 4 nm, 0.24 ± 0.03 and +10 ± 3 mV, respectively. NPs (IC50s 40.40 compared to 126.20 nM, P = 0.022) were more effective than free topotecan as a dose-based feature. The tumor reaction to intravitreal chemotherapy with NPs was measured by evaluating the percentage of necrosis in the tumor tissue (91 ± 2%) and vitreous seeds (89 ± 9%) through hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. In comparison with the control group, the TPH-CMD-TCs-NPs treated group showed a significant decrease in tumor volume seven days after the intravitreal injection (P = 0.039). No significant changes were found in the ERG parameters after the intravitreal injection of TPH-CMD-TCs-NPs or TPH (P > 0.05). Conclusion: This investigation revealed definitive antitumor efficacy of TPH-CMD-TCS-NPs by intravitreal administration in the rabbit xenograft retinoblastoma model.

Abstract Herein, in a one-pot method, the reduced graphene oxide layers with the assistance of multiwalled carbon nanotubes were decorated to provide a suitable space for the in situ growth of CoNi2S4, and the porphyrins were incorporated into the layers as well to increase the sensitivity of the prepared nanostructure. The prepared nanocomposite can establish π–π interactions between the genetic material and on the surface of porphyrin rings. Also, hydrogen bonds between genetic domains and the porphyrin’ nitrogen and the surface hydroxyl groups are probable. Furthermore, the potential donor–acceptor relationship between the d7 transition metal, cobalt, and the genetic material provides a suitable way to increase the interaction and gene loading , and transfections. The reason for this phenomenon was optimized to increase the EGFP by up to 17.9%. Furthermore, the sensing ability of the nanocomposite towards H2O2 was investigated. In this regard, the limit of detection of the H2O2 obtained 10 µM. Also, the in situ biosensing ability in the HEK-293 and PC12 cell lines was evaluated by the addition of PMA. The nanocomposite showed the ability to detect the released H2O2 after adding the minimum amount of 120 ng/mL of the PMA.

Manufacturing strategy in the simplest definition means configuring manufacturing decisions tailored to the company's competitive priorities. Therefore, the first step in developing a manufacturing strategy is to properly recognize all manufacturing decision areas, In addition, in each decision, there are several alternatives for companies, and the choice of different alternatives together forms the configuration of the manufacturing unit. These decisions need to be customized for each industry because the nature of production in each industry is different. This research aims to do this in the Iranian chemical pharmaceutical industry. First, a comprehensive list of manufacturing decisions and alternatives was obtained by studying the research literature, and then more than 25 interviews were conducted with experts in the industry based on it. The interviews were analyzed using Qualitative Content Analysis method. The results showed that due to strict legal requirements in drug production and the specific type of drug sales in the Iranian market, companies in most decision areas, do not differ much from each other and the options available to them are limited. Therefore, the main difference between the manufacturers of chemical drugs in Iran is due to the difference in decision-making in the areas of Human Resource Management and Quality Management; and these two areas have a significant impact on the competitive position of companies. Also, cooperation with foreign leading companies in the field of process design, obtaining formulation and supply of raw materials has a great impact on the competitive position of companies in this industry in Iran.

Purpose: Vitiligo is a long-term common autoimmune disease in which growing patches of skin lose their color. There is no FDA-approved treatment for vitiligo. However, recent studies have demonstrated an immunosuppressive effect on vitiligo lesions in mouse models by simvastatin. A topical formulation was prepared containing simvastatin-loaded nano lipid carriers (simNLCs) for vitiligo treatment followed by evaluating their physicochemical characteristics and clinical safety. Methods: Both the lipid phase and the aqueous phase were heated to 75°C separately, and then simvastatin was dispersed in the lipid phase added to the aqueous phase. The mixture was homogenized for 1 minute, then for Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLC) formation, the emulsion was sonicated using a probe sonicator. The simNLCs produced were evaluated for drug entrapment, particle size and morphology, zeta potential, polydispersity index, viscosity, drug content, in vitro drug release, in vivo skin safety test, and long-term stability studies. Results: Dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry techniques proved the formation of a stable formulation containing spherical particles with nanoscale size. The drug entrapment efficiency and the drug-loading capacity were determined to be 99.27% and 3.9%, respectively. Human safety results indicated that adding simvastatin to lipid nanoparticles did not cause any changes to skin biophysical parameters. Conclusion: The preparation method of simNLC developed in this study is a suitable method, and the nanoparticles fabricated were safe with acceptable long-term stability and drug entrapment.

Ocular disorders comprising various diseases of the anterior and posterior segments are considered as the main reasons for blindness. Natural products have been identified as potential treatments for ocular diseases due to their anti-oxidative, antiangiogenic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Unfortunately, most of these beneficial compounds are characterised by low solubility which results in low bioavailability and rapid systemic clearance thus requiring frequent administration or requiring high doses, which hinders their therapeutic applications. Additionally, the therapeutic efficiency of ocular drug delivery as a popular route of drug administration for the treatment of ocular diseases is restricted by various anatomical and physiological barriers. Recently, nanotechnology-based strategies including polymeric nanoparticles, micelles, nanofibers, dendrimers, lipid nanoparticles, liposomes, and niosomes have emerged as promising approaches to overcome limitations and enhance ocular drug bioavailability by effective delivery to the target sites. This review provides an overview of nano-drug delivery systems of natural compounds such as thymoquinone, catechin, epigallocatechin gallate, curcumin, berberine, pilocarpine, genistein, resveratrol, quercetin, naringenin, lutein, kaempferol, baicalin, and tetrandrine for ocular applications. This approach involves increasing drug concentration in the carriers to enhance drug movement into and through the ocular barriers.

The functional significance of upregulation miR-34a in combination with albumin-bound paclitaxel nanoparticles in U251 glioblastoma cell line has been evaluated. The MTT assay determined that miR-34a and albumin-bound paclitaxel nanoparticles can reduce cell viability, but the combination of both factors has a stronger effect on cell viability. The application of qRT-PCR has demonstrated that the transduction of miR-34a could lead to exogenous upregulation of miR-34a level and downregulation of SURVIVIN. Moreover, treatment of U251 cells with miR-34a and nanoparticles together considerably inhibit SURVIVIN expression compared to miR-34a and nanoparticles alone. Flow cytometry showed that upon miR-34a overexpression cell cycle arrested in G1 phase, while treatment with nanoparticles increased the cell population in G2 phase. Upregulation of miR-34a along with treatment with nanoparticles elevated the number of cells arrested in G1/ G2 phases of the cell cycle. Expression of miR-34a with albumin-bound paclitaxel nanoparticles reduced cell viability, downregulated SURVIVIN and enhanced cell cycle arrest in G1/G2 phases. Thus, the upregulation of miR-34a with these nanoparticles are potential candidates therapeutic for glioblastoma cancer.

Protein coating is an outstanding surface modification strategy to influence the organization of biomolecules on the interface of nanomaterials. In the present study, fibronectin (FN) was used to modify the surface chemistry of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and carboxylated SWNTs (CO2-SWNTs) to analyze its effects on the protein corona composition and cellular uptake. At first, the successful coating of FN on the surface of both SWNTs was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the biomolecular organization of SWNTs and CO2-SWNTs coronas was changed after FN coating based on the evidences obtained from the surface plasmon intensity of the samples. Moreover, the MTT assay and confocal microscopy imaging revealed less cytotoxicity and cellular uptake of SWNTs coronas in comparison to bulk samples, respectively. It is suggested that protein coating of SWNTs can modify the corona pattern and consequently the biological behavior of carbon nanotubes. Medication errors are the second most common cause of adverse patient safety incidents and the single most common preventable cause of adverse events in medical practice. Given the high human fatalities and financial burden of medication errors for healthcare systems worldwide, reducing their occurrence is a global priority. Therefore, appropriate policies to reduce medication errors, using national data and valid statistics are required. The primary objective of this study was to provide a national ‘characteristic profile’ of medication error-associated adverse drug reactions (ADRs), which are also known as preventable ADRs (pADRs). A retrospective study of pADR reports submitted to the national pharmacovigilance center (PCV) within Iran’s Food and Drug Administration was conducted over a 2-year period (2015-2017). Preventability Method (P-Method), which is a standardized tool developed and recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), was used for preventability assessment. The results of the analyses revealed that while the number of pADRs increased from year one to two (601 to 630), their proportion out of all ADRs per year decreased (7.32% to 6.44%). The percentage of pADRs was higher in females (61.01%) and adults (83.27%), and the highest number of reports were received by nurses (71.57%). Having ‘a documented hypersensitivity to an administered drug or drug class’ was the most common preventable factor in both years (61.23% and 54.29% respectively), and ‘anti-infectives used systemically’ were the medication class which primarily contributed to both serious (53.29%) and non-serious pADRs (39.19%). The specific characteristics of medication errors associated with ADRs from this study, especially the preventable criteria which led to their occurrence, can help devise more specific preventative policies.

Abstract Background Iranian health sector encountered many challenges in resource allocation and health service purchasing during the past decades, the aim of this study was to determine the main challenges of the present process of health service purchasing for national policymakers and other developing countries with the same setting. Methods It was a qualitative study carried out via the complete content analysis of all relevant national documents from 2007 to 2014. In order to retrieve the related documents, we searched the official websites related to the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, four main Iranian insurance organizations, the Health Committee of the Parliament Profile, strategic vice president’s site and Supreme Insurance Council. After recognition of documents, their credibility and authenticity were evaluated in terms of their publication or adjustment. For the analysis of documents, the four step-Scott method was used applying MAXQDA version 10. Results Findings illustrated that health service purchase challenges in the country can be classified in 6 main themes of policy-making, executive, intersectional, natural, legal and informational challenges with 26 subthemes. Furthermore, 5 themes of Basic Benefit Package, Reimbursement,Decision making, Technology and Contract are considered as the main Challenges in pharmaceutical purchasing area containing 13 relevant subthemes. Conclusions It seems that according to documents, Iran has faced many structural and procedural problems with the purchase of the best health interventions. So it is highly recommended to consider consequences derived from the present challenges and try to use these evidences in their policy making process to decrease the existed problems and move to better procurement of health interventions.

Purpose: Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) have been proven to possess pharmaceutical advantages. They have the ability to deliver hydrophilic drugs through lipid membranes of the body. However, the loading of such drugs into SLNs is challenging. Hydrophilic nicotinamide, a histone deacetylase inhibitor, is used to establish SLNs with enhanced encapsulation efficiency by using statistical design. Methods: The possible effective parameters of these particles’ characteristics were determined using pre-formulation studies and preliminary tests. Afterwards, the Response Surface Method (RSM) was utilized to optimize the preparation condition of SLNs. The effect of the amount of lipid, drug, surfactant, and the mixing apparatus were studied on particle size, zeta potential, and encapsulation efficiency of the obtained particles. The acquired particles were characterized in respect of their morphology, in vitro release profile, and cytotoxicity. Results: According to this study, all the dependant variables could be fitted into quadratic models. Particles of 107 nm with zeta potential of about -40.9 and encapsulation efficiency of about 36% were obtained under optimized preparation conditions; i.e. with stearic acid to phospholipon® 90G ratio of 7.5 and nicotinamide to sodium taurocholate ratio of 14.74 using probe sonication. The validation test confirmed the model’s suitability. The release profile demonstrated the controlled release profile following the initial burst release. Neither the nicotinamide nor the SLNs showed toxicity under the evaluated concentrations. Conclusion: The acquired results suggested the suitability of the model for designing the delivery system with a highly encapsulated water soluble drug for controlling its delivery.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used as porous nanomaterials for different applications ranging from industrial to biomedicals. An unpredictable one-pot method is introduced to synthesize NH2-MIL-53 assisted by high-gravity in a greener media for the first time. Then, porphyrins were deployed to adorn the surface of MOF to increase the sensitivity of the prepared nanocomposite to the genetic materials and in-situ cellular protein structures. The hydrogen bond formation between genetic domains and the porphyrin’ nitrogen as well as the surface hydroxyl groups is equally probable and could be considered a milestone in chemical physics and physical chemistry for biomedical applications. In this context, the role of incorporating different forms of porphyrins, their relationship with the final surface morphology, and their drug/gene loading efficiency were investigated to provide a predictable pattern in regard to the previous works. The conceptual phenomenon was optimized to increase the interactions between the biomolecules and the substrate by reaching the limit of detection to 10 pM for the Anti-cas9 protein, 20 pM for the single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), below 10 pM for the single guide RNA (sgRNA) and also around 10 nM for recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen. Also, the MTT assay showed acceptable relative cell viability of more than 85% in most cases, even by increasing the dose of the prepared nanostructures.

Purpose: One of the most nutritional disorders around the world is iron deficiency. A novel iron compound was synthesized by chelating ferrous ions with alanine for prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia. Methods: The newly synthesized compound was characterized both qualitatively and quantitatively by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The bioavailability of newly synthesized iron micronutrient was evaluated in four groups of Wistar rats. The group I was a negative control group and the other three groups received three different iron formulations. After 14 days, the blood samples were taken and analyzed accordingly. Results: Calculations showed that more than 91.8% of iron was incorporated in the chelate formulation. In vivo studies showed that serum iron, total iron binding capacity and hemoglobin concentrations were significantly increased in group IV, which received ferrous bis alanine chelate compared with the negative control group (p

Objective(s): Irinotecan is a potent anti-cancer drug from camptothecin group which inhibits topoisomerase I. Recently, biodegradable and biocompatible polymers such as poly lactide-co-glycolides (PLGA) have been considered for the preparation of nanoparticles (NPs). Materials and Methods: In this study, irinotecan loaded PLGA NPs were fabricated by an emulsification/solvent diffusion method to improve the efficacy of irinotecan. The effect of several parameters on the NPs’ characteristics was assessed, including the amount of drug and polymer, the amount and volume of the poly vinyl alcohol as a surfactant, and also the internal-phase volume/composition. The irinotecan entrapment efficiency and the particle size distribution were optimized by changing these variables. The cytotoxicity of the particles was evaluated by cell viability assay.Results: NPs were spherical with a comparatively mono-dispersed size distribution and negative zeta potential. Selected formulation (S9) showed suitable size distribution about120 nm with relative high drug entrapment. MTT assay showed a stronger cytotoxicity of S9 against HT-29 cancer cells than control NPs and irinotecan free drug. The release kinetic indicated Log-Probability model in S9.Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that the designed NPs show suitable characteristic and also great potential for further in vivo cancer evaluation.

In this study, nystatin liposomal formulation was prepared and characterized. The physicochemical properties of formulations including vesicle size, drug entrapment stability and in vitro release were studied. The highest entrapment efficiency of nystatin into liposomes was obtained about 70% when cholesterol (CHO) was added to the formulations prepared with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine. In addition, the drug entrapment efficiency was decreased when distearoylphosphatidylcholine was used but it was improved by addition of CHO and hydration with 9% sucrose solution. Liposomes with uniform size distribution and average size of 100 nm were produced. Long term stability study indicated that the lyophilized liposomal nystatin was physically stable for at least 6 months at 4 °C. In vitro anti-fungal activity of liposomal nystatin was found to be more effective than free nystatin against Candida albicans.

Decorating photocatalysts with noble metal nanoparticles (e.g., Pt) often increases the catalysts’ photocatalytic activity and biomedical properties. Here, a simple and inexpensive method has been developed to prepare a Pt-Ag3PO4/CdS/chitosan composite, which was characterized and used for the visible light-induced photocatalytic and antibacterial studies. This synthesized composite showed superior photocatalytic activity for methylene blue degradation as a hazardous pollutant (the maximum dye degradation was observed in 90 min of treatment) and killing of Gram positive bacterial (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus) as well as Gram negative bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) under visible light irradiation. The antibacterial activity of CdS, CdS/Ag3PO4, and Pt-Ag3PO4/CdS/chitosan against E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus showed the zone of inhibition (mm) under visible light and under dark conditions at a concentration of 20 µg mL−1. Furthermore, the cell viability of the CdS/chitosan, Ag3PO4, Ag3PO4/CdS/chitosan, and Pt-Ag3PO4/CdS/chitosan were investigated on the human embryonic kidney 293 cells (HEK-293), Henrietta Lacks (HeLa), human liver cancer cell line (HepG2), and pheochromocytoma (PC12) cell lines. In addition, the results indicated that the photodegradation rate for Pt-Ag3PO4/CdS/chitosan is 3.53 times higher than that of CdS and 1.73 times higher than that of the CdS/Ag3PO4 composite. Moreover, Pt-Ag3PO4/CdS/chitosan with an optimal amount of CdS killed large areas of different bacteria and different cells separately in a shorter time period under visible-light irradiation, which shows significantly higher efficiency than pure CdS and other CdS/Ag3PO4 composites. The superb performances of this composite are attributed to its privileged properties, such as retarded recombination of photoinduced electron/hole pairs and a large specific surface area, making Pt-Ag3PO4/CdS/chitosan a valuable composite that can be deployed for a range of important applications, such as visible light-induced photocatalysis and antibacterial activity.

Following his inauguration in late 2013, President Rouhani aimed to boost quality and equity in the health care delivery system. To fulfill this aim, a set of interventions, called Health Transformation Plan (HTP), were implemented. So far, it has been a heated debate whether HTP breathes a spirit of a new reform. HTP has targeted long-standing historical deficits of the Iranian health system as well as urgent problems, both of which have been, to some extent, resolved. To decrease Out-Of-Pocket (OOP) health expenditures, HTP has presented new financing mechanisms to expand a safety net to Iranian citizens fundamentally. HTP also encompassed interventions to overcome problems in the provision of health care by recruitment of health workforces, establishing new health facilities, and expanding primary health care to urban and peri-urban areas. Furthermore, performance indicators including access, quality, and patient satisfaction have been affected. Given these changes, HTP is entitled to be a health system reform. However, a new agenda within HTP is required so that the Iranian health system can obtain better value for money that is to be spending on it.

Purpose: Aggregation suppressing additives have been used to stabilize proteins during manufacturing and storage. Interferonβ-1b is prone to aggregation because of being non-glycosylated. Aggregation behavior of albumin-free formulations of recombinant IFNβ-1b was explored using additives such as n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside, Tween 20, arginine, glycine, trehalose and sucrose at different pH. Methods: Fractional factorial design was applied to select major factors affecting aggregation in solutions. Box-Behnken technique was used to optimize the best concentration of additives and protein. Results: Quadratic model was the best fitted model for particle size, OD350 and OD280/OD260. The optimal conditions of 0.2% n-Dodecyl-β-D-maltoside, 70 mM arginine, 189 mM trehalose and protein concentration of 0.50 mg/ml at pH 4 were achieved. A potency value of 91% ± 5% was obtained for the optimized formulation. Conclusion: This study shows that the combination of n-Dodecyl-β-D-maltoside, arginine and trehalose would demonstrate a significant stabilizing and anti-aggregating effect on the liquid formulation of interferonβ-1b. It can not only reduce the manufacturing costs but will also ease patient compliance.

Many research studies have been conducted on the use of conjugated polymers in the construction of chemical sensors including potentiometric, conductometric and amperometric sensors or biosensors over the last decade. The induction of conductivity on conjugated polymers by treating them with suitable oxidizing agents won Heeger, MacDiarmid and Shirakawa the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Common conjugated polymers are poly(acetylene)s, poly(pyrrole)s, poly(thiophene)s, poly(terthiophene)s, poly(aniline)s, poly(fluorine)s, poly(3-alkylthiophene)s, polytetrathiafulvalenes, polynapthalenes, poly(p-phenylene sulfide), poly(p-phenylenevinylene)s, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), polyparaphenylene, polyazulene, polyparaphenylene sulfide, polycarbazole and polydiaminonaphthalene. More than 60 sensors for inorganic cations and anions with different characteristics based on conducting polymers have been reported. There have also been reports on the application of non-conducting polymers (nCPs), i.e. PVC, in the construction of potentiometric membrane sensors for determination of more than 60 inorganic cations and anions. However, the leakage of ionophores from the membranes based on these polymers leads to relatively lower life times. In this article, we try to give an overview of Solid-Contact ISE (SCISE), Single-Piece ISE (SPISE), Conducting Polymer (CP)-Based, and also non-conducting polymer PVC-based ISEs for various ions which their difference is in the way of the polymer used with selective membrane. In SCISEs and SPISEs, the plasticized PVC containing the ionophore and ionic additives govern the selectivity behavior of the electrode and the conducting polymer is responsible of ion-to-electron transducer. However, in CPISEs, the conducting polymer layer is doped with a suitable ionophore which enhances the ion selectivity of the CP while its redox response has to be suppressed.

Ionophore incorporated PVC membrane sensors are well-established analyticaltools routinely used for the selective and direct measurement of a wide variety of differentions in complex biological and environmental samples. Potentiometric sensors have someoutstanding advantages including simple design and operation, wide linear dynamic range,relatively fast response and rational selectivity. The vital component of such plasticizedPVC members is the ionophore involved, defining the selectivity of the electrodes' complexformation. Molecular recognition causes the formation of many different supramolecules.Different types of supramolecules, like calixarenes, cyclodextrins and podands, have beenused as a sensing material in the construction of ion selective sensors. Schiff's bases andcrown ethers, which feature prominently in supramolecular chemistry, can be used assensing materials in the construction of potentiometric ion selective electrodes. Up to now,more than 200 potentiometric membrane sensors for cations and anions based on Schiff'sbases and crown ethers have been reported. In this review cation binding and anioncomplexes will be described. Liquid membrane sensors based on Schiff's bases and crownethers will then be discussed.

Introduction: Critical role of quality assurance (QA) system in the pharmaceutical industry could affect on product quality, market development, customer satisfaction, and other element of a successful drug company. Purpose of the Study: The main aim of this study is to evaluate of QA system, the relevant factors to the good manufacturing practice principles and detection of gap between knowledge and implementation of QA indices by their managers in pharmaceutical companies of Iran. Method: This study contains designing a validated questionnaire with the expert panel and completing it in the pilot and final phases. Results: This study have shown that there is a gap between knowledge of QA seniors and their practice in all categories of QA indices. Furthermore, it has been shown that measurement category has maximum gap. Moreover, machinery has minimum gap between all categories. Conclusion: The status of QA managers’ knowledge is appropriate, but implementation of QA indices in Iranian pharmaceutical industry is not appropriate.
