Background: Stigma and trust influence how adolescents seek support for mental illness, though it is unclear how these influence their decisions to approach a range of potential sources of support. Moreover, even less is known about the ways in which these issues are related when a friend discloses symptoms of mental illness. Objective: The study's aims were to understand the role of stigma, trust, and threat appraisals in adolescents' support seeking when exposed to their own, or to a friend's, symptoms of mental illness. Method: A vignette-based study comparing reports of support (friends, parents, teachers, professionals, and online) was completed with reference to either (i) experiencing symptoms of mental illness or (ii) having a friend disclose these types of symptoms. Two hundred and fifty adolescents (M = 12.75 years) answered questions pertaining to stigma (public and self), trust levels, threat appraisals, and support seeking. Results: When dealing with their own symptoms, threat accounted for 4.8 and 2.5% of the variance when seeking support from parents and professionals, respectively. Self-stigma accounted for 2.4% of variance when seeking support from parents and 0.8% of variance when seeking support from professionals. Trust moderated the association between threat and the use of online support. When responding to a friend's disclosure, higher levels of public-stigma were associated with lower support seeking from friends, parents, and professionals. Conclusions: This study showed a distinction in how adolescents deal with their own or a friend's symptoms of mental illness, and what resources they choose to ask for support from. Self-stigma, threat, and trust levels were particularly relevant when experiencing their own symptoms, while dealing with a friend's disclosure was related to levels of public-stigma.

Underpinned by the transactional model of stress (Lazarus and Folkman in Stress, appraisal, and coping, Springer, Berlin, 1984), the aim of this pre-registered study was to test the role of cognitive appraisals (threat, challenge, control, blame, and perceived social support) in the longitudinal relationship between peer-victimization and depressive symptomatology. Measures of peer-victimization, cognitive appraisal (threat, challenge, control, blame, and perceived social support), and depressive symptomatology were included in a self-report questionnaire, and data were collected at three-time points each one month apart. Participants were 530 adolescents aged 11-14 who reported experiencing peer-victimization at the beginning of this study. Results of the cross-lagged panel analyses found both an association between peer-victimization and depressive symptomatology after three months, alongside an association between depressive symptomatology and later peer-victimization. Perceived social support from parents/guardians, teachers, or close friends did not significantly moderate this relationship. Peer-victimization at the start of the study was significantly associated with challenge, but not threat, appraisals one month later. Both threat and challenge appraisals in the second month of the study were related to depressive symptomatology at the end of the study, one month later. A small significant total indirect effect via threat and challenge appraisal was found, though neither was a significant mediator on its own. This study highlights the role of challenge and threat appraisals in adolescents' adaptation to peer-victimization.

AbstractInflection points are pivotal moments immediately preceding self-directed violence (SDV; i.e., self-injury and suicide). This study qualitatively examined factors that contributed to halting SDV during inflection points. Participants (N = 166) completing an online survey were community-dwelling adults in the United Kingdom with some form of SDV lived experience. Thematic analysis yielded the following results. The most common themes across SDV inflection points were (in descending order): concern for the negative impact on others (e.g., fear of hurting loved ones), use of adaptive coping methods (e.g., general use of coping skills), physical deterrents (e.g., scarring, pain), social contact (sense of connection in the moment), and concern for negative consequences on oneself (e.g., fear of punishment). Healthy coping skill use contributed to halting both self-injury and suicide. Self-injury inflection points were largely characterized by intrapersonal factors, whereas suicide inflection points were highly interpersonal in nature. Despite the influence of the integrated motivational-volitional (IMV)1 model on research and practice, the supporting literature has not been systematically synthesised. This systematic review aims to synthesise the literature testing the IMV model of suicidal behaviour. Using citation and database searching, PsycINFO, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for studies referencing the IMV model (last searched on 28th March 2023). Included studies empirically tested the hypotheses of the model. Quality assessment was conducted using the National Institute of Health tool. Findings from 98 records (100 studies, 138,365 participants) were narratively synthesised. Results from studies directly testing the hypothesised pathways of the model supported the defeat-entrapment-suicidal ideation pathway of the IMV model. Case–control studies comparing differences between control, ideation, and enactment groups were consistent with hypotheses in univariate and cross-sectional analyses. However, support for the model was mixed for case–control multivariate and prospective studies. Due to low overlap in variables studied, the role of specific pre-motivational phase variables and stage-specific moderators was inconclusive. The studies received overall good quality ratings. The IMV model presents a promising framework for understanding and preventing suicide. Defeat, entrapment, and key variables may be useful in informing suicide prevention measures. The Life Attitudes Schedule-Short Form (LAS-SF) is a measure of suicide proneness featuring various conceptual models. We tested four competing LAS-SF factor structures, as well as construct validity with mental health and suicide metrics. Community dwelling adults (N = 488) completed an online cross-sectional survey. Results supported a four factor (i.e., death-related, health-related, injury-related, and self-related subscales) LAS-SF structure with one higher order factor. Death-related, injury-related, and self-related subscales demonstrated moderate positive associations with mental health and suicidal ideation. Death-related and self-related subscales showed links with suicidal ideation, as well as suicide and depression risk (controlling for other factors). This study is important in highlighting suicide proneness theory may need to be refined. LAS-SF uses include possible risk screening in clinical settings and future focus on the psychological death aspects of the LAS-SF in prospective research. Background: Improved understanding of how US service members transition from chronic/baseline to acute suicide risk is warranted. One such model, the Integrated Motivational Volitional Model of Suicide, posits entrapment as central to this process. However, entrapment has not been extensively investigated within military populations. Methods: This study examines the factor structure, reliability, and predictive validity of the Entrapment Scale (E‐Scale) within a military population. Exploratory structural equation modeling (SEM) and confirmatory factor analysis compared one‐ versus two‐factor structures of the E‐Scale. Autoregressive SEM assessed if E‐Scale scores predicted suicidal ideation and suicide attempt likelihood at 6‐ and 12‐month follow‐up, and examined whether the impact of entrapment was moderated by social support (i.e., appraisal, tangible, and belonging). Results: Results favored a two‐factor solution (external and internal) of entrapment. The relationship between entrapment and suicide outcomes was moderated by perceived social support but in unexpected directions. Unexpectedly, social support strengthened the relationship between external entrapment and suicide outcomes for most models. Only tangible support moderated the relationship between internal entrapment (IE) and suicide outcomes as predicted. Conclusions: IE is linked with suicidal ideation in the short‐term, whereas external entrapments relationship with suicide outcomes may reflect more persistent social challenges for military members. The aim of the study was to test the relationship between experiences of being bullied, cyberbullied, and mental health difficulties, and whether these relationships are moderated by perceived social support and gender. Data were collected from 3737 year 8 pupils (aged 12 and 13 years; 50.1% male) using an online questionnaire. Measures of bullying victimization, perceived social support, and mental health difficulties were included in the online questionnaire. Moderation analyses were conducted to test whether the relationships between being bullied, cyberbullied, and mental health difficulties were moderated by perceived social support and gender. Four models were estimated, each assessing a different source of perceived social support (from family, friends and peers, professional sources, and the perception of having no support). Results of these analyses indicated that across all four models being bullied was significantly associated with mental health difficulties, and being cyberbullied was only significantly associated with poorer mental health difficulties in girls in one of the models. The different sources of perceived social support did not moderate the relationship between experiences of being bullied or cyberbullied and mental health difficulties for either boys or girls. However, significant associations were found between a perceived lack of support, perceived social support from friends and family, and mental health difficulties in girls, but not in boys. The results contribute to a complex body of research findings exploring the role of perceived social support in the relationship between experiences of being bullied and mental health difficulties.

Background: Hate-motivated behaviour (HMB) ranges from microaggressions to criminal acts and is a public health concern with wide-ranging consequences. Aims: The current study aimed to examine the mental health correlates of HMB perpetration, victimisation and co-occurring victimisation/perpetration. Methods: Participants (n = 447) completed an online cross-sectional survey assessing demographic factors, HMB (perpetration and victimisation), positive mental wellbeing and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Results: HMB victimisation was associated with lower positive mental wellbeing and increased symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, neither HMB perpetration nor co-occurring perpetration/victimisation were associated with any of the three mental health outcome measures. Conclusion: Experiencing HMB as a victim is linked to increased psychological distress. Additional research, which focuses on sampling populations who are known to be at greater risk for involvement in HMB, is needed to fully understand the impact of the victim-offender overlap on mental health outcomes. This study qualitatively explored individuals’ self-described RFL and RFD in the context of suicidal thinking and behaviors.Within a community United Kingdom (UK) sample, adults (N = 331, aged 16+) responded to eight open-ended questions probing their experiences of suicide, defeat, and entrapment. Utilizing these data, which were collected from a larger online survey examining risk and protective factors for suicidal behaviors, this study explored RFL and RFD within these narratives. After the research team established an initial code book, RFL and RFD codes were subsequently analyzed through inductive and deductive thematic analyses.The present study identified five complimentary RFD-RFL themes: (1) Hopelessness-Hopefulness, (2) Stress of Responsibilities-Duty to Responsibilities, (3) Social Disconnection-Social Connection, (4) Death as Sin-Desire for an Afterlife, and (5) Temporary Escapes as Coping-Entrapment (i.e., a lack of escape). Three subthemes within the RFD theme Entrapment were General/Unspecified, By Feelings, and Within Self.Identified themes reflect the existing quantitative RFL and RFD literature. The identified RFL and RFD themes are discussed with reference to their clinical applications in advancing suicide-specific assessments and interventions. We propose a dimensional framework for RFD and RFL which informs future suicidal behaviors research and practice.The study highlights the complex co-existence of reasons for dying and reasons for living.Reasons for living and dying should be explored in parallel in a therapeutic setting.The relative value placed on RFL/RFD by the individual should also be considered. This article critically reflects on future directions in cross-cultural psychiatry and cultural psychology by engaging the challenges of interpreting psycho-social theories of causation and evidence in what is conventionally called "sorcery" in anthropology. This anthropologist argues that sorcery, notwithstanding its status as an older, classic topic in the history of anthropology and its seemingly "exotic" reputation, has continuing value in recent efforts to de-colonize the study of local ontology and moral personhood, in particular, in contexts of transcultural encounters. The focus here is on an incident in a Saharan Tuareg community that is locally-defined as "sorcery" (called ark echaghel in Tamajaq, their Amazigh language). Many Tuareg, predominantly Muslim, traditionally semi-nomadic, and socially-ranked, have experienced socio-economic and ecological upheavals, armed conflicts, and settled life in towns. This analysis examines a case of sorcery practice and its social context—of a transcultural encounter between a smith/artisan and a tourist and its aftermath—of diagnosis and commentary by an Islamic scholar—as moral discourse and local psycho-social treatment as critical commentary on and resistance to transcultural inequalities. The broader goal here is to suggest avenues to pursue by showing how sorcery reveals local ontology, moral discourse on evil, and culture theory. Thus, sorcery, rather than a "retrograde" or irrelevant topic, offers rich insights into local ontology's psycho-social and political implications, thereby contributing to current concerns in transcultural psychiatry with social and political power asymmetries, critical epistemologies, and indigenous critiques that question universalizing absolutist psychological interpretations in cultural encounters. Underpinned by the transactional model of stress (TMS), this systematic review synthesizes research testing the role of primary and secondary appraisals in the relationship between peer victimization and adjustment. A comprehensive literature search was undertaken and 23 articles were included in the review. Primary appraisals of threat and control, but not blame, mediated the relationship between peer victimization and adjustment. Secondary appraisals of self-efficacy and perceived social support were found to mediate and moderate the relationship. The findings of the review highlight the utility of the TMS in developing our understanding of individual differences in the relationship between peer victimization and adjustment. The development of the TMS in a peer victimization context, and future areas of research are discussed.

Young people struggle to seek help for their mental health, despite having different resources available. As the coping process is very complex, and elements such as trust and availability of resources have been said to influence it, this study aimed to understand how young people cope with their own or a friend's symptoms of poor mental health. Eleven young people (13–15 years old) were interviewed. Thematic Analysis of the interviews showed that participants reported different coping strategies for dealing with their own hypothetical symptoms and those of a friend. Participants identified the social impact of experiencing symptoms of poor mental health and choice of resources as the main factors influencing their coping strategies. For their own symptoms, young people expressed concern about being judged and that they would only disclose to someone they trust. Participants would not disclose a friend's symptoms because they did not want to break their trust. Finally, choice of resources was mainly influenced by the severity of symptoms being experienced, especially when it comes to asking for professional help. This study contributes to a better understanding of the different ways in which young people cope with their own symptoms and symptoms experienced by a friend. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Entrapment and defeat are empirically-supported suicide risk factors. Their measurement is the subject of some debate, however. Also, limited work exists examining sexual and gender minority (SGM) differences in these suicide risk factors despite overall elevated rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) for SGM persons. The present study examined (1) entrapment and defeat differences by sexual orientation and gender identity, (2) factor structure and criterion validity of the Entrapment Scale (E-Scale) and the Defeat Scale (D-Scale), and (3) measurement invariance by sexual orientation (subsamples were too small for gender identity). A sample of 1,027 adults living in the United Kingdom completed a cross-sectional online questionnaire assessing mental health. Analysis of Variance and Kruskal-Wallis testing revealed: (1) all sexual minority (i.e., gay/lesbian, bisexual, and other SM) persons reported higher internal and external entrapment, defeat, and suicidal ideation compared to their heterosexual counterparts, and; (2) gender minority (i.e., transgender and gender diverse) persons reported higher internal and external entrapment, defeat, and suicidal ideation compared to cisgender persons. Supported by suicide theory, confirmatory factor analysis showed modest support for a two-factor E-Scale (internal and external), and a one-factor D-Scale. All entrapment and defeat scores displayed significant moderate positive correlations with suicidal ideation. E- and D-scale scores displayed high intercorrelation, tempering confidence in conclusions regarding the facture structure findings. Item threshold-level responding varied by sexual orientation for the D-Scale but not the E-Scale.
