During electro-optical testing of the camera for the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, a unique low-signal pattern was found in differenced pairs of flat images used to create photon transfer curves, with peak-to-peak variations of a factor of 10^-3. A turbulent pattern of this amplitude was apparent in many differenced flat-fielded images. The pattern changes from image to image and shares similarities with atmospheric 'weather' turbulence patterns. We applied several strategies to determine the source of the turbulent pattern and found that it is representative of the mixing of the air and index of refraction variations caused by the internal camera purge system displacing air, which we are sensitive to due to our flat field project setup. Characterizing this changing environment with 2-D correlation functions of the 'weather' patterns provides evidence that the images reflect the changes in the camera environment due to the internal camera purge system. Simulations of the full optical system using the galsim and batoid codes show that the weather pattern affects the dispersion of the camera point-spread function at only the one part in 10^-4 level, Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted in JATISS

Thick, fully depleted charge-coupled devices (CCDs) are known to exhibit non-linear behavior at high signal levels due to the dynamic behavior of charges collecting in the potential wells of pixels, called the brighter-fatter effect (BFE). This particularly impacts bright calibration stars, which appear larger than their intrinsic shape, creating a flux-dependent point-spread function (PSF) that if left unmitigated, could make up a large fraction of the error budget in Stage IV weak-lensing (WL) surveys such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). In this paper, we analyze image measurements of flat fields and artificial stars taken at different illumination levels with the LSST Camera (LSSTCam) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in order to quantify this effect in the LSST Camera before and after a previously introduced correction technique. We observe that the BFE evolves anisotropically as a function of flux due to higher-order BFEs, which violates the fundamental assumption of this correction method. We then introduce a new sampling method based on a physically motivated model to account these higher-order terms in the correction, and then we test the modified correction on both datasets. We find that the new method corrects the effect in flat fields better than it corrects the effect in artificial stars which we conclude is the result of a unmodeled curl component of the deflection field by the correction. We use these results to define a new metric for the full-well capacity of our sensors and advise image processing strategies to further limit the impact of the effect on LSST WL science pathways., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory's LSST Camera (LSSTCam) pixel response has been characterized using laboratory measurements with a grid of artificial stars. We quantify the contributions to photometry, centroid, point-spread function size, and shape measurement errors due to small anomalies in the LSSTCam CCDs. The main sources of those anomalies are quantum efficiency variations and pixel area variations induced by the amplifier segmentation boundaries and "tree-rings" - circular variations in silicon doping concentration. This laboratory study using artificial stars projected on the sensors shows overall small effects. The residual effects on point-spread function (PSF) size and shape are below $0.1\%$, meeting the ten-year LSST survey science requirements. However, the CCD mid-line presents distortions that can have a moderate impact on PSF measurements. This feature can be avoided by masking the affected regions. Effects of tree-rings are observed on centroids and PSFs of the artificial stars and the nature of the effect is confirmed by a study of the flat-field response. Nevertheless, further studies of the full-focal plane with stellar data should more completely probe variations and might reveal new features, e.g. wavelength-dependent effects. Electro-optical testing and characterization of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Camera focal plane, consisting of 205 charge-coupled devices (CCDs) arranged into 21 stand-alone Raft Tower Modules (RTMs) and 4 Corner Raft Tower Modules (CRTMs), is currently being performed at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Testing of the camera sensors is performed using a set of custom-built optical projectors, designed to illuminate the full focal plane or specific regions of the focal plane with a series of light illumination patterns: the crosstalk projector, the flat illuminator projector, and the spot grid projector. In addition to measurements of crosstalk, linearity and full well, the ability to project realistically-sized sources, using the spot grid projector, makes possible unique measurements of instrumental signatures such as deferred charge distortions, astrometric shifts due to sensor effects, and the brighter-fatter effect, prior to camera first light. We describe the simulated sky survey underlying the second data challenge (DC2) carried out in preparation for analysis of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) by the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (LSST DESC). Significant connections across multiple science domains will be a hallmark of LSST; the DC2 program represents a unique modeling effort that stresses this interconnectivity in a way that has not been attempted before. This effort encompasses a full end-to-end approach: starting from a large N-body simulation, through setting up LSST-like observations including realistic cadences, through image simulations, and finally processing with Rubin's LSST Science Pipelines. This last step ensures that we generate data products resembling those to be delivered by the Rubin Observatory as closely as is currently possible. The simulated DC2 sky survey covers six optical bands in a wide-fast-deep (WFD) area of approximately 300 deg^2 as well as a deep drilling field (DDF) of approximately 1 deg^2. We simulate 5 years of the planned 10-year survey. The DC2 sky survey has multiple purposes. First, the LSST DESC working groups can use the dataset to develop a range of DESC analysis pipelines to prepare for the advent of actual data. Second, it serves as a realistic testbed for the image processing software under development for LSST by the Rubin Observatory. In particular, simulated data provide a controlled way to investigate certain image-level systematic effects. Given the current limited knowledge of meteor plasma micro-physics and its interaction with the surrounding atmosphere and ionosphere, meteors are a highly interesting observational target for high-resolution wide-field astronomical surveys. Such surveys are capable of resolving the physical size of meteor plasma heads, but they produce large volumes of images that need to be automatically inspected for possible existence of long linear features produced by meteors. Here we show how big aperture sky survey telescopes detect meteors as defocused tracks with a central brightness depression. We derive an analytic expression for a defocused point source meteor track and use it to calculate brightness profiles of meteors modeled as uniform brightness disks. We apply our modeling to meteor images as seen by the SDSS and LSST telescopes. The expression is validated by Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulations of photons traveling through the atmosphere and the LSST telescope optics. We show that estimates of the meteor distance and size can be extracted from the measured FWHM and the strength of the central dip in the observed brightness profile. However, this extraction becomes difficult when the defocused meteor track is distorted by the atmospheric seeing or contaminated by a long lasting glowing meteor trail. The FWHM of satellites tracks is distinctly narrower than meteor values, which enables removal of a possible confusion between satellites and meteors., Comment: submitted to MNRAS, 19 pages, 29 figures

We employ electrostatic conversion drift calculations to match CCD pixel signal covariances observed in flat field exposures acquired using candidate sensor devices for the LSST Camera. We thus constrain pixel geometry distortions present at the end of integration, based on signal images recorded. We use available data from several operational voltage parameter settings to validate our understanding. Our primary goal is to optimize flux point-spread function (FPSF) estimation quantitatively, and thereby minimize sensor-induced errors which may limit performance in precision astronomy applications. We consider alternative compensation scenarios that will take maximum advantage of our understanding of this underlying mechanism in data processing pipelines currently under development. To quantitatively capture the pixel response in high-contrast/high dynamic range operational extrema, we propose herein some straightforward laboratory tests that involve altering the time order of source illumination on sensors, within individual test exposures. We build on previous efforts to model CCD sensors, during illumination and collection of conversions. We use a finite summation of simple, electrostatic field models. The upgraded functionality of our framework provides specific predictions for perturbations in pixel boundary enclosures (e.g., at the backside window) and the bookkeeping capability to stack those perturbations so that they may be utilized as Greens functions -- portable calculation results that may be generically applied to a range of precision astronomy related problems that naturally including astrometric, photometric and shape transfer issues. Near-future astronomical survey experiments, such as LSST, possess system requirements of unprecedented fidelity that span photometry, astrometry and shape transfer. Some of these requirements flow directly to the array of science imaging sensors at the focal plane. Availability of high quality characterization data acquired in the course of our sensor development program has given us an opportunity to develop and test a framework for simulation and modeling that is based on a limited set of physical and geometric effects. In this paper we describe those models, provide quantitative comparisons between data and modeled response, and extrapolate the response model to predict imaging array response to astronomical exposure. The emergent picture departs from the notion of a fixed, rectilinear grid that maps photo-conversions to the potential well of the channel. In place of that, we have a situation where structures from device fabrication, local silicon bulk resistivity variations and photo-converted carrier patterns still accumulating at the channel, together influence and distort positions within the photosensitive volume that map to pixel boundaries. Strategies for efficient extraction of modeling parameters from routinely acquired characterization data are described. Methods for high fidelity illumination/image distribution parameter retrieval, in the presence of such distortions, are also discussed., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We describe the drift field in thick depleted silicon sensors as a superposition of a one-dimensional backdrop field and various three-dimensional perturbative contributions that are physically motivated. We compute trajectories for the conversions along the field lines toward the channel and into volumes where conversions are confined by the perturbative fields. We validate this approach by comparing predictions against measured response distributions seen in five types of fixed pattern distortion features. We derive a quantitative connection between "tree ring" flat field distortions to astrometric and shape transfer errors with connections to measurable wavelength dependence - as ancillary pixel data that may be used in pipeline analysis for catalog population. Such corrections may be tested on DECam data, where correlations between tree ring flat field distortions and astrometric errors - together with their band dependence - are already under study. Dynamic effects, including the brighter-fatter phenomenon for point sources and the flux dependence of flat field fixed pattern features are approached using perturbations similar in form to those giving rise to the fixed pattern features. These in turn provide drift coefficient predictions that can be validated in a straightforward manner. A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over 20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. (Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ground-based system sited at Cerro Pach\'{o}n in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg$^2$ field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel camera. The standard observing sequence will consist of pairs of 15-second exposures in a given field, with two such visits in each pointing in a given night. With these repeats, the LSST system is capable of imaging about 10,000 square degrees of sky in a single filter in three nights. The typical 5$\sigma$ point-source depth in a single visit in $r$ will be $\sim 24.5$ (AB). The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. The survey area will be contained within 30,000 deg$^2$ with $\delta<+34.5^\circ$, and will be imaged multiple times in six bands, $ugrizy$, covering the wavelength range 320--1050 nm. About 90\% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode which will uniformly observe a 18,000 deg$^2$ region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the anticipated 10 years of operations, and yield a coadded map to $r\sim27.5$. The remaining 10\% of the observing time will be allocated to projects such as a Very Deep and Fast time domain survey. In a series of papers, Nicastro et al. have reported the detection of z>0 OVII absorption features in the spectrum of Mrk421 obtained with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS). We evaluate this result in the context of a high quality spectrum of the same source obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on XMM-Newton. The data comprise over 955ks of usable exposure time and more than 26000 counts per 50 milliAngstrom at 21.6 Angstroms. We concentrate on the spectrally clean region (21.3 < lambda < 22.5 Angstroms) where sharp features due to the astrophysically abundant OVII may reveal an intervening, warm--hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). We do not confirm detection of any of the intervening systems claimed to date. Rather, we detect only three unsurprising, astrophysically expected features down to the Log(N_i)~14.6 (3 sigma) sensitivity level. Each of the two purported WHIM features is rejected with a statistical confidence that exceeds that reported for its initial detection. While we can not rule out the existence of fainter, WHIM related features in these spectra, we suggest that previous discovery claims were premature. A more recent paper by Williams et al. claims to have demonstrated that the RGS data we analyze here do not have the resolution or statistical quality required to confirm or deny the LETGS detections. We show that our careful analysis resolves the issues encountered by Williams et al. and recovers the full resolution and statistical quality of the RGS data. We present a non-LTE model atmosphere analysis of Chandra HRC-S/LETG and XMM-Newton RGS spectroscopy of the prototypical supersoft source CAL 83 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Taken with a 16-month interval, the Chandra and XMM-Newton spectra are very similar. They reveal a very rich absorption line spectrum from the hot white dwarf photosphere, but no spectral signatures of a wind. We also report a third X-ray off-state during a later Chandra observation, demonstrating the recurrent nature of CAL 83. Moreover, we found evidence of short-timescale variability in the soft X-ray spectrum. We completed the analysis of the LETG and RGS spectra of CAL 83 with new NLTE line-blanketed model atmospheres that explicitly include 74 ions of the 11 most abundant species. We successfully matched the Chandra and XMM-Newton spectra assuming a model composition with LMC metallicity. We derived the basic stellar parameters of the hot white dwarf, but the current state of atomic data in the soft X-ray domain precludes a detailed chemical analysis. We have obtained the first direct spectroscopic evidence that the white dwarf is massive (Mwd > 1 Msun). The short timescale of the X-ray off-states is consistent with a high white dwarf mass. We present a preliminary analysis of XMM-Newton observations of the oxygen-rich supernova remnant G292.0+1.8 (MSH 11-54). Although the spatial extent of the remnant is 8 arcmin the bright central bar is narrow (1'-2') resulting in RGS spectra of a high spectral quality. This allows us to spectroscopically identify a cool, Te = 0.3 keV, and underionized component, resolve details of the Fe-L complex, and resolve the forbidden and resonant lines of the O VII triplet. We are also able to constrain the kinematics of the remnant using Ne IX as observed in the second order spectrum, and O VIII in the first order spectrum. We do not find evidence for O VII line shifts or Doppler broadening (sigma_v < 731 km/s), but line broadening of the Ne X Ly-alpha line seems to be present, corresponding to sigma_v ~ 1500 km/s., Comment: To appear in Proc. of the BeppoSAX Symposium: "The Restless High-Energy Universe", E.P.J. van den Heuvel, J.J.M. in 't Zand, and R.A.M.J. A long 280 ks observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 with XMM-Newton is reported. We focus on the oxygen line complex between 17 and 24 A as measured with the RGS spectrometers. Accurate absorption column densities and emission line fluxes are obtained. We explore several options for the geometry and physical form of the emitting and absorbing gas. The lack of change in ionization in the absorber despite an increase in continuum flux during the observation restricts the high-ionization (O-K) and the low-ionization (Fe-M) gas to distances of at least 0.5 pc and 2.8 pc, respectively, away from the central source. Given the P-Cygni type profiles in the resonance spectral lines and the similar velocity widths, column densities, and ionization structure inferred separately from the emission and absorption lines, it is tempting to relate the X-ray narrow-line emitting plasma with the X-ray absorbing gas. Under this assumption, the scenario of dense clumped clouds can be ruled out. Conversely, extended ionization cones (r > 10 pc) are consistent with the observation independent of this assumption. These findings are in stark contrast with the picture of numerous clumpy (n_e > 10^9 cm^-3) clouds drawn recently from UV spectra, but it is consistent with the extended X-ray emission cones observed directly in Seyfert 2 galaxies., Comment: To be published in ApJ

We report on the observation of OVII Doppler line broadening in a compact knot at the edge of SN 1006 detected with the Reflective Grating Spectrometer on board XMM-Newton. The observed line width of sigma = 3.4+/-0.5 eV at a line energy of 574 eV indicates an oxygen temperature of kT = 528+/-150 keV. Combined with the observed electron temperature of 1.5 keV the observed broadening is direct evidence for temperature non-equilibration in high Mach number shocks, and slow subsequent equilibration. The OVII line emission allows an accurate determination of the ionization state of the plasma, which is characterized by a relatively high forbidden line contribution, indicating log(n_e t) ~ 9.2., Comment: Accepted by Astrophysical Journal Letters, 4 pages, 4 figures. Recent observations with the dispersive X-ray spectrometers aboard Chandra and Newton Observatory have begun to probe the properties of the X-ray intergalactic medium (IGM) at small redshifts. Using large quantities (~950 ksec) of spectroscopic data acquired using the RGS aboard Newton Observatory, we investigated the intervening material toward three low redshift, high Galactic latitude AGNs with nominally featureless spectra: Mrk421, PKS2155-304 and 3C273. Each spectrum provides clear evidence for what appears to be a local (z~0), highly ionized absorbing medium betrayed by the OVII 1s-2p resonance transition feature seen at 21.6A (N[OVII] ~ 1E16 cm-2). Measurements are also made for the Lyman alpha transition of the adjacent ionization state, (OVIII; 18.97A), which potentially constrains the absorber's temperature. Finally, in a collisional equilibrium approximation, upper limits to diffuse emission intensities place upper limits on the electron density (ne < 2E-4 cm-3), lower limits on the scale length of the absorber (L > 140 kpc) and lower limits on its mass (M > 5E10 M[sun]). We present an analysis of the X-ray emission of the supernova remnant MSH14-63, which was partially covered by four observations with XMM-Newton. The detection of Fe K emission at 6.4 keV, and the lack of spatial correlation between hard X-ray and radio emission is evidence against a dominant X-ray synchrotron component. We argue that the hard X-ray continuum is best explained by non-thermal bremsstrahlung from a supra-thermal tail to an otherwise cool electron gas. The observation of the supernova remnant N132D by the scientific instruments on board the XMM-Newton satellite is presented. The X-rays from N132D are dispersed into a detailed line-rich spectrum using the Reflection Grating Spectrometers. Spectral lines of C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Fe are identified. Images of the remnant, in narrow wavelength bands, produced by the European Photon Imaging Cameras reveal a complex spatial structure of the ionic distribution. While K-shell Fe emission seems to originate near the centre, all of the other ions are observed along the shell. A high O VII / O VIII emission ratio is detected on the northeastern edge of the remnant. This can be a sign of hot ionising conditions, or it can reflect relatively cool gas. Spectral fitting of the CCD spectrum suggests high temperatures in this region, but a detailed analysis of the atomic processes involved in producing the O VII spectral lines leads to the conclusion that the intensities of these lines alone cannot provide a conclusive distinction between the two scenarios., Comment: To appear in A&A Letters, 365 (2001)

We present the first high resolution photospheric X-ray spectrum of a Supersoft X-ray Source, the famous CAL~83 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The spectrum was obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on XMM-Newton during the Calibration/Performance Verification phase of the observatory. The spectrum covers the range 20-40 A at an approximately constant resolution of 0.05 A, and shows very significant, intricate detail, that is very sensitive to the physical properties of the object. We present the results of an initial investigation of the spectrum, from which we draw the conclusion that the spectral structure is probably dominated by numerous absorption features due to transitions in the L-shells of the mid-$Z$ elements and the M-shell of Fe, in addition to a few strong K-shell features due to CNO., Comment: 4 pages. In this letter we present the soft X-ray (5-35A) spectrum of the supernova remnant (SNR) IE 0102-72.3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, acquired by the reflection grating spectrometer (RGS) aboard ESA's XMM-Newton Observatory. This extended-source X-ray spectrum of unprecedented spectral resolution (lambda/Delta(lambda) approx. 300) permits, for the first time, unabiguous identification and measurement of isolated emission lines and line complexes alike. The diagnostic power of performing spectroscopy using groups of emission lines from single ions is exemplified. In particular, the bright Lyman and helium series lines for light elements (C VI, O VII, O VIII, Ne IX, Ne X and possibly Mg XI & Mg XII) show peculiar ratios, where the values [1s - np] / [1s - (n + l)p] are systematically weaker than expected for electron impact excitation. These measured ratios resemble signatures of recombining or charge exchanging plasmas. We argue that charge exchange, given its large cross section and evidence for inhomogeneous media within the SNR, is a likely mechanism for the observed emission. Also. the well known temperature diagnostics G(T(sub e)) = (i + f)/r of helium- like triplets (O VII & Ne IX) indicate high temperatures, well above the maximum emission temperature T(sub m) for each ion, and consistent with a purely ionizing plasma. The density diagnostics R(n(sub e)) = f / i meanwhile, are consistent with the low density limit, as expected.
